AIA Philippines launches Rethink Healthy, unveils study on Filipino well-being

AIA Philippines, formerly Philam Life and the domestic arm of AIA, the largest pan-Asian life insurer, has launched “Rethink Healthy,” a health and wellness campaign that aims to change the way people view and approach health. Rethink Healthy champions a holistic and sustainable approach to well-being, making healthy living more inclusive and accessible.

A key element of the launch of “Rethink Healthy” in the Philippines is the unveiling of the results of AIA Philippines’ research report, “Rethinking Healthy: What Overall Well-Being Means to Filipinos.”

At the launch event, hosted by television personality Bianca Gonzalez-Intal, leaders from AIA discussed the findings of the study. The research spans over 1,000 Filipino respondents nationwide across Generations1 X, Y (millennials) and Z. Results show that Filipinos generally define “being healthy” as having a healthy body (52%), healthy mind (30%), healthy finances (12%), and a healthy environment (7%).

(From left): Melissa Henson, Chief Marketing Officer, AIA Philippines; Stuart Spencer, AIA Group Chief Marketing Officer; and TV personality-host Bianca Gonzalez-Intal.

“Through these findings, we are now better informed on how we can help Filipinos build habits that foster healthier minds and bodies, build financial resilience, and promote sustainable practices — in ways that resonate with them so they will also feel seen, understood and supported in their unique wellness journeys,” shared Melissa Henson, Chief Marketing Officer, AIA Philippines.

Stuart A. Spencer, AIA Group Chief Marketing Officer, said, “Asia is getting wealthier but not healthier, and the rate of lifestyle diseases is rapidly accelerating. Consumers in Asia believe that being healthy is too hard, too expensive and out of reach. Rethink Healthy is about changing attitudes, mindsets, and behaviors, and debunking preconceived notions of what healthy means for everyone. Our goal is to make well-being more attainable and encourage more people to live Healthier, Longer, Better Lives.”

Sustainable wellness: Daily movements, adequate rest and the environment’s impact on health

Filipinos are increasingly prioritizing their health and embracing healthy lifestyles. This shift is evident as AIA’s study revealed that Filipinos engage in daily physical activities two to three times a week. These include light workouts that are easy to integrate in their day, like walking (71%), doing household chores (48%), running or jogging (44%) or doing gardening or yard work (20%). Fifteen percent (15%) also enjoy dancing, team sports and strength training for their fitness routines.

While daily movements are a priority, rest and sleep are also deemed important in nurturing survey respondents’ health, with 45% citing the importance of adequate rest and sleep, as well as work-life balance, and 41% mentioning regular stress management. However, 16% reported that they are suffering from sleep disorders, including insomnia.

Moreover, 47% of Filipinos also pointed out that their environment has an impact on how they feel and live each day. Thirty-eight (38%) cited intense heat and safety concerns related to crime and accidents as top concerns about their environment, while 37% see unpredictable weather influencing their well-being.

Breaking cycles of family health history

The study also identified how family history plays a significant role in Filipino health concerns. According to the report, 80% of respondents have a family history of illnesses, the most common of which are diabetes (32%), heart disease (30%), and weight-related concerns like obesity (21%). Others include severe allergies (18%) and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety (16%).

From the research, it was also found that Filipinos have an average of 2.3 illnesses that can be passed down generations within their family. Currently, members of Gen Z have an average of 2.5 inherited illnesses, while Gen Y and Gen X have 2.3 and 2, respectively.

Filipinos actively manage stress, but sometimes in unhealthy ways

Mental health is a major concern for Filipinos, with 41% reporting that they manage stress regularly, knowing chronic stress takes a toll on their well-being. Many do this by indulging in comfort food (52%) and binge-watching television shows (50%). These findings highlight stress-eating and sedentary lifestyles as prevalent coping mechanisms, which can lead to long-term health problems. Opting for more nutritious snacks and engaging in more outdoor activities can help address this.

Another form of stress reduction identified in the study is that 61% of Filipinos surveyed make sure to spend time with family and friends. Many eat meals together at home (71%), watch movies or television (49%), or go out to eat at restaurants or cafés (41%).

Healthy finances can help address physical and mental challenges

Financial stress is a significant barrier in Filipinos’ overall health, with 59% reporting stress related to finances and 47% citing financial challenges as a barrier to seeking quality healthcare.

To prepare for health emergencies, many Filipinos (65%) rely heavily on their personal savings; 46% on government assistance; and 43% on insurance, including health maintenance organizations (HMOs). However, two in five (42%) respondents shared that these funds may not be enough. In fact, 66% of those who already own insurance intends to buy another policy.

AIA’s “Rethink Healthy” encourages inclusive and whole-person approach to well-being
The “Rethink Healthy” launch featured interactive zones representing four pillars of health—physical, mental, financial, and environmental—offering a hands-on experience of AIA’s holistic approach. Additionally, AIA Philippines launched the AIA 100 Voices initiative, sharing inspiring and authentic stories of Filipinos embracing a redefined approach to health in their day-to-day.

For AIA Philippines, rethinking health unlocks the benefits of better health, greater resilience and sustainable living, empowering more Filipinos to live Healthier, Longer and Better Lives.

Rethinking Healthy, conducted in partnership with research firm Human8, surveyed more than 1,000 Filipinos, aged 18-59, in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. To download the study, visit https://www.aia.com.ph/en/health-and-wellness/rethink-healthy

Filipino Pianist Rowena Arrieta Returns for PPO Concert VI: Homecoming this March 14

Laureate pianist Rowena Arrieta makes a triumphant return to her homeland with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) for the highly anticipated sixth installment of its 40th concert season. Dubbed “Homecoming,” PPO Concert VI shares the warmth of home through musical brilliance on March 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater.

The much-anticipated comeback of Rowena Arrieta

Arrieta will be playing Franz Liszt’s Totentanz (Dance of Death) in PPO Concert VI: Homecoming. Composed in 1849, the dramatic piano and orchestra work is based on “Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)” from the Requiem Mass. Arrieta will showcase her world-class technical skills through the piano variations of “Totentanz”.

Truly a Pinoy Pride

Arrieta was hailed the “youngest and most promising of 82 contestants” in the prestigious Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. After winning the competition’s Fifth Prize and Special Prize in 1982, she received the title “Laureate”. To this date, Arrieta is the only Filipino to attain this honor.

One of the first graduates of the Philippines High School for the Arts (PHSA), Arrieta received her Master’s Degree from the renowned Moscow State Conservatory. She received the highest honors under the tutelage of Russian National Artist Yevgeny Malinin in 1985. While in Russia, she also earned a degree in Russian Language Pedagogy. She later pursued Professional Studies at the Manhattan School of Music as a student of Dr. Solomon Mikowsky and as a recipient of the Elva Van Gelder Memorial Scholarship.

Arrieta’s accolades include being one of the Ten Outstanding Women in the National Service (Philippines, 1989), Presidential Awards in Performance (Philippines, 1978–1979), and Second Prize as a songwriter in the 1979 Metro Pop Music Festival (Philippines).

Since 1990, Arrieta has been a faculty member of the National Piano Teachers Guild (USA). She was then inducted into the Hall of Fame of the U.S. National Piano Teachers Guild in 2009.

PPO CONCERT VI: Homecoming Takes Flight

The PPO Concert VI: Homecoming unfolds with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, a renowned violin and orchestra work inspired by George Meredith’s poem of the same title. Composed in 1914, the piece portrays the image of a lark in flight. In “The Lark Ascending,” Vaughan Williams makes use of sweeping melodies to evoke a sense of freedom.

PPO guest concertmaster and artist-in-residence Diomedes Saraza Jr. will perform this exquisite work, highlighting its emotional depth.

PPO’S Artistin-Residence Diomedes Saraza Jr. Joins Concert VI: Homecoming

Before becoming PPO’s guest concertmaster and artist-in-residence, Saraza Jr. was a 3-year-old playing the violin with his father. His formal training began at St. Scholastica’s College in Manila. Through a full scholarship, Saraza Jr. received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School in New York.

At 19 years old, Saraza Jr. was the first Filipino Outstanding Academic Achievement awardee of former U.S. President Barack Obama’s Education Awards Program. He then pursued a Master of Musical Arts degree as a full scholar at Yale University. At Yale, he received the Brodus Erle Prize and successfully debuted at Carnegie Hall with the PPO.

Musical Tales of Home

The PPO Concert VI: Homecoming concludes with Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite, an orchestral arrangement of unforgettable moments from the composer’s ballet “Swan Lake”.

An evening of exquisite musical storytelling, PPO Concert VI: Homecoming holds a diverse repertoire that transcends time and borders. Under the baton of Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, this unmissable concert harnesses music’s power to shape and preserve cultural identities.

Tickets for PPO Concert VI: Homecoming on March 14 are priced at Php 3,000, Php 2,500, Php 2,000, and Php 1,500. They are now available online via TicketWorld. Culinary journey at Cyan Modern Kitchen

As we ventured through the hotel, we were captivated by its exceptional amenities, but it was at Cyan Modern Kitchen on the third floor of the bay wing that our culinary journey truly began. This all-day dining gem dazzles with modern interpretations of traditional international dishes, each crafted with fresh, seasonal, and sustainably sourced ingredients. During our stay, we delighted in the vibrant flavors and enticing presentations of the buffet menu, which was a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

Families and couples gathered around tables indulging in a delightful spread of mouthwatering dishes. The air was infused with the tempting aromas of sizzling bacon and freshly brewed coffee, creating an inviting atmosphere. Amidst the lively hustle and bustle, the attentive staff moved gracefully through the room, ensuring that every guest’s needs were met with warmth and care. One of our most cherished experiences was at the Madeleine High Tea, a delightful haven perfect for afternoon indulgence. It was here that we savored lovely cups of tea and rich coffee paired with an array of delectable pastries, each bite a sweet escape from the ordinary.

Alike Galentine’ s Day event.

We enjoyed a delightful afternoon at our company’s Galentine’s Day event, where the atmosphere was enchanting. The venue was adorned with a spectrum of vibrant flowers, creating a breathtaking tapestry of colors that brightened the space. As we witnessed the flower arrangement activity, we experienced a sense of tranquility while forging deeper connections with the wonderful women around us. Laughter and conversation flowed freely, making it a truly memorable celebration of friendship and creativity.

Throughout our stay, Lanson Place provided us with unforgettable experiences that linger in our memories. The warmth and charm of this place have undoubtedly secured a special spot in our hearts, and we eagerly look forward to many more visits in the future.
