MVP takes pride in promoting Batangas as one of the country’s top tourist destinations

A pause to recharge or reimagining a future that empowers Filipinos to co-build a more robust tourism industry in Batangas, Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) is not your conventional business leader as he strikes a balance of both endeavors.

As Chairman of the infrastructure conglomerate Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) and other numerous companies that provide essential services, MVP stays on top of the company’s COVID-19 response in support of the government efforts. At the same time, he jumpstarts the preparedness of the Philippine economy to bounce back from the global health crisis with his vision for tourism in Batangas.

MVP leads his team to have courage in facing the future with bright prospects through the uncertainties. He does all these while he visits the pristine beauty of the Landco’s latest Leisure Tourism Estates (LTE) – the 15-hectare Calatagan South Beach, better known as CaSoBē.

“Through Landco Pacific Corp.’s latest beachside projects: CaSoBē and Club Laiya, I take pride in promoting Batangas as one of the country’s top tourist destinations. These properties are responsibly developed to preserve the cultural and natural features of the place; provide employment for locals; and give Filipinos an opportunity to recover from these unprecedented times by not just building their dream beach homes but opting to create Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that cater to the tourism market,” MVP stated.

Aquaria, Millenial Resorts’ Facilities at CaSoBe.

These master-planned estates are the newest projects of upscale real estate developer Landco, a subsidiary of MPIC. These developments under Landco BeachTowns are close to MVP’s heart as he foresees these lively leisure and tourism destinations in Batangas as the next big thing. The country’s answer to some of the world’s most vibrant beachside destinations: Ibiza, Spain; Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Capri, Italy.

For more than three decades, Landco made its mark in developing exclusive and luxurious properties around the country. One of its leading projects is Peninsula de Punta Fuego, a premiere luxury seaside residential community situated on the 88-hectare of pristine coastline in Nasugbu, Batangas.

Leveraging tourism as one of the key drivers for the country’s growth when it emerges from these challenging times, Landco with the leadership of MVP envisions a revolutionary and innovative new concept.

Landco CEO Erickson Y. Manzano supports MVP’s vision to position the LTE as thriving and inclusive seaside communities in the travel and leisure destination of Batangas, inspiring entrepreneurship and work-life harmony.

“It’s a gamechanger approach. Instead of making it exclusive, it’s open to the tourism market but remains aspirational and premium,” said Manzano. “It presents an opportunity for budding Filipino entrepreneurs or those who would like to work closely with nature. Eventually, the place will not just be a hotspot for local tourists but for inbound travelers from abroad,” he added.

CaSoBē offers a mix of seaside residential homes, and beachside retail and commercial establishments. There’s a Retail Row, a Harbour Walk, and an Activity Block – with lot sizes ranging from 356 square meters to 890 square meters. All these lots are near the beach and paved with pedestrian streets. There’s a common area estate WIFI, 24/7 security with CCTV, a beach promenade, and a hotel-inspired property management service.

It’s is a haven for those who prefer more privacy and a laidback and intimate lifestyle. It is near Cape Santiago lighthouse, a golf course, Little Boracay sandbar, Starfish island, and the underwater pyramid.

MVP at CaSoBe.

Located on the other side of the Batangas coastline, the 24-hectare Club Laiya features a combination of residential and commercial-ready lots in the tourist spot of San-Juan Laiya Road.  It’s a choice destination for the stylish and chic leisure seekers who love to work on their tan, get into water sports, and hang out in the hottest party scenes. A row of diverse resorts, restaurants, and bars already dots its shores.

Two to three hours away from Metro Manila, CaSoBē and Club Laiya are both LEED-registered with Landco’s commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.

MVP attests to CaSoBē’s significance as a tourist destination and an ideal work from the beach venue in the new normal. His business calendar was filled with Zoom meetings and online conferences with a seaside view and assistance from the warm and friendly local staff.

Helmed by Landco’s Senior Consultant for Hospitality Patrick C. Gregorio, the Edge-registered Millennial Resorts Corporation (MRC) is the hospitality service provider within the LTE. MRC owns and operates unconventional accommodations: Cocoons and Crusoe Cabins, select leisure facilities: Laiya Beach Club at Club Laiya and Aquaria, a waterpark with a three-story giant slide at CaSoBē These are the tourism attractions for which the properties are known.

Landco projects are in line with MPIC’s commitment to helping achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable; and strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

For MVP, coming home to a tropical paradise in these LTEs is a breeze. It’s going to be the newest trend in the travel industry.

Jose Mari Chan Holiday Shopping Tips

As we settle into the -ber months, it’s time to start thinking of your Christmas list. If you’re at a loss as to how to spread joy to your loved ones during the holidays amidst the pandemic, who better to ask for advice than one of the Philippines’ Christmas icons, Jose Mari Chan?

The musician, who has been Shopee’s Christmas ambassador since 2018, shares that the important thing is to imbue the true spirit of Christmas. “This pandemic may have completely changed our shopping habits, but one thing remains the same—every chance you get to show kindness, do so. Whatever you give doesn’t have to be a big amount.”

Begin your holiday shopping now and keep these other tips from Jose Mari Chan in mind:

  • Take advantage of the convenience and accessibility of online shopping

Like plenty of Filipinos, Jose Mari Chan prefers to shop online these days, from gifts to basic necessities and healthcare products. “Instead of taking public transport or driving to a store, you can purchase from Shopee while staying at home.” Aside from enjoying the safety and convenience, he adds that users get to help out other Filipinos. “You’re doing not only yourself a favor. You also continue to support small businesses, manufacturers, and delivery services.”

  • Always check for free shipping and other promos to make shopping more worthwhile

Jose Mari Chan reminds users to keep an eye out for vouchers, especially during Shopee’s big sales. Jose Mari Chan says, “What more can you ask for? I assure you, when you purchase on Shopee, you will always be able to get the best deal.”

  •  Go cashless for safe and convenient transactions

Start opting for contactless payment methods for safe and convenient payments. Use ShopeePay, Shopee’s all-in-one e-wallet, to Buy Load, Pay Bills & Scan to Pay.

For account security, Jose Mari Chan adds, “Change your ShopeePay PIN regularly and do not share it with anyone to prevent unauthorized purchases.”

  • It’s better to plan ahead and organize your Christmas list early on

Jose Mari Chan shares that he and his wife are early birds when it comes to holiday shopping. He advises users to follow this principle and plan ahead. “List down some important people whom you want to cheer up, then browse online to see what items you can give. Do it early. If you leave it up to the last minute, you might make some impulse purchases or even overspend,” he says.

  • Put more heart into picking gifts to make them more meaningful

Feeling stumped about gift ideas? Here’s a piece of advice from Jose Mari Chan: try to come up with gifts that hold meaning for the recipient. “For the past years, my wife and I have been giving each other a common gift that we’d both agree on prior, such as items we need for the home. I would also ask special friends if they have a favorite charity, and I would donate in their name as a gift.”

The musician concludes that as he gets older, he derives more pleasure from giving than receiving. “When you receive, it’s just a moment’s pleasure. When you give, it lasts longer. When you give out of kindness, love, charity, and generosity, the impact will last for many years.”

Enjoy the Christmas festivities with Jose Mari Chan and watch his latest Shopee video via Facebook at https://shp.ee/5kkbwhh or YouTube at https://shp.ee/vtk84wr.

ManilART2021: The National Art Fair– Beyond regional, beyond physical

ManilART is the flagship activity of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)’s Museums and Galleries Month (MGM), celebrated every October. In its thirteenth year, ManilART observes the theme “Continuing Legacies,” resuming its regular programming from October 20-24 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig City.

Continuing traditions

ManilART was established on the backbone of professional galleries representing world-class Filipino artists on the world stage.  Living masters of Philippine art continue to headline the top-caliber roster of the fair. These artists have won both local and international accolades, participated in prestigious programs, exhibited around the globe, and built the monuments we see around us today. They are representative of the degree of excellence of the times and give collectors and enthusiasts the unparalleled opportunity to view and meet in person the works and the masters themselves.

“Symphony in Blue” by Aracelli Dans will be exhibited this year at ManilART 2021.

Araceli Dans. At 94, multi-awarded Dans, whose previous exhibition was at ManilART 2018, returns this year. Mentored by National Artists Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino, she has built a lifelong legacy of works representing the consummate Filipina artist and educator. Best known for her calado embroidery subject, she continues to paint fine and large-scale works coveted by top collectors over the decades.

Ramon Orlina’s “Family United” was seen in ManilART 2020.

Ramon Orlina. Orlina is unparalleled in the field of glass sculpture. Over five decades, he has continued to innovate techniques and push the envelope towards refining the play of light and glass in his pieces as best reviewed at the eponymous Museo Orlina in Tagaytay. This year, his works are brought to a new experiential level as will be unveiled in the first-ever phygital exhibition in the Philippines.

Romulo Galicano. A mainstay of ManilART since its inception, Galicano continues to chronicle contemporary history in his romantic realist style. Recipient of many local and international accolades, most recently a three-peat at the American Art Awards, he brings his award-winning style to render current events in grand, semi-mural scaled works.

Nemiranda. Nemesio Miranda, Jr. is another chronicler of history through many works of private and public art. From his EDSA Shrine murals, People Power monument to the “Way of Mary” stations stretching from Mandaluyong to Antipolo, Nemiranda contributes his narrative to the Quincentennial celebrations in highlighting the 500 years from the Victory of Mactan to present-day heroes in pandemic times.

Balai Kalipay houses large murals by Kublai Millan as well as a collection of works by other artists.

Kublai Millan. Representing indigenous and contemporary art of Mindanawons, monument maker Millan brings a Mindanao perspective to the table. Best-known for public sculptures including the “Durian Genesis Lore” at the Davao Airport, he spearheads Mindanao Art Fair as well as a ManilART satellite exhibit of Balai Kalipay, co-presented with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Sowing for the Future

Legacies are built over time. The younger set today lay the groundwork for their place in our artistic patrimony in the years to come with their consistent excellence and dedication to their craft. Sought-after new generation talents today put their best foot forward in this annual event. These include Francis Nacion, Jonathan Dangue, Melissa Yeung Yap, Wencyl Mallari, Kenneth Montegrande, and Katrina Cuenca, among scores of others.

Extending reach off-site

In past years, like the National Art Fair, aside from physically bringing exhibits to the main fair proper, ManilART has brought art caravans throughout the three island groups. As world events unfolded, this caravan has been innovated to take the form of online virtual exhibitions. While physically set up in situ, 360-degree walkthroughs on ManilART’s portal brings audiences virtually to visit the shows simultaneously happening “Off-site” during the fair. This brings art straight to the homes and screens of audiences while remaining bound in its context and place. Synchronously with the “On-site” fair, the portal brings together a shared experience in the celebration of art and a one-stop-shop for the online visitor to virtually experience art “under one roof.” This year, six satellite shows are offered located in different cities in Luzon and Mindanao.

Entrance of Balai Kalipay in Davao.

Balai Kalipay. Balai Kalipay is located in the mountainous Malagos area of Davao City. It was built and spearheaded by renowned Mindanawon sculptor Kublai Millan, whose works and advocacies have been prominently featured in ManilART. Its name translates to “House of Joy,” and its vision is to chronicle both indigenous and contemporary Mindanao art. This is jointly undertaken by ManilART and the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Cultural Diplomacy Unit.

Likhang Silangan. Rizal has also garnered a name for itself in the art scene as the Cradle of Philippine Art, with its municipality of Angono named the Arts Capital of the Philippines. As such, “Likhang Silangan: The Art EASTory of Rizal,” shall be held from October 10 to 23 at Angkla Art Gallery in Angono. There is already a decorated list of local visual art legends such as the late National Artists Carlos “Botong” Francisco, and Vicente Manansala, as well as 19th-century artist Juan “Tandang Juancho” Senson.

Tarlac Art. The Heart of Luzon shall forge its own legacy in the realm of arts and culture. “Tarlac Art ” will run from October 1 to 22 at Diwa ng Tarlac. This is to be the first visual arts exhibit exclusively showcasing artists from Tarlac. This is a collaborative effort between ManilART and Tarlac’s Provincial Government.

Casa Carlitos. Philippine sculpture lost one of its most unique and pre-eminent living greats with the sudden passing of Carlitos Ortega. The museum cafe preserves some of his works in brass sculpture and design and will be inaugurated as a satellite exhibit and tribute.

Beyond physical borders – Introducing the Phygital

With the advent of the digital stage, ManilART opened its online portal last year to bring audiences to a better experience of the Fair via 360-degree virtual walkthroughs. But a virtual peek is only the beginning of the journey, soon art will be ushered to a truly digital age with the introduction of virtual galleries and collections where art in digital format will exist alongside physical art. The time will come when entire virtual museums can be uploaded to the cloud and transported globally and beyond.

ManilART2021 debuts its first “phygital” exhibitor. G9 ONline will mount a phygital show which will showcase a digital work as an NFT, alongside the physical original as painting or sculpture. The Non-fungible Token (NFT) is a digitally encrypted rendition of an original work that can be considered a “digital print or multiple” based on a physical artwork. The NFT is viewable and displayable in a virtual gallery and can be traded on the crypto market similar to crypto art. Its non-fungible character means that the digital rendition is original and does not simply capture or grab an image online. It has a traceable provenance and may be considered an enhancement on the physical piece.

For the initial collection, limited edition proofs will be released of the works of Ramon Orlina, Ed Coronel, Bell Sison, Isobel Francisco, among others.

“Diversity” by Ed Coronel will have an accompanying Non-fungible Token (NFT).

Philippine Quincentennial

ManilART joins in the quincentennial commemorations through activities and exhibits co-presented at the NQC-ManilART Lounge with the National Quincentennial Committee and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

ManilART2021 is co-presented with the Bonafide Art Galleries Organization (BAGO), ManilART Foundation, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as a Museums and Galleries Month presentation. It is supported by partners I Love Taguig, Think Big Taguig, Vision Prime Media, Future Studios, Ladder Events Production, Ticketbooth.ph, Metro Channel, Metro.Style, ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), SMNI News Channel, DZAR Sonshine Radio 1026, People’s Journal, BusinessWorld, Alike Media Inc., FrontpagePH, asian Dragon, Click The City, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin, Art+ Magazine, Inquirer.net, Inquirer POP! Home Base Plus, The Market Monitor, Hue TVEverywhere, Chinese Journal Today, Experience Travel and Living Magazine, Manileño, WhenInManila.com, Good Morning Kuya (GMK), The Manila Times, Wish 107.5, Boracay Beach Radio 97.3, Q Radio 105.1, and Don Papa Rum.

ManilART will run from October 13-17 at the third level of the SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig City. For more details, visit www.manilart.com or follow ManilART’s social media pages on Facebook and Instagram (@manilartfair).

#GandaMoPinas Campaign as local borders reopen

With the easing of restrictions for leisure travel, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and video-making and sharing app TikTok have collaborated once again for a campaign that celebrates the beauty of the country’s islands through #GandaMoPinas.

DOT’s previous collaboration with TikTok, the #SarapMagingPinoy challenge in-app garnered over 700 video entries with over 70M video views, and its main video on Facebook has garnered over 13M views.

“The DOT is using all channels to promote our reopened tourist destinations and this collaboration with TikTok is one way of enticing people to travel locally while reiterating the importance of following the minimum health and safety protocols when traveling,” said Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat.

The joint DOT and TikTok campaign will feature the beauty of the Philippines through live video sessions with nine content creators from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The campaign will feature one content creator every day, until September 30. He/she will do a live TikTok session to highlight the beauty of his/her region, or province through various tourism products, such as natural landscape, tourist spots, local cuisine, activities, and local products. They should showcase why #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines and how visitors would appreciate #GandaMoPilipinas through their province or region.

The three content creators with the highest number of views during the live show will be recognized as TikTok Funfluencers—one from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Winners will be officially announced on October 4, 2021.

For more updates on the campaign, please follow the DOT’s official TikTok page @TourismPhilippines and visit https://bit.ly/3nzwqnj.

How to look like a beauty queen

The ageless Gloria Diaz tells us her beauty regimen to maintain that Miss Universe look. She believes in the old adage that “you are as old as you look and feel, you are the age you are.”

Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz has retained that Miss Universe look after all these years. She conducts herself with flair and elan.

Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, who appeared as a guest star on Netflix’s hit series “Insatiable” and portrayed a character based on herself, has retained that Miss Universe look after all these years. Photo courtesy of Netflix.

Gloria believes in the old adage that “you are as old as you look and feel, you are the age you are.” What keeps her radiant is maintaining a lifestyle of moderation, meaning, not too much alcohol, not too much late night-outs, and adhering to the saying, “early to bed, early to rise.”

Just like other figure-conscious women, she stays fit by engaging in constant exercise and watching her diet. Every day she goes to the gym to flex some muscles and from time to time undergo a massage treatment to lessen the pain and stiffness of her body.

She doesn’t really follow any special diet, although she chooses to eat more fruits and vegetables. “Quite often, I also eat junk foods,” she admitted from the previous interview. She takes care of her hair by using fewer chemicals like hair spray and other similar stuff.

One of her stunning assets is her almost flawless skin. She scrubs her body with a loofah (a rough sponge) and sometimes had it done in the parlor. Then she applies lotion to her skin. But most importantly, she says, is to take lots of vitamins and calcium.

For her face, she makes sure that it’s clean before she goes to bed. “I only use heavy makeup when I’m shooting or taping. You can’t help that. Otherwise, I just apply a little bit of eye makeup and lipstick,” she tells.

“It was worth a try,” she says of her experience in winning a Miss Universe title. “You must enter into it with an open mind that it’s not the be-all and end-all if you win or not win. Life goes on, and there can only be one winner. Fortunately, I came out on top.”

Developing Young Tech Talents is Crucial to Support the Growth of E-Commerce

E-commerce continues to play a significantly important role in the Philippine market and is estimated to be worth US$12 billion by 2025.[1] As more consumers turn to e-commerce, and as more businesses capitalize on the potential of the emerging digital economy, there is also a rising demand for qualified tech talents. According to Linkedin, tech roles make up the majority of “emerging jobs” in the region, with robotics engineer, cyber security specialist, and javascript developer roles making the job trend list.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, prepares and nurtures students and professionals for the digital landscape through its various talent development initiatives. One of these is the Shopee Apprentice Program which is an internship program designed to develop young tech talents into leaders through high-impact projects, specialized learning and development training, and mentorships led by Shopee leaders.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “As the demand for tech roles rises, Shopee will continue to train and equip the next generation of leaders through initiatives like the Shopee Apprentice Program. We will ramp up our efforts to provide proper mentorship and a well-rounded work experience for individuals joining our internship program.”

These Participants of the Shopee Apprentice Program highlight how they gained significant professional and personal growth to jumpstart their careers in e-commerce.

For Kyla, the Shopee Apprentice Program was an enriching experience. With a specialization in data science and analytics and equipped with advanced coding skills, she created end-to-end training portals during her stint with the Shopee Business Intelligence Team. “Even though the entire program was held virtually, Shopee translated their work culture online which is a great factor in my whole experience as an apprentice. I learned a lot from my mentors and also improved my skills in terms of presentation, time management, and communication. The program encouraged me to step up and be more confident to drive better results with what I do. I am glad a lot of people supported me throughout my whole Shopee journey,” Kyla shared.

Lance, another Shopee Apprentice Program participant, said that his experience was eye-opening, improved his problem-solving skills, and helped him understand the industry better. He worked with the People Team and displayed exemplary standing not only when it comes to his studies but also with his work at Shopee. “With Shopee, I learned how to look at a multifaceted problem, break it down into its constituent parts, and build it back together to form a comprehensive, results-driven strategy. With this mindset, I was able to drive concrete impact by implementing workable solutions that will help drive the business forward.”

After finishing the program, Kyla highly recommends other individuals check out the program for growth and new learnings. “For those who want a career in e-commerce and tech, the Shopee Apprentice Program can definitely equip you with the necessary skills through their mentorships, training, and projects. You can definitely drive your own growth as well as bring value and positive impact to Shopee through this internship. If you are up for a challenge to do meaningful work, the Shopee Apprentice Program might just be for you,” Kyla shared.

Making healthcare accessible with digital technology

HealthNow, a joint venture of Globe’s 917 Ventures and AC Health, is featured as the healthcare support and companion of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID’s) “It’s OK to Delay” campaign.

The campaign is backed by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM). It aims to enable young adults to make informed health choices to create a better future.

For HealthNow, the partnership is a step forward in promoting good health and well-being among young adults and enabling them to make sound decisions about their bodies through digital technology.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with USAID in providing a convenient way for young adults to get accessible healthcare services through the enabling power of technology so they can have the freedom and flexibility to live their lives in the best way possible,” said Beia Latay, HealthNow Chief Executive Officer.

Michelle Lang-Alli, Office of Health Director at the USAID-Philippines, said: “We’ve heard from young women that they are eager to make responsible health choices, but many of them don’t know where to get the information on how to start. That’s why we’re excited about this partnership between USAID and HealthNow. We fully support the use of digital technology to make health services and commodities more accessible to all Filipinos.”

HealthNow is currently offering discounts on video teleconsultation where fans and followers of the It’s OK to Delay campaign can get advice from doctors and even have medicines and other pharmaceutical items delivered to their doorstep. The promo is ongoing until September 30.

HealthNow brings health and care to every Filipino in a tap. It gives users convenient access to healthcare providers for teleconsultation, medicine deliveries, and, soon, home-service diagnostics through its easy-to-use app.

USAID has been the Philippines’ partner in sustainable and inclusive development for the past 60 years. In 2018, it launched the ReachHealth project to strengthen and improve access to critical health services for Filipino families by reducing the unmet need for reproductive health services across 11 regions in the Philippines. The project works to reach disadvantaged women, adolescents, and traditionally underserved populations with these services.

The Globe Group strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 3, on providing good health and well-being, and SDG No. 9 which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs.
