ManilART2021: The National Art Fair– Beyond regional, beyond physical

ManilART is the flagship activity of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)’s Museums and Galleries Month (MGM), celebrated every October. In its thirteenth year, ManilART observes the theme “Continuing Legacies,” resuming its regular programming from October 20-24 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig City.

Continuing traditions

ManilART was established on the backbone of professional galleries representing world-class Filipino artists on the world stage.  Living masters of Philippine art continue to headline the top-caliber roster of the fair. These artists have won both local and international accolades, participated in prestigious programs, exhibited around the globe, and built the monuments we see around us today. They are representative of the degree of excellence of the times and give collectors and enthusiasts the unparalleled opportunity to view and meet in person the works and the masters themselves.

“Symphony in Blue” by Aracelli Dans will be exhibited this year at ManilART 2021.

Araceli Dans. At 94, multi-awarded Dans, whose previous exhibition was at ManilART 2018, returns this year. Mentored by National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino, she has built a lifelong legacy of works representing the consummate Filipina artist and educator. Best known for her calado embroidery subject, she continues to paint fine and large-scale works coveted by top collectors over the decades.

Ramon Orlina’s “Family United” was seen in ManilART 2020.

Ramon Orlina. Orlina is unparalleled in the field of glass sculpture. Over five decades, he has continued to innovate techniques and push the envelope towards refining the play of light and glass in his pieces as best reviewed at the eponymous Museo Orlina in Tagaytay. This year, his works are brought to a new experiential level as will be unveiled in the first-ever phygital exhibition in the Philippines.

Romulo Galicano. A mainstay of ManilART since its inception, Galicano continues to chronicle contemporary history in his romantic realist style. Recipient of many local and international accolades, most recently a three-peat at the American Art Awards, he brings his award-winning style to render current events in grand, semi-mural scaled works.

Nemiranda. Nemesio Miranda, Jr. is another chronicler of history through many works of private and public art. From his EDSA Shrine murals, People Power monument to the “Way of Mary” stations stretching from Mandaluyong to Antipolo, Nemiranda contributes his narrative to the Quincentennial celebrations in highlighting the 500 years from the Victory of Mactan to present-day heroes in pandemic times.

Balai Kalipay houses large murals by Kublai Millan as well as a collection of works by other artists.

Kublai Millan. Representing indigenous and contemporary art of Mindanawons, monument maker Millan brings a Mindanao perspective to the table. Best-known for public sculptures including the “Durian Genesis Lore” at the Davao Airport, he spearheads Mindanao Art Fair as well as a ManilART satellite exhibit of Balai Kalipay, co-presented with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Sowing for the Future

Legacies are built over time. The younger set today lay the groundwork for their place in our artistic patrimony in the years to come with their consistent excellence and dedication to their craft. Sought-after new generation talents today put their best foot forward in this annual event. These include Francis Nacion, Jonathan Dangue, Melissa Yeung Yap, Wencyl Mallari, Kenneth Montegrande, and Katrina Cuenca, among scores of others.

Extending reach off-site

In past years, like the National Art Fair, aside from physically bringing exhibits to the main fair proper, ManilART has brought art caravans throughout the three island groups. As world events unfolded, this caravan has been innovated to take the form of online virtual exhibitions. While physically set up in situ, 360-degree walkthroughs on ManilART’s portal brings audiences virtually to visit the shows simultaneously happening “Off-site” during the fair. This brings art straight to the homes and screens of audiences while remaining bound in its context and place. Synchronously with the “On-site” fair, the portal brings together a shared experience in the celebration of art and a one-stop-shop for the online visitor to virtually experience art “under one roof.” This year, six satellite shows are offered located in different cities in Luzon and Mindanao.

Entrance of Balai Kalipay in Davao.

Balai Kalipay. Balai Kalipay is located in the mountainous Malagos area of Davao City. It was built and spearheaded by renowned Mindanawon sculptor Kublai Millan, whose works and advocacies have been prominently featured in ManilART. Its name translates to “House of Joy,” and its vision is to chronicle both indigenous and contemporary Mindanao art. This is jointly undertaken by ManilART and the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Cultural Diplomacy Unit.

Likhang Silangan. Rizal has also garnered a name for itself in the art scene as the Cradle of Philippine Art, with its municipality of Angono named the Arts Capital of the Philippines. As such, “Likhang Silangan: The Art EASTory of Rizal,” shall be held from October 10 to 23 at Angkla Art Gallery in Angono. There is already a decorated list of local visual art legends such as the late National Artists Carlos “Botong” Francisco, and Vicente Manansala, as well as 19th-century artist Juan “Tandang Juancho” Senson.

Tarlac Art. The Heart of Luzon shall forge its own legacy in the realm of arts and culture. “Tarlac Art ” will run from October 1 to 22 at Diwa ng Tarlac. This is to be the first visual arts exhibit exclusively showcasing artists from Tarlac. This is a collaborative effort between ManilART and Tarlac’s Provincial Government.

Casa Carlitos. Philippine sculpture lost one of its most unique and pre-eminent living greats with the sudden passing of Carlitos Ortega. The museum cafe preserves some of his works in brass sculpture and design and will be inaugurated as a satellite exhibit and tribute.

Beyond physical borders – Introducing the Phygital

With the advent of the digital stage, ManilART opened its online portal last year to bring audiences to a better experience of the Fair via 360-degree virtual walkthroughs. But a virtual peek is only the beginning of the journey, soon art will be ushered to a truly digital age with the introduction of virtual galleries and collections where art in digital format will exist alongside physical art. The time will come when entire virtual museums can be uploaded to the cloud and transported globally and beyond.

ManilART2021 debuts its first “phygital” exhibitor. G9 ONline will mount a phygital show which will showcase a digital work as an NFT, alongside the physical original as painting or sculpture. The Non-fungible Token (NFT) is a digitally encrypted rendition of an original work that can be considered a “digital print or multiple” based on a physical artwork. The NFT is viewable and displayable in a virtual gallery and can be traded on the crypto market similar to crypto art. Its non-fungible character means that the digital rendition is original and does not simply capture or grab an image online. It has a traceable provenance and may be considered an enhancement on the physical piece.

For the initial collection, limited edition proofs will be released of the works of Ramon Orlina, Ed Coronel, Bell Sison, Isobel Francisco, among others.

“Diversity” by Ed Coronel will have an accompanying Non-fungible Token (NFT).

Philippine Quincentennial

ManilART joins in the quincentennial commemorations through activities and exhibits co-presented at the NQC-ManilART Lounge with the National Quincentennial Committee and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

ManilART2021 is co-presented with the Bonafide Art Galleries Organization (BAGO), ManilART Foundation, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as a Museums and Galleries Month presentation. It is supported by partners I Love Taguig, Think Big Taguig, Vision Prime Media, Future Studios, Ladder Events Production, Ticketbooth.ph, Metro Channel, Metro.Style, ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), SMNI News Channel, DZAR Sonshine Radio 1026, People’s Journal, BusinessWorld, Alike Media Inc., FrontpagePH, asian Dragon, Click The City, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin, Art+ Magazine, Inquirer.net, Inquirer POP! Home Base Plus, The Market Monitor, Hue TVEverywhere, Chinese Journal Today, Experience Travel and Living Magazine, Manileño, WhenInManila.com, Good Morning Kuya (GMK), The Manila Times, Wish 107.5, Boracay Beach Radio 97.3, Q Radio 105.1, and Don Papa Rum.

ManilART will run from October 13-17 at the third level of the SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig City. For more details, visit www.manilart.com or follow ManilART’s social media pages on Facebook and Instagram (@manilartfair).

How to look like a beauty queen

The ageless Gloria Diaz tells us her beauty regimen to maintain that Miss Universe look. She believes in the old adage that “you are as old as you look and feel, you are the age you are.”

Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz has retained that Miss Universe look after all these years. She conducts herself with flair and elan.

Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, who appeared as a guest star on Netflix’s hit series “Insatiable” and portrayed a character based on herself, has retained that Miss Universe look after all these years. Photo courtesy of Netflix.

Gloria believes in the old adage that “you are as old as you look and feel, you are the age you are.” What keeps her radiant is maintaining a lifestyle of moderation, meaning, not too much alcohol, not too much late night-outs, and adhering to the saying, “early to bed, early to rise.”

Just like other figure-conscious women, she stays fit by engaging in constant exercise and watching her diet. Every day she goes to the gym to flex some muscles and from time to time undergo a massage treatment to lessen the pain and stiffness of her body.

She doesn’t really follow any special diet, although she chooses to eat more fruits and vegetables. “Quite often, I also eat junk foods,” she admitted from the previous interview. She takes care of her hair by using fewer chemicals like hair spray and other similar stuff.

One of her stunning assets is her almost flawless skin. She scrubs her body with a loofah (a rough sponge) and sometimes had it done in the parlor. Then she applies lotion to her skin. But most importantly, she says, is to take lots of vitamins and calcium.

For her face, she makes sure that it’s clean before she goes to bed. “I only use heavy makeup when I’m shooting or taping. You can’t help that. Otherwise, I just apply a little bit of eye makeup and lipstick,” she tells.

“It was worth a try,” she says of her experience in winning a Miss Universe title. “You must enter into it with an open mind that it’s not the be-all and end-all if you win or not win. Life goes on, and there can only be one winner. Fortunately, I came out on top.”

Doing Good for the Oceans

As part of its Sustainability Program, Watsons Philippines has entered a collaboration with Plastic Bank to help reduce plastic pollution and alleviate poverty by creating livelihood.

Plastic waste is a big problem for the environment and humanity in general: Every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean. If this continues unabated, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans in 30 years. Sadly, the Philippines is one of the top 3 contributors to this plastic problem.

Sustainability has always been part of the Watsons DNA. Recognizing that the ocean stores a quarter of CO2 from the atmosphere and up to 93.4% of heat caused by the greenhouse effect, Watsons is committed to reducing the overall impact of its own brand plastic packaging so that it may contribute to ocean protection.

The A.S. Watsons Group has banned the use of microplastics in its own brand of rinse-off cosmetics or personal care products since 2014. By the end of 2019, this ban has been extended to all brands so no rinse-off cosmetics or personal care products from any brand are sold at any Watsons stores.

Watsons Philippines offers its customers four Sustainable Choices: Clean Beauty (mindfully created products without “unwanted” ingredients), Refill and Reduce (refilling bottles and reusing containers), Better Ingredients, and Better Packaging.

Through its Impact Program Collaboration with Plastic Bank, the health, wellness, and beauty retailer will continue to Do Good for the Oceans by committing to the prevention of 50,000 kg of plastic bottles from entering the world’s oceans – the equivalent of 2.5 million bottles over the first 12 months.

“At the heart of Look Good, Feel Great is Do Good. Watsons has always been at the forefront of sustainability and this collaboration with Plastic Bank only further reinforces our commitment to helping make this world a better place,” said Viki Encarnacion, Watsons PR and Sustainability Director.

Plastic Bank Philippines

“We are happy to team up with Watsons Philippines – a company that shares our vision on creating a regenerative economy. This collaboration showcases our unified goal of stopping ocean plastic while creating more opportunities for people living in vulnerable coastal communities,” said David Katz, Founder, and CEO of Plastic Bank.

FENIX® Innovative Materials Open New Doors to the Philippines Interiors Market

Formica Philippines rises higher in the country’s interior design industry by becoming the exclusive distributor of the FENIX range presenting innovative materials designed in Italy.

Following a significant and well-established presence of FENIX® in the Philippines market for interiors, Formica Philippines strengthens its positioning by becoming the exclusive distributor of these innovative materials.

The new relationship between Arpa Industriale and Formica Group dates back to June 2019 with the acquisition of Formica Group by Broadview Holding B.V. Since then, Formica Group has joined Arpa Industriale S.p.A., Trespa International B.V., and Westag & Getalit AG as part of Broadview’s family of businesses in the field of material technology. The main focus, which connotes the sister companies, is on coordinated strategy and synergies, with the main goal to offer customers world-class surface materials.

As the main result of this new partnership, Formica Asia expands its product portfolio in the Philippines to include the award-winning FENIX® range through its distribution network. In the Philippines market, Formica Philippines is the exclusive distributor of FENIX starting April 1, 2021.

FENIX is the innovative materials created for interior design by Arpa Industriale in 2013. They arise from the Italian design tradition, reflected in the project stylistic choices: from the colors selection to the overall aesthetic result of the interiors applications. Applying proprietary technologies, the external surface of FENIX is characterized by the use of next-generation acrylic resins, hardened and fixed through an Electronic Beam Curing process. With low light reflectivity, the FENIX surface is extremely opaque, soft touch, and anti-fingerprint. Thermal healing of superficial micro-scratches is also possible. They are suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications in the following sectors: kitchens, bathrooms, design furniture, retail, offices, and contract.

The FENIX family includes:
FENIX NTM®: the first to be introduced in 2013 to meet the market request for smart materials and matt surfaces: it is available in 20 refined and timeless colors. Colors have been selected to highlight and match the latest trends in interior design: a collection of silent elegant colors, enriched by the very recent addition of Bianco Dover to complete the palette of whites. All its innovative features – a matt, soft touch, and anti-fingerprint surface, as well as the possible thermal healing of superficial micro-scratches – make FENIX NTM the smart material.

FENIX NTA®: its empowered metallic surface features the same characteristics as FENIX. Hence, it is extremely matt with visual comfort and a very pleasant soft touch, as well as anti-fingerprint. Thermal healing of superficial micro-scratches is also possible. The metallic color range includes Acciaio Hamilton, Argento Dukat, and Oro Cortez. Among its pluses, FENIX NTA is suitable both for vertical and horizontal application, and is easy to work with standard carpenters tools, such as regular cutting, milling, polishing, and drilling tools; it is also customizable with laser engraving techniques and CNC machining.

A new system concept consolidates the role of FENIX as an ingredient brand aimed at offering aesthetic solutions and simplifications for the interiors, with the result to engage our customers as true partners in exploiting the value-creation opportunities offered by our innovative ‘ingredients’, as well as in the launching of newly co-developed projects. This system is called “FENIX INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS. Kitchen Sinks”, a collection of sinks designed to be integrated with kitchen worktops made of FENIX NTM. Products are made from acrylic resin with an extremely matt finish, allowing for a perfect integration between the FENIX NTM worktop and the sink in kitchen designs. Two models and fourteen FENIX NTM colors are available in the catalog.

Innovation and sustainability are two core values for the whole Group, whose objective is to foresee and create cutting-edge aesthetic and technical solutions designed with sustainability in mind. These values are perfectly summed up in FENIX materials: the smart surface of FENIX with its innovative features made with proprietary technology has struck the world of interiors; its more natural core, thanks to the use of lignin in the formulation of thermosetting resins, represents not only a more sustainable choice but at the same time a significant technical innovation. This is possible thanks to Arpa’s constant investment in research and development.

With this new distribution partnership in the Philippines with its sister company Formica Asia, a new core value is likewise highlighted: the sharing of a common vision to support a mutually profitable long-term growth and, above all, to offer Philippines designers and customers innovative surface solutions for new neverending design stories.

Huawei Hosts an Energy Summit — Digital Energy, Powering the Low Carbon Era

[Shenzhen, China] Huawei hosted the Energy Summit online, which was held within the framework of Huawei Connect 2021 and themed “Digital Energy, Powering the Low Carbon Era”. During the summit, customers and partners discussed best practices in using new technologies to transition the energy industry toward carbon neutrality. Huawei also released the Global Energy Transition and Zero Carbon Development White Paper and shared its Energy Trans-Cube Strategy.

Energy Trans-Cube, Creating New Value for the Industry

After signing the Paris Agreement in 2015, more countries than ever before are committed to carbon neutrality and are taking positive actions to address climate change. Each one follows a different path, suitable to its resource profile, energy, and environment. “Despite the strong will to go carbon neutral, we need to take into account three challenges: green and low carbon development, economic development, as well as the security and continuity of energy supply. The convergence of energy transformation and digital transformation will pave the digital way for carbon neutrality,” said David Sun, Vice President of Huawei Enterprise BG and President of the Global Energy Business Unit. He added, “Huawei has developed a Trans-Cube methodology. It suggests that to get closer to a net-zero carbon intelligent energy system and achieve global zero-carbon development, we should build three core capabilities — net-zero carbon transformation, energy transformation, and digital transformation.”

The first capability — net-zero carbon transformation — will help various industries manage their carbon assets, and implement de-carbonization actions suitable to their specific contexts. In the process, they will go from low-carbon to near-zero carbon, and eventually achieve carbon neutrality.

Then, energy transformation will make energy production and consumption more reliable, secure, and efficient, transforming from a single centralized system to a diversified, distributed, and integrated one. The ultimate goal is to achieve multi-energy coordination and optimize efficiency.

Last but not least, there is digital transformation, which will enable the industry to transform from information-based to digital, and finally intelligent. With data at its core, digital transformation will enable net-zero carbon transformation and energy transformation.

Three Core Capabilities of Zero-carbon Smart Energy System.

White Paper Release — New Ideas to Lead the Industry

According to Guo Xiaobo, Energy expert at Deloitte China, going carbon neutral means achieving energy transformation and zero-carbon development as soon as possible, using more renewable resources, changing the way we use energy, and using new technologies to reduce emissions. Based on this, the Global Energy Transition and Zero Carbon Development White Paper analyzes the key factors affecting energy transition and proposes a new plan for the energy sector — building a net-zero intelligent energy system.

Blueprint of Zero-carbon Smart Energy System.

The said system focuses on interconnecting oil, gas, electricity, heat, and hydrogen systems, and aims to achieve secure, reliable, efficient, cost-effective, and clean energy. Anthony Hu, Chief Representative for Energy Transition (Carbon Neutrality), Global Energy Business Unit of Huawei Enterprise BG, said, “The architecture of the net-zero intelligent energy system will interconnect the energy system, carbon system, and ICT infrastructure as well as eventually converging energy, carbon, information, and value flows. Gradually, it will form a system with data at its core, promoting the digitalization of the energy industry.”

Anthony Hu, Chief Representative for Energy Transition (Carbon Neutrality), Global Energy Business Unit of Huawei Enterprise BG.

Drive Data to Barrel, Embrace Intelligence to Grow

The digital transformation and intelligent development of the oil and gas industry are still in their infancy. According to Lv Gongxun, Senior Consultant of Huawei and Former General Manager of China National Corporation for Exploration and Development of Oil and Gas (CNODC), digital transformation signals four opportunities for the industry: rebuilding business models, transforming management models, innovating business models, and accelerating transformation and value growth.

Lv Gongxun also discussed the value of the cloud for the oil and gas industry: “Cloud technologies enable centralized information resource planning, intelligent management and control, flexible provisioning, convenient services, and high security and efficiency. They will transform the existing business models.”

Lv Gongxun, Senior Consultant of Huawei and Former General Manager of CNODC.

Power grids are another important area of energy transformation, rapidly evolving with new technologies. In this context, Felix Chifwaila, Senior Manager of Electro-Technical Services at ZESCO, introduced the role of video and AI in improving grid O&M capabilities. For example, visualizing channel data leads to fewer operational risks and makes inspection 80 times more efficient. Video and AI also help detect potential faults in time, helping eliminate 90% of power outages every year. Having an intelligent inspection platform and apps leads to 30% more efficient emergency response and maintenance. Like many others, Huawei started out as a non-digital native enterprise. This means that the company has accumulated extensive experience and lessons learned through both internal projects and industry practices. It has a first-hand understanding of the challenges traditional enterprises face during digital transformation and has paved a “digital way” for the transformation and development of the energy industry.

Huawei hosts HUAWEI CONNECT 2021 online from September 23 to October 31. The theme of this year’s event is Dive into Digital.
