Gary Granada: “Writing songs is a serious business”

“I want to be a relevant piece of history,” shared the award-winning composer.

Composer Gary Granada experienced a moment of celebrity status when his composition with witty lyrics “Mabuti Pa Sila,” grabbed the grand prize award in the 1998 Metropop Song Festival. What the audience didn’t know was that the song actually started from a joke.

“Noong araw mayroon kaming joke na ganoon,” related Gary from a previous interview. “So sabi ko bakit hindi ko ma-share ang joke na ‘yon pero sa ibang form naman.” The song he said has a no deeper meaning. “Katuwaan lang ‘yun,” he quipped.

Gary, however, said his work as a composer is no joking matter. “Among the current composers, I think, I work the hardest. My setup is not simple. I spend about 12 to 14 hours a day working – that is serious work. Kasi napapakinggan ko ang mga trabaho ng mga kasama sa industry usually their songs are very personal. They write about their own experiences and their feelings toward certain situations which are not bad at all. In my case, I get to write things which I don’t have an intimate involvement with.”

The award-winning song “Mabuti Pa Sila,” was written in 1997 by Gary and was intended as a single for an album. As it turned out, it qualified in the Metropop.

However, he considered “Mabuti Pa Sila,” as a serious piece of work. “Seryoso naman ang song na ito in a literary sense of the word. Papasa sa classroom at papatulan ng literary teacher ito. In that sense, the material is serious.”

Gary shared that his music tradition originated from protest music. “Ang mga kasama ko diyan ay ang Buklod, Patatag, Jess Santiago, The Jerks, Musicians for Peace, Inang Laya, Paul Galang,” to name some. However, he admitted that they had lost focus because many of his groups disbanded or went on to work for NGO groups.

He felt that it was about time to consider a larger audience because he thought that they were effective. “Ang effectiveness mo naman ay kung nakakapagbago ka ng public policy,” he said.

Before he became active in the mainstream, he was very reluctant to go into pop music. “Kasi pakiramdam ko naman kahit na sumikat ka riyan, kahit maging pinakamagaling ka pa riyan, hindi ka naman makakapagpababa ng presyo ng langis,” he pointed out.

Gary added: “The way we look at pop music industry decoration lang ang mga ‘yon, a piece of entertainment. You’re earning but you don’t have any political consciousness, so you’re an irrelevant piece of history. That’s why we focus our attention to more historically relevant work.”

Diversity of musical styles

Gary is a native of Maco, Davao. He first learned to play the ukulele at the age of three. As he grew older he learned to harmonize different music styles and genres from “Pinoy ethnic” to “rock ‘n roll.”

Gary was a finalist in the 1982 Metro Manila Popular Song Festival with his entry “Ang Aking Kubo.” He eventually won the Grand Prize for “Salamat Musika,” in the 1984 Metropop and “Bahay” in the 1988 KBP Musicfest. He also won in the 1989 United Nations Environmental Program Songwriting Contest for his song “Earthkeeper.”

A testament to his diversity is his ability to compose songs haunting the consciousness such as “Sino Ka Ba Jose Rizal?” while on the other hand, dishing out light-hearted tunes such as “Pag Nananalo/Natatalo/Nang Maging Champion ang Ginebra.” (The other version of the song “Ginebra” was sung by another singer Bayang Barrios.)

“I did put in a lot of work in the song ‘Ginebra.’ The challenge was to capture a national passion in four minutes,” said Gary.

Gary’s songwriting experience goes about several years back. He has produced numerous albums for major record labels and has had written more than 300 songs on subjects ranging from gospel, love, environmental concerns, folk, to political and satirical. In addition, he has also composed full orchestra pieces.

Gary disclosed that he wants to be a “relevant piece of history.”

Sharing here the lyrics of  the award-winning song “Mabuti Pa Sila”:

  • Mabuti pa ang mga surol

Laging mayroong masisiksikan

Mabuti pa ang bubble gum

Laging mayrong didikitan

Mabuti pa ang salamin

Laging mayrong tumitingin

Di tulad kong laging walang pumapansin

  • Mabuti pa ang mga lapis

Sinusulatan ang papel

At mas mapalad ang kamatis

Maya’t maya napipisil

Napakaswerte ng bayong

Hawak ng aleng maganda

Di tulad kong lagi na lang nag-iisa

  • Ano bang wala ako na mayron sila

Di man lang makaisa

Habang iba dala-dalawa

Pigilan n’yo akong magpatiwakal

Mabuti pa ang galunggong

Nasasabihan ng “mahal”

  • Kahit ang sukay ay may toyo

At ang asin may paminta

Mabuti pa ang lumang dyaryo

At yakap-yakap ang isda

Mabuti pa sila, mabuti pa sila

Di tulad kong lagi na lang nag-iisa

  • Mabuti pa ang simpleng tissue

At laging nababalikan

Mabuti pa ang mga bisyo

Umaasang babalikan

Mabuti pa sila, mabuti pa sila

Di tulad kong laging nag-iisa

(Interlude)

  • Pigilan n’yo akong magpatiwakal

Bakit si Gabby Concepcion

Lagi na lang kinakasal

  • Mabuti pa ang snatcher

Palaging may naghahabol

Ang aking luma na computer

Mayron pa ring compatible

Mabuti pa sila, mabuti pa sila

Di tulad kong lagi na lang nag-iisa.

Oshom Bali: Nuanu Creative City’s First and Only Luxury Boutique Hotel is Now Open

Oshom Bali, an intentionally designed boutique hotel nestled within the visionary Nuanu Creative City, has officially opened its doors. Located on Bali’s pristine Pantai Nyanyi’s black sand beach in Tabanan regency, Oshom is a creative sanctuary for the modern traveller; here, hospitality is given a sophisticated, cheeky twist.

“Oshom is a future-forward arts-meets-hospitality concept that offers a barefoot luxury vibe, while creating space for effortless creativity, mindfulness, and sparkly moments,” says Daisy Angus, Visionary Founder & Creator of Oshom. “We’ve created a holistic lifestyle resort for the soul. With expansive horizons, guests can completely unwind and relax in moments of curated indulgence and beauty; Oshom is a space where meaningful connections are found and remembered.”

Where Design Meets Nature: A Harmonising Sanctuary

Oshom’s design mirrors its wabi-sabi philosophy – perfection in imperfection – balancing raw natural beauty with refined elegance.

Designed with locally rooted craftsmanship in mind, every detail reflects Bali’s artistic heritage. Hand-drawn furniture, reclaimed teakwood, and volcanic sand walls create a rich, textured aesthetic, while bamboo “nests” by architect Pablo Luna provide sculptural spaces for quiet retreat. Bespoke artwork from emerging and established Balinese artists transforms the interiors into a living gallery; walk-in wardrobes adorned with shining disco balls add a dash of joy.

Expansive Ocean Views from the Ocean Suite at Oshom Bali.

Breathable, non-toxic materials, rewilded native flora, and elevated walkways are part of Oshom’s responsible approach to preserving the delicate surrounding ecosystem. The saltwater pool, lined with local Sukabumi stone, matches the handmade lava tiles decorating the pool bar, mirroring the soft, shifting aqua hues of the ocean.

Immersive Stays: Ocean Suites & Treehouse Hideaways

The 18-key retreat enjoys direct beach access, with 11 Ocean Suites and 7 secluded Treehouse Hideaways. The former are overlooking the Indian Ocean, whilst the Treehouse Hideaways are nestled within the property’s vibrant mangrove forest on the river, offering a true retreat into nature.

The Indigo Dreams Suite is designed for ultimate indulgence, featuring a private jacuzzi, a dedicated alfresco massage room for two, and a spa-inspired bathroom.

Oshom Bali – Ocean Suite.

Aptly named, The Artist’s Suite is – much like the rest of the property – a canvas for some of the island’s notable and emerging artistic talents. Adding to the hedonistic flair of the Suite are an indoor-outdoor bar, private meditation dome, and tropical outdoor shower.

Sunset Restaurant-Lounge: A Culinary & Social Haven

At the heart of Oshom lies its 65-seat cliffside restaurant-lounge; this communal space is one where strangers become friends and memories are created as the sun melts into the horizon.

A Gateway to Nuanu

Oshom offers a dynamic calendar of curated experiences and scintillating events that redefine traditional hospitality. Engaging supper clubs, poolside lectures, and sunset DJ sessions set the stage for meaningful encounters, while wellness rituals—including sound healing, breathwork, and the occasional cacao ceremony—offer moments of deep restoration and balance. The Library is a 24-hour nook designed for cozy reading, peaceful conversations, a glass of wine, and co-working (if needed!).

Located within Nuanu, Oshom is part of a visionary 44-hectare creative city dedicated to art, culture, and conscious living. Guests have access to a world of transformative experiences, from the relaxing Lumiere Wellness Complex to Luna Beach Club, and Bali’s first multimedia park.

Just beyond Nuanu, Oshom’s prime location allows for effortless exploration of Bali’s cultural and natural wonders, from the sacred Tanah Lot temple (10 minutes) to the vibrant dining and shopping scenes of Pererenan and Canggu (15-20 minutes), and Ubud (50 minutes).

Opening Offer

Oshom Bali is now welcoming reservations for its full range of accommodations, dining experiences, and immersive programming. To celebrate the grand opening, guests can enjoy an exclusive package, designed to showcase the essence of Oshom: Daily a la carte breakfast, daily afternoon tea service from 4-5 PM at the oceanfront restaurant, a signature sunset cocktail per guest, perfectly timed to toast the day’s end against the backdrop of Bali’s unrivaled sunsets, daily wellness and cultural experiences at Oshom,  a guided Nuanu Creative City Tour revealing the architectural and artistic highlights of this visionary development, and unlimited access to the iconic Luna Beach Club throughout the stay

Mercato Centrale Group, the country’s premier food and lifestyle market, has partnered with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) to roll out  micro-certification courses aimed at strengthening micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the food industry.

The program will offer short courses covering food business management, marketing strategies, financial literacy, and culinary innovation. Hapag Movement meets target one year early, helps over 120,000 families facing involuntary hunger

The Hapag Movement, Globe’s hunger alleviation program, has reached its impact goal one year ahead of schedule, supporting over 120,000 Filipino families through the collective support of Globe and TM customers, corporate donors, and mobilization partners.

Originally targeting 100,000 families by the end of 2025, the initiative raised Php 25.37 million in 2024 alone, bringing total funds raised to Php 53 million since 2022 and enabling it to provide meals to 120,455 families facing food insecurity.

“The overwhelming support for the Hapag Movement reflects the dedication of individuals, businesses, and organizations that share our vision of addressing involuntary hunger in the Philippines. Reaching this milestone sooner than expected strengthens our resolve to expand our efforts and create lasting change,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe.

Since its launch, the Hapag Movement has worked with the Ayala Foundation, Scholars of Sustenance, Tzu Chi Foundation, and World Vision. In 2024, it brought in three new mobilization partners—Rise Against Hunger and international organizations UN World Food Programme and Project PEARLS. This aimed to draw international attention to persistent hunger incidence in the Philippines, allowing the Hapag Movement to reach more communities in need.

The Hapag Movement has received support from over 1.1 million Globe and TM subscribers, who donated Php 11.67 million in Rewards points through the GlobeOne app.  Total contributions to the program have accounted for 23% of all assistance provided through the platform.

In addition, 1,871 Globe employees took part in various Hapag Movement activities in 2024, demonstrating their commitment to making a difference.

To grow its impact, the Hapag Movement launched innovative fundraisers like the “Ibalik ang Sarap ng Pasko” holiday drive with SM’s shopper loyalty program SMAC, integrating donations into holiday shopping, and the Gourmet Giving Series, featuring fine dining fundraiser events with 12 top Metro Manila restaurants in partnership with Facebook community Fine Dining Club Philippines.

The Hapag Movement also tapped into the power of fandoms, enlisting support from Blackpink and BTS fan communities, Electronic Sports Gaming Summit gamers, ToyCon collectors, Lyropera enthusiasts, and Kwentoon artists to encourage contributions.

The program also gained invaluable support from the Rotary Club of Makati Business District, BPI Foundation, and Kumu, among others.

With its initial target surpassed, the Hapag Movement is now focused on scaling its livelihood training programs nationwide to provide families with sustainable means of supporting themselves.

The initiative is also exploring ways to contribute to the fight against child stunting, ensuring that Filipino children receive the proper nutrition they need in their critical early years.

The Hapag Movement remains committed to addressing hunger and poverty in the Philippines. Supporters can continue contributing through the GlobeOne app and GCash to help sustain and expand its impact.

Commemorating maternal love through paintings as featured on the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art

As the ‘ilaw ng tahanan’, mothers and nurturers are the heart and foundation of Filipino families. Being a mother is all about the deep commitment to nurturing, protecting, and guiding another life.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, grace, and quiet resilience of mothers and women through the vibrant world of Philippine visual arts.

From the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Arts (CCP EPA), here are some Filipino artworks that immortalized on canvas the importance of women as a mother figure:

CHILDBIRTH

Childbirth by visual artist Romeo Tabuena is an unusual genre of work that captures the folk quality in situation and settings. The painting centers on the mythological being of the underworld, and a woman in the agony of parturition. As the woman felt the tension to release the baby in her womb, her heaving stomach was massaged by a manghihilot (midwife) while surrounded by an aswang (a mythological creature in Philippine folklore) waiting for the newborn baby.

To accentuate the emotional intensity and glimmer movement over the work’s surface, the artist used dramatic lighting. The artwork showcases the artist’s frontal figurative skills.

TATLONG BUDDHANG INA

Agnes Arellano’s Tatlong Buddhang Ina of Agnes Arellano portrays a deity of roads from Yoruba religion.

Exhibited at the 6th Havana Biennale in 1997, accompanied by her work Eshu, the painting features deities Dea, Vesta, and Lola; each representing stages of motherhood.

Dea reflects Arellano’s struggles in giving birth through caesarean, her transition into motherhood, and as a stepmother. She comes to be molting an old version of herself, equipped with wings and four pairs of breasts.

Carrying a large lizard as an emblem of fertility, Vesta provides milk and honey as nourishment, symbolizing breastfeeding. Freed from reproductive and sexual responsibilities through aging, Lola gains a love lost through intellectual fulfillment by turning inward.

BROWN MADONNA

Galo Ocampo’s Brown Madonna is a pre-war modernist work departing from a traditional colonial iconography and giving a Caucasian cast to the figures.

Brown Madonna

Set in a background of rural scene with thatched hut, tropical bamboo, and evocative mountains of rice terraces, the painting represents rural Filipino through the baro’t saya and tapis of Mary, along with brown complexion and features.

Ocampo’s modernist style is shown by his use of bright colors, flat decorative effects, spatial recession as depth, and the absence of linear perspective.

Ocampo’s work came from the idea of Paul Gauguin’s 1891 Tahitian work La Orana Maria, which had themes of nationalism and indigenization.

CHICKENS

Modernist pioneer Anita Magsaysay-Ho’s Chickens is part of a series depicting women harvesting fruits and grains, and vending fish in the market. Created in the late 1960s, it emphasized movement and busy interactions by using bold and dynamic brushstrokes, strong contrast of shadows, and lights. Magsaysay-Ho’s style presents the simplification of forms into basic geometric shapes, like bandanas as triangles and rectangles for skirts.

Though her composition is closed and spherical, there is a function among the figures with chickens waving, flying, cackling, and rustling feathers caused by the women chasing them. Their bodies twist and turn in contrast. For the painting’s vibrancy, the textured surface treatment was achieved by sharp hatching and cross-hatching brushes on the hardboard.

THE QUIASON FAMILY 1880

In this group portrait of an ilustrado in the 19th century, artist Simon Flores depicted a family that consists of two children, a father with  dark-toned trousers and a mother wearing a dark skirt, which contradict their light colored upper clothing. The mother and her children have formal, unsmiling expressions that convey a high moral tone as models to be emulated.

Painted in full figure, the artist meticulously catches all details of embroidery, textures of their outfits, and their accessories in a miniaturist way. Also present in the portrait is a vase of flowers that symbolize beauty and abundance. The round chandeliers and open doors give an impression of a stylish interior, and the curtains on the left side and an elegant column at the right well match the composition.
