Oh! Crop Wednesday: A Celebration of Adlai Rice and Culinary Delights

Oh! Crop, the number one Adlai rice brand in the Philippines, has been making waves in the local food scene with its nutty flavor and health benefits. Every Wednesday, the brand introduces new Adlai dishes to different restaurants in the country in an event called Oh! Crop Wednesday. And last Wednesday, it was held at The Gram Cafe Serendra, best known for its soufflé pancakes and great coffees.

The cafe was buzzing with excitement as guests eagerly awaited the unveiling of the special menu created for the event. The menu featured Adlai in every dish, showcasing the versatility and unique flavor profile of the grain.

The event was hosted by Freya Paulienne Suguitan at Gram Cafe Serendra. Chari Trinidad-Mendoza, CEO of Oh! Crop, gave a heartfelt opening speech, expressing her gratitude and support of the brand and emphasizing the importance of promoting healthy eating habits as well as recognizing local farmers from Gawad Kalinga.

The partnership between Oh! Crop and Gawad Kalinga is a shining example of how private organizations can work with social enterprises to make a meaningful impact on the lives of marginalized communities. With the provision of unmilled Adlai to farmers in Bukidnon, Arakan, North Cotabato, and soon to expand to Liliw, Laguna, this partnership will not only provide sustainable livelihood opportunities but also promote the consumption of healthy and locally grown crops.

Oh Crop event at Gram Cafe Serendra.

Chari Mendoza’s inspiring advocacy goes beyond simply providing a livelihood for farmers; it is about empowering them and promoting sustainable agriculture, ultimately leading to the betterment of the entire agricultural sector. Through their combined efforts, Oh! Crop and Gawad Kalinga are creating a ripple effect that will uplift communities and promote a healthier and more sustainable way of living for all Filipinos.

The event was made even more special by the attendance of Marvin Agustin, a Filipino celebrity chef, and Jugs Jugeta of Itchy Worms, a popular Filipino band. Marvin Agustin showcased his culinary skills with his delectable Salmon Paella, which was a crowd favorite. Jugs serenaded the crowd with his music, adding to the festive atmosphere of the event.

The menu featured a variety of dishes that highlighted the flavor and texture of Adlai rice. The starter was a Summer Apple Salad with Tempura, which was a perfect mix of sweet and savory. The main course was the Salmon Truffle Aburi Don with Adlai Rice, a rich and flavorful dish that combined the umami taste of salmon with the nutty flavor of Adlai rice. The dish was a work of art, with its intricate presentation and delicate flavors.

The star of the menu was the Salmon Paella by Marvin Agustin, which was a feast for the senses. The dish was a symphony of flavors and textures, with the bold taste of the saffron and the tender pieces of salmon complementing the nutty flavor of Adlai rice. The dish was a hit with the guests, who couldn’t get enough of its deliciousness.

Ube Adlai Champorado by Marvin Agustin

For dessert, guests were treated to a unique take on a classic Filipino favorite – Ube Champorado and The Gram Cafe’s Special Soufflé Pancakes. The dish combined the sweet and earthy flavor of purple yam with the creamy goodness of Champorado, a traditional Filipino rice porridge. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the combination of flavors was a delightful surprise.

Oh! Crop Wednesday at The Gram Cafe Serendra was a culinary adventure that showcased the unique flavor and versatility of Adlai rice. The event was a celebration of Filipino food and culture, and a testament to the creativity and culinary prowess of Filipino chefs. The success of the event only shows that Oh! Crop is more than just a brand of rice – it is a symbol of healthy living, community support, and culinary excellence.

Tia Belle’s in Silang offers traditional vegetable and fish dishes this Lenten Season

As the bastion of Christianity in Asia, the Holy Week or Semana Santa has been a sacred occasion for the Filipinos, with ancient traditions still taking hold up to this day. The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic nation with the nationwide observance of the Lenten Season. The Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday, with the Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday declared statutory holidays.

Filipinos are known for honoring traditions during Holy Week. True to its Catholic roots, each Filipino family has their own customs when it comes to the Lenten Season. Filipino families conduct the Pabasa or Pasyon and join festivals and processions.

One of the long-standing traditions is fasting or abstinence, observed during Ash Wednesday and Good Friday to honor Jesus’ death and His resurrection. Filipinos usually refrain eating various kinds of meat, sticking to vegetables and seafood-based dishes. This tradition also seeks to cleanse the soul and regenerate one’s spiritual health.

The Holy Week has always been a time for faith, family, and love – values which the Tia Belle’s in Silang resonate with – values that bind their love for the country and faith in God as infused in their famous roster of homemade Filipino dishes.

Tia Belle’s in Silang offers a wide variety of traditional vegetable and fish dishes that still stimulates one’s palate and leaves them satisfied with their meal. This Filipino-style restaurant makes it a point to honor the country’s values and traditions and prepare dishes to suit large families, Catholics, and non-Catholics alike!

Start with their seafood meals, their relyenong bangus, one of Tia Belle’s signature dishes. With its crunchy and tasty texture, this dish is cooked with vegetables and organic ingredients, free from processed food, and served with homemade atsara. It will surely satisfy your cravings!

Another fan favorite is the pinasingawang pompano sa dahon ng saging, a delectable Filipino dish highlighting the highly sought-after Pompano. This steamed dish is carefully wrapped in a banana leaf before being steamed, giving it a juicy and sumptuous smell that makes the food’s various flavors dance with one another, a must-try this Lenten Season!

Moreover, coconut milk enthusiasts may try Tia Belle’s special laing, made from fresh gabi and other root crops, topped with crushed chicharon and siling haba. This dish will surely tickle your taste buds! Another best seller is their special lumpiang bukid, a mix of root crops wrapped in a malunggay-based wrapper garnished with sesame seed sauce.

Tia Belle’s also caters to bulk orders, perfect for large families holding reunions or get-togethers during the season. Among these are the spicy seafood cajun and ginataang tilapia, Filipino seafood favorites that can cater to 20 up to 100 people.

For dessert lovers, they also serve Filipino-style halo-halo, their special inangit suman, and their signature dessert, Tia Belle’s famous pichi pichi, best paired with their special hot cacao!

The Holy Week observance is meaningful with food that respects and honors Filipino traditions, the same core values that Tia Belle’s stands for. With its superb hospitality and service, Tia Belle’s is the place to go during Lent for food and quality time with your family!

A Special Wednesday: Oh Crop! Adlai Rice dominating Manila’s restaurants

OhCrop! Brand adlai hosted its first “OhCropWednesday” event at Marvin Agustin’s Cochi Bistro at the Bonifacio Global City last March 8, 2023.

The intimate event feted influencers, celebrity chefs, and close friends alike with a custom menu featuring the Philippines’ healthy, indigenous grain.

From left to right: Redge Tolentino, Kit Robles, Mags Fetalino, Marvin Agustin, Rose Tolentino, Chari Mendoza and Mark Justin Antonio.

Adlai’s taste-full potential was unleashed in several courses.

Among these were Fat Seed’s Chef Bryant Dee’s creamy Saffron Seafood Risotto – a paella-style dish with clams, shrimp and squid, and saffron and other spices.

Another crowd-favorite was Burrow and Lula Cafe’s Chef Dani’s Salmon Truffle Adlai – a light main featuring the flavors of fresh basil, cherry tomatoes in balsamic vinegar, and truffle essence.

Chef Marvin Agustin’s signature hearty Cochinillo was the supper’s mainstay.

It was accompanied by his Korean Uni Adlai (a Korean-inspired, pilaf-textured fried adlai rice sautéed to perfection with Kimchi, topped with sriracha-mayo, sprinkled with Nori flakes and fresh Uni), and Shiitake Mushroom Adlai (fried in garlic, onion leeks, Shiitake and oyster mushrooms flambeed with Shao Xing wine seasoned with special spices, drizzled with sesame oil, and garnished with chopped leeks).

Korean Uni Adlai & Shitake Mushroom Adlai

The ever-endearing Chef Wado of Wadoughs Cake Studio ended the events with nostalgia. His Adlai Champorado upgrades a Filipino staple into a refined classic, fusing melted coconut and evaporated milk with 100% Davao tablea, before being dusted with muscovado sugar and topped with crunchy cacao nibs.

Adlai Champorado

Between dishes, diners were also regaled with OhCrop! adlai cooking experiences by the chosen chefs, personal anecdotes by mother/influencer Kit Bernardino-Robles (@HappyHome.Mom), and the sustainable and ethical sourcing of OhCrop! Adlai by its CFO, Magellan Fetalino

Slated as a monthly event meant to increase awareness for adlai as a healthy, local, and tasteful alternative to similar grains like quinoa, amaranth, and basmati, “OhCrop! Wednesday” is shaping up to be a fun gathering of like-minded fine diners who don’t always have to take themselves too seriously – much like the OhCrop! brand.

“It is true-to-heart Korean food. Not fusion. Not localized. And we offer high-quality Korean cuisine at a very affordable price. The quality is identical to the food that they would sample from Kiwa in Solaire,” said  Dr. David Shim, CEO and owner of Kiwa Express.

Meanwhile, Ramen Nagi is giving us another unbelievable authentic Japanese experience in a bowl.

Visit them soon!

  •  A gift of authentic Japanese ramen

A heartfelt gift from Ramen Nagi’s Ramen Master Chef Satoshi Ikuta-san, the Nori Niboshi King is the sum of in-depth collaboration with Ramen Nagi’s chefs. The Niboshi King is filled with fresh, handcrafted noodles and small dried fish infused with Tonkotsu broth and topped with chashu, peanuts, seaweeds, and the signature Nagi spice blend.

  •  Premium and affordable Korean cuisine

Kiwa Express opened its doors at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, introducing to mall patrons exceptional Korean dining options at an affordable price point. The quick-service casual Korean restaurant is an offshoot of Kiwa Korean Grill at Solaire Resort, promising to bring premium Korean menu offerings not yet offered by other Korean restaurants.

Dr. David Shim, CEO and owner of Kiwa Express, explains his reasons for this new direction. “I’ve been operating Kiwa Restaurant in Solaire since 2015 and there has been this growing demand from Filipino regulars wanting easier access to my authentic Korean food.”

Kiwa Express menu features items hand-picked by Dr. Shim and classified as Kiwa signature dishes or chef’s special recommendations. He explains his personal recommendation for first-time diners, ”Kiwa Galbitang, the Korean version of bulalo. I will guarantee you that it will make you very happy.” The hearty, nourishing beef stew is a great gateway to the world of Korean food. Beef short ribs are stewed slowly in aromatics resulting in a clean, delicate broth that is a feast to the senses. Dr. Shim also highly recommends the must-try Kimchi Jjigae — a warming, spicy stew highlighting their signature kimchi, Doenjang Jjigae, Jap Chae, and Shrimp Tempura.

Kiwa Express offers authentic and value-for-money Korean dishes.

Kiwa Express in Ayala Malls Manila Bay is the first of many branches already in the works. “This restaurant is our launch pad, the model on which new branches will be based. When this clicks, we already have other upcoming outlets.”

Kiwa Express is located on the 3rd floor, Building B, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Macapagal Boulevard corner Aseana Avenue, Paranaque City.
