The Gonzaga Sisters sing praises of water for health and beauty

A lot of money is spent on cosmetics, facelifts, and other so-called beauty solutions to achieve young skin and a smooth, glowing complexion. The same goes for fitness products, supplements, gym fees, and equipment to possess a fit, healthy and ageless body.

But did you know that the simple, often costless solution to all those must-haves is just right under our noses? The answer is water.

If your skin is dry, dull, and prone to getting wrinkles, maybe you’re just not drinking enough water. Besides changing weather conditions and environmental irritants, not drinking enough water can give you a dry complexion.

As we grow older, the skin slows its production of the substances that keep our faces hydrated. Hydration becomes more and more important to keep skin elastic and wrinkle-free. Hydrated skin does look more plump, healthy, and youthful-looking. And here’s the thing. Hydration also keeps skin from being oily. Did you know that dehydrated skin produces more oil to compensate for the lack of inner moisture?

When it comes to health and fitness, water is the perfect solution as well. Water maintains our digestive, heart, and lung functions help lubricate our joints, protects our tissues, regulates our body temperature and so much more.

Contrary to common impressions, drinking more water will reduce bloat and flush out toxins, minimizing the harmful results of salty foods and snacks.

Some studies say water also helps with weight loss. Drinking a glass of water before a meal can help decrease appetite, help with portion control, aid in food digestion, and boost metabolism. If water is consumed instead of high-calorie drinks, it reduces calorie intake as well.

So how much water should you drink? Experts say eight glasses or two liters per day. But water requirements may differ based on age, environment, and activity levels. The more active you are, the more water you should drink.

The Gonzaga Sisters, Toni, and Alex are certified water buffs, the reason why they were selected by Nature’s Spring Water to be their official icons. Alex takes two liters of water per day while Toni is meticulous about the water she drinks, making sure it’s always bottled water she’s taking “because it’s safe, it’s sealed and you can trust it”.

Toni Gonzaga

“I didn’t believe in hydration before, but now I do. I know how water flushes out all the toxins in your body that you get from whatever you eat or drink. I always feel good after drinking water. And I also drink water to lose weight. It helps me to stay regular and I noticed that my “puson” (belly) is trimmer when I take water instead of juices and sugary drinks,” says Alex.

“When you drink water, you’re moisturizing your body and your inner beauty. Your cells are given more life, and this helps you glow. When you’re clean from within, you glow,” adds Toni.

Alex Gonzaga

A new lease on life for Batangas entrepreneurs

Batangas has long hung its hat on its delectable foods and popular tourist hubs. From diving spots in Lian and Laiya to the well-known Taal Volcano to beloved dishes like Batangas Goto, these and so much more produced an environment where businesses—big and small—flourished.

All that changed, though, when the COVID-19 pandemic came and ravaged homes, lives, and businesses all around the world. With quarantine protocols, physical distancing, and travel restrictions hindering movement across Luzon, small business owners like Oliver Marasigan, proprietor of the “Original Batangas Goto” almost felt the pinch.

And persevere Marasigan did as he quickly transitioned his business online. However, he soon found out that the online realm presented entirely new challenges. One, in particular, gave him fits: the slow 3G Internet connection. This kept him from uploading pictures of his delectable goto dishes and getting orders from avid customers.

Monette Gusi, the Acuatico Beach Resort general manager, also shared Marasigan’s frustrations concerning sluggish Internet speeds.

Ang resulta, walang bisita,” she said.

A major reason for poor internet connection is the use of 3G SIM which relies on old mobile technology.  3G is already considered obsolete and is being replaced by newer and faster 4G LTE all over the world.

Fortunately, things took a turn for the better when Globe upgraded cell towers in Batangas and nearby regions. With 4G LTE in Batangas, internet speeds in the area have vastly improved, which has led to better connectivity. This helped businesses come to life in the new normal.

“4G! 4-GOTO! Ayos! Taob na naman ang kaldero ng gotohan ko! Hindi na ako problemado sa bayaran ng tuition, bayaran sa kuryente’t tubig at matutustusan na ang pangangailangan namin!” gleefully said Marasigan.

With a faster and more stable Internet connection, tourist arrivals in Batangas have also picked up.

“Dahil sa 4G at mabilis na interconnection, dagsa ang mga booking queries. Nakita ng mga staff ko ang pag-asa na hindi kami magsasara dahil ang bisita sunud-sunod. Napakalaki ng epekto sa negosyo ng internet connection. Necessity na,” shared Gusi.

To fully experience the benefits of 4G LTE, Globe subscribers only need to have their old 3G SIM cards replaced with the 5G-ready 4G LTE SIMs and upgrade their mobile devices to 4G LTE capable ones. If quarantine protocols in their respective areas allow, customers can go to the nearest Globe Store to change their SIM cards for free.

Globe customers in San Juan, Batangas can upgrade their old 3G SIM cards to 5G-ready 4G LTE for free at the following stores:

  • Vergara’s Store, Brgy. Calublub
  • 3M Sister, Brgy. Calublub 2
  • Bernadette Store, Brgy. Subukin
  • Crismar Store, Brgy. Laiya Ibabao
  • Prince Store, Brgy. Palahanan II
  • Arg Store, Brgy. Maraykit
  • Lyn Store, Brgy. Quipot

“We care for our customers that’s why we are doing everything we can to make their experience better.   We are working double-time to bring connectivity to where it’s needed the most, to areas where a strong, reliable, and accessible internet will make the difference between survival or further hardships. We don’t want anyone to be left behind,” said Joel Agustin, Globe Senior Vice President for Program Delivery, Network Technical Group.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) particularly UN SDG No. 9 that highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

Art News This Week

Featuring the exhibitions “Ovacion,” a homage to the Master Sanso, only losers left alive (love songs for the end of the world), and In Celebration of Creativity: A Homage to Junyee.

  • “Ovación,” a Homage to the Master Sansó

Online exclusive: July 3-18, 2021

“Ovación” is an exhibition that primarily centers around the idea of life and time of an older and more renowned artist as imagined by another. The participating artists aim to depict Sansó’s legacy and importance in the current context; simultaneously, the exhibition is meant to reflect on how an artist is influenced or shaped in his own time, and how ideas, thoughts, and inspiration flow continually from predecessors to the younger generation.

The exhibition pays tribute to the artist whom all have admired throughout the years. With great respect and reverence, Barbara Angeles, Joy Calanasan, Katrina Cuenca, Patrick Esmao, Ciara Fabie, and Perfecto Palero will showcase selected works that are in keeping with drawing inspiration from the original vision of the master, Juvenal Sansó.

Nightshade I by Patrick Esmao, 12×12 inches mixed media on canvas.

For “Ovación”, the participating artists hope to portray the master Sansó as each individual knew him: monumental in his importance in the art world, philosophical, and bearing witness to the unwinding of time by his careful and detailed observation of seascapes, landscapes, and flowers. The works focus on techniques and palettes that Sansó used in his oeuvre, with each artist’s unique take of the master’s approach.

  • only losers left alive (love songs for the end of the world)

Exhibition dates: July 10-31, 2021 (part 1)

This group exhibition is a two-part project with a central proposition: if our world were to come to a screeching halt tomorrow, what would we be left with?

only losers left alive (love songs for the end of the world) features a roster of local and locally-based artists. It takes its visual and conceptual cues from cinema, featuring tableaux populated by objects, images, and sounds that evoke the moods of science fiction. It draws inspiration from films, such as La Jetée (1962), Brazil (1985), and 12 Monkeys (1995), that envision disaster and/or dystopia, but filters that vision through the nostalgic aesthetics of the past.

Providing the real-world context for the mood of despondency is, of course, the current pandemic, and the climate of fear, uncertainty, and paranoia in which the global population has been mired. With that backdrop in mind, only losers left alive (love songs for the end of the world) offer an oneiric vision of a calamity to come, understood through the memory of a yesterday that is mourned, lamented, grieved for.

Part one of the show takes place from July 10 to July 31 and features the work of Chok Si Xuan, Mark Chua & Lam Li Shuen, Hamkah Latib, Victoria Hertel, the collective Paradise Now, Sarah Isabelle Tan, Brandon Tay, and XUE. Works range from site-specific installations to video, to sound pieces that function as a soundtrack for space.

While only losers left alive (love songs for the end of the world) transitions from the first part to the second, two iterations of a performance by XUE, in collaboration with musician Rudi Osman, will happen on 3 August and 4 August, 7.30 pm at Yeo Workshop. The second half of the exhibition, which opens in August, will feature the work of Mark Chua & Lam Li Shuen, Victoria Hertel, Georgette Goh, Geraldine Lim, Masuri Mazlan, Sarah Isabelle Tan, Juria Toramae, and Samuel Xun.

Now, both the artist himself and his striking breadth of work are honored in our exhibition, which will comprise more than 80 renowned artists and the entire gallery.

A sunshiny career for Sunshine Dizon

“Whatever I do, I always give my best,” she related from a previous interview, “because not everyone is given a chance to be in showbiz.”

With her recent transfer to Kapamilya Channel (after a 25-year stay with rival GMA-7), veteran actress Sunshine Dizon is determined to stay and excel further in show business. She is set to star in the upcoming teleserye Marry Me, Marry You alongside thespians Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez.

True to her name, Sunshine, in-person exudes a sunshiny disposition. She likewise, sounds very positive about her future. Having spent her early years in show business, Sunshine has acquired the look and attitude of a veteran. “Whatever I do, I always give my best,” she related from a previous interview, “because not everyone is given a chance to be in showbiz.”

An early entry in showbiz

Sunshine had an easy entry into show business because her mom Dorothy was a movie producer. As early as when she was three years old, her mom’s showbiz colleagues had convinced her to include Sunshine in the picture God’s Little Children, her first movie project. Her mom agreed for Sunshine to try her luck in showbiz.

Her mom didn’t go wrong because at a very young age Sunshine has made a mark in the industry. At 12, she bagged the much-coveted Best Child Actress Award from FAMAS. At 13, she became a favorite endorser in commercials. She is hopeful one day she might be able to achieve the status of her idols, Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, and her all-time favorite American actress, Jodie Foster.

Acting-wise, Sunshine shared that she has matured through time. “All the films and shows that I did were all learning experiences.” She is best remembered for her outstanding portrayals in past TV series Ika-6 na Utos, Magkaagaw, Encantadia, and many more to mention.

Fondest childhood memory

Her fondest childhood memory was her trip back to the country from the United States when she failed to bring home with her the giant stuffed toy bear she purchased. “The flight attendants didn’t permit me to carry it on the plane. I threw tantrums. I told them that I would call 911 for child abuse. When I remember that incident, I just realized how stubborn I had been,” recalled the 37-year-old actress.

In private, Sunshine is a homebody and a bookworm. “Magala ang mga mata ko,” she said. “I’m the kind of person who will think a hundred times before I do something. Kaya siguro madalas sumakit ang ulo ko.”

Supportive family

What she values most in life is her family. “Because not everyone can have a family like the one I have, they’re always there for me and they are very supportive of my showbiz career. In the intriguing world of show business, they keep me sane.”

Sunshine is the youngest in a brood of three. She is very close to her other siblings, Richard and Chowtie; and to her mom Dorothy and dad Isagani.

Now that she’s a parent herself, she makes sure to always spend quality time with her two children. It has been an open book about how her past marriage turned out, but despite the chaos and drama, she maintains a good relationship with her estranged husband Timothy Tan for the sake of their children.

Both in reel and real life, Sunshine continues to shine and sounds very optimistic about what the future holds her.

“7,000 Islands” limited edition launched

An Italian modern art portfolio pays homage to the Philippines.

The “7,000 Islands” art portfolio, printed by the famed Rome-based Bulla printing studio in limited 25 numbered copies, with the participation of Italian modern artists, is initiated by Italian Ambassador Giorgio Guglielmino to cap his four-year stint in the country and pay homage to its remarkable culture and resilience.

The portfolio features artworks of Italian contemporary artists: Micol Assael, Ra Di Martino, and Nunzio who freely interpreted the theme of “island” as a physical and metaphorical place and a cultural tribute to the country of more than 7,000 islands. Ambassador Guglielmino together with Department of Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat wrote the texts accompanying the artworks of the three Italian artists.

7000 Islands Portfolio

“The prints were made with the highest professionalism and sincere participation on the part of the Italian artists from the point of view of what ‘7,000 islands’ represents. From my perspective, it is a concrete sign of how culture brings two countries like Italy and the Philippines closer,” Ambassador Guglielmino stated.

“In the printing process, I involved the Bulla printing studio, one of the most prestigious artistic printing companies in the world, based in Rome. The Bulla printing studio was born 210 years ago and has always remained in the ownership of the same family. It is currently managed by the seventh generation of printers, “he added.

The recipients of the 25 works were given to key government officials and individuals who were instrumental in strengthening relations between Italy and the country.

The portfolio was delivered to the Foreign Minister of Italy Luigi Di Maio and Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, and Secretary Romulo-Puyat who also contributed to the portfolio initiative.

Most of the copies were delivered individually to 15 Filipino personalities who over the last few years have helped to strengthen the cultural, commercial, and convivial ties between Italy and the Philippines. Among them was President of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila Tina Colayco who was instrumental in the presentation of the great exhibition “Arte Povera, Italian landscape” inaugurated in February 2020.

Margarita Fores receiving the 7,000 Islands Portfolio.

Recipients of the portfolio include Margarita Fores who has constantly enhanced and promoted Italian cuisine in her restaurants and through television broadcasts;  Ben Chan and Florence Ko for the importation of the best brands of Italian furniture design by their firms; Nedy Tantoco for the Italian fashion brands at Rustan’s; and Boots Herrera of the Ateneo Art Gallery for the creation of the “Embassy of Italy Award” which recognized Silvana Diaz for her contribution to visual arts through “Galleria 2000 “.

The “7,000 Islands” limited-edition portfolio is Ambassador Guglielmino’s parting gift to the country for the warmth and hospitality of its people and shows his love and passion for the country and his appreciation of modern art.
