SM Hotels Celebrates Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod’s Five-Year Legacy

For the past five years, SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) has continued to strengthen its footprint in the Visayas through Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod. Since welcoming its first guests on July 8, 2021, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod has become more than just a place to stay.

As the first internationally branded hotel in Bacolod City, it stands as a testament to SM Hotels and Conventions Corp.’s vision of bringing globally recognized hospitality experiences to emerging destinations across the Philippines. Over the past five years, the hotel has established itself as a trusted destination for business and leisure travelers while fostering meaningful relationships with guests, partners, and the local community.

Opening amid one of the most challenging periods in the hospitality industry’s history, the hotel demonstrated resilience through its steadfast commitment to its people, the planet, and the communities it serves. Guided by SMHCC’s sustainability and service-driven philosophy, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod has continued to grow through strong partnerships, dedicated team members, and purposeful initiatives that have shaped its legacy over the past five years.

To commemorate the milestone, the hotel mounted a series of anniversary activities anchored on the theme of forging a lasting legacy.

The celebration began with a community medical mission in Barangay Canlandog, Murcia. In partnership with the Agora Refuge Center (ARC) Bacolod and the Philippine Air Force Tactical Operations Group 6, together with the support of Barangay Captain Celso Belleza, the initiative provided residents with free medical consultations, medicines, and haircut services, which embody SMHCC’s commitment to creating a positive impact beyond its hotel walls.

Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod proudly recognized its Employees of the Second Quarter, with the awarding led by General Manager Ramon Makilan, together with SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. Senior Vice President for Operations Cathy Nepomuceno and Vice President for Commercial Melissa Carlos.

On its official anniversary, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod honored its “Moment Makers” who are passionate individuals whose dedication has been instrumental in the hotel’s success over the past five years. The celebration was attended by SMHCC executives, including Melissa Carlos, Vice President for Commercial, and Cathy Nepomuceno, Senior Vice President for Operations. Highlighting the people behind the milestone, Ms. Nepomuceno shared, “A true legacy isn’t built within the walls of a building, but within the hearts of the people who run it. Our five-year success story was written by the collective passion of every Moment Maker here today.” The gathering also served as a town hall and employee recognition ceremony, celebrating outstanding team members for their exceptional performance and consistently positive guest feedback.

The anniversary festivities culminated with “Legacy Night,” a celebration honoring the hotel’s valued clients, business partners, media friends, and content creators who have contributed to its journey. Guests enjoyed an evening of fellowship highlighted by raffle prizes, including concert tickets, Swim & Dine packages, and overnight stays at Park Inn by Radisson and other SM Hotels properties.

Leading the ceremonial toast, newly appointed General Manager Ramon Makilan expressed gratitude to the community that has embraced the hotel over the years. “When you combine Radisson’s world-class ‘Yes I Can!’ spirit with the undeniable sweetness of the Negrenses, you get an unmatched brand of hospitality that proudly puts the best of Bacolod on the map,” Mr. Makilan shared.

Continuing the legacy – Legacy Night capped off Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod’s 5th anniversary celebration, bringing together our valued clients, community partners, suppliers, affiliates, media friends, bloggers, and content creators for an evening of gratitude and meaningful connections.

One of the evening’s highlights was the recognition of the hotel’s long-standing sustainability partners whose collaborations have created meaningful environmental and social impact. The Philippine Air Force was recognized for supporting 19 community outreach activities, while the Negros Economic Development Foundation (NEDF) was honored for helping convert nearly 150,000 kilos of food waste. Green Solutions PH was likewise recognized for its partnership on the Biodiesel Project, which has transformed used cooking oil into more than 3,400 liters of biodiesel donated to coastal communities.

As Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod enters its next chapter, SMHCC remains committed to elevating hospitality experiences while creating lasting value for its guests, employees, partners, and communities. The hotel’s five-year journey reflects the company’s broader vision of developing world-class destinations that combine exceptional service with responsible business practices, meaningful community engagement, and environmental stewardship.

From introducing Bacolod City’s first internationally branded hotel to nurturing a culture of genuine Filipino hospitality, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod stands as a testament to SMHCC’s commitment to shaping destinations that create memorable experiences and enduring positive impact, one meaningful stay, one partnership, and one community at a time.

CCP appoints Carlos Quijon, Jr. as Chief Curator ahead of its Main Building reopening

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the country’s premier institution for arts and culture, announces the appointment of art historian, critic, and curator Carlos Quijon, Jr. as the new Chief Curator of its CCP Contemporary Art Museum.

Carlos Quijon, Jr. the new Chief Curator of CCP Contemporary Art Museum.

Quijon’s vision will shape the way CCP showcases and exhibits its extensive contemporary art collection. This move comes at a crucial time when the CCP is set to reopen its doors to the public by the first quarter of 2027, after going through meticulous conservation and rehabilitation efforts that began in 2021, following a series of inspections in 2015 and 2018.

“As we prepare for the reopening of the CCP next year, we are not only boosting our facilities that will host our audiences and the public, but also our lineup of visionaries who will curate and conceptualize art exhibitions and performances that we can truly be proud of. We’re glad to welcome Carlos into our artistic family. We know that we will learn from his global experiences, as much as he will also be inspired by our contemporary art collection,” said CCP President  Kaye C. Tinga.

A Filipino talent with a global portfolio, Quijon joins CCP after a successful tenure at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as the inaugural C-MAP Fellow for Southeast and East Asia. He has notably curated the Philippine Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, where he presented the work of artist Mark Salvatus. He has also curated exhibitions in São Paulo, New York, Seoul, Busan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila, and participated in residencies and fellowships in museums in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Quijon brings in an extensive knowledge of Southeast Asia’s modern and contemporary art, transregional art histories, curatorial practice and scholarship, and a keen familiarity with regional artistic infrastructures and ecosystems. “I’m excited to join the CCP as their new chief curator as it enters its new era. As a practitioner, I believe in CCP’s role in advocating for and enriching the artistic sensibilities of our Filipino artists and promoting them to our local public and our international audiences, as well. The goal is to strengthen the place of the CCP in national and regional conversations around contemporary art,” Quijon said.

CCP is home to one of the country’s largest contemporary art collections, which it has gathered from the 1960s to the 1980s. There are over 2,000 artworks in its CCP 21AM Visual Arts Collection alone. Beyond the Label: Why the Future of Filipino Fashion Begins with Purpose

For years, fashion has been driven by what’s next. New collections arrive at an increasingly rapid pace, trends change overnight, and consumers are encouraged to constantly refresh their wardrobes.

Today, however, a different conversation is beginning to emerge. Around the world, consumers are becoming more intentional about the clothes they buy. They’re asking not only how a garment looks, but how it was made, who made it, how long it will last, and whether it deserves a place in their wardrobe beyond a single season.

This shift has fueled growing interest in craftsmanship, timeless design, and independent brands that prioritize quality over quantity. It reflects a broader movement toward buying fewer pieces, but choosing them more thoughtfully.

For Jaycee Dioneza, Creative Director of premium Filipino fashion label orangedot, this changing mindset presents an opportunity for Filipino designers to redefine what local fashion represents.

Instead of competing through trend cycles or mass production, he believes the future lies in creating garments with intention, authenticity, and lasting value.

“People are becoming more thoughtful about what they wear,” Dioneza says. “They’re beginning to appreciate the story behind a garment, the craftsmanship that went into making it, and the intention behind every design decision.”

Redefining Luxury

For decades, luxury has been associated with heritage brands, exclusivity, and recognizable logos.

Today, however, the definition is evolving. Among a new generation of designers and consumers alike, luxury is increasingly measured not by status, but by craftsmanship. It is reflected in the precision of a pattern, the quality of a seam, the durability of a garment, and the confidence that comes from wearing something thoughtfully made rather than quickly produced.

For Dioneza, this evolution represents an opportunity for Filipino fashion to define its own identity rather than imitate established fashion capitals.

“We don’t need to compete by trying to be someone else,” he says. “Our strength lies in our craftsmanship, our creativity, and the stories only Filipino designers can tell.

Where Purpose Began

Long before orangedot became a fashion label, Dioneza’s understanding of design was shaped by necessity. Growing up in Baler, Aurora, he spent much of his childhood watching his mother, a seamstress, carefully cut patterns, stitch garments, and transform simple fabric into something people could wear with pride.

Those quiet moments became his earliest lessons in craftsmanship. He learned that good design wasn’t just about creativity. It demanded patience, discipline, technical skill, and respect for the process.

Years later, while studying Operations Management, he found another classroom.

To help support his education, Dioneza began buying ukay-ukay pieces, repairing them, redesigning them, and selling them to classmates and customers looking for something unique. What started as a practical side hustle gradually became an education in fashion.

Working with secondhand garments taught him to understand construction before aesthetics. Every alteration required him to think differently, solve problems creatively, and maximize what was already available. More importantly, it challenged the idea that value comes from something being brand new.

Instead, he discovered that the true value of a garment lies in the craftsmanship, creativity, and thought invested in it. “I realized creativity isn’t about having unlimited resources,” Dioneza says. “It’s about seeing potential where other people don’t.”

That perspective continues to shape the way he designs today. Before sketching silhouettes or selecting fabrics, he begins with a different question:

What purpose will this garment serve, and why should someone choose to keep it?

Designing with Intention

That philosophy became the foundation of orangedot. Rather than responding to fast-moving trends, the brand was built around creating pieces that remain relevant long after trends have passed.

Its debut HIDA Pleated Series, reflects that approach.

Inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, the collection explores precision, structure, and intentional construction—not to replicate another culture’s aesthetic, but to demonstrate how global influences can be interpreted through a distinctly Filipino perspective.

TANTŌ 短刀 – short blade Hida Pleated Series.

“For me, being proudly Filipino isn’t about limiting where we find inspiration,” Dioneza explains. “It’s about learning from different cultures while creating work that reflects our own identity and our own standards of craftsmanship.”

As Filipino designers continue to gain international attention, he believes confidence—not imitation—will define the industry’s next chapter. “We shouldn’t be afraid to learn from the world,” he says. “What’s important is creating something that’s authentically ours.

Beyond Fashion

Although clothing remains at the center of orangedot, Dioneza sees fashion as only one part of a much larger creative ecosystem.

His vision extends beyond collections and retail. One day, he hopes to build a space where fashion, design, art, music, and community naturally come together—a place where emerging creatives can collaborate, exchange ideas, and inspire one another.

YOROI 鎧 – armor Hida Pleated Series.

It reflects the philosophy behind the brand itself. For orangedot, orange represents creative energy, while the dot symbolizes precision, clarity, and purpose. Together, they express the belief that creativity becomes most meaningful when paired with intention.

“I want people to understand that fashion isn’t just about what we wear,” Dioneza says. “It’s about the values we express through what we create. Every garment is an opportunity to tell a story, preserve craftsmanship, and contribute something meaningful.”

Conrad Manila proudly presents the 42nd edition of its signature Of Art and Wine series with Intimate Reflections by Spencer Ozo, currently on exhibit at Gallery C until 26 September 2026. Curated by resident curator Nestor Jardin, the 25-piece exhibition offers a deeply personal exploration of vulnerability, resilience, and the evolving journey of self-understanding.

“Through Intimate Reflections, our very own Spencer Ozo invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys of growth and self-discovery,” said Rupert Hallam, general manager of Conrad Manila. “As a valued member of our team, Spencer embodies our commitment to nurturing an environment where team members are empowered to pursue their passions, unlock their potential, and express their creativity both within and beyond the workplace.”

His artistic journey gained momentum with his first exhibition at Gallery C in 2022, marking the beginning of a growing presence in the local art scene.

In Intimate Reflections, Ozo creates a compelling dialogue between abstract and figurative forms, revealing the intersection between inner consciousness and external experience. His abstract works harness color, texture, and movement to express emotions beyond words, while his figurative pieces ground these sentiments in lived realities and human connections. Together, the collection presents a nuanced visual narrative of personal transformation and self-awareness.

“Art has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of who I am,” shared featured artist Spencer Ozo. “It allows me to navigate personal histories, cultural influences, and emotional truths with honesty and intention. The interplay of light and color throughout my works reflects my belief that clarity and hope can emerge even amidst uncertainty. Through this collection, I hope to encourage reflection and meaningful conversations about identity, growth, and the shared human experience,” he added.

The exhibition opened in the presence of esteemed guests, including Elizabeth Sy, President of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation; Peggy Angeles, Executive Vice President of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation; Rupert Hallam, General Manager of Conrad Manila; and featured artist Spencer Ozo.
