28 Philippine cities join WWF’s One Planet Cities program in 10th anniversary

The highest-ever number of cities are joining WWF-Philippines’ One Planet Cities (OPC) program marking a significant growth in the Philippines urban sustainability movement since it started 10 years ago.

“We are seeing an almost double growth in the number of cities that joined the program, from 15 cities in the 2023-2024 cycle to 28 in the 2025-2026 cycle. This is the highest number of cities in the Philippines that are making a strong commitment to sustainable urban development,” Atty. Gia Ibay, Climate and Energy Programme (CEP) Head, said in a statement.

“The increasing number of cities that are recognizing the importance of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and advocating for sustainable development is a clear sign. The call for all sectors to unite and take action for the climate is not just a necessity, but an urgent one, especially now as we mark our 10th anniversary,” she added.

Of the 28 cities leading the charge, 17 are returning, while 11 are joining for the first time.

The significant increase in the number of participating cities was helped in part by the support of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), which endorsed the OPC program to its member cities. The LCP’s endorsement has been instrumental in spreading awareness and encouraging more cities to join the program, demonstrating the power of collaboration in driving sustainable urban development.

Since 2015, WWF-Philippines has been implementing the global WWF OPC program and its flagship One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) – a biennial, global challenge that assists cities to act as transformation catalysts, implementing integrated and inclusive plans in line with the 1.5°C, while ensuring urban climate resilience and unlocking individual and collective climate actions. OPCC is the longest and largest friendly competition since 2011, engaging a total of 900 cities all over the globe.

“A decade into the OPC  journey in the Philippines, we are inspired by the continued commitment of our partner cities and we are proud to witness more cities stepping up to lead climate action. Urban areas are significant in the reduction of carbon emissions while fostering collaboration with stakeholders and governments, which is vital in driving inclusive, adaptive, and science-based climate solutions at the local level,” Imee Bellen, Project Manager of One Planet Cities, said.

For OPCC, all participating cities will report their climate actions, strategies, and data through a standardized international platform, which is reviewed by WWF and compared against good-practice, climate-action-planning criteria guided by the OPCC Assessment Framework.

Each participating city will then receive a tailor-made “Strategic Feedback Report,” which shows the city’s climate journey, its alignment with the Paris Agreement, the alignment of the city’s goals and targets versus their actual initiatives, and providing further recommendations on the most effective actions to meet such targets.

A “Localized Feedback Assessment Report” that takes into consideration the national context, including policies, geographical location, and financial viability, will be provided by WWF-Philippines, with the assistance of the ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat (ICLEI-SEAS).

A key addition to this 2025-2026 cycle is the launch of WWF’s Strategic Support Program (SSP)—a new initiative designed to provide cities with structured learning opportunities and guidance to strengthen their climate strategies. Through a dynamic mix of webinars, practical guides, and group-based coaching, the SSP will equip cities with tools and insights to help them develop, communicate, and track science-based climate action.

Locally, WWF-Philippines will also deliver relevant activities to assist cities in reporting climate data and improving local climate plans and actions. This support will be provided through a series of capacity-building workshops and consultations throughout the two-year local implementation of the program.

Additional activities are also planned to actively engage a diverse range of urban stakeholders, including youth, educators, private organizations, and city representatives. To kick off their 2025-2026 OPC engagement, a workshop with these 28 Philippine cities will be conducted in the 3rd week of June.

Nestlé Philippines, SF Group of Companies’s Sunfood Marketing Inc. Forge Partnership to Boost Sustainable Coffee Farming

Nestlé Philippines and the SF Group of Companies (SFGC) have sealed a strategic partnership with a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing, marking a significant step toward sustainable and profitable coffee farming in Northern Cotabato.

Under this partnership, Sunfood Marketing Inc., a subsidiary of SFGC, will spearhead efforts to expand Robusta coffee cultivation in the region. As part of SFGC’s agritech ecosystem—spanning farm inputs to food production—Sunfood will apply its expertise in agricultural technology and sustainable farming practices to enhance efficiency and productivity.

The pioneering partnership, the first of its kind for Nestlé, enhances its Nescafé Plan, dedicated to helping Filipino smallholder coffee farmers improve their yields, incomes, and quality of life for the long term, by sharing with them the most advantageous farming knowledge, techniques, and technology. Also included are basic business concepts, environmental sustainability practices, and regenerative agriculture. The latter aims not only to maintain but enhance future agricultural productivity, while building resilience to climate change. Further, the Nescafé Plan works with coffee farming communities to accelerate their development. Through the partnership, Nestlé PH will provide technical assistance and capacity-building programs to coffee farmers.

The Nescafé Plan is one means by which Nestlé PH is implementing responsible sourcing as a major aspect of its local roadmap for zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

By combining SFGC’s innovative farming solutions with Nestlé’s global standards for coffee cultivation, the partnership aims to strengthen the agricultural value chain, create economic opportunities for farmers, and build a coffee-growing network in Northern Cotabato.

More specifically, the focus of the partnership is strengthening and expanding Robusta coffee farming in Mindanao through the Corporate Growership Program of SMI. With domestic demand for coffee rising continuously, this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to scaling up Philippine coffee production and increasing Nestlé’s local sourcing of Robusta green coffee bean (GCB) as the country’s biggest coffee manufacturer, in support of farmers and the industry for eventual self-sufficiency and greater food security.

Hapag Movement meets target one year early, helps over 120,000 families facing involuntary hunger

The Hapag Movement, Globe’s hunger alleviation program, has reached its impact goal one year ahead of schedule, supporting over 120,000 Filipino families through the collective support of Globe and TM customers, corporate donors, and mobilization partners.

Originally targeting 100,000 families by the end of 2025, the initiative raised Php 25.37 million in 2024 alone, bringing total funds raised to Php 53 million since 2022 and enabling it to provide meals to 120,455 families facing food insecurity.

“The overwhelming support for the Hapag Movement reflects the dedication of individuals, businesses, and organizations that share our vision of addressing involuntary hunger in the Philippines. Reaching this milestone sooner than expected strengthens our resolve to expand our efforts and create lasting change,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe.

Since its launch, the Hapag Movement has worked with the Ayala Foundation, Scholars of Sustenance, Tzu Chi Foundation, and World Vision. In 2024, it brought in three new mobilization partners—Rise Against Hunger and international organizations UN World Food Programme and Project PEARLS. This aimed to draw international attention to persistent hunger incidence in the Philippines, allowing the Hapag Movement to reach more communities in need.

The Hapag Movement has received support from over 1.1 million Globe and TM subscribers, who donated Php 11.67 million in Rewards points through the GlobeOne app.  Total contributions to the program have accounted for 23% of all assistance provided through the platform.

In addition, 1,871 Globe employees took part in various Hapag Movement activities in 2024, demonstrating their commitment to making a difference.

To grow its impact, the Hapag Movement launched innovative fundraisers like the “Ibalik ang Sarap ng Pasko” holiday drive with SM’s shopper loyalty program SMAC, integrating donations into holiday shopping, and the Gourmet Giving Series, featuring fine dining fundraiser events with 12 top Metro Manila restaurants in partnership with Facebook community Fine Dining Club Philippines.

The Hapag Movement also tapped into the power of fandoms, enlisting support from Blackpink and BTS fan communities, Electronic Sports Gaming Summit gamers, ToyCon collectors, Lyropera enthusiasts, and Kwentoon artists to encourage contributions.

The program also gained invaluable support from the Rotary Club of Makati Business District, BPI Foundation, and Kumu, among others.

With its initial target surpassed, the Hapag Movement is now focused on scaling its livelihood training programs nationwide to provide families with sustainable means of supporting themselves.

The initiative is also exploring ways to contribute to the fight against child stunting, ensuring that Filipino children receive the proper nutrition they need in their critical early years.

Purpose-built to meet international standards, SMXCITE will feature five expansive exhibition halls, designed to accommodate up to 803 standard 3×3-meter booths. Complementing these are four fully equipped meeting rooms, ideal for breakout sessions, closed-door discussions, and strategic planning engagements. Two dedicated VIP lounges will provide an elevated experience for top-level executives, dignitaries, and private delegations that reflect SMX’s commitment to corporate hospitality and seamless service.

The venue can host a little over 18,000 guests and engineered to support large-format events for both local and global audiences. Sustainability is also central to the development, such that SMXCITE will incorporate natural lighting, energy-efficient infrastructure, and environmentally responsible design principles aligned with SMX Manila’s eco-conscious benchmarks.

With this expansion, SMX Convention Center’s total leasable footprint across its national network will grow to nearly 60,000 square meters, spanning key cities including Manila, Taguig, Mandaluyong, Clark, Olongapo, Bacolod, Cebu, and Davao.
