Creating a positive learning environment

Teachers are often seen as a source of inspiration, courage, and hope when it comes to students’ education. But it is often forgotten that parents also play a critical role in the holistic development of a child’s schooling.

In the second part of the “Exploring Parental Engagement Practice in the School” session of the 4th Professional Development Series for Teachers on Parental Engagement, it discussed how both teachers and parents need to work hand-in-hand in identifying the areas for growth, as well as the strengths they need to reinforce in their students.

The webinar was presented by Globe, through its Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) program, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP).

Through the session, the different types of parents were discussed by the educators. If you are a parent, you may even see yourself in the list:

  • Kabute Parent – if you’re this kind of parent, you know that you are sometimes present or absent… just like mushrooms
  • Nega Star Parent – dubbed as “nega” for negative, this one always has alibis and thinks that things aren’t easy as they may seem
  • Bibong Parent – if we have the “nega star,” this one is the opposite. This type is always “positive” and always available
  • Business-minded Parent – it’s the one who always sees opportunities in things and circumstances
  • Lutang Parent – parenting is indeed not an easy task especially if you have a lot of things on your plate so it is understandable that there is this type who always says, “Ay ano nga po ‘yun, Ma’am?” or “Ay nand’yan po pala kayo, Ma’am, ano nga po ang sinasabi niyo?”

Parents experience numerous challenges when it comes to balancing their household priorities, jobs, and volunteering time for their children’s schooling.  A big factor is a time, which could often limit one’s attention and energy in being more involved in their child’s schooling.

That said, it becomes a concern for educators to face parents, most especially if they are experiencing concerns with household expenditures, are overprotective and controlling of their children, exposure to unsafe communities, and lack of awareness of current school systems.

Keeping these challenges in mind, participating teachers were taught how to address the barriers through the 3Cs: Communicate, Collaborate, Create and ENGAGE the parents: E-licit parent’s concerns, N-ever judge, G-ain their trust, A-ctive communication, G-rowth Mindset, and E-mpower.

“The collaboration we have with DepEd helps catalyze the learning community to imbibe technology and new methods of learning to keep abreast of the times,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

She added, “We are glad to share knowledge and widen the perspective of our educators through this program, as we help them establish a better working relationship with parents for their student’s well-being and learning — especially now, as we adjust to a blended learning environment.”

Being a strong advocate of 21st-century learning, Globe has lined up a modified training series under its Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) program that covers digital literacy, parental support on digital learning, responsible online behavior, effective 21st-century approaches to early language literacy, and psychological first aid.

Those interested can access the third and fourth session on Parental Engagement: Building a Strong Culture of Parent-School Partnership on DepEd NEAP’s official page.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 4, which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. Globe is committed to upholding the UN Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs.

Addressing Global Challenges through Openness and Trust in Tech

Shenzhen, China – Huawei TrustInTech Summit 2021 was held online on Thursday, with the theme of “Global Collaboration for Shared Value.”

Leaders from across the globe attended the event, including Neil Bush, Chairman of the George H.W. Bush Foundation for US-China Relations, Pascal Lamy, Former Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), William Nordhaus, Winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics, H.E. Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Economic Community, Derrick Pitts, NASA Solar System Ambassador, and Hou Jinlong, Senior Vice President of Huawei and President of Huawei Digital Power.

Attendees discussed challenges we are facing in the global economy, environmental protection, livelihoods, technology innovation, and many other key areas, and called for concerted efforts from countries and industries to address these challenges.

Humanity has entered an era in which interests, fates, and futures are all closely intertwined. A whole-of-society approach is necessary to address the common threats and challenges facing the global community. Pascal Lamy pointed out that “We need to mitigate de-globalization, in order to avoid making this world a worse place.”

Satvinder Singh, in his speech, spoke highly of the important role of the private sector like Huawei in advancing inclusive and sustainable economic recovery in ASEAN and beyond. He also shared ASEAN’s development achievements and expressed willingness to cooperate across numerous areas, including economy and trade, transportation and materials, digital transformation, high-performance computing, and climate change.

Satvinder Singh called upon all sides to take action. “We should seize this opportunity to make our societal and economic recovery truly transformative by investing in solutions to the crisis that address social, environmental, and economic transitions needed by our society and the planet,” said the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community.

Seeking common ground while setting aside differences and building trust is the way forward. Industry digitalization, particularly regarding technological innovation in areas like green power, will present new opportunities to all sectors worldwide and make the world a better place. Today, fighting climate change is a mission that is shared worldwide, with many countries having announced low-carbon pledges.

Huawei launched Tech Day to Power Digital Philippines

Huawei Philippines held Tech Day 2021 on November 11, aiming to discover how pioneering enterprises are applying innovative ICT technologies to create digital infrastructures for the entry of the intelligent era.

Whilst the pandemic has pushed the pause button, performance varies from company to company, industry to industry, and country to country. One of the keys to thriving is by going digital. According to McKinsey, COVID-19 has caused digital transformation to jump ahead by 7 years globally and by a full 10 years in the Asia Pacific. In the face of an increasingly complex business environment, resilience has become an important development strategy for companies, and digital technology is the key to building this resilience.

Todd Liu, Director of Enterprise Business Department from Huawei Philippines, said during his speech, “ As digital transformation enters a new phase, we will tackle three big changes. First, digital transformation will become central to office work. Second, production will go fully digital. Third, digital technologies will benefit more enterprises. In line with DICT’s national digital transformation strategy, this new phase of digital transformation will create new requirements and challenges to the digital infrastructure, which includes sensing, connectivity, storage, and computing, as well as foundational technologies and software ecosystems. We hope to dive deep with our customers and partners, to explore the Digital Infrastructures that are Powering a Digital Philippines.”

Huawei released the Intelligent World 2030 report early this September, which provides insights into ICT technology and application trends in the next decade, and explains how ICT technologies can solve critical problems and challenges of human development, and what new opportunities can be brought to organizations and individuals. In the report, Huawei predicts that by 2030, global connections will reach 200 billion; and data generated annually will increase by 23 times, reaching one yottabyte for the first time.

In a world where everything is sensed, connected, and intelligent, Huawei will continue to innovate together with partners for the digital transformation journeys. To align with this, Many heavyweight guests were invited to speak at the event. Including Dennis Omila, CIO of UnionBank of the Philippines, he stated that “Union Bank of the Philippines has disrupted the traditional banking channels by re-imagining and re-engineering customer touchpoints.
