The industry-led multistakeholder national consumer cybersecurity campaign is being led by the FinTech Alliance in partnership with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine National Police, Anti-Money Laundering Council, Securities and Exchange Commission, Insurance Commission, National Privacy Commission, National Telecommunications Commission, Department of Trade and Industry, telecommunications companies, consumer groups, and media groups.

BSP Governor Felipe Medalla.

“I am proud to see everyone working hard to make the Nationwide Consumer Cybersecurity Education Campaign an effective and invaluable tool in helping accelerate the Philippines’ Digital Economy. You can count on BSP to be a staunch supporter of our project. We will continue to work hand in hand with all of our stakeholders and ensure the far-reaching impact of this campaign,” said BSP Governor Felipe Medalla.

“With all industry players, government, media, and Filipino consumers working together, we’re ready to unlock the power of cybersecurity with consumer education! We enjoin all FinTech Alliance member companies to have our campaign on all your social media platforms and use the hashtag #WagMagpalokoMagingScamAlerto,” said Lito Villanueva, founding chairman of the Fintech Alliance.PH and RCBC executive vice president and chief innovation and inclusion officer.

Lito Villanueva, founding chairman of the Fintech Alliance. PH.

The massive nationwide multistakeholder cybersecurity education and awareness campaign was launched in response to the emergence of risks and threats to users’ safety and to ensure sustained consumer trust on digital payment platforms. With various organizations coming from the private sector, the government, and the media, FinTech Alliance.PH hopes to combat the rising tide of cybercrime through multiple prongs and engagement strategies.

The leading FinTech organization also jump-started the first cohort of the Cambridge FinTech Regulatory and Innovations (FTRI) Program. The Cambridge FTRI program is by the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge in Southeast Asia in partnership with Mapua University in the Philippines. The program targets the development and training of regulators, legislators, policymakers, practitioners, and professionals in banking, fintech, and digital industries.

The two initiatives by the Alliance were among the key events in their recent General Membership Meeting with the theme, “Accelerating the Philippines’ digital economy and unlocking the power of consumer education on cybersecurity.” At the same event, BSP Governor Medalla gave a keynote speech entitled, “The Current Philippine Digital Landscape: What’s Next Beyond the Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap.”

S&P Global APAC Chief Economist Rajiv Biswas also gave an outlook on the Philippine Economy, highlighting the country’s trajectory towards being a one trillion US dollar economy by 2033.

“We cannot do this as an industry without building a very strong strategic collaboration with regulators that allows an enabling environment for inclusive innovations. From co-developing the National Retail Payments System, National Strategy for Financial Inclusion and other regulations on emerging technologies such as virtual assets, regulatory sandbox, and digital banking, to open finance, and central bank digital currency, among others,” Villanueva added.

New FinTech Alliance corporate members were sworn in by BSP Governor Medalla. From just 15 founding corporate members in 2017 to nearly 100 in 2023.

FinTech Alliance.PH, the Philippines’ premier, and largest digital and fintech association, is composed of startups and unicorns that account for over 95 percent of digital-initiated transaction volume in the country.

The program will bring together 120 outstanding students from 16 countries across the Asia Pacific region for a 9-day digital boot camp in Thailand, including 10 students from the Philippines. From August 19 to 27, ten Filipino delegates who are ready to demonstrate their talent and abilities will join the journey this year.

The opening ceremony was attended by both local government officials and representatives of multiple international organizations. They highlighted multi-party collaboration’s important role in creating a solid foundation for the region’s digital talent ecosystem.

Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi stressed that digital talent will be the driving force in the construction of a Digital ASEAN: “The private sector can play a pioneering role in realizing this vision. In this regard, I commend Huawei Asia Pacific’s initiative: Seeds for the Future Program. This project underscores the long-term commitment of Huawei to collaborate and prepare the ASEAN youth for the changing world of work and industry demands. I hope that such efforts could also be extended to the other ASEAN Member States.”

Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation, Dr. Ms. Yang Mee Eng said: “The growth of ASEAN Digital Economy is entirely dependent on the capability of the region’s young people to participate in it. To nurture a generation of digitally savvy and innovative problem solvers, it is pivotal for stakeholders of ASEAN to create a robust learning ecosystem that allows our youth to advance their digital skills.”

Director for the ICT Industry Development Bureau of DICT in the Philippines, Ms. Emmy Lou V. Delfin delivered her message, “Thank you to Huawei for this partnership with the DICT in developing Filipino youth to become entrepreneurs through ICT. Huawei Seeds for the Future program is so timely and relevant especially for our college students. Getting the right skills and training builds for a brighter future. Just as your tagline says – inspiring talents to shape the future.”

The participants will get immersed in technologies and cross-cultural experiences, and propose technical solutions to address social problems through Tech4Good projects. 56 of the 120 participants this year are women, making the 2022 cohort the most gender-balanced in the region since the program was initiated.

Asia Pacific Seeds for the future 2022 is not only about knowledge learning but also about how to transform ideas into initiatives and projects that will provide a decent, quality, and happy life for all. Deputy Minister of Education of Thailand Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich agreed that “The Seeds for the Future program is important for students interested in ICT and digital technologies as it fills the gap between theory and practice. The Ministry of Education envisions a greater focus on morals and ethics, whereas education should also emphasize digital skills. This is regarded as the most significant development in the Thai education sector; boosting the quality of education, in all forms, to advance education to a global level.”

President of Huawei Asia Pacific Mr. Simon Lin reiterated Huawei’s commitment to talent development: “The ‘seeds’ represent hope, passion, and future. As the corporate-level flagship CSR project with the longest history, this program has been brought to nearly 140 countries and regions, reaching over 12,000 students from 500 universities. The ‘Seeds’ have grown to a global ‘forest’.” “Digitalization is the driving force for our future. Talent is the key to digital transformation and sustainable growth. We deeply believe that the young generation will grow as the constructors of Asia Pacific when pursuing their tech dreams,” Simon Lin added.
The opening ceremony ended with 16 Seeds representatives performing the song “Dream it Possible” together in their languages.

From today, they would embark on a cultural and digital journey filled with site visits including the United Nations Regional Hub in Bangkok, the Metaverse Expo, and the Grand Palace in Bangkok. At the same time, the participants will be provided training in cutting-edge technologies like 5G, AI, and cloud computing from industry-leading experts.
During the digital camp, the participants will be expected to team up and create a “Tech4Good” pitch where they will share their visions for a better digital world. The winning teams will be given a place in an accelerator camp in Singapore that will be held from August 29 to September 4. This camp will allow them to meet top-notch entrepreneurs and investors and further develop their initiatives and bring their ideas to the market.

Seeds for the Future is Huawei’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility program that brings together young talent from top universities around the world. Huawei Philippines launched the program in 2015 to inspire ICT talent and encourage them to tackle social challenges with digital solutions. As of the end of 2021, the program had been reaching over 200 students from over 30 universities in the country.

Huawei: Digital Innovation Never Stop for a Greener Intelligent World

Shenzhen, China –  Huawei plans to boost investment in innovation to build new products and to enhance and accelerate new technologies. The company held its 19th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen from April 26 to 27.

For more than 30 years, Huawei has been innovating nonstop to create value for our customers and society. Innovation has become a core part of Huawei’s DNA. Despite considerable operational challenges over the past few years, we have continued to steadily increase our investment in R&D. For nearly a decade, our strategy has been to re-invest at least 10% of our annual revenue back into R&D. Last year, we invested 22%. Huawei’s Rotating Chairman Ken Hu said during the event.

He went on to discuss the specific initiatives that Huawei is working on to realize its vision for the future. “We are currently focusing on three areas: strengthening our approach to innovation, equipping all industries with the tools and knowledge they need to go digital, and helping build a low-carbon world.”

According to him, Huawei sees two major trends: all industries are going digital, and the world is setting its sights on low-carbon development. “Needless to say, no organizations these days are asking themselves whether or not they ought to go digital. They’re more concerned about how to go digital and how to do it well.” Said Hu.

In Huawei’s view, the ICT and finance industries were first-movers, so their transformation goes deep – down to their core production systems. Industries like electric power, fuel, and manufacturing are using digital technology to solve production challenges, whereas the digital journey of industries like real estate, construction, and agriculture has only just begun. Because these industries are at different stages of the transformation process, they naturally have different concerns.

For the past 10 years, we’ve been going through our digital transformation. We’ve gained a lot of valuable experience along the way, Hu said.

Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. “We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society,” said Ken Hu. “We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener intelligent world.”

Huawei: Attracting world-class talent with world-class challenges

Shenzhen, China — Huawei kicked off its 19th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen. Huawei’s Rotating Chairman Ken Hu said that the company will continue to boost investment in innovation to build new products and enhance and accelerate new technologies.

“At Huawei, when we talk about innovation, the first thing we think is people. We hope to attract world-class talent with world-class challenges, and work together to push the limits of science and technology,” said Hu, referring to the Top Minds recruitment program that the company launched on its website.

“We don’t care where you’re from, where you graduated, or what you studied,” he continued. “As long as you have a dream for the future and believe you can make it happen, we want you to come and join us. We provide world-class challenges, a powerful platform, and all the resources you need to explore the unknown.”

Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. “We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society,” said Ken Hu. “We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener intelligent world.”

Dr. Zhou Hong, President of Huawei’s Institute of Strategic Research, said that “everything we imagine today is very likely to be too conservative – too little – for tomorrow. We have to meet the future with bold hypotheses and a bold vision, and throw caution to the wind as we push to break through bottlenecks in theory and technology. This is the only way forward.” He outlined ten challenges that Huawei hopes to address moving forward.

Two scientific questions:

  •  How do machines perceive the world, and can we build models that teach machines how to understand the world?
  • How can we better understand the physiological mechanisms of the human body, including how the eight systems of the bodywork, as well as human intent and intelligence?

Eight tech challenges:

  •  New sensing and control capabilities, e.g., brain-computer interfaces, muscle-computer interfaces, 3D displays, virtual touch, virtual smell, and virtual taste
  • Real-time, unobtrusive blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart monitoring, and strong AI-assisted discoveries in chemical pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and vaccines
  • Application-centric, efficient, automated, and intelligent software for greater value and a better experience
  • Reaching and circumventing Shannon’s limit to enable efficient, high-performance connectivity both regionally and globally
  • Adaptive and efficient computing models, non-Von Neumann architectures, unconventional components, and explainable and debuggable AI
  • Inventing new molecules, catalysts, and components with intelligent computing
  • Developing new processes that surpass CMOS, cost less, and are more efficient
  • Safe, efficient energy conversion and storage, as well as on-demand services

Huawei said, most Asia Pacific countries have very clear and forward-looking digital strategies. As the Asia Pacific region goes digital, a skilled ICT workforce will be critical. The region has a unique advantage in this area because it has a younger population than the US or Europe. Accelerating the development of ICT talent in the region will require concerted efforts from governments, businesses, and people from all walks of life.

In the Philippines, Huawei also had several programs for cultivating the local ICT talents, such as ICT Academy, and Seeds for the Future, which covered the Philippines for years, and benefited over 9000 ICT students, according to Daniel Guo, the Vice President of Huawei Philippines.

Spread happiness

The last few weeks have seen Filipinos easing into the new normal, with COVID-19 cases on a steady decline. Workers are back in their offices. Families are free to go out for weekend lunches. Friends are reuniting in sorely missed night-outs. People are walking their dogs in parks.

Even with masks still, on when they go out, there is no denying the smiles on Filipinos’ faces as they experience, for the first time in two years, a sense of normalcy after the challenging and limiting times of the pandemic.

As we mark International Happiness Day somehow free from the shroud of a prolonged pandemic, the Globe Group is here to help Filipinos spread cheer even better. How? Here are just a few ways.

  • Send a surprise cash gift or pasaload via GCash

Maybe you want to cheer up a friend or sibling with a prepaid load or some cash for a milk tea treat or a special snack. You can do this without hassle via GCash. To send load, open your GCash app, click the “Buy Load” icon, select the network of your recipient, and in the space “Buy Load For,” type the number to whom you wish to send load.

To send cash, just tap “Send Money,” click on Express Send, and type in the recipient’s number. Make sure the person you wish to send cash to also has the GCash app on his phone. Otherwise, you may go another route and send money via bank transfer, which requires the recipient’s bank details.

  • Share happiness to the needy by donating your Globe Rewards points to Globe of Good

If you’ve been a Globe user for quite a while, chances are you have been accumulating rewards points, and some of them may be expiring by March 31. With those points, you can send help to those in need through Globe of Good, a platform that aims to harness technology to create social impact.

Through Globe of Good, you can support family feeding activities, micro-entrepreneurship training and vocational courses, microfinancing for startups, and job opportunities for skilled workers.

If you wish to use your rewards for this cause, just go to the Rewards section of the New GlobeOne app, click the “DONATE” icon, choose Globe of Good and the corresponding denomination, then press “REDEEM.” Every successful donation is confirmed through a message sent to your mobile number via 4438.

  • Send doctor consultations to loved ones via KonsultaMD

Did you know that you can purchase doctor consultation slots for loved ones through KonsultaMD? The telehealth platform, which saw a stellar rise during the pandemic, provides an option for users to “Give the Gift of Health.”

To do this, download the KonsultaMD app if you haven’t yet. Register as a user, and upon reaching your profile page, you’ll find the “Give the Gift of Health” banner with the button to “Buy Now.” Once you click, you’ll be led to a page that gives you options to purchase a Fast Pass video consult or a Mental Health Support video consult.

Upskilling online scholars via digital citizenship, WiFi 101 lessons

Globe, through Globe University, is providing scholars of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority’s (TESDA) Online Program (TOP) with relevant content on the basics of WiFi and digital citizenship.

The collaboration aims to help students upskill and develop competencies essential to keep up with drastic changes in today’s world– a goal aligned with Globe University’s aim of upgrading the skills of the company’s 8,000-strong workforce. Through the university, Globe employees have been able to access learning materials online since the start of the pandemic.

In line with its vision to become a digital solutions group within the next three years, Globe encourages the use of technology and online platforms to enrich Filipinos’ life experiences.  It shares TESDA’s vision to make its services on tech-voc training more accessible through technology-based initiatives.

“At this time when online learning plays an integral part in Filipinos’ lives, there is great value in understanding how connectivity works and how our citizens can protect themselves online. With this partnership with TESDA, we believe that our learning modules can help our fellow Filipinos better leverage connectivity in their daily lives as well as objectively discern information they come across on social media,” said Berns Bernardo, Head of Globe University.

The latest Labor Force Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority shows a 6.5% unemployment rate in November 2021. While the figure was the lowest since the height of the pandemic, it is still a major labor gap at 3.16 million unemployed.

This situation underscores the importance of providing employment support for those without work or people with jobs but do not fit their qualifications.

TOP fills this need by providing free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for Filipino workers’ technical education and skills development. Being on a web platform, the courses are also an effective and efficient way to deliver tech-voc education and training in the learner’s own space and time.

TOP scholars will have access to modules that tackle factors that affect Wi-Fi connection at home, and simple troubleshooting that can be done to optimize their experience. WiFi 101 is among topics covered under TESDA’s broadband installation course to help trainees learn WiFi fundamentals.

They can also access Globe’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), which has modules designed to train learners, parents, and educators on digital citizenship, online safety, and responsible Internet use.

From the onset of the pandemic to date, there are already 3.2 million registrants on TOP.

Interested parties can register online through the TOP website at https://e-tesda.gov.ph.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 4, which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. It also supports UN SDG 9 which aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. Globe harnesses technology to boost employee care amid pandemic

True to its acclaim as the Best Workplace in Asia, Globe continues to enhance its employee care initiatives by leveraging innovative technology for more efficient program delivery as pandemic restrictions remain.

“Especially at this time of a prolonged health crisis coupled with the recent Omicron surge, Globe has made it a point to keep listening to its employees and ensure their safety and good health through digital interventions that are easy-to-use, responsive, and reliable,” said Ato Jiao, Globe Chief Human Resource Officer.

“We know full well that our workforce’s overall well-being must be prioritized so we can continue to deliver the best service and connectivity experience to our customers,” he added.

Best Workplace

Globe was named Best Workplace of the Year at the 2021 Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards (ACES), particularly for its focus on enabling and empowering its employees.

Aside from holistic COVID-19 support packages, expanded medical coverage, post-COVID care therapy sessions, and employee engagement sessions, Globe has keyed in on innovative technologies and applications that have helped employees adjust easily to new ways of working.

These include chatbots such as the Digital Usher for Disasters and Emergencies or DUDE, which serves as an official COVID-19 health monitor where employees may report symptoms and receive immediate assistance from a dedicated COVID-19 response team.

DUDE also serves as wellness and mental health channel, providing daily health check-ins and safety reminders. It also connects employees to Hopechat, Globe’s virtual counseling service.

Yet another initiative is Wanda, a recognition chatbot that enables employees to send special e-cards to each other, a gesture that helps foster Globe’s culture of recognition even while working apart.

More recently, the company also launched the Employee Virtual Assistant or EVA, an AI-powered chatbot that can answer employees’ HR-related questions. For more complex requests or inquiries, EVA also serves as a portal for raising tickets to the HR department.

The use of chatbots and other technologies has helped boost the daily experience of employees. Herl Ramos, a User Experience Design Manager, shares: “Our chatbots have helped us employees in so many ways. With the pandemic situation, DUDE has assured that Globe is there to take care of them in case something happens.”

Over the past year, Globe adopted a multi-faceted approach to active employee engagement, relying on more digital tools due to limitations brought about by the new work environment. These include virtual learning and fitness sessions, talk shows, educational webinars, and podcasts.

Through these health and wellness initiatives, Globe reinforces its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG No. 3, which aims for good health and well-being for all. The company also supports the UN Global Compact principles and contributes to 10 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
