Celebrating Philippine Textile Excellence: Likhang HABI Announces 2025 National Weaving Competitions

In a country where cultural identity is woven into the very fabric of its history, HABI: The Philippine Textile Council proudly announces the launch of the 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition, and the 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition, inviting master artisans and weaving communities across the archipelago to showcase their extraordinary craftsmanship.

This year’s competitions will culminate at the 15th Likhang HABI Market Fair on October 10-12, 2025, to be held at a new, more expansive venue: SPACE in One Ayala, Makati. The larger location reflects the growing national appreciation for these ancient crafts that have been passed through generations of Filipino hands.

“We want to give voice and value to the hands behind every woven creation,” says the council’s founder, Maribel Ongpin. “The artistry of Filipino weavers deserves a national stage.”

Celebrating Two Iconic Philippine Fibers

In an era dominated by fast fashion and mass production, these competitions stand as powerful reminders that sustainability, heritage, and identity can be preserved through the patient work of skilled hands. The spotlight will still be on piña and abaca fibers, deeply connected to Filipinos’ cultural identity. The delicate, translucent piña, made from pineapple leaf fibers, has been a symbol of Filipino elegance for centuries; on the other hand, abaca, known globally as Manila hemp, represents the strength and versatility of Philippine natural resources.

The two competitions build upon last year’s impressive showcase of talent. The 2024 Piña Competition celebrated Edgar Cornito’s “Piña Silk, Black and Gold Sinuksok” with first place honors, followed by Raquel Eliserio’s “Rosas de Papel with Rengue” in second. Third place resulted in a tie between Rosalvie Tumaca’s “Piña Silk Kalabasa” and Perlie Florencio’s “Piña Silk Multi-Harness Geometric Pattern.” Special recognitions went to Jannalyn Rasonable, who received the Nadres Young Weaver Award, while Ursulita Dela Cruz and Therese Angela Sulang earned the Filip + Inna Innovation Award.

The Abaca Competition similarly celebrated extraordinary craftsmanship with outstanding creations such as an Abaca Fino Barong by Rolly Arboleda of LA HERMINIA WEAVING INDUSTRY, and an Abaca Macramé creation by Arlene Yamog and Mayra Iledan.  Other notable winners from past years include Myrna Pula for her entry “Doub Basag” (Palm Leaf); Annaliza Angcoy of TADECO for her entry T’nalak “Hafak Menual” or Wings of an Eagle; and Rey Rosea Monon Dillera of the Bagobo Tagabawa community for her submission, inabel design. Ms. Dillera is the daughter of  Salinta Monon, who was a recipient of the National Living Treasures Award (Manlilikha ng Bayan) in 1998, for dedicating her life to preserving her craft and establishing the School of Living Tradition in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, where she taught the art of weaving to younger generations.

Under the piña competition, winners from previous years include Ursalita de la Cruz, Anna India Legazpi, and Melanie Palmon of Sr. Alfred Crafts Aklan.

Mechanics

Entries will be judged on authenticity, creativity, technical skill, and cultural narrative, with winners receiving recognition, cash prizes, and national exposure to cultural institutions, designers, and textile enthusiasts.

For the 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition, there are three categories that participants can enter: Liniwan, Pure Piña, and Natural Fiber Blends with Piña, (Seda/ Jusi/Cotton/ Abaca). Entries must have a minimum length of two meters. There are no structural limits on the width, and, for the Liniwan category, the fabric must be plain (with no design). Additional points will be awarded for the use of natural dyes. A list of materials used and a detailed description of the processes involved in making the piece must be included in the submission.

On the other hand, for the 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition, the following categories are open for entries: Ikat (dyeing technique used to create distinct patterns), Abaca Craft (handcrafted creations made from pure abaca, not necessarily woven), and Nipis (fine, woven pure abaca). Submissions should have a minimum length of two meters and a maximum length of six meters, and there are no structural limitations on the width, Additional points will likewise be awarded for the use of natural dye.

HABI extends this year’s invitation to weavers, weaving communities, and independent artisans from across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, who can send their creations to the Habi office at 962 May Street, Mandaluyong City. The competition particularly aims to elevate regional weaving practices, bringing visibility to communities where these traditions remain vital cultural practices.

Interested weavers and communities should submit their entries on or before September 1, 2025. Ternocon 2025 continues the dialogue on the Filipino Terno

Young designer Peach Garde’s collection, inspired by the legacy of National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, wins the prestigious Pacita Longos Award.

Young designer Peach Garde of Tapaz, Capiz took home the coveted Pacita Longos Medal (Gold Award) during the Ternocon 2025 finale at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). His exceptional design, which masterfully honored the traditional Philippine Terno while incorporating the contemporary influences of National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin, earned him this prestigious recognition.

The much-anticipated fashion event concluded with an impressive lineup of winners, each showcasing a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. The prestigious awards not only highlighted skill and creativity but also the deep cultural roots embedded in Filipino heritage.

Garde’s collection beautifully paid tribute to Locsin’s iconic works, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and PICC. Drawing inspiration from Locsin’s legacy, Garde’s ensemble pieces incorporated sculptural silhouettes, geometric patterns, and innovative fabric choices.

Designer Bryan Peralta of Makati City won the Pura Escurdia Medal (Silver Award) for pushing the boundaries of modern fashion with bold shapes and textiles and capturing the powerful strokes of National Artist Jose Joya.

Designer Ram Silva of Iloilo earned the Ramon Valera Medal (Bronze Award) for his remarkable craftsmanship celebrating National Artist Fernando Amorsolo’s appreciation for the Filipino countryside and its rich cultural heritage.

Designer Windell Madis of Batac City, Ilocos Norte was honored with the Joe Salazar Medal,  the Chief Mentor’s Award, recognizing his fashion expertise in channeling the distinct style of National Artist for Visual Arts Hernando R. (H.R.) Ocampo, known for blending geometric shapes and vibrant hues.

CCP President Kaye C. Tinga and Suyen Corporation Chairman and CEO Ben Chan extended their heartfelt congratulations to the winners, commending their outstanding creativity and contribution to the preservation and evolution of Filipino fashion.

“Your creativity and dedication breathe new life into the Terno, ensuring it transcends our past, present, and future as Filipinos. Your work today stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of the Terno and fashion as part of our cultural identity,” said Tinga.

Chan, meanwhile, expressed that this year’s theme encapsulates the essence of Filipino artists inspiring Filipino designers. He added, “Thank you to all our finalists. We look forward to witnessing the fruits of your creativity and to your promising contributions to the evolution of our national dress in the future.”

The winning designs further strengthen Ternocon’s position as a beacon for Filipino creativity, providing a platform for new voices while celebrating the rich history of Filipino fashion.

Both the CCP and Bench remain steadfast in their commitment to championing Filipino designers and their significant contributions to the Philippine cultural landscape.

For Chan, Ternocon is “our panata (vow) for the Philippines,” expressing how deeply personal this project is to him and his family. “This event is close to our hearts as it honors our parents Chan Lib and See Ying, whose legacy is etched in the drawing of a Filipina wearing a terno on the packaging of the humble gawgaw used to preserve the Terno. This is a business they established in 1946, emerging from the ruins of war. They named it Liwayway, meaning ‘dawn,’ to symbolize the start of a new day and a new hope for the country.”

For Tinga, the finale and awards ceremony was more than just the culmination of the designers’ journeys. “We find a continuation of an ongoing conversation, as their collections, alongside the works of their mentors, create an intergenerational narrative on the runway. Art plays a central role in shaping our cultural identity, and fashion adds a unique dimension because it is accessible and interactive, connecting directly with the individual wearer.”

Launched in 2018 through a partnership between the CCP and Bench, Ternocon’s fourth edition aimed to preserve and promote the Philippine dress.

Longchamp celebrates art, joy and fashion with Elaine Constantine

The Longchamp  Spring-Summer  2024  campaign is brimming with energy! This season, the joyful antics of the students at Longchamp University are captured by the renowned photographer and director Elaine Constantine. “I totally fell in love with her light-filled photographs, which she envisions like paintings,” explains Longchamp Creative Director Sophie Delafontaine. “She is quite brilliant at conveying energy and joie de vivre. I really wanted an upbeat campaign, because it’s important to accentuate the positive, and Elaine excels in the art of creating images that are full of happiness and optimism.”

Since the 1990s, Elaine Constantine has conjured positive energy through her lens, working extensively for UK magazine The Face, as well as Italian, French and American Vogue. Her images have been displayed at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, while the National Portrait Gallery has two of her portraits in its permanent collection.

Longchamp University SS24.

In 2023, the Museum of Impressionisms in Giverny showed two of Elaine’s works alongside the  Impressionist masters as part of an exhibition entitled “Children of Impressionism”. It was her extremely artistic quality that attracted Sophie Delafontaine. “Elaine’s images capture the energy of bursts of laughter,” says Longchamp’s Creative Director. “Everything she does is dynamic, and she gives her models the freedom to be totally natural, totally themselves. When she’s shooting, she’s constantly moving around the group of girls who are also moving. It’s quite magical how she manages to bring vitality into a photograph, and of course, it’s even more obvious on film. Elaine really is a master of her art.”
