The Psychology Behind the Confidence Economy: Why Feeling Like Yourself Again Matters More Than Looking Like Someone Else

For decades, investing in yourself followed a familiar formula. People pursued higher education to advance their careers, exercised to improve their health, and invested in personal development to strengthen their skills. As conversations around wellness evolved, mental health, emotional resilience, and work-life balance also became essential parts of personal growth. According to Dr. James Co, another form of self-investment is quietly joining that conversation: Confidence.

After years of treating patients and training aesthetic practitioners across Southeast Asia and Europe, Co has witnessed this shift from an unexpected place: the consultation room.

Drawing from years of patient consultations, Co describes this emerging mindset as the Confidence Economy, a framework that explains why confidence has become one of today’s most valuable forms of self-investment.

“The phrase isn’t about beauty or aesthetics,” he explained. “It’s about understanding why people invest in themselves. At the heart of many of those decisions is the desire to become more confident, not because they want to become someone else, but because they want to become more comfortable being themselves.”

Modern life has made confidence more visible than ever. More than a personality trait, confidence has become a life skill that influences careers, relationships, and everyday interactions.

The Psychology Behind Confidence

Decades of psychological research support the relationship between self-perception and confidence. Psychologist Daryl Bem’s Self-Perception Theorysuggests people develop beliefs about themselves through their own actions and experiences, while later studies on Enclothed Cognition found that self-perception influences behaviour and psychological well-being. Research examining aesthetic medicine has likewise reported improvements in patient-reported self-esteem, body image, and quality of life following appropriately selected treatments, while emphasizing the importance of ethical practice, realistic expectations, and careful patient selection.

For Co, these findings reinforce what years of listening to patients have already taught him.

“The greatest compliment I receive isn’t when someone tells me they look younger,” Co said. “One of the moments that stayed with me involved a patient who returned a few months after her facial harmony treatment,” Co said. “She told me she finally felt confident enough to audition as the lead singer of a band, and she even came back to the clinic and sang for us. That wasn’t about the treatment itself. It was about removing something that had been holding her back. Moments like that remind me the conversation has never been only about appearance.”

That philosophy has defined Co’s approach throughout his career and earned him recognition as the Architect of Aesthetic Confidence. His approach to aesthetic medicine has also earned industry recognition, most recently at the Merz Aesthetics Tala Awards, where he received two awards at the recently held ceremony.

Rather than focusing solely on technical outcomes, he advocates consultation-led aesthetic medicine that begins with understanding a patient’s goals, lifestyle, and motivations before discussing treatment options. Every recommendation, he believes, should support long-term well-being rather than respond to trends.

For Co, this is where the idea of the Confidence Economy becomes most relevant. It is not limited to aesthetic medicine. Whether people invest through education, therapy, fitness, leadership development, communication training, or aesthetic care, they are often pursuing the same outcome: becoming more confident and more willing to engage fully with life.

The Future of the Confidence Economy

As more Filipinos continue investing in their personal growth, conversations around self-investment are also changing. Success is no longer measured only by educational achievements, professional milestones, or financial security. Increasingly, it is also measured by how confidently people engage with the opportunities, relationships, and experiences that give life meaning.

Cosma Institute facade.

For Co, that shift represents the real significance of the Confidence Economy. It reframes confidence not as a luxury or a personality trait, but as an essential part of overall well-being and personal growth. It is also the philosophy that guides every consultation at Cosma Institute, where understanding the person always comes before discussing the procedure.

“Looking better was never the goal,” Co said. “Feeling better was.” Because in the end, the greatest investment people make is not in changing who they are. It is in becoming comfortable enough with themselves to fully participate in the life they want to live.

For Any Kind of Stay Guests Need, There’s Always Richmonde Hotel Ortigas

Travelers today rarely fit into just one category. A family may be looking for a quick city escape, and a professional may need to combine work with a little downtime, while one guest may be staying longer to make the most of a business trip and another may require a stay that accommodates their faith, cultural needs, wellness requirements, or sustainable choices.

As one of the first hotels that opened in Ortigas Center more than 27 years ago, Richmonde Hotel Ortigas (RHO) has been catering to the needs of the visitors of this continuously growing corporate and commercial district. The 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival awarded the prestigious Balanghai trophy for Best Film to “Mag-iina,” a psychological horror that follows three generations of women bound by grief, madness, and a dark family secret.

Directed by Giancarlo Abrahan and Guelan Varela Luarca, “Mag-iina” was cited for “pushing the boundaries of filmmaking; for its layered narrative, unraveling dark family secrets, deep-seated grief, and a matriarchal dynamic that subtly exposes broader truths about Philippine society and politics; for its exceptional technical artistry; for the commanding performances from its predominantly female cast; and for its bold, fearless, and visionary filmmaking.”

Meanwhile, Rey Anthony Villaverde’s “Silkscreen” won Best Film in the Short Film Category for “its textured cinematography, precise color grading, and meticulous sound design; for brilliantly capturing the tangible, tactile world of a fading craft; for its emotionally resonant story of legacy and reconciliation, beautifully balancing the silent tension and tender affection between a struggling son and his aging father as they navigate time, family, and changing times.”

Best Director Balanghai trophies go to filmmakers Giancarlo Abrahan and Gabriela Serrano. For his film “Mag-iina,” director Abrahan has shown “his fearless and visionary filmmaking; for effectively orchestrating cinema’s technical resources into a richly layered family drama reflecting broader Philippine socio-political realities; for his bold, boundary-pushing choices and command of atmosphere; and for drawing out transcendent, deeply resonant performances to construct a haunting cinematic masterpiece.”

Director Serrano, on the other hand, takes home her Balanghai trophy for ELENITA ELENA ELAINE for “seamlessly harmonizing every technical element to craft a powerful, visually mesmerizing story of women struggling to live out their dreams amidst heartbreak and failure; and for guiding her exceptional female cast to deliver profoundly nuanced, authentic performances that radiate raw vulnerability, elevating a dreamless Manila into a transcendent, deeply emotional reflection on hope, sacrifice, and the courage to say goodbye.”

“Mag-iina” won Best Screenplay in the Full-Length Category. Writer Guelan Varela Luarca was commended for a “masterfully written, fearlessly complex script; for its layered, visionary storytelling; for crafting a hauntingly rich narrative filled with fascinating, grotesque characters; and for turning a deeply resonant tale of domestic grief and family dysfunction into a sharp, provocative reflection of the underlying dark realities of Philippine society.”

Lysa Catolico and Jazmine Gin Pateña’s “Runo”! received the Best Screenplay award in the Short Film Category for “crafting a witty yet deeply emotional narrative; for capturing hearts through a perfect blend of high entertainment and buoyant artistry; for its moving tribute to unconditional loyalty; and for its fine animation that illustrates the profound bonds of love and sacrifice that define man’s best friend.”

The “NETPAC” (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema) Award for Best Film in the Full-Length Category went to “Status: Rejected” by Vahn Leinard Pascual for “its effective use of cinematic elements to tell a character study with an unapologetic portrayal of desire and the reality of aging.”

For the Short Film Category, “The River Flows in Different Places”  by Lot-lot Hermosura takes home the “NETPAC” Award for “its authentic storytelling that cleverly works around limitations of the subject, remaining personal and still resonant with the audience.”

Martin del Rosario from “Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam” won Best Actor, cited for his “deeply affecting and sensitive presence; for his remarkably restrained and effective performance which carries the film’s profound emotional weight through non-verbal mastery; for his gentle, nuanced expressions during quiet moments eloquently conveying the quiet grief, heartbreak, and resilience of a gay man fighting to look hopeful and strong while caring for his dying partner.”

For Best Actress, Ruby Ruiz (“Status: Rejected”) and Marietta ‘Pokwang’ Subong (“2 Valid IDs”) tied for the Balanghai trophy. Ruiz was cited for “an absolute masterclass in screen acting; for her pitch-perfect balance of mischievous spunk and delicate melancholy; for making herself a deeply human center of Pinay folly and absurdity; for making complex, heavy emotional scenes look entirely effortless; and for grounding a quirky online romance in the quiet, heartbreaking vulnerability of an aging woman yearning for love and companionship.”

Subong was cited for “a deeply transformative and devastating performance; for courageously shedding her comedic roots to deliver a riveting, grounded portrayal; and for her touching emotional control, impressively encapsulating in her portrayal the raw frustration, quiet dignity.”

Another tied win goes to Best Supporting Actors Lucas Andalio (“Mag-iina”) and K.D. Omalin (“Hand of God”). The young Andalio was cited for “taking on a most complex role; for seamlessly navigating through intense, grotesque character shifts alongside seasoned co-stars; for instantly owning the screen, holding his own among an elite cast to pull off a jarring, grotesque transformation from innocent child to dark force that remains crucial to the film’s impact; and for an astonishingly mature performance for someone so young.”

Cinemalaya 22 Awards Night. Photo: Erickson Dela Cruz

The equally young Omalin was cited for “a deeply moving performance and extraordinary screen presence, for fully capturing the spirit of a young boy torn between conflict and hope, and for effectively rendering the sensibility of a Mindanao child soldier whose life transforms as he discovers a love and talent for football, giving powerful life to a dream of escaping violence for a brighter future.”

Singer and actress Bituin Escalante (A.ni.mál) won the award for Best Performance of A Supporting Actress. Escalante was praised for “delivering a ferocious performance of incredible brilliance; for effortlessly pivoting from mordant dark comedy to trenchant drama; and for capturing the deep pain and tight resilience of a woman navigating political scandal, commanding every scene with incredible presence and show-stopping mastery.”

Technical awards include:

Best Editing – John Rogers (A.ni.mál), for “razor-sharp narrative pacing and punchy cutting that sharpen the film’s dark humor and biting satire; for precise rhythmic timing heightening the absurdity of provincial patronage and dynastic politics, turning a tense household conflict over a compromising video into a hilarious, expertly paced critique of power and corruption in Philippine society.”

Best Cinematography  – Adam Dumaguin (“Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam”), for “evocative visual storytelling; for its powerful, piercing imagery that’s a masterclass in controlling of light and shadow alongside deliberate camera angling; for its intimate visual composition that heightens the raw emotional weight of the narrative, capturing the heartbreaking isolation and tender grief of a man watching his partner ravaged by a vicious deadly disease.”

Best Production Design  – Katrish Aristoki (“Mag-iina”), for “immersive art direction; for crafting the haunting, gothic atmosphere and spatial design that effectively mirror a family’s deep dysfunction, trapping three generations of women within an unforgettable visual landscape of grief, madness, and dark domestic secrets.”

Best Musical Scoring  – David Yuhico (“Mag-iina”), for “a masterfully subtle and haunting soundtrack; for using evocative piano melodies to build intense atmospheric dread; for providing acoustic complement to a crucial narrative thread; for deeply enriching a movie’s gothic tone while accentuating the silent tension, grief, and dysfunction consuming a deeply estranged family.”

Best Sound  – Elian Idioma (“Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam”), for “exceptional achievement in sound design; for effectively crafting audible silence to heighten the film’s intense emotional weight, with every subtle sound and quiet pause intimately drawing the audience into the room, amplifying the heartbreak and misery of watching your partner painfully wither away.”

Best Ensemble Performance  – The cast of “Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam”  by David Corpuz, for “their deeply cohesive and moving portrayals; for authentically rendering through their characters the tender dynamics and throbbing warmth of Philippine family life; for bringing profound tenderness to an agonizing existential crisis; and for portraying a devoted partner and a loving family united in care and grief as they stand by their terribly sick loved one’s side.” The ensemble was composed of actors Martin del  Rosario, Yayo Aguila, Miguel Oldron, and Epy Quizon.

The Special Jury Prize winners were “2 Valid IDs” by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan and Abet Pagdagdagan Raz, cited for “its gripping, socially vital storytelling; for fearlessly exposing systemic decay and institutional absurdity; for transforming mundane bureaucratic red tape into a devastating, life- or-death struggle; and for powerfully capturing the quiet dignity of common Filipinos in their everyday struggle for survival.”; and “Para-Paraan” (“Finding A Way Through”) by Mae Chan Li, cited for “its stark, grounded documentary style; for its piercing look into the physical and systemic barriers of urban life; for challenging audiences to rethink accessibility, inclusion, and the ordinary spaces around us; for its masterful but economical narrative; and for its powerful advocacy for the rights of the disabled.”

“2 Valid IDs”  by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan and Abet Pagdagdagan Raz and “Hoy, Hoy, Ingat!”  (Hey, Hey, Take Care!) by Norvin de los Santos won the hearts of the Cinemalaya theater goers and audiences, receiving the Audience Choice Award for Full-Length and Short Film categories, respectively.

From Quezon City to the Nation: SM Hotels Champions Hospitality as a Pathway to Second Chances

SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC), through its hotel properties Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA and Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, is utilizing hospitality training to help Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) gain industry-relevant skills and transition into actual employment. Through partnerships with local governments, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Radisson Hotel Group, and other stakeholders, SM Hotels is helping create a practical link between skills development, hospitality employment, and life beyond detention.

This nationwide advocacy traces its beginnings to the Quezon City Government under Mayor Joy Belmonte, whose No Woman Left Behind and No Juan Left Behind programs provide PDLs with opportunities to gain practical skills and prepare for their transition back into the workforce. SM Hotels has supported these initiatives by bringing its hospitality expertise and training capabilities into the programs, creating opportunities for qualified graduates to apply their skills in an actual hotel environment.

(From left): Regional Director BJMP NCR Jail Chief Superintended Baby Noel Montalvo, and other guest, SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) Executive Vice President Peggy Angeles; Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte; Father of Severino Montallana II, Marissa Basa, Severino Montallana II, Mother of Severino Montallana II, General Manager Reycie Gutierrez, Jail Superintendent Maria Lourdes Pascion, SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) Senior Vice President Operations Cathy Nepomuceno; SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) AVP Public Relations Nian Rigor; Park Inn by Radisson Clark Cluster Director People and Culture Fernando Manalang; Multi-access Cooperative Agency Harlyn Hilado; Multi-access Cooperative Agency Stephanie Cabahug; Multi-access Cooperative Agency Davis Kong.

In 2024, Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA launched Basic Housekeeping Skills Training for women PDLs at the Quezon City Jail Female Dormitory. The program expanded in 2026 to the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory through Basic Food and Beverage Operations Training, providing both women and men with industry-relevant skills aligned with actual hotel operations.

For SM Hotels, the impact of these programs goes beyond training completion. The ultimate measure is the ability of graduates to translate their newly acquired skills into meaningful work.

In particular, Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA recently welcomed Severino Montallana II, its first hire under the No Juan Left Behind program. After completing the Basic Food and Beverage Operations Training while at the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory, Montallana regained his freedom and subsequently joined the hotel workforce. Montallana joins Marissa Basa, the first graduate of the hotel’s Basic Housekeeping Skills Training for women PDLs to secure employment at Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA after her release.

“The stories of Marissa and Severino remind us that rehabilitation becomes truly meaningful when it leads to a real opportunity beyond the walls. We are proud to be part of a program that gives people the chance to move forward with dignity and purpose,” said Reycie Gutierrez, General Manager of Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA.

The programs are anchored on collaboration among the Quezon City Government, BJMP, SM Hotels, Radisson Hotel Group, Multi-Access Cooperative, and training partners, demonstrating how government and the private sector can work together to build a framework that connects rehabilitation and skills development with employment.

The said approach has already gained ground beyond Quezon City, with its implementation in another SMHCC property in Cebu. At Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, a similar hospitality training program is being conducted at the Cebu City Jail Female Dormitory in partnership with BJMP, TESDA, and other stakeholders.

Under the Skills Behind Walls program, PDLs receive hands-on housekeeping training in a mock-up hotel room built within the jail facility and aligned with hospitality industry standards. The first Cebu batch produced 24 graduates, with Kimberly Cabahug among its success stories after securing employment as a public area attendant at Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu and beginning her journey back into the workforce.

“This is not just about giving a job. More importantly, it is about giving people the skills, confidence, and opportunity to rebuild their lives and become productive members of society,” said Ann Olalo, General Manager of Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, highlighting how employment can help former PDLs transition back into the community and establish more stable livelihoods.

(From left): Leadership Team of Radisson Blu Cebu together with JSUPT STEPHANNY F SALAZAR – Warden of Cebu City Jail Annex, JSUPT JONNABELLE ROILES TEMPLADO, MPA – Warden of Cebu City Jail Female Dormitory, JSUPT ELSIE EIREEN R ALCOMENDRAS, DPA – Chief, Regional Welfare and Development Division, JCSUPT LUISITO C MUÑOZ, CESE – Regional Director of BJMPRO-VII, LEONIDES GABE MANAYAGA, Congresswoman Cutie Del Mar, GM Ann Olalo, Chief Operating Officer, MGB Skills Development and Assessment Center, Inc, Gamaliel Vicente Jr., Regional Director, TESDA Region VII, Kimberly Cabahug and Jacelyn E. Munez, Multi-Access Cooperative (MAX).

The programs in Quezon City and Cebu demonstrate how SM Hotels can use its properties, hospitality expertise, and operational environment to provide training that is directly relevant to the workplace. With hotels requiring skilled personnel across housekeeping, food and beverage, public areas, kitchen operations, and other functions, the hospitality sector can provide practical avenues for qualified PDLs to put their training to work. The model can also be adapted by other cities based on their local needs, available training resources, and employment requirements. At its core is a practical framework: equip PDLs with industry-relevant skills, provide hands-on training, and help qualified graduates transition into the workforce.

In the case of SMHCC, its portfolio of hotels across key destinations provides a platform to bring this advocacy to more locations while working alongside local governments, BJMP, TESDA, and other partners. Each program can respond to the needs of its host city while drawing on the hospitality industry’s capacity to provide relevant training and actual employment opportunities.

“Mayor Joy Belmonte started this effort with a clear vision of leaving no one behind, and it has now grown into an advocacy with the potential to reach more cities across the country,” said SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation Executive Vice President Peggy Angeles. “As one of the country’s leading hospitality groups with a nationwide footprint, SM Hotels is in a unique position to help turn this vision into reality by bringing together our properties, partners, and stakeholders to help more PDLs gain skills, find meaningful work, and move forward,” Ms. Angeles added.

SM Hotels is putting the capabilities of the hospitality industry to work beyond its hotels, thus turning industry training into practical skills and actual employment for qualified PDLs. From Quezon City to Cebu, its initiatives demonstrate how hospitality can serve as a platform for skills development and inclusive employment, one skill, one graduate, and one job at a time.

A Rainy Day Urban Sanctuary at Lanson Place Mall of Asia

From effortless check-in to culinary delights at Bytes and Cyan, Lanson Place Mall of Asia redefines the rainy day city escape into a memorable family sanctuary.

Rainy days turn Manila’s fast pace into a reason to unwind. Rather than canceling weekend plans, a rainy forecast presents the ultimate excuse for an urban retreat—and Lanson Place Mall of Asia, Manila provides the perfect setting for a seamless, cozy family staycation.

The Seamless Arrival and Warm Welcome

Check-in was an absolute breeze. Unloading luggage, and handling check-in protocols can frequently feel chaotic. However, the front desk team handled our arrival with fluid efficiency, offering refreshing welcome drinks and swift registration. Within minutes, we held our keycards and were guided seamlessly to our room, transitioning effortlessly from the rainy city outside into a calm, temperature-controlled haven.

An Expansive One-Bedroom Suite

Stepping into our One-Bedroom Suite felt less like entering a hotel room and more like arriving at a sophisticated, meticulously appointed modern home. Designed for both extended stays and refined short breaks, the suite offers a generous layout featuring a living room, a dining area, a fully equipped kitchenette, and a Queen bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bay landscape.

While the rain fell outside, we curled up on the plush sofa in the living area, enjoying complimentary tea and watching movies on the smart TV. The convenience of a full kitchenette, complete with a microwave, induction cooktop, water filtration, and washing machine, provided invaluable peace of mind for a family. It allowed us to keep snacks ready and routines intact without feeling confined.

The suite’s plush mattress and premium linens.

There is something inherently comforting about watching rain fall over the Manila Bay skyline from the cozy warmth of an expansive suite living room—a tranquil vantage point where city rhythm meets residential luxury.

Casual Elegance and Comfort Food at Bytes

With weather discouraging outdoor exploration, staying on-property for dinner felt like a luxury rather than a limitation. We made our way to Bytes, the hotel’s stylish grab-and-go and casual dining nook located on the lobby level. Designed with modern minimalist aesthetics and comfortable, inviting seating, Bytes serves as an ideal venue for a relaxed family meal.

The menu at Bytes hits all the right notes for comfort food elevated through quality ingredients. From rich regional classics like Kapampangan Bringhe and Visayan Apan-apan to crisp Fresh Spring Roll Bites, every dish is crafted to elevate your dining experience. As part of their Gateway to Gastronomy, don’t miss the eco-conscious Sotanghon Guisado—a standout Plate for the Planet offering that pairs savory vermicelli with buttered toast. Save room to share their decadent Ube Custard Cake, and keep it refreshing with a Kamias Ginger Spritz or signature Bytes Iced Tea. The food was delicious. We enjoyed it. Give it a try soon in your next visit.

A Morning Feast at Cyan Modern Kitchen

Following a night of undisturbed sleep on the suite’s plush mattress and premium linens, we had a family breakfast at Cyan Modern Kitchen, the hotel’s flagship interactive dining restaurant.

Cyan’s spacious, floor-to-ceiling glass layout offers panoramic views of the bay and city, making even a dreary morning feel bright and inspiring. The breakfast buffet is an expansive culinary journey, featuring live cooking stations that serve both international favorites and traditional Filipino classics. From freshly cooked eggs, bacons, and noodles to comforting bowls of hot champorado, the spread catered generously to every member of the family. The attentive staff constantly replenished dishes, ensuring our stay concluded on a high culinary note.

The Verdict: An Effortless Rainy Day Retreat

Gloomy skies can’t dampen the spirit of a weekend escape. At Lanson Place Mall of Asia, the thoughtful design, spacious residential suite layouts, and top-tier dining options prove that a staycation can be thoroughly enriching even when spent entirely indoors. From effortless check-in to culinary delights at Bytes and Cyan, Lanson Place redefines the rainy day city escape into a memorable family sanctuary.

A Culinary Journey Across the Philippines

Armed with the goal of transforming hotel dining into a compelling reason to travel, Megaworld Hotels & Resorts recently held its annual Food and Beverage Conference in Boracay Newcoast under the theme, TIMPLA: Balancing Heritage, Elevating Craft, Driving Growth. One of its highlights was the MHR Food Festival, where Executive Chefs from the group’s 16 properties showcased their flagship creations, reflecting MHR’s vision of crafting distinctive dining experiences and signature dishes that inspire guests to travel not only for the destination, but for the table as well.

While every Megaworld Hotels & Resorts property carries the group’s signature Sampaguita Menu, reflecting the warmth and identity of the MHR brand, each hotel also celebrates the culinary heritage of its destination through thoughtfully curated local specialties. From Cebu’s hearty Balbacua to Iloilo’s flavorful Lechon de Valenciana, these regional favorites allow guests to experience the culture and character of each destination through every meal, making every stay feel both familiar and distinctly local.

Beyond its flagship dishes, the hotel group is also introducing unique dining concepts. One of the newest additions is the “Modern Ilonggo Diner” dining concept of Belmont Hotel Iloilo. Celebrating Iloilo’s rich culinary heritage, and designed to complement the hotel’s contemporary architecture and inviting dining spaces, the concept offers a faster and more accessible approach to Ilonggo cuisine.

Megaworld Hotels & Resorts’ Culinary and Food and Beverage Teams attended the F&B Conference held at Boracay Newcoast on July 21 to 23.

“The MHR Food Festival is our way of celebrating the unique culinary identities of our destinations,” said Chef Franco Martin “Panky” Lopez, Corporate Chef of Megaworld Hotels & Resorts. “We want every property to offer a signature dining experience that guests will remember long after their stay. By showcasing local flavors, elevating culinary craftsmanship, and embracing innovation, we create meaningful experiences that become part of every travel journey.”

Capping off the evening was the recognition of this year’s most outstanding culinary innovations, with Mercure Mactan Cebu’s Roasted Beef Balbacua Pares taking home the Best Signature Dish award along with the People’s Choice award, and Courtyard by Marriott Iloilo’s Sampaguita Beverage Collection winning Best Featured Beverage.

Sustainability at the Center of Every Kitchen

Beyond culinary innovation, the conference also underscored MHR’s growing commitment to sustainable kitchen operations, demonstrating that responsible practices and exceptional dining can go hand in hand.

Among the initiatives showcased was the adoption of Winnow food waste technology at Grand Westside Hotel, the country’s largest hotel. The AI-powered system enables chefs to monitor, measure, and analyze food waste in real time, helping kitchens make smarter purchasing and production decisions while significantly reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.

These sustainability efforts reflect MHR’s broader vision of creating kitchens that are not only innovative but also environmentally responsible, ensuring that every dish served contributes to a more sustainable future for the hospitality industry.

Building Kitchens Where People Thrive

Equally important to culinary excellence is the culture that powers every kitchen. A major focus of the 2026 MHR F&B Conference was cultivating workplaces where creativity and collaboration alongside operations.

The conference offers sessions on leadership, mentorship, communication, and team development, participants explored how empowered and engaged culinary teams ultimately deliver more meaningful guest experiences.

“A great kitchen is measured not only by the quality of its food, but also by the culture behind it. When our people feel valued, supported, and inspired, they bring their best selves to work every day. That positive energy translates into stronger teamwork, greater creativity, and ultimately, more memorable dining experiences for our guests,” Lopez added.

As Megaworld Hotels & Resorts continues to expand its portfolio and elevate its food and beverage offerings, the 2026 MHR F&B Conference aims that every meal immerses guests in the flavors, stories, and culture of each destination, creating memorable experiences that extend far beyond the dining table.

Five Signs You’re in Your ‘Hi, Hello’ Era

Every generation has its own version of romance. For Gen Z, it isn’t always about grand gestures or dramatic confessions. Sometimes, it’s a hallway glance in high school, a mutual follow on social media, a conversation that never got past “hi,” or a message you kept typing but never sent.

It’s the kind of connection that lives in the “what ifs”—the people you almost knew, the stories that almost happened, and the feelings that somehow stayed with you long after graduation.

If any of these sound familiar, you might just be in your “Hi, Hello” era.

1. You still think about your high school crush… even years later.

You’ve met dozens of new people since then, but somehow your mind still goes back to that one person from high school.

Maybe they sat a few rows away from you. Maybe you only crossed paths in the hallway between classes. Maybe you only knew each other through quick smiles and the occasional “hi.”

Nothing happened. You never dated. You barely even talked.

Yet every now and then, you still catch yourself wondering how they’re doing and what would’ve happened if one of you had made the first move.

2. You’re both waiting for someone to make the first move.

You check your notifications more often than you’d like to admit.

Maybe they’ll reply first. Maybe they’ll message after seeing your story. Maybe they’ll greet you on your birthday. Maybe they’ll finally ask how you’ve been.

So you wait.

The funny thing is… they’re probably waiting for you, too. Two people hoping the other person makes the first move usually leads to one thing: silence. And before you know it, weeks become months, months become years, and the conversation you imagined never actually begins.

3. You realized saying “Hi, hello” is easy—keeping the conversation alive is the hard part.

Anyone can say “hi.” The real challenge comes after.

What do you say next? How do you keep the conversation going without sounding awkward? Without looking too eager? Without wondering if you’re being left on read? Some of the best stories never happened because both people got stuck after the greeting. Sometimes the hardest part isn’t introducing yourself—it’s finding the courage to continue.

4. Everyone has a “Katie.”

Maybe your person’s name isn’t actually Katie.

Maybe it’s Miguel. Sophia. Josh. Andrea. Or someone whose name you never even learned.

“Katie” represents that one person almost everyone has—the one who quietly stayed in your heart despite the years. The one who became your greatest “what if.” The one you held onto not because you shared a love story, but because you never got the chance to write one.

Sometimes, all we remember is a smile, a voice, or the feeling they left behind.

And sometimes, after years of wondering, finally learning their name feels like finding the missing piece of a story you’ve been carrying all along.

5. You’ve finally accepted that every great love story starts with a simple “Hi, Hello.”

Not every love story begins with fireworks.

Inspired by the familiar high school crush trope, the song follows someone who keeps meeting the same person through different stages of life—from high school to college and beyond. Each reunion starts with a simple greeting, but fear, timing, and hesitation always get in the way. Until one unexpected encounter finally gives them the courage to say more than just “hi, hello.”

Known for his work as a performer, actor, and one of the country’s fast-rising digital creators, AJ Colico, artist from iMe Philippines, continues to explore relatable stories through his music—stories that remind listeners that some of the biggest moments in life begin with the smallest words.

If you’ve ever had someone you couldn’t quite forget, someone you almost confessed to, or someone whose message you kept hoping would appear on your screen, “Hi Hello” might just feel like your story.

“Hi Hello” by AJ Colico is now available on all major music streaming platforms.
