Valentine’s Day Gifts That Speak His Language

While love is appreciated every day, Valentine’s season is a special time to celebrate it even more. This year, go beyond the ordinary and celebrate the extraordinary by honoring the men who inspire you with their creativity, resilience, and bold spirit. The Seiko 5 Sports Collection, with new limited edition collaborations with HUF and Denham, is no stranger to breaking conventions, and these new timepieces are designed to complement the unique qualities of men who embrace adventure and dare to be different.

For the Trailblazing Maverick

For the man who thrives in creativity and street-smart style, SRPL33K1 is from the Japanese watchmaking brand’s second collaboration with legendary skateboarding and streetwear brand HUF. Modeled after a Seiko 5 Sports timepiece that gained popularity in the late 1960s, the watch comes with HUF’s signature colors, design elements, and a vivid “HUF green” see-through caseback. This unique timepiece makes for a good companion for those who want to stand out effortlessly. SRPL33 is limited to 7,000 pieces worldwide and locally retails for PHP 22,050.

For the Cool and Confident

A tribute to exceptional craftsmanship and durability, SRPL35K1 is a collaboration timepiece between Seiko and premium Amsterdam-based denim brand Denham. Inspired by the concept of a “Jeanmaker’s Watch,” its overall design is reminiscent of a classic denim, with varying shades of indigo featured across the bezel, dial, and strap, and a red seconds hand mirroring the signature red rivets found on a Denham denim. The watch is presented with a NATO-style nylon strap, and the see-through screw caseback shows Denham’s iconic scissors logo and phrase “The Truth is in the Details.” A timepiece for men with refined and versatile style, SRPL35 is capped at 2,000 pieces worldwide, with a local price of PHP 24,950.

Both models are powered by Seiko’s Caliber 4R36 automatic movement, the driving force behind the Seiko 5 Sports collection, ensuring precision and dependability. Built for adventure and challenge, these watches feature a Curved Hardlex crystal and 100-meter water resistance, embodying the spirit of exploration for the men who wear them.

Jamie Rivera’s Enriching Music Career

Jamie Rivera is proud of the exciting new chapter in her music career. Recently, she beautifully interpreted the Jubilee 2025 theme, “Ningas Ng Pag-Asa,” alongside 92AD and Fabio Santos, further enriching her journey in the music industry.

Highlights of Jamie’s career

She has made a name for herself as a singer and has blossomed as a composer. Jamie considered being part of Miss Saigon the highlight of her showbiz career, even though she was only 24.

“Through that, I experienced a twist of fate. Before that, I thought I was just a singer. The stage was still an unexplored arena. Somehow because of Miss Saigon my status was elevated,” she disclosed in a previous exclusive interview.

From that experience, Jamie learned pointers on confidence, stage acting, independence, humility, and punctuality.

Jamie Rivera had a memorable lesson about punctuality during her first rehearsal. The stage director emphasized, “You need to be in the theater exactly at 10 AM.” When Jamie arrived at about 10:05, he remarked, “Miss Jamie Rivera, you’re now in London, and when I say 10 o’clock, you need to be here about five minutes early.”

In addition to her role in Miss Saigon, Jamie had another notable performance in the musical Bogis Street, where she played the female lead in a cast of 22. She performed opposite Singaporean theater actor George Chan. The musical was staged in the Kallang Theater in Singapore, as well as in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

Jamie shared her experience of being treated like a star after her debut album, “Hey, It’s Me,” achieved gold status in such a short time.

“I was overwhelmed during that time,” she recalled. “My family misunderstood my intentions and attitude because I became so busy. It’s important to remain as normal as everyone else. While being a star does give you a certain edge over other artists, it’s essential to be humble since people look up to you as a role model.”

Lucrative profession

Jamie believes that singing can be a lucrative profession, but she acknowledges that it’s not always stable. “We don’t have a regular income, so it’s important to have a backup plan,” she explained. She encourages other singers to complete their education so they have an option to fall back on. (In her case, she graduated with a degree in Commerce, majoring in Economics, from the University of Santo Tomas.) Additionally, she is assisting her husband in his real estate business.

She has learned to accept that there’s a lean and peak season in everyone’s career. “You shouldn’t be frustrated. You learn through your experiences,” she quipped.

Jamie’s musical taste is more on the classical. She loves Broadway, cartoons, and orchestra songs. “But when I write songs it should be commercial,” she said.  “Because what I want is different from what other people want. What I give is what people want. Because when I like what I do, people won’t buy it,” she explained.

What makes a good singer?

“A good singer should have a distinct quality of voice and proper packaging. I consider Lea Salonga a good singer because of her flawless voice. Of course, there’s Regine Velasquez, Kuh Ledesma, Barbra Streisand, Zsa-Zsa Padilla, and Pops Fernandez,” she shared.

Inherent Talent

Jamie Rivera, whose real name is Mary Jane Cruz Mendoza, comes from a musically inclined family, although she is the only one who has pursued a professional singing career. Jamie decided to follow her passion for music after winning the Yamaha Music Mate Girl Contest in 1986 while she was still majoring in A.B. Economics at the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

Her formal training began during her early years with the Metropolitan Theater, where she held her first major concert, titled “Hey, It’s Me, Jamie.” Shortly after, she recorded her debut album, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In 2021, she launched the inspirational song “We Give Our Yes,” the official mission song of the year-long 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines celebration.

Father Carlo Magno Marcelo wrote the song and produced it by ABS-CBN music creative director Jonathan Manalo.

Lessons learned

In her profession, the most important lesson she learned is the importance of being politically correct. “Otherwise, you’ll easily make enemies,” she explained.

“Another crucial lesson is to prioritize your family. Everything else will fade away, but not your family; nobody can take them away from you. Additionally, your past actions will reflect on your future. While you’re still young, strive to be a good person and keep your feet on the ground.”

Marking 70 Years of Excellence: PMA’s 43rd Agora Awards Honors Stellar Marketing Pioneers

The Philippine Marketing Association (PMA) rolled the carpet for the 43rd Agora Awards Gala at the Manila Ballroom, Manila Marriott Hotel, celebrating the pinnacle of marketing excellence, honoring outstanding individuals and organizations who have significantly shaped the industry landscape.

Honoring this year’s celebration, the 43rd Agora Awards Gala brought a special meaning as it coincided with PMA’s 70th anniversary, encapsulated by the theme: “AGORA S.M.I.L.E. – Stellar Marketing Innovators: Legacy of Excellence.”

With the leadership of Director-in-Charge and Overall Chairperson Alpha Gracias C. Allanigui, the 43rd Agora Awards has become a landmark event over the years, and now, it has expanded its recognition to include groundbreaking new categories to celebrate innovative strategies and transformative contributions that push boundaries and set new standards of excellence.

“We are blessed to have not only notable luminaries but also outstanding enterprises in our Agora roster,” said Allanigui. “These awardees are making waves and consistently raising their game through their legacy of excellence.”

The 43rd Agora Awards introduced new categories to reflect the ever-changing marketing landscape, emphasizing the importance of addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities within the industry. These new categories include Outstanding Achievement in Social Enterprise, which recognizes marketing initiatives that empower communities and drive social change; Outstanding Achievement in Sustainability Marketing, highlighting campaigns that promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices; and Outstanding Achievement in Marketing Campaign, celebrating groundbreaking strategies and innovative approaches that deliver exceptional results.

Among the highlights was theAgora Special Trailblazer Award, which honors individuals or companies with triumphs in three distinct Agora categories, showcasing sustained innovation and excellence. This year’s recipient, Century Pacific Food, Inc., exemplified this through its unparalleled achievements, including Agora Company of the Year (2011), Outstanding Achievement in Marketing Management (2014), and Outstanding Achievement in Export Marketing (2018).

Another notable category, the Agora Distinction Award for Nation-Building, celebrated individuals who have elevated the nation’s status through exemplary contributions in their respective fields. This honor was bestowed upon Mansmith and Fielders, Inc., under the leadership of Josiah and Chiqui Go, for their transformative impact on marketing education. Their commitment to fostering a culture of learning, mentorship, and sharing best practices has cemented their role as a cornerstone of marketing innovation and nation-building.

Here is the complete list of awardees:

PMA made the conscious decision not to award a Marketing Company of the Year this year, upholding its commitment to maintaining integrity and ensuring a rigorous, fair judging process.

Judging Process

The Agora Awards follows a meticulous and transparent process to ensure that only the most deserving candidates are recognized. Nominations are carefully screened for eligibility, and nominees are informed of their status and submission requirements. Throughout the process, confidentiality is strictly upheld, with all committee members signing agreements to protect sensitive information. During the deliberation process, only judges and the official tabulator, SGV, are present, ensuring fairness and impartiality. Winners are announced only after SGV verifies the results.

Chairperson Allanigui expressed her gratitude to the judges, category heads, committees, and supporters who worked tirelessly to bring the event to life. She also shared her personal reflection on leading the Agora Awards: “The Agora Awards is a labor of love, a journey of learning and patience, and a constant reminder of Filipino ingenuity. The stories of our nominees and awardees are inspiring testaments to innovation and integrity.”

Ternocon 2025 continues the dialogue on the Filipino Terno

Young designer Peach Garde’s collection, inspired by the legacy of National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, wins the prestigious Pacita Longos Award.

Young designer Peach Garde of Tapaz, Capiz took home the coveted Pacita Longos Medal (Gold Award) during the Ternocon 2025 finale at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). His exceptional design, which masterfully honored the traditional Philippine Terno while incorporating the contemporary influences of National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, earned him this prestigious recognition.

The much-anticipated fashion event concluded with an impressive lineup of winners, each showcasing a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. The prestigious awards not only highlighted skill and creativity but also the deep cultural roots embedded in Filipino heritage.

Garde’s collection beautifully paid tribute to Locsin’s iconic works, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and PICC. Drawing inspiration from Locsin’s legacy, Garde’s ensemble pieces incorporated sculptural silhouettes, geometric patterns, and innovative fabric choices.

Designer Bryan Peralta of Makati City won the Pura Escurdia Medal (Silver Award) for pushing the boundaries of modern fashion with bold shapes and textiles and capturing the powerful strokes of National Artist Jose Joya.

Designer Ram Silva of Iloilo earned the Ramon Valera Medal (Bronze Award) for his remarkable craftsmanship celebrating National Artist Fernando Amorsolo’s appreciation for the Filipino countryside and its rich cultural heritage.

Designer Windell Madis of Batac City, Ilocos Norte was honored with the Joe Salazar Medal,  the Chief Mentor’s Award, recognizing his fashion expertise in channeling the distinct style of National Artist for Visual Arts Hernando R. (H.R.) Ocampo, known for blending geometric shapes and vibrant hues.

CCP President Kaye C. Tinga and Suyen Corporation Chairman and CEO Ben Chan extended their heartfelt congratulations to the winners, commending their outstanding creativity and contribution to the preservation and evolution of Filipino fashion.

“Your creativity and dedication breathe new life into the Terno, ensuring it transcends our past, present, and future as Filipinos. Your work today stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of the Terno and fashion as part of our cultural identity,” said Tinga.

Chan, meanwhile, expressed that this year’s theme encapsulates the essence of Filipino artists inspiring Filipino designers. He added, “Thank you to all our finalists. We look forward to witnessing the fruits of your creativity and to your promising contributions to the evolution of our national dress in the future.”

The winning designs further strengthen Ternocon’s position as a beacon for Filipino creativity, providing a platform for new voices while celebrating the rich history of Filipino fashion.

Both the CCP and Bench remain steadfast in their commitment to championing Filipino designers and their significant contributions to the Philippine cultural landscape.

For Chan, Ternocon is “our panata (vow) for the Philippines,” expressing how deeply personal this project is to him and his family. “This event is close to our hearts as it honors our parents Chan Lib and See Ying, whose legacy is etched in the drawing of a Filipina wearing a terno on the packaging of the humble gawgaw used to preserve the Terno. This is a business they established in 1946, emerging from the ruins of war. They named it Liwayway, meaning ‘dawn,’ to symbolize the start of a new day and a new hope for the country.”

For Tinga, the finale and awards ceremony was more than just the culmination of the designers’ journeys. “We find a continuation of an ongoing conversation, as their collections, alongside the works of their mentors, create an intergenerational narrative on the runway. Art plays a central role in shaping our cultural identity, and fashion adds a unique dimension because it is accessible and interactive, connecting directly with the individual wearer.”

Launched in 2018 through a partnership between the CCP and Bench, Ternocon’s fourth edition aimed to preserve and promote the Philippine dress.

5 Tips to make your Chinese New Year extra special

The Chinese New Year is one of the most anticipated events in the country, and just like any other occasion, Chinese people love celebrating this holiday in their special ways.

Chinese people have always had a home in the Philippines. Their values and culture have been embedded in our nation, and their presence has impacted our economy, tradition, and beliefs.

The Chinese New Year is one of the most anticipated events in the country, and just like any other occasion, Chinese people love celebrating this holiday in their special ways. Some go all out– some opt for the traditional way– but all in all, the Chinese New Year is always something to look forward to.

  • Red, the lucky color

It’s not a secret that Chinese people loved wearing red on several occasions and events, for it symbolizes luck and prosperity. It is the color of Chinese lanterns, doors, and window panes in traditional Chinese households. In the Chinese New Year, wearing red will surely attract luck and blessings to you and your family in the coming year. People often wear traditional clothing such as Cheongsam, one of the most popular Chinese clothing for women, and is commonly worn in special events such as this. If you’re opting for a modern celebration, any red clothing will do as well—it still attracts the same good luck!

  • The traditional Hong Bao

Every time New Year comes rolling around, people always look forward to the Hong Bao, or the Red Packets– more popularly known as the Ang Pao. The married couples and elders give away Ang Paos to children and unmarried people within their families, each containing a specific amount of money. It is believed that this tradition brings good luck to the receiver as well as the giver, and it certainly gives out good vibes as well!

  • Good food, great life

The Chinese people surely know how to prepare a feast. The customary Chinese New Year banquet never misses these symbolic foods: a whole fish for additional money and good luck, pineapples for wealth and prosperity, and the famous neighborhood Tikoy and dumplings. Of course, Chinese people also adore eating pancit for long life, and they also display citrus fruits in the center table, among them pomelos, ponkan, and kiat-kiats. These marvelous foods spice up the New Year feast and it is twice the fun with every member of the family present on this grand occasion.

  • Make some noise!

To drive away bad luck and evil spirits, fireworks and firecrackers light up the sky. This tradition is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. According to a Chinese legend, the fireworks are used to scare off Nian, a mythical beast who comes down from the mountains every end of the year to destroy cities. They also try to make a lot of noise, using all sorts of things such as pots and pans, horns, and cans, among others. It may be a rambunctious night, but surely one of great fun and excitement.

  • Door-to-door greetings

In the spirit of friendship and forgiveness, Chinese people go door-to-door in their neighborhoods to greet their friends and colleagues. It also means that whatever disputes or misunderstandings they might have gotten into during the past year will be forgiven and forgotten. The New Year gives people a clean slate, and the Chinese people surely take this to heart.

The Chinese New Year may be a rambunctious event, but surely one of great fun and excitement. It honors Chinese heritage and welcomes another year of luck and prosperity for everyone. These traditions are only a few of the things that make the Chinese New Year special, but nothing beats celebrating the holiday with your family and welcoming another chapter of your lives together.
