Bytes: Your Gateway to Manila, One Dish at a Time

This season, Lanson Place Mall of Asia invites guests to rediscover the Philippines through its most compelling language: food. At Bytes, the hotel’s all-Filipino dining destination, Gateway to Manila: Filipino Heritage Dishes unfolds as a limited-time, rotating à la carte experience that celebrates the depth, diversity, and evolving story of Filipino cuisine.

At the heart of the experience is Manila as a gateway—not only geographically, but historically. As a key port in the centuries-long Manila–Acapulco Galleon Trade, the city became a vital crossroads where ingredients, techniques, and traditions flowed between Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Spices, cacao, corn, and tomatoes from the New World met Chinese noodles, Malay influences, and Spanish culinary traditions—many of which would eventually find their way onto our tables.

Today, Manila’s culinary identity remains a melting pot of these global influences, shaped by the regions of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, and refined through centuries of exchange. This rich heritage forms the foundation of Bytes’ latest concept.

Running from May 15 to July 15, the campaign presents “Three Islands. Endless Stories.”—a thoughtfully curated journey across the Philippines, where each dish reflects regional identity, local ingredients, and time-honoured techniques, reimagined for today’s table.

A Modern Take on Heritage

At Bytes, tradition is not simply preserved—it is refined, reinterpreted, and shared. The menu features elevated yet approachable plates, designed for discovery and conversation. Familiar favourites take on new life through contemporary presentation while staying true to their roots—many carrying subtle traces of global influence shaped by centuries of trade.

Highlights from the menu include:

  • Beef Short Rib Kare-Kare with Bagoong Flatbread — a rich, slow-cooked classic paired
  • Suam na Mais with Bagnet and Poached Shrimp — a comforting Northern staple layered with texture
  • Papaitan with Grilled Glazed Sweet Potato — bold Ilocano flavors balanced with subtle sweetness
  • Chicken Inasal Skewers — smoky, vibrant, and perfect for casual indulgence
  • La Paz Batchoy — a Visayan icon, hearty and deeply satisfying
  • Sikwate & Puto Maya — a nostalgic Southern pairing, reimagined with elegant simplicity

Designed for Today’s Dining Culture

Gateway to Manila embraces a casual yet curated dining format, where guests can explore the menu at their own pace. Each plate is crafted to encourage a social dining experience that mirrors the Filipino tradition of gathering around food. Beyond flavour, the experience is story-driven—each dish offering a glimpse into the Philippines’ role in a wider global narrative. The result is a menu that feels both grounded and forward-looking, aligning with Lanson Place’s commitment to cultural relevance and modern hospitality.

A Celebration of Place

With its location at the heart of Manila’s dynamic lifestyle hub, Lanson Place Mall of Asia continues to position itself as a gateway—not just to the city, but to meaningful local experiences. Through Bytes, the hotel brings Filipino cuisine into sharper focus, presenting it as both deeply rooted and globally connected.

Gateway to Manila: Filipino Heritage Dishes 2026 is available exclusively at Bytes, Lanson Place Mall of Asia from May 15 to July 15, 2026.

Philippine Travel Mart Year 37: The Country’s Longest Running Travel Fair Returns in September 2026

The Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) announces the staging of the 37th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM)  on September 4 to 6, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Halls A–D.

For this year’s edition, the country’s longest-running travel fair carries the theme “Nurturing the NextGen Tourism,” supported by the campaign “Discover Your Philippines” —a call for Filipinos to explore more domestic destinations.

The three-day event will gather various exhibitors representing tour operators and travel agencies, hotels, resorts, airlines, and transport providers, Local Government Units, and other travel hospitality-related brands and services among many others. The Department of Tourism is giving its full support with all of the agency’s administrative regions (Regions 1-13, including the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Bangsa Moro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao taking part in the three-day travel fair.

The Philippine Travel Mart (PTM)  has long been a go-to destination for Filipinos hunting the best deals on their next trip. Attendees can expect on-site exclusive rates on tour packages, hotel accommodations, flights, and travel essentials. Whether mapping out a beach escape, a mountain adventure, or a family vacation, visitors can compare options and lock in deals across the country’s top destinations — all under one roof.

Special live performances, insightful talks and presentations will also be held at the event.

PHILTOA President and 37th PTM Organizing Committee Chair Ma. Lourdes F. Japson says the event reflects the industry’s continued commitment to local tourism: “As we mount the 37th Philippine Travel Mart, we are both proud and hopeful about the role we continue to play in strengthening domestic tourism. This year’s theme reflects our commitment to supporting a more resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking industry — one that creates opportunities not just for businesses, but for communities across the country. At a time when many Filipinos are more mindful of travel costs, we believe that exploring our own destinations remains one of the most meaningful ways to reconnect, recharge, and contribute to the local economy.”

The Philippine Travel Mart (PTM) is anchored on PHILTOA’s NextGen Tourism framework and its four institutional pillars: Sustainability, or promoting responsible and community-based travel; Digitalization, embracing modern tools for discovering and sharing destinations; Inclusivity, ensuring accessible experiences for all travelers; and Health and Wellness, championing travel that restores and enriches well-being.

SM Hotels’ Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo Marks Seven Years of Heartfelt Service

Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo officially marks its seventh year in the City of Love and Creative Gastronomy, celebrating a journey defined by Ilonggo hospitality, culinary showcase, and deep-rooted community partnerships.

The hotel’s continued success underscores the strength of the long-standing alliance between Radisson Hotel Group (RHG) and SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC). As the property celebrates this seven-year milestone, it reflects SMHCC’s larger commitment to developing world-class properties that boost local economies, foster regional tourism, and bring global hospitality standards to booming urban centers outside of Metro Manila.

“Seven years ago, we envisioned Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo as a landmark property that would add to the vibrant tourism landscape of Western Visayas,” said Ms. Peggy Angeles, Executive Vice President of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation. “Seeing it flourish into a beloved destination that marries global standards with local heart is immensely rewarding. This achievement is a testament to SMHCC’s enduring mission to create meaningful experiences and support sustainable community growth across the Philippines,” Ms. Angeles added.

Since its opening in 2019, the hotel has evolved into a cornerstone of Iloilo’s tourism landscape. This year’s anniversary theme, “Seven Years of Ilonggo Hospitality,” serves as a tribute to the warmth and authenticity that team members bring to every guest interaction.

Global Standards, Local Flavors

The past year has been marked by notable accomplishments that reflect the hotel’s pursuit of excellence while staying rooted in local identity. Most notably, Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo earned the Safehotels Certification, an internationally recognized benchmark affirming the property’s rigorous safety and security standards, while reinforcing its commitment to delivering trusted, world-class hospitality.

At the same time, the hotel continued to elevate regional flavors on the national stage. During the 16th National Food Showdown, the property’s culinary team earned a Gold medal for its signature Bibingka and Silver for Valenciana in the Professional Category, celebrating recipes deeply inspired by Ilonggo heritage. “Food is more than nourishment. It is one of the strongest connections we have to our culture,” said Rouel Guanzon, General Manager of Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo. “These recognitions honor the passion and dedication of our chefs, who continuously elevate the traditions that inspire us every day,” Mr. Guanzon added.

Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo team during their anniversary party on April 27, 2026.

Beyond culinary recognition, the property has embraced innovation as a way to deepen guest engagement and create more meaningful experiences. Recently, the hotel introduced StayPlease, a digital platform that allows guests to conveniently browse menus and order dining services directly from their devices that bring added ease and personalization to every stay.

That same spirit of innovation extends into preserving and sharing local narratives. Through Beyond the Plate, a masterclass developed in partnership with the Iloilo MICE Center, the hotel provided students and digital creators with opportunities to explore gastronomic storytelling and discover how food can become a medium for culture and identity.

The property also launched Panubli-on, a documentary-style series unveiled at its signature restaurant, Áni, spotlighting the stories behind iconic local dishes and the families who preserve them. Featured narratives included the Varonas family’s Adobado nga Lukon, Ms. Pinky Gorriceta-Jalandoni’s Bibingka, and the culinary heritage behind Kap Ising’s Pancit Molo.

Together, these initiatives reflect Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo’s belief that hospitality goes beyond service. Rather, it is also about creating spaces where traditions are celebrated, stories are shared, and communities remain connected.

Empowering People, Extending Care

The anniversary celebration also shines a spotlight on the individuals driving the hotel’s continued success. Ms. Lucky Alunan was recently recognized as the Front of House Winner at the SMHCC President’s Go Beyond Awards.

Meanwhile, General Manager Rouel Guanzon continues to strengthen industry collaboration through his leadership roles as Public Information Officer of the Iloilo Hotels, Restaurants and Resorts Association (IHRRA) and Committee Director of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Iloilo.

Beyond professional excellence, the hotel’s anniversary observance reflected its commitment to extending hospitality beyond its walls. In a gesture of gratitude to the city and community it has called home for seven years, the Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo team recently visited the Iloilo City Pound and Animal Shelter, where employees donated essential supplies and spent time supporting local rescue efforts alongside volunteers. “At its core, hospitality is about care,” Guanzon shared. “Whether we are serving a guest, supporting our local business community, or looking out for our four-legged friends, we believe these acts of kindness are what make Iloilo special,” Mr. Guanzon emphasized.

The week-long celebration culminated in a heartfelt anniversary gathering held on April 27, 2026, honoring the team members whose passion and dedication continue to shape the hotel’s story. The following day, Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo hosted a commemorative luncheon in recognition of its valued media partners, whose continued support has helped share the property’s journey and milestones through the years.

As Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo enters its eighth year, the property remains committed to delivering exceptional experiences rooted in heartfelt Ilonggo hospitality while continuing to celebrate local culture, empower communities, and create meaningful connections. More than a destination, the hotel strives to remain a true home away from home that blends modern comfort with the unmistakable warmth and grace that define Iloilo.

Okada Foundation, Inc. Donates Mobile Clinics to Ospital ng Parañaque

Okada Foundation Inc. (OFI), Okada Manila’s charitable arm, donated two fully equipped mobile clinic units to Ospital ng Parañaque Districts 1 and 2, supporting more accessible and community-based healthcare delivery.

The donation, valued at approximately PHP 39.6 million, equips both hospital units with a mobile clinic designed to support outreach programs and address the growing healthcare needs of Parañaque’s residents. This is especially critical for those in far-flung barangays, where access to routine check-ups, early diagnosis, and preventive care remains limited due to distance, mobility constraints, and the lack of nearby medical facilities.

“Okada Foundation Inc. is proud to support the City Government of Parañaque in bringing timely, reliable, and essential medical services to more communities. We believe that healthcare becomes more meaningful when it is brought closer to the communities it serves.” said OFI President James Lorenzana.

As demand for accessible healthcare continues to rise, mobile clinics play an increasingly vital role in extending services beyond hospital walls. Through these units, medical teams can deliver on-site consultations, minor treatments, and preventive care, allowing more residents to receive timely and appropriate medical attention within their own communities.

“These mobile clinics are equipped with essential medical services. They have X-ray machines, ultrasound, blood chemistry analysis, and their own examination room. In many ways, you can consider them as mini health centers that can be used for medical missions,” Lorenzana added.

Through initiatives like this, Okada Foundation Inc. continues to support stronger and more responsive local healthcare systems by bringing essential services closer today and helping build a more accessible and resilient future for Filipino communities.

Each mobile clinic was custom-built to function as a self-contained healthcare facility on wheels, enabling efficient and continuous service delivery. The units are equipped with an X-ray room, examination bed, laboratory sink, water supply system, and storage for medical equipment. They also feature a complete electrical system, including generator sets, power distribution, lighting, ventilation, and air-conditioning, ensuring reliable operations even in areas with limited infrastructure.

OFI formally turned over the mobile clinics on May 4, 2026 during a ceremony held at Parañaque City Hall following the morning flag ceremony. The turnover was graced by Parañaque City Mayor Edwin L. Olivarez and Okada Manila Board of Director and Board of Trustee, Mr. Mitsukazu Nakata.

With these mobile clinics now in service, Parañaque’s healthcare teams are better positioned to reach more communities, respond more quickly to patient needs, and deliver care where it matters most. Through initiatives like this, Okada Foundation Inc. continues to support stronger and more responsive local healthcare systems by bringing essential services closer today and helping build a more accessible and resilient future for Filipino communities.

About the Okada Foundation, Inc.

The Okada Foundation, Inc. is committed to providing assistance to three key sectors, namely, Education Infrastructure, Environment and Health, and Cultural Heritage. It, likewise, maintains working partnerships with like-minded organizations to provide services for the underprivileged and marginalized sectors of society.

The Travel Madness Expo 2026: The Great ‘Revenge Travel’ Revival and a New Era of Globetrotting Confidence

Visit the Travel Madness Expo (TME) 2026, happening from July 10 to 12 at the SMX Convention Center Manila (Halls 1–4).

For the past few months, global tourism has faced its fair share of turbulence. Heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and shifting economic anxieties caused many to pause, reconsider, and keep their passports tucked away in desk drawers. But wanderlust cannot be suppressed for long. Travelers are resilient, and the pent-up demand to explore, disconnect, and experience the world has reached a boiling point.

Enter the Travel Madness Expo (TME) 2026, happening from July 10 to 12 at the SMX Convention Center Manila (Halls 1–4).

As the countdown ticks closer, TME 2026 is positioning itself as the ultimate catalyst for the return of “Revenge Travel.” It’s not just a travel fair; it’s a massive injection of confidence for a world that is ready to fly again.

Overcoming the Turbulence: Confidence is the New Currency

There is no denying that recent international crises caused a temporary dip in travel enthusiasm. Safety concerns and fluctuating fuel surcharges made even seasoned jet-setters hesitate. However, history shows that the travel industry always bounces back—and the current shift is highly strategic.

Travelers are no longer staying home; instead, they are adapting. They are seeking out destinations that offer strong security, seamless logistics, and incredible value. Tourism boards and global airlines have doubled down on safety protocols, flexible booking policies, and robust itineraries to ensure that stepping onto a plane feels as secure as it is exciting.

TME 2026 arrives at the perfect psychological turning point. It provides a trusted physical marketplace where consumers can speak face-to-face with embassy representatives, top-tier tour operators, and airline executives, replacing uncertainty with solid peace of mind.

The “Revenge Travel” Sequel: Bigger, Smarter, and More Intentional

If the first wave of revenge travel was about going anywhere just to escape lockdown, Revenge Travel 2.0 is about going exactly where your heart desires—without compromise. People are realizing that life is too short to postpone the bucket list.

Whether it’s an iconic classic getaway to the USA—co-hosting this year’s massive FIFA World Cup—a culturally immersive trek through the historic towns of the Czech Republic and Georgia, a culinary deep-dive into Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Taiwan, or an off-the-beaten-path expedition to Papua New Guinea, the options are endless. From regional escapes to Thailand or Guam, to exploring the beautiful beaches of the Philippines right here at home, the collective desire to book flights is reaching a fever pitch.

TME 2026 is the ultimate playground for this revived enthusiasm. Spanning across four massive halls, the expo brings together the heavyweights of the aviation and hospitality industries. The message is loud and clear: The world is open, it is ready, and it is safe.

Unlocking the Best Deals: The Power of Strategic Partnerships

Of course, the desire to travel must be matched by the means to do so. With inflation weighing on everyone’s minds, TME 2026 is answering the call by offering exclusive, “event-only” rates that completely bypass standard online booking fees.

Adding to the momentum is the expo’s powerhouse partnership with Metrobank. As the official bank and credit card partner, Metrobank is giving travelers the financial leverage they need to turn dreams into boarding passes by providing exclusive partner perks like special credit card tier discounts, exclusive event-only booking rates and flexible “Book Now, Pay Later” installment plans.

By bridging the gap between aspiration and affordability, the financial barriers to entry are effectively being dismantled.

Get Your Passports Ready

We are just weeks away from the doors opening at the SMX Convention Center. The bags are practically packed, the itineraries are drafted, and the collective urge to explore is undeniable.

Despite the geopolitical hurdles of the past year, the human spirit remains fiercely curious. The Travel Madness Expo 2026 isn’t just about booking a flight—it’s about reclaiming the joy of discovery.

See you on the expo floor from July 10 to 12. Your next great adventure is waiting!

The Lind Hotels Helps Reshape Lifestyle Travel in the Philippines

Independent Filipino hospitality brands are beginning to reshape lifestyle travel in the Philippines—and The Lind Hotels is helping lead the shift.

Long overshadowed by larger regional markets dominated by international operators, the Philippines is increasingly gaining recognition for a new generation of homegrown hospitality brands focused on design, wellness, personalised service, and experience-led stays.

Among the companies helping drive that momentum is The Lind Hotels, an independently developed Filipino hospitality group that has steadily built a reputation through lifestyle-led destinations, strong culinary programming, wellness, and a distinctly Filipino approach to hospitality.

“Our philosophy is that Philippine hospitality can resonate globally while still remaining proudly Filipino,” said Pierre Henrichs, COO of The Lind Hotels. “Authenticity, warmth, creativity, and emotional connection are what travellers increasingly remember most.”

At the centre of the group’s success is The Lind Boracay, located on White Beach Station 1, widely regarded as Boracay’s most exclusive stretch of shoreline. The property is distinguished not only by its rare direct beachfront access, but also by an evolving guest experience that places intuitive hospitality and meaningful guest connection at the heart of the stay.

A defining milestone came in 2025 when the MICHELIN Guide made its Philippine debut. In a landmark moment for both the company and the wider industry, The Lind Boracay became the first and only hotel in Boracay to be featured by the guide, positioning the independent Filipino brand alongside internationally recognised hospitality names.

A key part of the resort’s evolution is its long-standing collaboration with The Spa Wellness, one of the Philippines’ pioneering wellness operators and the country’s first spa brand to receive Superbrand status. An accredited member of the International Spa Association (ISPA), The Spa Wellness brings an established wellness philosophy into the resort environment, helping shape a more holistic guest experience centred around restoration, balance, and meaningful care.

Over the past decade, the group has continued refining every aspect of the guest journey, from food and beverage and wellness to lifestyle programming and personalised service.

The company’s recent evolution forms part of a broader reassessment undertaken during its tenth anniversary year, when The Lind Hotels also introduced a refreshed brand identity centred around human connection, meaningful hospitality, and more experience-driven travel.

The rebrand marked a return to the company’s core philosophy: fostering stronger people-to-people relationships across teams, travel partners, suppliers, and guests, while placing greater emphasis on the guest journey from the very first stage of trip planning through to the stay itself.

“As part of our ten-year milestone, we went back to the drawing board and asked ourselves where we were ten years ago and where we are today,” Henrichs said. “The entire brand has been refreshed. More than anything, we wanted to return to the human side of hospitality and focus on genuine connection at every touchpoint of the guest experience. Hospitality is about continual improvement and adapting to what modern travellers are looking for.”

Looking ahead, the company’s future developments in Coron and Siargao reflect both confidence in Philippine tourism and growing international demand for more meaningful, nature-driven, and experience-led travel.

At a time when travellers are increasingly prioritising authenticity over standardisation, brands like The Lind Hotels are helping demonstrate that world-class hospitality experiences can be created in the Philippines while remaining closely connected to local culture, people, and place.

“We believe the Philippines has the potential to become one of the world’s great hospitality destinations,” Henrichs said. “There is incredible warmth here, extraordinary natural beauty, and a growing confidence among Filipino brands to create experiences that feel globally relevant while still remaining distinctly local.”

How the CCP Front-of-House Apprenticeship Program Champions Inclusivity for Senior Citizens

At an age when many people are expected to slow down, three senior citizens from Pasay City find themselves at the heart of the country’s cultural scene, reinvigorating their golden years through the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ special Front-of-House (CCP FOH) Apprenticeship Program, a simple apprenticeship program which becomes the start of a meaningful addition to their lives.

Through a partnership with the city’s Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) in 2024, senior ushers Sarah Escosora, Marte Aragon and Bubot Manalang participated in the apprenticeship program which aims to open doors for older Filipinos to be an active member of the arts and culture community.

The ushering apprenticeship lasted for a month and included lectures, fieldwork, venue exposure trips, and first aid training. The seniors were immersed not only in audience management, but also in the values of culture, education, and service.

Nagbigay-diin sila sa kultura, sining, at edukasyon. Yun ‘yung naging focus ng training namin,” shared 63-year-old Manalang who is a barangay public servant.

The CCP’s Front-of-House Apprenticeship program reflects the Center’s mandate to transform lives through the arts. Aside from senior citizens, the program has also welcomed and trained deaf and hard-of-hearing participants to be at the forefront of cultural work.

“Being a part of the CCP gives me a sense of purpose,” shared 66-year-old Escosora who is the senior president of Barangay 37 and a barangay kagawad. Escosora was among the first batch of senior citizen ushers selected for the pioneering program.

“It gives me a reason to continue learning even though I am already a senior. Na-feel ko na may purpose ako, and I belong in a community,” she shared.

Initially, there were 10 applicants who were accepted. Two eventually had to step back due to health concerns and scheduling conflicts, leaving eight ushers who continued with their apprenticeship journey and eventually became part of the CCP Venue Operations Division’s ushering team.

“So far, ‘yung eightna nagtuloy, buo pa rin after two years. It goes to show that we really enjoy this kasi tuloy-tuloy pa rin kami. Napakarami naming natutunan. Kahit na senior na kami, we still look forward to having new experiences, and meeting new people,” said Aragon, a 66-year-old retired export manager.

For Aragon, the opportunity felt like a homecoming. He once worked at the CCP as a public relations officer in the 1980s. Before working for corporate, he had been involved with the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), where he crossed paths with now-renowned theater figures such as Pen Medina and Joel Lamangan.

What made the apprenticeship experience all the more special was gaining access to performances they otherwise may never have seen.

“Nakakapanood na ako ng shows na hindi ko mapapanood kung hindi ako usher kasi mahal ang tickets,” admitted Escosora. “Double benefits din – nakakapag-serve kami at the same time nakakapag-enjoy at nakakanood ng shows.”

Their assignments range from children’s theater productions to major cultural events. One of the most memorable moments for the group came during the public tribute following the passing of National Artist for Film and Broadcast Nora Aunor.

“Pinag-duty kaming lahat na senior citizen dahil lahat kami kilala si Nora,” Aragon laughed. “Memorable ‘to sa akin kasi lahat ng friends ko na di ko na nakikita, doon ko pa sila nakita.”

For the ushers, however, the experience extends far beyond the grand events or the pay.

“Kahit late na late na ‘yung sweldo, walang nagrereklamo kasi it is not about the pay — it is the experience, the belongingness. Sobrang alaga kami ng management, sobrang welcome kami at pampered,” emphasized Aragon.

Escosora agreed, saying: “Alagang-alaga talaga kami. Pinapaupo kami lagi kapag start na ‘yung show para raw di kami mapagod.”

The work has also given structure and excitement to their daily lives, with many of them stating how their duties provided them something to look forward to again. They hope that the younger generation would also be as eager to experience art outside of their screens.

“They should cherish the opportunity to go to live shows and live performances,” Escosora said. “Cherish our culture. Support the artists and go beyond the digital way.”

Manalang echoed the sentiment, encouraging young Filipinos to remain curious about the arts and the people behind them. “Nakita ko kasi talaga how dedicated the artists are to their craft. They deserve so much appreciation and support,” she said.

Aragon reflected on: “In nature, Filipinos are very creative. Naniniwala ako na lahat ng Pilipino ay magaling sa sining, kaya dapat lang na suportahan at payabungin natin ito.”

In many ways, the senior ushers embody the very mission of the CCP: to make art meaningful and accessible to the public. The stories of the CCP’s senior citizen ushers remind that culture thrives not only through artists and performers, but also through the communities who sustain and protect it.

For over five decades, the CCP has stood as the country’s premier institution for the promotion and preservation of Philippine arts and culture. Beyond staging world-class performances and nurturing artists, the institution has also continued to expand its programs toward inclusivity and community participation. Through initiatives such as the Front-of-House Apprenticeship program for senior citizens, the CCP demonstrates that there will always be a place for every Filipino who wishes to take part in keeping the arts alive.

Threads of Legacy: HABI Opens National Piña and Abaca Weaving Competitions

Submission deadline: August 15, 2026.  Awarding ceremonies to be held during the 16th Likhang Habi Market Fair at Space One Ayala, Makati City.

HABI: The Philippine Textile Council opens the call for entries to two of the country’s most prestigious textile competitions: the
9th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition and the 5th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition, continuing a long-standing commitment to safeguard, celebrate, and advance the artistry of Philippine handwoven textiles.

Held as the centerpiece events of the 16th Likhang Habi Market Fair from October 9 to 11, 2026 at Space at One Ayala, Makati City, the competitions honor the mastery, innovation, and cultural legacy carried by generations of Filipino weavers.

Together, the competitions have become important platforms for recognizing excellence in piña and abaca weaving — traditions deeply woven into the nation’s history and identity, and sustained today by artisan communities across the archipelago.

“The most encouraging aspect of  these weaving competitions is the response of the weavers themselves — how they rise imaginatively to the challenge,” says Adelaida Lim, president emeritus of HABI. “Each entry piece is pure delight. I always look forward to the surprises.”

Honoring Masters, Preserving Traditions

Named after educator, cultural advocate, and author of the landmark book Piña, the Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition celebrates the extraordinary craftsmanship and evolving artistry of pineapple fiber weaving.

Entries are accepted in the following categories:

  • Liniwan — plain weave demonstrating fineness, uniformity, and technical excellence
  • Pure Piña — highlighting the beauty and creative potential of pure piña fiber
  • Natural Fiber Blends — encouraging innovation through combinations of piña with silk (seda), jusi, cotton, or abaca

All entries must measure at least two meters in length.

The Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition was established through the initiative of Dom Martin Gomez, OSB — formerly haute couture designer Gang Gomez — and his siblings, in honor of their mother’s lifelong dedication to Philippine textiles and traditional attire.

The competition welcomes entries in these categories:

  • Resist Dye on Abaca — featuring ikat and related resist-dye techniques
  • Abaca Craft — showcasing craftsmanship through macramé, crochet, tatting, bobbin lace, and related techniques
  • Abaca Nipis — recognizing fineness, uniformity, and weaving skill in sheer abaca cloth

All entries must be made from 100% abaca fiber and measure at least two meters in length.

Awards and Recognition

Winners in each category will receive cash prizes and special citations. Separately, the competition also confers two special distinctions: the Nadres Young Weaver Award and the Filip + Inna Innovation Award, each recognizing excellence in distinct aspects of weaving practice and innovation.

Entries will be evaluated by an esteemed panel composed of experts from the fields of fashion, textile arts, heritage conservation, and academe, including heirs of Lourdes Montinola and Eloisa Hizon Gomez.

Last year’s competitions drew outstanding entries from weaving communities nationwide. Winners of the 8th Lourdes Montinola Piña Weaving Competition included Rosemarie Loveras (Liniwan), Melanie Palmon (Pure Piña), and Raquel Eliserio (Natural Fiber Blends).

At the 4th Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving Competition, honors went to Ulaniban Laginan (Resist Dye on Abaca), Myra Iledan and Arlene Yamog (Abaca Craft), and Arnie I. Almero (Abaca Nipis).

All accepted entries will be exhibited at the 16th Likhang Habi Market Fair, offering the public an opportunity to experience the richness and continuing evolution of Philippine textile traditions.

The awarding ceremony for the Piña competition will be held on October 10, while the Abaca competition awarding will take place on October 11.

“What is exciting are the different and higher quality designs that come from past tradition enhanced by modern ideas of decoration,” says Maribel Ongpin, HABI Chairman Emeritus.

“We hope that many traditional weavers will join and that many younger weavers will be inspired to join, too.  The combination of young and old, tradition and innovation, is always exciting,” she adds.

The competition is open to all Filipinos residing in the Philippines. Interested parties can send their creations to the Habi office at 962 May Street, Mandaluyong City before the deadline on August 15, 2026.
