CCP TIG Gallery’s ‘The White Elephant Project’ inquires into architectural usages and purposes

The Cultural Center of the Philippines opens the second exhibit of the Bulwagang Roberto Chabet (TIG Gallery), titled “The White Elephant Project” by visual artist Jomar Galutera, on view until August 13, 2023.

Curated by Jason Dy, SJ, the exhibit is a serial inquiry into monumental infrastructures inspired by the artist’s mushroom farming. To support his independent practice, Galutera propagates edible mushrooms and sells them to local restaurants in Lucban, Quezon.

While farming, he gained insights on how organic materials flourish in decomposing substrate matter and correlated it on how disused, derelict, and destroyed buildings may have a future for utilitarian and humanitarian purposes, leading him to conceptualize and exhibit The White Elephant Project.

For the iteration exhibited at the TIG Gallery, the artist discursively engages the cultural complex, specifically the Manila Film Center (MFC), as another site of exploration for his first solo exhibition in Metro Manila. He delves into the history, architecture, and adaptive reuse of the building, as well as other complex factors that shaped its Parthenon-inspired architecture.

“This is the second of the series; the first being the running commentary and critique on the Bataan Power Plant. For this current exhibit at TIG Gallery, the artist chose the Manila Film Center. Admittedly, it had some lofty ideals when the Manila Film Center was imagined to be created. Nonetheless, we know that eventually when the film festivals ended, we had to reinvent the building,” shared Ariel Yonzon, the CCP associate director and head of the Production and Exhibition Department.

Through the years, efforts to reinvent the structure were made. Before the pandemic, the CCP planned to repurpose it as a communal creative space for artists and filmmakers.

“The artist’s insight on the building gives us the very basic definition of architecture. When we try to define architecture, it is always just forms and functions. Is the building, according to its form, able to serve what its intended purpose? The exhibit tries to delve into this,” said Yonzon during the exhibit opening held recently.

Through monochromatic paintings and video installations, the artist acts like a hybrid researcher that surveys online film clips and resources related to the film center. He did onsite visits and documented it through photographs and videos to understand the interplay between architecture and social space, history with its current evolution, as well as arts and public buildings.

Join the White Elephant Project workshop on July 18, 2pm. The workshop is co-organized with CCP Intertextual Division for the National Children’s Book Day Celebration.

There will also be a talk, dubbed “Inquiries and Interplays” with artist Jomar Galutera and curator Jason Dy, SJ, at 4pm. Galutera will talk about the first presentation in SaLang (Single-Piece Exhibition Series) at Project Space Pilipinas in Lucban, Quezon; while Dy will discuss the research and creative process for the current iteration that revolves around the Parthenon-inspired architecture of the Manila Film Center. The conversation aims to encourage thinking about how artmaking can present complex and historical subject matter in exhibitions.

The White Elephant exhibit runs until August 13, 2023. The Bulwagang Roberto Chabet (TIG Gallery) is located at the third floor of the Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater), inside the CCP Complex.

To keep you posted on the latest CCP news and current events, visit the CCP website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) or follow the official CCP social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok.

Life is too short and you just really want to live your life as fullest as possible. At the end of the day, you want a peaceful home, that feels full of love and your furniture does reflect that. So choose something that would calm your soul,” Heart said.

In the evening, Genteel Home transformed the Bonifacio Hall of Manila House into an enchanting garden as part of its 10th-anniversary celebration and launched five more iconic chairs inspired by five other Filipino icons who made a mark in their respective fields. These include Olympic Gold Medalist Hidilyn Diaz; Former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Box-office comedy queen Vice Ganda; award-winning broadcast journalist Karen Davila; and multi-awarded actor and singer Piolo Pascual.

“I am proud to say that every bespoke masterpiece meticulously crafted by Genteel Home holds a story, a narrative that transcends time and connects generations. It’s a tale of love, joy, and memories, waiting to be shared and treasured by your loved ones in the years to come. We don’t just create furniture; we create milestones and legacies. We believe that the objects we surround ourselves with shape our lives and leave a lasting impact,” Katrina shared.

Dimples Romana, Genteel Home’s brand ambassador, also shared why she fell in love with the brand, “For us women, we just find a mirror and then we look at ourselves and tapos na kasi nagmamadali ka. When it comes to Genteel pieces, you stay there because you just want to look at yourself and empower yourself even more.”

Beyond their creative prowess, Genteel Home is a brand with a conscience. Sustainability and community lie at the core of their values. Philippines’ new tourism slogan encourages love for country

The Philippines is ready for a fresh start as the Department of Tourism (DOT) finally unveils the new tourism slogan: “Love The Philippines,” a testament to how this country calls out to anyone who has a thrill for adventure, captivating beauty, and the embrace of a newfound home.

After 11 years of sporting the iconic “It’s More Fun in the Philippines,” the new slogan was unveiled at DOT’s 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Manila Hotel. Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco emphasizes that this slogan is also a “call to action” towards Filipinos and international citizens alike to discover and explore the Philippines with the numerous things it has to offer.

Despite being a slogan, this change has brought new heights and challenges for the country’s tourism department. While the country has countless destinations lined up for travelers, there are plenty of places left undiscovered yet well-maintained by the locals. The DOT also hopes that this new slogan will bring attention to other places that are not particularly highlighted in past tourism campaigns.

They also wanted to showcase a more Filipino brand– and the “Love The Philippines” slogan encapsulates what it takes to become a country full of love, natural wonders, an enticing history, and our unique cultural footprint.

In the modern era, travelers have begun to change their preferences and the experiences that they seek whenever they go out of their comfort zone. Most people look for more scenic yet calm destinations while others tend to go to the undiscovered sites and take their exploration to new heights. As these preferences evolve, the DOT also adjusts to recent travel trends.

This branding, if effective, will showcase the Philippines’ hidden beauty and the love within its people. Marie Adriano, the brand and strategic planner from the marketing firm Doyle, Dane, and Bernbach (DDB) Philippines, explained that there is a positive association to travelers when it comes to the word love– a longing and caring feeling, one laced with newfound affection.

However, recent controversies surrounding the usage of stock footage in the slogan’s promotional video campaign drew flak from the netizens. The video contained footage shot from various countries such as Brazil, Indonesia, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates, as per the Agence France-Presse’s fact-checking arm.

The DOT’s creative arm, DBB, has spoken up about the stock footage issue, saying that it is a “standard practice in the industry.” They defended the usage, for the video’s intention is to be a “mood video” to attract and excite internal stakeholders for their tourism campaign. The whole campaign, including the slogan, utilized a ₱49M fund in total. Due to this controversy, the contract between DBB and DOT has been terminated, seeking accountability for the issue.

These developments have drawn mixed reactions from netizens, especially regarding the credibility of the DOT, the authenticity of the slogan, and its effects on the dwindling tourism in the country. This slogan is also created to honor the Filipinos, for their hospitality and love have bound the Philippines and continuously embraced citizens from all over the world with their big hearts. It is only right that its creation should be as genuine as its intention.

Home Credit Philippines snags Gold Stevie® for Diversity and Inclusion

As the company continues to live up to the standards and promote the DEI principles in the workplace and beyond, leading consumer finance company Home Credit Philippines bagged yet again another Gold Stevie® in the tenth annual Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards for the Innovative Achievement for Diversity and Inclusion category.

The company was recognized during a virtual awarding ceremony held last June 27, where all awardees across the Asia-Pacific region commemorated the achievements and innovations of these companies and how they contributed to their respective industries.

“Every day, we celebrate our employees’ diversity in gender, nationality, culture, age, and background. Beyond this, we foster a home where everyone can share their unique perspectives, respect each other’s needs, and reach their full potential without barriers,” said Alpha Omega Aquino, Home Credit Philippines’ Chief People Officer.

She added, “This Gold Stevie® award is an attestation of our commitment to championing and further promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and beyond. And here at Home Credit, we’re proud to say that there are no small roles, everyone is important.”

DEI in the workplace and beyond

Backed by its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG), Home Credit continues to foster diversity and inclusion by creating programs that aim to have meaningful engagement among all its employees.

In April 2022, the company forged partnerships with the Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (PBCWE) and the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce (PLCC) to further cement its commitment to achieving gender equality and inclusion in the workplace. The said organizations have guided Home Credit in creating policies, guidelines, and projects that helped the company efficiently promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Pride starts at Home

During this Pride Month, Home Credit held a series of activities to strengthen further its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These activities were conducted in partnership with its recently formed Pride Club composed of LGBTQ employees and allies.
