5 Tips to make your Chinese New Year extra special

The Chinese New Year is one of the most anticipated events in the country, and just like any other occasion, Chinese people love celebrating this holiday in their special ways.

Chinese people have always had a home in the Philippines. Their values and culture have been embedded in our nation, and their presence has impacted our economy, tradition, and beliefs.

The Chinese New Year is one of the most anticipated events in the country, and just like any other occasion, Chinese people love celebrating this holiday in their special ways. Some go all out– some opt for the traditional way– but all in all, the Chinese New Year is always something to look forward to.

  • Red, the lucky color

It’s not a secret that Chinese people loved wearing red on several occasions and events, for it symbolizes luck and prosperity. It is the color of Chinese lanterns, doors, and window panes in traditional Chinese households. In the Chinese New Year, wearing red will surely attract luck and blessings to you and your family in the coming year. People often wear traditional clothing such as Cheongsam, one of the most popular Chinese clothing for women, and is commonly worn in special events such as this. If you’re opting for a modern celebration, any red clothing will do as well—it still attracts the same good luck!

  • The traditional Hong Bao

Every time New Year comes rolling around, people always look forward to the Hong Bao, or the Red Packets– more popularly known as the Ang Pao. The married couples and elders give away Ang Paos to children and unmarried people within their families, each containing a specific amount of money. It is believed that this tradition brings good luck to the receiver as well as the giver, and it certainly gives out good vibes as well!

  • Good food, great life

The Chinese people surely know how to prepare a feast. The customary Chinese New Year banquet never misses these symbolic foods: a whole fish for additional money and good luck, pineapples for wealth and prosperity, and the famous neighborhood Tikoy and dumplings. Of course, Chinese people also adore eating pancit for long life, and they also display citrus fruits in the center table, among them pomelos, ponkan, and kiat-kiats. These marvelous foods spice up the New Year feast and it is twice the fun with every member of the family present on this grand occasion.

  • Make some noise!

To drive away bad luck and evil spirits, fireworks and firecrackers light up the sky. This tradition is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. According to a Chinese legend, the fireworks are used to scare off Nian, a mythical beast who comes down from the mountains every end of the year to destroy cities. They also try to make a lot of noise, using all sorts of things such as pots and pans, horns, and cans, among others. It may be a rambunctious night, but surely one of great fun and excitement.

  • Door-to-door greetings

In the spirit of friendship and forgiveness, Chinese people go door-to-door in their neighborhoods to greet their friends and colleagues. It also means that whatever disputes or misunderstandings they might have gotten into during the past year will be forgiven and forgotten. The New Year gives people a clean slate, and the Chinese people surely take this to heart.

The Chinese New Year may be a rambunctious event, but surely one of great fun and excitement. It honors Chinese heritage and welcomes another year of luck and prosperity for everyone. These traditions are only a few of the things that make the Chinese New Year special, but nothing beats celebrating the holiday with your family and welcoming another chapter of your lives together. Agot Isidro: A woman of simplicity, and strong convictions

As a child, she was an ugly duckling but blossomed into the beloved “Crush ng Bayan” of the 1990s, proving that beauty and confidence can emerge from the most unexpected beginnings.

During my interview with Agot Isidro, the talented singer-actress, in the late 1990s, she painted a vivid picture of herself as a person who embodies simplicity and sweetness. With a warm smile, she reflected on her character, emphasizing that her simplicity is not just a choice, but an intrinsic part of who she is. Agot’s genuine nature shines through in her words, making it clear that her down-to-earth demeanor is a defining aspect of her personality.

“It just happens that I have a different job. I try to keep my sanity. So if I’m not working, I’m a normal person. But if I have to sing in Megamall, that’s a different Agot,” she said in a previous interview.

Fans in the know are aware that Agot has had her share of failed relationships. From each, she said, she learned a lesson or two. “If my relationship didn’t last long, I get disappointed. But it’s not like a burden I should carry forever,” she intimated.

After her failed marriage to Manu Sandejas, she learned to move on. She’s blooming these days. Her special someone is not from showbiz. (Her boyfriend is Florin “Pilo” Hilbay, lawyer and former Solicitor General).

Her turn-ons? “Someone I can talk to about anything under the sun,” she shared. “He must have a sense of humor. Hindi mayabang (not boastful). The guy has to have perfect table manners. It’s something you do three times a day – how does he do it – if he does it na magulo (messy), it’s indicative na magulo ang buhay niya (that his life was chaotic). And I don’t like someone carrying a clutch bag!”

Agot has also a fetish for shoes. “I want worn-out and down-to-earth shoes,” she insisted. “Ganoon din kasi ako sa shoes ko, pinatatagal ko (It’s the same with my shoes, I last longer). My oldest pair of shoes dates back to 1989.” And she goes for investment dressing. “I have clothes since 1988 that I can still use up to now.”

Independent-minded woman

Agot’s independence was greatly shaped by her upbringing. “In our family, my parents have given us choices. They let us grow as ourselves. They raised us in an environment that we can make our own choices. They don’t actually dictate what they want for us,” she shared.

Courtes: Agot Isidro Official FB page

She learned more about independence when she lived in New York in 1989. She said it wasn’t easy living in a foreign land. She experienced how it was like to be broke and to eat a pretzel as her sustenance. What she missed about New York was being able to walk in the street without building up perspiration. “E, here just five blocks away you have no choice but to take a taxi. You can’t even take a jeep because it’s dusty,” she chided.

Her being a designer takes a back seat at the moment. (She graduated Bachelor of Interior Design in UP). “I’m busy doing things myself. But it’s still there. I’m not licensed,” she said.

Agot believes that it’s possible for a woman to combine marriage and career. “If I want to have a career and start a family, it’s up to me. It’s how I will balance it. My husband has to be supportive of me also.”

 The ugly duckling

Agot admitted that when she was young she was an ugly duckling. “Noong bata ako, ang itim-itim ko,” (When I was a kid, I had dark skin) she disclosed. Agot is the fourth child in a brood of six. She was a swimmer. Nevertheless, she has overcome her inferiority complex. Never mind that she went through it with half an ear closed to intermittent pestering, “Negra!” they called her.

How do you feel now when your photograph is being taken? “I don’t have the concept that I’m beautiful. Now, people say ‘You’re so pretty.’ Really? You should have seen me when I was younger. I didn’t grow accustomed to people telling me I’m so pretty.” She earned the title “Crush ng Bayan” in the 1990s. The title was flattering but she said nothing was put on.

As a child, Agot was not really into dreamland. She wasn’t into Barbie dolls. What she liked to play were the likes of tumbang preso. During those days, her great time was when she would accompany her dad to scout for old cars and restore it into brand new ones; in return, they would sell them to make money.

Biggest dream

Some of her what-to-do lists are really far off. One of the things she included in the list is going to Africa. “It’s my biggest dream,” she said. “I’ve been to Europe already. But when you say Africa, it’s a different world, you don’t know what to expect.”

She always wants to travel. Her favorite place is in Palawan. “It’s nice. It’s like a different country,” she said. “Even for just three days, I want to unwind to have a  change of scenery.”

Like everyone else, Agot has her own share of peculiarities. “Nagkukulong ako sa kuwarto (I lock myself in the room). Just for a snap,” she related. “Huwag n’yo na ako kausapin. Lumayo ka na lang muna. Hayaan mong ako ang lumapit.” (Don’t talk to me anymore. Just stay away first. Let me come over.)

But it’s different altogether when she gets depressed. “I cook. Then I’ll call my friends to drop by the house and eat everything I have prepared,” she related. Agot’s specialties are pasta and galunggong fillet. Before her favorite viands were pork chop and chicken.” Though, a hearty eater, it didn’t show in her svelte figure.

Her quiet moment is best spent in reading inspirational and stimulating books like The Road Less Traveled, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Positive Thinking, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and others. But she doesn’t read new age stuff.

“It’s always nice to read a good book. It keeps you updated on other things. And it provides solitude, which I rarely experience as a showbiz person. I always welcome the chance to be alone with a good book,” she ended.

CCP Pasinaya 2025 Open House Festival expands its two-day program nationwide

The Philippines’ largest multi-arts event, the CCP Pasinaya Open House Festival, returns bigger and better than ever, featuring an exciting new component and an expanded audience reach. The festival will take place on February 1 and 2, 2025 at various venues nationwide under the theme “CCP Pasinaya 2025 Open House Festival: Para sa Lahat!,” in its 19th edition.

This year, CCP Pasinaya will serve as the vibrant launch event for the National Arts Month 2025 celebration, setting the stage for a month-long tribute to the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence.

In partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), this year’s National Arts Month aims to engage audiences from all walks of life, inviting them to explore, support, and celebrate the dynamic and flourishing arts scene across the country.

With the country’s leading cultural institutions collaborating, CCP Pasinaya will not only showcase Filipino artists but also foster a deeper appreciation for how the arts shape the nation’s identity and cultural landscape, unite communities, inspire creativity, and preserve its rich traditions.

The festival also extends its reach to new regional partner sites, including Clark (Pampanga) collaborating with Clark Development Corporation, Batangas Province (Batangas), Himamaylan (Negros Occidental), and Sorsogon City (Bicol). It also makes a highly anticipated return to Iloilo City headed by the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) and Tagum City (Davao del Norte) with the Musikahan sa Tagum Foundation, Inc. This is in partnership with the networks of the CCP Kaisa sa Sining.

In Metro Manila, the CCP Pasinaya will unfold across multiple venues such as Circuit Makati, The Metropolitan Theater, Intramuros, Aliw Theater and various partner museums and galleries, offering a vibrant celebration of Filipino arts and culture.

“The CCP Pasinaya has always been a celebration of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Philippines. As we mark its 19th edition, we are excited to expand the festival’s reach and bring more inclusive, accessible, and engaging experiences to audiences across the country. With new regional partners and innovative components like the Palaro, Pasinaya 2025 promises to be a grander, more vibrant showcase of Filipino artistry for all to enjoy,” said CCP President Kaye C. Tinga.

Favorite components – Palihan, Palabas, Paseo Museo, Palitan, Pagtitipon, and Pamilihan – bring together a diverse mix of art groups and individual artists from across the Philippines. They offer over 200 performances, workshops, and activities showcasing the best of music, theater, dance, visual arts, films, and literature.

In Palihan, the public can participate in workshops of various art disciplines conducted by leading artists, resource persons, and experts. Palabas is all about performances featuring the CCP resident companies such as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bayanihan National Dance Company, the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, and the Madrigal Singers, along with professional, amateur, and community-based artists and arts organizations.

Meanwhile, Palitan is an arts market where pre-registered participants can pitch their productions and other contents to prospective producers from here and abroad; while CCP Kaisa sa Sining regional network members converge in Pagtitipon. Paseo Museo gives audiences a hop-on, hop-off tour of the partner museums and galleries in Manila and Pasay cities.

A new highlight of this year’s Pasinaya is Palaro, which features the final output of the CCP Game and Comics Development Grant awardees that showcase Philippine mythology, simulation with iconic Filipino heroes, exploration of Philippine landmarks, puzzles, and story-driven adventure.

“The addition of Palaro to this year’s CCP Pasinaya is a groundbreaking step in celebrating the intersection of art, technology, and creativity,” said CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Dennis N. Marasigan.

With its See-All-You-Can, Workshop-All-You-Can, Network-all-You-Can, Pay-What-You-Can scheme, the CCP Pasinaya anticipates an audience of over 50,000.

#ThrowbackSeries Donita Rose: Conquering new grounds

Donita Rose, one pretty face who graced local cinema has conquered a new ground, where she can showcase her other expertise as a chef at a Filipino supermarket chain in the US. She left show business in 2020.

The Filipino-American actress, TV host, and former MTV Asia VJ has announced on her Instagram account a few months ago that she’s the new Corporate Research and Development Chef of Island Pacific, which has multiple stores in California and Nevada. Island Pacific is owned by Nino Lim, husband of former actress Krista Ranillo.

She shared on her Instagram: “Many of my closest friends have said that I look much happier these days. I attribute much of it to a job I’m passionate about, financial peace, being closer to loved ones, supportive friends and not to mention, the most amazing fans who shower me with never-ending words of encouragement (many visiting me from all over California to support @chirp.n.oink).”

Her plans of going back to the US since the late 1990s had finally come true.  “Maybe someday, I’ll be able to go back to the US, not really to become a big star because a lot of people say that getting the break in that country is difficult,” she shared from a previous interview.

Donita Rose Cavett in real life was previously married to Eric Villarama (2003), got separated in 2016. They have a son named Joshua Paul. Her American father is from Oklahoma and her Filipina mom is from Pangasinan.

MTV VJ days

Donita related from a previous interview that she was chosen as MTV VJ after passing with flying colors the station’s rigorous audition. Particularly, she was chosen because of her good command of English and her easy-to-get-along-with personality.

To be a VJ she said, love for music must be innate in you. Donita of course is a follower of hip hop, R & B, and fast music. “It wasn’t given to me in a silver platter. I auditioned several times. I just trust in the Lord. I’ve been praying for this job. I think it’s a confirmation that God wants this job for me,” she said from an earlier interview with this writer.

While she was in Singapore and enjoying a career-high, Donita was listed as the 12th “Most Gorgeous” woman by Singapore entertainment magazine, ETC., FHM listed her as well as number seven among “Asia’s Sexiest Women.”

She also did her first international film titled Legacy. In the movie, she was paired with actor-singer David Hasselhoff.

A happy childhood

Donita shared that she had a happy childhood since her family is family-oriented. “We are a close-knit family. My family and my other relatives would meet every day for a little get-together in our backyard,” she recalled. “It was really fun.”

When she was younger, Donita wanted to become a marine biologist. That didn’t materialize of course. “So I just took up scuba diving. I dive every now and then, but that’s basically about it,” she said.

Donita is the eldest in a brood of four. She was born in America where she lived for five years. Then her family moved to Subic, Zambales, and eventually to Manila when Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991.

An inclination for acting

Donita was encouraged by her mom Adelina Ramos Cavett to enter showbiz. The inclination to act came from her mom who is a singer-dance instructor, and who directs stage play for children. Donita used to appear in stage plays when she was a kid.

She was discovered by the late master showman German Moreno when she went to watch GMA 7’s former shows Lunch Date and That’s Entertainment. Then only 17, Donita was asked by German if she wanted to join the show. And the rest is history.

Donita on-screen is the same off-screen. “I’m a very predictable person. I don’t have major mood swings. And I’m a woman of substance,” she quipped.

A Christian herself, Donita makes it a point to read the Bible every day. “I’ve been raised a Christian all my life,” she pointed out. “Now, I have developed a more personal relationship with the Lord. I talk to Him every day. I feel that He is so near to me.”

Above all else, she experiences a greater sense of security. “I know that one day I’ll go to Heaven. And He is there waiting for me. What I like about my life now is that I don’t have to worry about yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I’m very much secured,” she disclosed.

Donita believes that perseverance has its own virtue. There are certain blessings that come from God. And she’s happy and proud of what she has achieved for herself.
