Ceramics and Puni Art Unite at Ascott Makati’s Celebration of Filipino Craftsmanship

For years, Ascott Makati has stood as a landmark in the heart of Makati City, earning recognition as a trusted 5-star hotel and luxury serviced apartment. While delivering warm Filipino hospitality and world-class service has always been its foremost commitment, Ascott Makati has, in recent years, taken meaningful steps to champion initiatives that celebrate, preserve, and uplift the country’s rich culture and heritage. Its latest project, Likha: Ceramics and Puni, is a month-long exhibit that showcases two proudly Filipino forms of craftsmanship.

Art connoisseurs are no strangers to the ultra-talented husband-and-wife team, Jon and Tessy Pettyjohn. Long recognized as pioneers of contemporary Philippine ceramics, the Pettyjohn’s first fell in love with the craft in the 1970s, drawn to the endless possibilities of molding and shaping clay. Their passion for ceramics deepened when they naturally began sharing their knowledge with others. Though initially hesitant to take on the role of teachers, their willingness to mentor soon led to the growth of a thriving community of ceramic artists in the Philippines. To this day, the Pettyjohns continue to welcome students and visitors to the must-visit Pettyjohn Pottery in Laguna.

For Likha, the Pettyjohns are showcasing pieces from their personal collection, created over the past 10 years, that hold special meaning for them. Many of these works have a sculptural quality while still maintaining their functionality — a signature of the Pettyjohns, who are well known for their useable art. When asked to further describe his work, Jon shared, “Our goal is to bridge art and function, to blur the line between. Flower arranging vessels are perfect for this kind of experimentation.”

Among the highlights of the exhibit is Tessy’s ‘Star Trek’, so named because its shape resembles the iconic Federation logo — a challenging form she constructed in porcelain. Jon, meanwhile, presents his ‘Anagama Dance’ series, created through a three-day firing process that produces a subtle, natural ash glaze effect — quite literally painted by fire.

Puni, on the other hand, is a Tagalog or Filipino word which means to decorate or beautify. For Ascott Makati’s Likha exhibit, it refers to the traditional art of weaving, folding or braiding leaves which is only formally taught in Malolos, Bulacan. Inspired by the beauty of Palaspas and the rich tradition of Palm Sunday, Ascott Makati turned to two of Bulacan’s champions of Puni art— Punique Handicrafts and Puni de Malolos.

Punique Handicrafts is a social enterprise founded by Jonnah Garcia, whose mission is to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities and empower female weavers in her hometown of Bulacan through the creative revival of Puni art. While her advocacy is admirable in itself, what makes it truly stand out is her innovative approach to reviving this traditional craft and transforming it into contemporary, functional art.

Once limited to Palaspas, food containers, and toys, Puni has been reimagined by Punique Handicrafts into fashion accessories, bridal bouquets, and home décor. The brand has also expanded its reach beyond the Philippines, with products now available in Canada and Hong Kong.

At Ascott Makati’s Likha exhibit, Punique Handicrafts artfully complements the ceramic creations of Jon and Tessy Pettyjohn with their own intricate, handcrafted Puni pieces. Their detailed handwoven components are inspired by what is seen in nature. Punique will showcase handmade flowers such as roses, dandelions and lilies together with leaf and bead accents known as their interpretation of the pabo real, tigbi, butil and the famous banig or mat. These elements will be turned into one-of-a-kind masterpieces by their Senior Designer Mr. Henry De Guzman.

Ascott Makati goes beyond simply mounting an exhibit. This marks the introduction of a new brand touchpoint for the hotel — with the aim of making Puni art more visible within the property and giving guests the opportunity to learn about this beautiful Filipino tradition. This initiative was made possible through a collaboration with Puni de Malolos, represented by Tourism Officer Marichelle Bernardo, who conducted a training session for the hotel’s Housekeeping team.

Puni de Malolos is a well-known champion of palm weaving in Bulacan. Under Bernardo’s leadership, the group has been actively teaching the art of Puni to inmates, students, and individuals of all ages across the country.

Ascott Makati’s Likha: Ceramics and Puni officially opened on May 29 with an intimate cocktail gathering attended by hotel guests, corporate clients, and friends from the media. Welcoming everyone to the occasion was Cluster General Manager Cecille Teodoro, who reaffirmed Ascott Makati’s commitment to advocating for Filipino arts and heritage. Guests were among the first to witness the beautiful fusion of Ceramics and Puni, meet the artisans behind the works, and even try their hand at Puni weaving.

Likha: Ceramics and Puni will be on display until June 29, 2025, at Ascott Makati’s hotel lobby. Select ceramic pieces by Jon and Tessy Pettyjohn, as well as floral bouquets by Punique Handicrafts, will also be available for purchase.

Miriam Quiambao’s Triumphs in Life

A deeply religious person, Miriam agreed to join the Bb. Pilipinas contests to fulfill what she calls “her mission to live for others while at the same time becoming a living witness of God’s gift of life.” She hopes to inspire others by helping them know God.

She was named the second most beautiful woman or first runner-up in the 1999 Miss Universe Pageant—former Bb. Pilipinas-World Miriam Redito Quiambao stood up with courage and poise after an embarrassing fall during the contest held on the Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago. The grace she showed under adversity and heavy pressure won her tremendous sympathy.

Although the Miss Universe crown eventually went to the very articulate Miss Botswana Mpule Kwelagobe, an engineering student, she was the clear favorite at the pageant. Still, Quiambao scored the highest finish by a Philippine candidate at the prestigious pageant.

“I was just the symbol and the real winner is the Filipino people,” said Miriam during a previous exclusive interview. Miriam is a physical therapy graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas. She is the first child of Mr. and Mrs. Medardo and Magdalena Quiambao.

A deeply religious person, Miriam said she agreed to join the Bb. Pilipinas contests to fulfill what she calls “her mission to live for others while at the same time becoming a living witness of God’s gift of life.”

Final Answer

Miriam has already changed her mind about the answer to the final question that was asked during the Miss Universe competition. She answered yes to the question, “Should a Miss Universe be allowed to continue her reign if she became pregnant?”

Her reflections: “Some said that the final question was unfair to me and Ms. Spain because we both came from Catholic countries,” she said. “The issue of pregnancy is a moral issue between us. But at that time I was sure that I gave the best answer. I tried not to be judgmental about the whole thing. I was hoping that it would get me somewhere and I did emerge as first runner-up.

If she were to answer now that question, she would say, “The birth of a child is the most important thing in this world, and if ever the Miss Universe would get pregnant during her reign, she should resign and focus more on bringing the child into this world, and taking care of that child and herself.”

Inspiring Others

Has she changed? “Perhaps the change in me is that I’m more equipped to combat whatever adversities or problems I may undergo in life. So far, that’s one thing I know has changed in me for the better,” shared the beauty pageant titleholder, inspirational speaker, author, actress/host, model, and entrepreneur.

Miriam is passionate about igniting a spark in others, guiding them on a journey to discover and deepen their relationship with God. She believes that by sharing her own experiences and insights, she can inspire others to embrace faith and find purpose in their lives. Miriam hopes to inspire others by helping them know God.

Gazing at her in this moment, Miriam embodies the essence of a truly fulfilled woman. She radiates warmth and devotion as a loving wife to her husband, Ardy Roberto, and a nurturing mother to her two delightful children, Joshua and Elijah. The joy in her heart is evident, making her an inspiring figure of grace and happiness in her family’s life.

CCP Thirteen Artists Awardee Liv Vinluan wanders through art with a fondness for history

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Thirteen Artists Awards (TAA) 2024 recipient, Liv Vinluan, didn’t always see art as a viable career path when growing up. Although art has always been present in her life, she always wondered if she held the same courage as her father, abstractionist Nestor Olarte Vinluan, who received the same honor in 1974. “I saw how difficult it was for him [as a full-time artist and an educator], being a sole breadwinner with three children,” Vinluan shares.

Mounting show after show, Vinluan embraced her fondness for historical narratives. She then fed her fascination through art. Eventually, she realized she might have been onto something all along and heeded the universe’s proverbial call for artmaking. “As a child, I created to pass the time, escape, and conjure other worlds. I just simultaneously feel all these sentiments toward history – bewilderment, shame, and pride,” the 37-year-old artist continues.

Wandering through the path of mixed media techniques, Vinluan found art to be a continuous cycle of discovery. Despite the constant doubts of living a full-time creative life, she refuses to change the trajectory of her career. “Decisiveness is my strongest trait. I try not to entertain regrets,” says Vinluan.

Putting her works out in public remains a tough challenge for Vinluan even after 16 years of practice. Initially, she thought her work could speak for itself as she hid behind anonymity. “Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be enough anymore,” she observes as an artist in the digital age.

Vinluan had won numerous local and international awards. She was chosen as the recipient of The Karen H. Montinola Selection grant for Art Fair Philippines 2019. She was also shortlisted for the Ateneo Art Awards – Fernando Zóbel Prize for Visual Art 2016.

Following the announcement of TAA recipients last December, Vinluan noted it as a humbling experience. “It was neither a goal nor a dream. You just work hard and go forward, hoping you will get somewhere,” she comments.

Finding inspiration from local Flora

Contemplating her presentation at the TAA exhibit at the National Museum of the Philippines Fine Arts this October 2025, Vinluan recounted seeing botanist Fr. Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas at the Lopéz Museum & Library archives in 2016 as part of her preparation. The seminal 19th-century book on Philippine botany has been a landmark, describing over 1,000 Philippine plant species with plates or laminas illustrated by Filipino and Spanish artists.

Upon learning that the exhibit would be inside a historical landmark that witnessed the restoration of the Filipino identity, Vinluan couldn’t contain her excitement. “You don’t get to exhibit at the National Museum everyday. It is a concrete testament to survival and constant change,” she elaborates.

The CCP, through the TAA, honors visual artists under the age of 40 who seek to “restructure, restrengthen, and renew artmaking and art thinking that lend viability to Philippine art.” In its 54th year, Liv Vinluan joins fellow TAA recipients Catalina Africa, Denver Garza, Russ Ligtas, Ella Mendoza, Henrielle Baltazar Pagkaliwangan, Issay Rodriguez, Luis Antonio Santos, Joshua Serafin, Jel Suarez, Tekla Tamoria, Derek Tumala, and Vien Valencia.

The CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division (CCP VAMD) received 82 submissions from art groups, museum and gallery directors and curators, art critics, art educators, and former TAA recipients from all over the country. Through a meticulous deliberation process, the thirteen awardees were selected out of a total of 108 nominations.

For more information about the CCP Thirteen Artists Awards, visit www.thirteenartists.culturalcenter.gov.ph and the CCP official website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph). You may also follow the official CCP and CCP VAMD social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for updates on future events and public programs.

From iTunes PH to PBB to TikTok, David Licauco’s ‘I Think I Love You’ Makes an Impression

There is no stopping David Licauco. Apart from being a popular actor, in-demand endorser, and successful entrepreneur, he is now also a recording artist signed under Universal Records, who just released the song “I Think I Love You.”

Written by Luke April Isnani and Ivo Impreso, “I Think I Love You” is a catchy and upbeat song about realizing that you’re developing strong emotions for someone — something that a lot of people can relate to.

Last May 15, a few minutes before the drop of his single, David went live on his TikTok account for a single salubong while he was in Lujo Bar in Poblacion. At the strike of midnight, he celebrated with his fans online and was surprised when the DJ at Lujo suddenly played “I Think I Love You.”

Before the song was even released, it was actually featured in Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition. David entered Bahay ni Kuya as a Houseguest and after sharing with Kuya what his song is about, David was told that the Housemates would be divided into two groups — Team Kapamilya and Team Kapuso — and tasked to come up with a dance choreography for “I Think I Love You.”

Talented Will Ashley led Team Kapuso, crafting choreography and formations for his group. Esnyr, on the other hand, led Team Kapamilya; he recognized that their group didn’t have high-level dancers, so they focused on delivering a fun and creative number inspired by high school performances and Christmas party presentations.

In the end, David chose Team Kapamilya as the winner, praising their synchronized and well-thought-out routine. David rewarded them with lollipops, something that the Housemates appreciated and enjoyed.

“I Think I Love You” is currently getting a lot of love online. On the day of its release, it was number five on the Top Songs list of iTunes Philippines, making it the only OPM song to make it to the top 5.

On TikTok, several supporters are using the audio for fan-made edits of David and his onscreen partner Barbie Forteza. A lot of people have also been dancing to it and making their own choreography for it, including TikToker Miko Yanson, who is famous for coming up with dance choreos for a lot of trending songs online.

David releasing “I Think I Love You” was something a lot of people didn’t expect, but it is definitely a pleasant surprise especially for his fans. During his PBB guesting, David shared: “I really just wanted to try everything — sa showbiz, sa buhay. One of those is releasing a song; yun na nga po yung ‘I Think I Love You’ — para po sa mga taong may gusto pero di pa niya masabi.”

With the good reception to “I Think I Love You,” we won’t be surprised if and when David releases another song.

28 Philippine cities join WWF’s One Planet Cities program in 10th anniversary

The highest-ever number of cities are joining WWF-Philippines’ One Planet Cities (OPC) program marking a significant growth in the Philippines urban sustainability movement since it started 10 years ago.

“We are seeing an almost double growth in the number of cities that joined the program, from 15 cities in the 2023-2024 cycle to 28 in the 2025-2026 cycle. This is the highest number of cities in the Philippines that are making a strong commitment to sustainable urban development,” Atty. Gia Ibay, Climate and Energy Programme (CEP) Head, said in a statement.

“The increasing number of cities that are recognizing the importance of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and advocating for sustainable development is a clear sign. The call for all sectors to unite and take action for the climate is not just a necessity, but an urgent one, especially now as we mark our 10th anniversary,” she added.

Of the 28 cities leading the charge, 17 are returning, while 11 are joining for the first time.

Luzon:

Visayas:

Mindanao:

The significant increase in the number of participating cities was helped in part by the support of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), which endorsed the OPC program to its member cities. The LCP’s endorsement has been instrumental in spreading awareness and encouraging more cities to join the program, demonstrating the power of collaboration in driving sustainable urban development.

Since 2015, WWF-Philippines has been implementing the global WWF OPC program and its flagship One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) – a biennial, global challenge that assists cities to act as transformation catalysts, implementing integrated and inclusive plans in line with the 1.5°C, while ensuring urban climate resilience and unlocking individual and collective climate actions. OPCC is the longest and largest friendly competition since 2011, engaging a total of 900 cities all over the globe.

“A decade into the OPC  journey in the Philippines, we are inspired by the continued commitment of our partner cities and we are proud to witness more cities stepping up to lead climate action. Urban areas are significant in the reduction of carbon emissions while fostering collaboration with stakeholders and governments, which is vital in driving inclusive, adaptive, and science-based climate solutions at the local level,” Imee Bellen, Project Manager of One Planet Cities, said.

For OPCC, all participating cities will report their climate actions, strategies, and data through a standardized international platform, which is reviewed by WWF and compared against good-practice, climate-action-planning criteria guided by the OPCC Assessment Framework.

Each participating city will then receive a tailor-made “Strategic Feedback Report,” which shows the city’s climate journey, its alignment with the Paris Agreement, the alignment of the city’s goals and targets versus their actual initiatives, and providing further recommendations on the most effective actions to meet such targets.

A “Localized Feedback Assessment Report” that takes into consideration the national context, including policies, geographical location, and financial viability, will be provided by WWF-Philippines, with the assistance of the ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat (ICLEI-SEAS).

A key addition to this 2025-2026 cycle is the launch of WWF’s Strategic Support Program (SSP)—a new initiative designed to provide cities with structured learning opportunities and guidance to strengthen their climate strategies. Through a dynamic mix of webinars, practical guides, and group-based coaching, the SSP will equip cities with tools and insights to help them develop, communicate, and track science-based climate action.

Locally, WWF-Philippines will also deliver relevant activities to assist cities in reporting climate data and improving local climate plans and actions. This support will be provided through a series of capacity-building workshops and consultations throughout the two-year local implementation of the program.

Additional activities are also planned to actively engage a diverse range of urban stakeholders, including youth, educators, private organizations, and city representatives. To kick off their 2025-2026 OPC engagement, a workshop with these 28 Philippine cities will be conducted in the 3rd week of June.
