  • In this season of al fresco dining, City of Dreams Manila hits the spot – at Nobu Manila, Wave, and Breezes

Few places can match the posh feel of City of Dreams’ al fresco spots:

 1) Nobu Manila

Bringing the renowned and hip vibe of Nobu restaurants around the globe that draw celebrities to its doors, Nobu Manila now also opens for lunch, serving to fill, and easy-to-serve donburi (Japanese rice bowl meal) specials and Bento lunch meals daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Al fresco diners at Nobu Manila’s floating cabanas and patio area surrounded by a lush garden, while indulging in the restaurant’s donburi menu which consists of six choices, from premium meats to the freshest seafood, served over steamed rice. These include: the signature Nobu Manila-style Pork Sisig, a mouthwatering dish of sous vide pork belly with aji amarillo aioli, poached egg and bacon furikake; and Nobu-style “Bistek”, a flavorful combination of beef cubes, shitake mushrooms, caramelized onions with yuzu soy; among others.

Nobu Manila-style Pork Sisig

Luxurious Bento meals are also available: the Assorted Sushi Bento, composed of house special cut rolls, salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, and tamago; and the Nobu Premium Bento, a good choice for diners who opt to upgrade their donburi with field green salad in the signature Matsuhisa dressing, chicken gyoza, miso soup, and assorted fruit slices.

Other delectable items to delight sushi lovers include the spicy big eye tuna, salmon with avocado, eel with avocado, salmon skin, California roll, shrimp tempura roll, and vegetable sushi rolls. For dessert, Green Tea Leche Flan with azuki beans, goma tuile, and mochi bites; and the classic Leche Flan with caramel sauce cap the meal.

Nobu Manila is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for dine-in and take-away. For dinner, a la carte and Nobu’s signature Omakase menus are offered.

2) Wave and Breezes

Two chic and contemporary restaurant-cum-bar venues situated at the urban enclave’s scenic pool deck — Wave, which is adjacent to Nobu Manila, and Breezes at Nuwa Manila – also make for pleasant open-air all-day dining.

Guests can choose from an array of all-time favorite fare and quick meals in an eclectic menu that includes splendid breakfast favorites, salads, savory sandwiches, and signature burgers, sumptuous pizzas, and excellent pasta varieties to complement homemade sauces.

Grilled Ribeye Tagliata at Breezes and Wave

Fish and chips, deep-fried calamari, and nachos are among the traditional light snacks that go well with the extensive array of refreshing smoothies, juices, cocktails, and spirits that complete the tropical vibe of both al fresco restaurants. By night, the two outlets transform into trendy tropical bars, replete with mood lighting.

Lilting music wafting in the background lures diners to leisurely enjoy tempting entrées that include: Grilled Beef Rib Eye Tagliata with roasted onions, confit garlic, and arugula greens; Crispy Pork Belly with snow pea tendrils, mustard and soy sauce with calamansi dip; and Baked Atlantic Salmon Steak with caramelized lemon and Pommery beurre blanc sauce, among others., Well-loved summer desserts are also offered, such as Halo-halo, banana split, ice creams, and sorbets.

For travel to be delightful, one must have a good place to stay time and again. Whenever I feel like going out of town, my favorite staycation would always be at the Harvest Hotel, the only modern 4-star hotel located in the center of Cabanatuan City.

Whether you’re going away on a family vacation, a short getaway, or a business trip, you can definitely have a pleasant stay here for many good reasons. Recent reviews from guests and visitors support this encouraging feedback. Harvest has now become the hotel of choice in Cabanatuan City for business and leisure travelers, as well as, for the local residents who prefer to hold their social events and business functions here.

Harvest GM Lou Bermejo Gorospe (Photo from the FB Page of Ms. Gorospe)

Harvest Hotel General Manager, Lou Bermejo Gorospe feels thankful and inspired to hear positive reviews from hotel guests. “The reviews range from being satisfied on how the hotel staff attended to them, having comfortable rooms, beds, pillows, room interior; bathroom fixtures, and personal care sets; to good food and value for money. Guests remarked that Harvest is stunning for the price,” Gorospe happily shares. “Guests are immediately impressed with just about everything!”

GM Gorospe (center) with her entire team.

Part of the entire delightful experience is the people who make up the Harvest Hotel team.  “We make sure we carry out our Corporate Core Values in our daily work,” says the lady General Manager.

They uphold such values on Innovation, Integrity, Service, Passion, and Teamwork that make them a cut above the rest of the hotels in Cabanatuan City.  “Our hotel standard is no less than to provide our valued guests with exceptional care and top-notch products and facilities.”

This 29-square meter room comes with two (2) single beds, a bathroom with shower, a working table, LCD cable TV, a coffee/tea making facility, an in-room safe, and a mini-bar.

The Standard Queen room is also a 29-sqm room with one queen bed, a bathroom with a shower, a working table, an LCD cable TV, a coffee/tea making facility, an in-room safe, and a mini-bar.

Next to the Standard Room is the Suite Room which boasts of a 38-square meter space that comes with one queen bed, a bathroom with a shower, a working table, an LCD cable TV, a coffee/tea making facility, an in-room safe, and a mini-bar.

The best room of Harvest Hotel is the Loft located on the topmost floor. This 67-square meter consists of two floors with a separate living area, dining space, and a king-sized bed, and a bathroom. These are best for honeymooners, couples, and family guests.

For an uninterrupted workout, you can still sweat it out at the fitness gym located on the third floor. It offers the latest and complete gym equipment.

Satisfying Dining Experience

Aside from the comfortable rooms, one can always look forward to the delicious food being served at Café Ecija Restaurant and Bar, located in the lobby. It is ready to serve a sumptuous buffet for breakfast and an all-day a la carte menu every day featuring Filipino and international dishes. It has a 76-seating capacity and is open to in-house guests and walk-in diners daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. An outdoor swimming pool is just right outside Café Ecija.

Chef Lester Bergado

During our visit, Chef  Lester Bergado, the affable in-house chef of Harvest Hotel happily served to us the dishes he prepared for our photoshoot. He shared that they have added more Pinoy comfort food to the menu. Aside from the regular Salmon Head Sa Miso and Hipon sa Kamatis, additional dishes are the all-time favorites, such as Kare-Kare, Caldereta, Pininyahang Manok, Pork Lechon and Harvest Sinigang Beef Buko.

The Experience team was also lucky to have tasted the Friday Feast of the World Buffet with choices ranging from salad, cold and hot appetizer, soup, grilled, hot dishes, and dessert. For the salad, they served Mixed Green Salad with Croutons, Parmesan, corn kernels, tomato, Onion, Cucumber, Capsicum, and Bacon. For the dressing, choices were Caesar, Thousand Island, and Italian Dressing.

Cold and hot appetizers were Assorted Maki Rolls and Mixed Cold Cuts; Crispy Pork Belly infused in Chili jam and Eggplant Parmigiana with Cheese Sauce. For the soup, it felt calming to have tried Seafood Shabu-Shabu and Tuscan Tomato Soup. From the carving station, we surely tried the Slow Roasted Beef Short Plate with Wild Mushroom Sauce; and the grilled Beef, Pork, Chicken, Fish, and Sausage. Happy tummy, indeed!

For hot dishes, they served Asian Beef Kofta in Sour Cream Sauce, Hainanese Chicken, my favorite Phad Thai, and Shanghai Fried Rice. For the Western offering, they prepared Pork Escalope with Peppercorn Sauce, Seafood Gnocchi, Vegetable Polonaise, and Mushroom Risotto Rice.

Choices for dessert vary from Crème Brule Shots, Panacotta Shots, Chocolate Bar. There were also Marshmallows, Breadsticks and Wafer stick at the Chocolate Fountain Station.

Our gastronomic experience didn’t end at the buffet station. There were also additional plated dishes served for our feature and consumption. We tried BBQ Baby Back Ribs, a Texas-style smoked BBQ baby back ribs served with buttered corn, coleslaw, and French fries. Followed by Beef Kare-Kare, slow-cooked ox tripe, beef chunks, and tropical vegetables simmered in Filipino-style peanut sauce served with famous bagoong. For the beverage, they offered us to try the Harvest Potion and Winty Citrus Dew.

Harvest Potion and Winty Citrus Dew

I had a fill of Adobong Pusit, a Classic Filipino Adobo dish where sliced squid is cooked in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, onion, and tomatoes. I must say this was my favorite from among the dishes served to us. I always crave Adobong Pusit since this is seldom prepared at home.

The writer in one of the cozy rooms at Harvest

The Seafood and Aubergine Salad in Turmeric and Cider Reduction, was by far, what Chef Lester has recommended. Seeing the assorted fresh lettuce, grilled seafood, and aubergine with reduction of turmeric and cider vinegar in an ensemble made it an irresistible dish to try.

As a finale, one not to miss the appetizing desserts – a choice of Choco Cream Cake, a Black Forest cake filled with chocolate ganache; and Sans rival, a layered meringue cake with buttercream and chopped cashew nuts.

All in all, it was a satisfying hotel experience made truly special by meeting the hotel owners themselves while enjoying the night away with friends. The team even had a jamming session with Leo Pisces Duo’s band playing that night.

Evelyn Wise (also known as Tia Belle), the affable and hands-on owner of Tia Belle’s shares how she puts hard work and passion into her restaurant business. “Every time, I am at the kitchen, cooking and concocting sauces, I feel like dancing — dancing with my wok,” she smiles.  Having spent 20 years of her life in Europe, it was clear to her mind that she wanted to put up her own Filipino restaurant upon her return to the country. Cooking is like second nature to this native of Nueva Ecija.

From its meticulous ingredients to the way it’s cooked, Tia Belle’s food absolutely stems from the all-important Filipino trait and that is hospitality. “We want to be of service to our fellow countrymen while keeping and incorporating the important values and traditions of what being Filipino is all about,” she quips. Part of its mission is to foster, share and celebrate Filipino cuisine and culture in a friendly and comfortable environment.

Furthermore, it puts a premium on quality and excellence. “We provide an optimal dining experience for our customers by making sure that their dining experience is our responsibility the minute they step into our restaurant,” she explains. “Only the freshest meat and healthiest ingredients are keys to our success!”

It seeks to offer inventive and creative Filipino food with no pretensions. “We want to give our customers an authentic and genuine glimpse of the Philippines by honoring and delving into the Filipino culture and traditions through our services, atmosphere, art, and food,” says Evelyn.

Tia Belle’s is a complete package – from the food, the ambiance, and to its hospitable and warm welcome of the staff and Tia Belle herself that will make you feel at home. You will love its native setup and display of old Filipino trimmings, a very calming and relaxing background music of kundiman (which you hardly hear these days).

To complete the dining experience,  visit Tia Belle’s gift shop, the Tia’s Aromatherapy Essential Oil, and Cleopatra from Canada to bring home some souvenirs and gifts for your loved ones.

“Flavors of Pampanga: Manyaman!” happening on May 28 in Clark, Pampanga

The Department of Tourism (DOT) invites everyone to take part in “Flavors of Pampanga: Manyaman!”, which will showcase the diverse culinary heritage and rich food history of the region, particularly in Pampanga, the Culinary Capital of the Philippines.

“Flavors of Pampanga: Manyaman!” will be held on May 28 (Friday) in Clark, Pampanga, and will feature the region’s diverse food heritage through cooking demonstrations of culinary experts, including chef de cuisines from hotels in Clark. The event will be broadcasted live and streamed online through the DOT-Region III official Facebook page, and the public is invited to be part of it[1] .

Pampanga is a leading proponent of culinary tourism in the Philippines and we would like to thank everyone from this region who has supported, promoted, and furthered culinary tourism. The desire to eat good food and immerse oneself in culture through its cuisine is a powerful motivator for traveling,” said Romulo-Puyat.

But the event is only one of several efforts of the region to enrich its food tourism. The DOT, through its Central Luzon Regional Office, is also organizing the “¡SABROSO! – A Filipino and Spanish Food Fair”, which will highlight and showcase the Filipino dishes that were influenced by the Spanish people. “Food is one of the strengths of the region and we want to enrich tourists’ experience by sharing with them our heritage and culture through our food. We will conduct food mapping for the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan so that we have an inventory of the heirloom dishes and where all ingredients are coming from. This will be significant in a more sustainable culinary tourism plan,” concluded Puyat.

The tourism secretary also emphasized that one of the tourism circuits the DOT is creating is a “Farm, Food and Pilgrimage Tour” covering the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija.

The tour includes farm-to-table activities, savoring authentic Kapampangan dishes while enjoying the scenic view of Mt. Arayat; and visiting the Herencia de Bacolor farm resort in Pampanga, the iconic Monasterio de Tarlac, the Dueg-Kapya Ken in San Clemente, Tarlac, which has breathtaking views, and the Mudita Glamping Resort in San Jose, Tarlac, where rooms are made of nipa huts and stand in the middle of rice field.

In Nueva Ecija, tourists can visit the Argamosa Farm, a Balinese-inspired resort with farm-to-table activities, the scenic Colosboa Hills, and Mt. Bulaylay in Cuyapo, as well as the Shrine of the Holy Face of Jesus in Nampicuan.

The DOT-Region III will also launch the “Slow Food, Slow Travel Caravan” featuring Slow Food of Bacolor, Lubao, and Sasmuan heirloom recipes in Pampanga. Slow food is a concept that seeks to preserve traditional cuisines and promotes sustainable preparation of food.

Aside from this, the DOT has also created tourism circuits for travelers who want different kinds of adventure. The Region circuits include Eco and Adventure Tour in Nueva Ecija and Aurora; River Adventure in Bulacan and Eco and Wine Farm featuring various farms and vineyards in Tarlac; and a Soul Circuit, an inter-regional circuit that will include the Manila Bay Cruise, Cavite’s Corregidor, and Bataan’s Mt. Samat and Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.

Leisure travel is now allowed in the Province of Pampanga, following the health protocols. Pampanga and Clark are open to all. However, Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal, known as NCR Plus, is under general community quarantine “with heightened restrictions” until May 31, 2021. Only essential travel is allowed in and out of NCR Plus.
