ThrowbackSeries: Ramon Magsaysay Jr.

The late President Magsaysay’s commitment to the Filipinos didn’t die with him. With Jun Magsaysay, he left behind a son to carry on the legacy.

Former Senator Ramon Banzon Magsaysay, Jr., is a self-made businessman, hardworking, God-fearing, compassionate, and, in every way, the son of the late Philippine President Ramon del Fiero Magsaysay and Luz Banzon-Magsaysay. He is the man of the masses and for the masses.

He was born in Manila in 1938. His father’s rise to the presidency taught Jun and his two sisters, Milagros and Teresita, the virtues of integrity and honesty and to have a strong passion for the welfare of the common man. Inside Malacanang, the Magsaysay’s lived humbly, untouched by selfish ambitions and unmarred by the lust for power.

With President Magsaysay’s sudden death in 1957, the 19-year-old Jun inherited greater responsibilities that enabled him to recognize the value of perseverance and hard work. He had to step out of his father’s protective shadow and assume the role of man of the house.

He spent most of his academic years at the De La Salle College, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He pursued his academic studies at the Harvard School of Business Administration in Boston, Massachusetts, and in New York’s University Graduate School of Business Administration. He returned to the country armed with skills and knowledge that would later become a powerful tool in shaping and developing a major industry in the country.

Magsaysay Jr. pioneered the country’s cable television business.  Today, with over 550 cable operators nationwide, cable television has turned into a billion-a-year industry.

During his years in the Senate, he worked for laws to improve the living conditions of the majority of the Filipino people. His programs and policies for the development of cooperatives and small enterprises are geared toward encouraging ordinary Filipinos to make use of their individual capabilities as they strive to attain their socio-economic goals.

Indeed, the late President Magsaysay’s commitment to the Filipinos didn’t die with him. With Jun Magsaysay, he left behind a son to carry on the legacy.

I asked him during a past interview: Is the state of Philippine politics maturing?

“I think so. The birth of people power in our country, which we shared with other nations everywhere, saw the emancipation of our country from politics of patronage to a system of governance where the voice of the people is no longer ignored. My mission is to further accelerate the country’s economic development and ensure that the masses of the people shall be the principal beneficiaries of growth,” shared the former senator, now 83 years old.

Celebrity parents Drew and Iya Arellano share their lives amid the quarantine

Drew Arellano and Iya Villania are role models for Filipino families. They are especially popular on social media, where millions of followers watch as they raise three adorable children: Primo, Leon, and Alana.

Despite being a celebrity family, they have an aura of approachability that makes them relatable. This became more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when they were affected by the quarantine restrictions just like everyone else.

“We’ve been staying home. Each day, it’s the same routine. We wake up, have breakfast, work out and the kids play. I’m just waiting for them to say ‘so when do we mix it up? When do we go outside?’ So far they’re still okay. They have each other and that’s an important thing,” Drew says.

Iya adds, “We’re fortunate to be able to say that we’re doing well. More than anything, it’s the company and because we keep each other happy, no matter where we are.”

To adjust, Drew and Iya allowed their children to decide what they will do for the day. The parents ask if they want to cook, read, or work with numbers. Screen time is also welcome since it provides an opportunity for learning. According to Drew, “when you’re trying to teach your kids, we have to go with the flow. We just have to regulate it and try as much as possible to inject it with learning.”

Iya agrees, saying, “You have to give them options because it gives them a sense of power. It’s only natural for every human to want to feel that way. Drew and I are aware of how we felt when we were going to school and we don’t want to have to enforce that on our kids.”

This unstructured method for learning has proven to be effective. Allowing their children to go at their own pace, when they’re ready to understand and absorb information, making learning faster. Soon, they were surprised when Primo began adding double digits.

Naturally, the Arellanos are considering a combination of homeschooling and unschooling. Unschooling is a form of education where students learn at their own pace, in a supportive setting that encourages curiosity.

The parents are just as decisive about their children’s health. Their approach is a mix of affection and medicine.

“One of my tips would be to give your kids a lot of hugs and kisses. When it needs to be taken to the next level, then that’s when you get to something that’s no-fail and that would have to be Calpol for Kids,” says Iya. “Especially kung kaunting fever lang, oh my goodness. Nakakakaba.”

The couple tells a story when Primo, their eldest, had his first sickness. The couple shares, “As first-time parents, raising a kid was kind of like walking on eggshells. We weren’t sure what to do. It was a good thing we had their grandparents to guide us.”

The parents became more experienced as Primo grew older, which became helpful when Leon and Alana were born. Fortunately, the children are generally healthy.

The family trusts Paracetamol Calpol for Kids, which helps with fever and pain due to toothaches, headaches, migraines, muscle aches, sore throats, and musculoskeletal discomfort.

Iya shares, “doctors always ask ‘May fever ba?’ I feel like it boils down to a fever, so it’s nice that we have Paracetamol Calpol for Kids that we can rely on. That will definitely make them feel good after a dose because it’s so fast-acting.”

The Arellanos advise parents to always have paracetamol fever and pain relievers at home. Iya says “you don’t know when you might need that. You don’t want to have to worry and wait until magbukas ‘yung mga stores before you can act on it and get medicine.”

Drew agrees, sharing, “You’ll have peace of mind knowing that when you have Paracetamol Calpol for Kids, chances are, bababa fever ng anak mo. It’s so painful as a parent to see your kids na nanghihina. Sana ako na lang.”

Saving lives with vaccines

For World Immunization Month this August, the Arellanos are reminding parents to get their children vaccinated. When they are inoculated, they build antibodies that protect them from diseases, even if they develop them as adults. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that routine vaccinations during childhood help stop 14 illnesses.

One of the common side effects of getting vaccinated is fever. Paracetamol Calpol for Kids can help. It can relieve fever in just 15 minutes while still being gentle on your kids’ tummies. The medicine comes in orange and strawberry flavors, making it easier for parents to give children their doses.

The couple says, “trust the science and your pediatrician. They know what’s best for your kids.”

Huawei sees bright future for Thomasian scholars

Huawei Philippines organized a virtual event to warmly welcome its first batch of scholars from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the oldest existing university in Asia.

Thomasian students Hermil Gerard Calasang, Jia Anette Phi, Kryzha Lei Aguilar, Maricar Auditor, and Matthew Gabriel Rabanes joined the Huawei family as scholars with a bright future ahead of them.

In her speech, Dean Jerralyn Padua of the UST College of Information and Computing Sciences shared how the pandemic has affected all families in terms of their financial capabilities to support the education of their children. “This opportunity given by the Huawei team is really very helpful for them to be able to continue their education despite the current situation in the country.”

Dr. Angelo Dela Cruz, Dean of College of Engineering, considered the scholarship program as “very timely” given the financial difficulties faced by many students amid the pandemic. “Actually, I have just received at least 20 promissory notes last week during our enrollment. We hope the scholarship program will be the beginning of many more activities and programs between Huawei and UST that will ultimately benefit our students.”

Prof. Cheryl Peralta, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, said the program is “a great blessing and a beacon of hope in this very challenging time.” “We believe that effective and productive collaborations help enrich the experience of students and university staff and allow them to do their best in the Now Normal, not only to survive but to thrive in the new opportunities brought about by the rapidly changing world of technology.”

Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Maria Cecilia Tio Cuison, Director of the Office of Student Affairs, expressed her gratitude to Huawei for the opportunity to help Thomasian students realize their dreams. “We owe it to you as a solid partner in the educative mission. You have widened our doors for far-reaching opportunities that pave the way for us to fulfill our envisioned goals, especially to sustain our strong linkage with the industry to expand educational opportunities,” Tio Cuison added.

For his part, Huawei Philippines Human Resources Director Peter Zhang congratulated the five scholars, saying they are bound for great things and that they play a key role in helping society through ICT. Zhang also thanked UST for the partnership: “We look forward to having a continuous cooperation with UST in the coming years and supporting more deserving students as well as the talent ecosystem for the ICT industry.”

The scholars are in their fourth and final year in their respective programs. With their passion for technology, they hope to continue their education despite hardships, with the goal of starting a career in the ICT industry soon and being one of those who drive innovation in the country.

At present, Huawei Philippines has 19 scholars from local universities. As a company that values education and talents, Huawei Philippines has been partnering with local universities and colleges to support Filipino students in various ways and help them achieve their aspirations. Ocean Park Progresses with Pre-qualification Exercise to Solicit Potential Partners for Future Development

Hong Kong – As its rethink exercise progresses to a new stage, Ocean Park today issued a pre-qualification invitation to solicit potential partners to co-develop the Park through a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. This formally starts the two-phase procurement process for the implementation of the future strategy of Ocean Park under the rethink exercise. This process begins with the current Pre-Qualification Stage and will be followed by the Tender Stage in late 2021 or early 2022.

The pre-qualification exercise will help pre-qualify respondents for the tender process, maintaining a manageable number of bidders while ensuring that they share the Park’s vision on future development, conservation, and education (C&E), as well as having the requisites to deliver the development proposals of the future strategy.

This pre-qualification will allow potential respondents eight weeks to respond with proposals and feedback.

Lau Ming-wai, Chairman of Ocean Park Corporation, said, “The journey of realizing our vision for a new Ocean Park has made a big leap with this pre-qualification invitation. We can only achieve the Park’s new vision with the right line-up of partners who share the long-term goal not only for the Park but also for Hong Kong in general. Together, we hope to turn Ocean Park into the pearl of the Government’s Invigorating Island South initiative, enhancing visitor experiences from every aspect, while achieving business sustainability.”

The rethink exercise for Ocean Park and the new zones for development

Together with the Government, Ocean Park completed the rethink exercise in January 2021 to chart the way forward and reimagine new opportunities, taking advantage of the Park’s proven track record in C&E and unique geographical location. The plan breaks through existing frameworks and the Park will implement a new operating model and fee-charging mode, and introduce brand-new visitor experiences.

To further support the Park’s efforts in C&E, bidders seeking pre-qualification are encouraged to integrate the following principles into the zones’ concept design, operations, or other offerings:

  • Be environmentally responsible and enhance animal welfare in line with the Park’s objectives.
  • Accomplish sustainable operational excellence through various initiatives, such as water conservation, waste management and recycling, sustainable procurement processes, and more.
  • Share the same C&E values as the Park, focusing on making a positive impact on consumer behavioral change through educational and experiential learning activities, concept themes, and content.
  • Be socially responsible and inclusive, catering to those with special needs.

The new plan offers development opportunities at three new zones within Ocean Park with site areas totaling approximately 376,000 square meters (sqm). These include the whole new, free-entry Retail, Dining and Entertainment (RDE) Zone in the lower park (approx. 89,000 sqm), the Adventure Zone (approx. 125,000 sqm), and Wellness Zone (approx. 162,000 sqm) in the upper park. Respondents can submit their interest in either a single zone, two zones, or all three zones.  For the Adventure and Wellness zones, they are also welcomed to express interest in developing and operating selected parts of each zone.

  • The Retail, Dining, and Entertainment Zone: The lower park area will be transformed into a low-rise retail area with differentiated and experiential retail, dining, and entertainment offerings, such as open spaces for activities, alfresco dining, indoor entertainment and events, and children’s play areas. It will be open to the public for free, complemented by the Park’s existing C&E attractions that will be available on a pay-as-you-go basis.
  • The Adventure Zone: Located in the upper area of the Park, this zone is to be built on the existing Adventure Land area which has a natural downhill slope that is suitable for many adventure-related attractions. Leveraging on the topography and landscape, this zone will include thrilling outdoor attractions and activities that provide adventure experiences inspired by nature.
  • The Wellness Zone: Two sites are available for the Wellness Zone. The first being the southern tip of the upper park which is currently occupied by thrill rides, and the second is the adjacent undeveloped area of the Park, on the west side of the new Water World. The Wellness Zone will provide authentic and immersive experiences that promote different dimensions of wellness and an avenue to escape from daily urban life.

Jumpstarting growth: How ‘hacking’ your apps can be a solution for you

It seems almost every day we get bombarded with ads clamoring for us to download the hottest new app that will change our lives.

Need something to track your sleep or something that can convert images to text? There’s an app for that! How about the note-taking app that’s somehow better than all the others on the market? There are quite a few of that, too! But which app should we get?

How can budding apps compete with already established titans in a market where recognition is everything?

Enter: Growth hacking.

It’s growing, growing, growing

But what exactly is growth hacking?

To put it simply, growth hacking is a strategy where creative tactics are employed in any part of the product development process and consumer journey to focus on growth. For startups and app creators, it’s certainly a viable alternative to reach a larger audience in a shorter period of time at a lower cost compared to traditional marketing.

Shane Shan, director of APAC Huawei Consumer Cloud Service, explains that “creativity at growth” means that developers must have a broader view of the entire process and they should pay close attention to every step in the product and user journey.

Perhaps the most important point of growth hacking, though, is its collaborative nature. It takes the efforts of everyone—from marketers, engineers, developers, to even the end-user—to optimize every step in the process and achieve growth quickly and effectively.

Applying their knowledge

Who better to peel away the curtain than the judges at AppsUP 2021: Huawei HMS App Innovative Contest? They will help budding app developers better understand the mobile app industry.

Nowadays, it’s not enough to just have a useful and creative app. It is also necessary to understand your potential user base by figuring out what they want. And delivering on that promise is an essential part of your app’s development stage.

“To grow your product, especially a video game, good community management is key,” shared Adam Ardisasmita, chief executive officer of Arsanesia.

He recommends having a platform like a Discord server, where users can actively give feedback and suggestions to improve the app.

Having actual user data to support whatever features you change or add to your product is important in ensuring your app’s continued success.

Jojo Flores, the co-founder of Plug and Play Tech Center, asserts that app developers should be flexible when it comes to feedback.

I’ve got an app, now what?

Involving creative decisions even in the early stages of development can be a great boon.

Frequent testing from an early stage can prevent last-minute changes later in the timeline that could end up quite costly for both time and budget.

Gwen Guo, the chairperson of the Singapore Games Association (SGGA), advises new app developers to first study their target market well and then create their marketing plan based on that. Next is to “form relationships with the launch platforms, understand what features these platforms have to boost visibility, whether it’s a featured page, new apps list, or seasonal collections.”

These lists can really help boost their app to a larger audience. Figuring out how they work and using them to their advantage is what makes a user click the download button.

But the types of users are also important. “User engagement is important to sustain the business for an app. Sometimes, a high per-user engagement is better than having more users, which really doesn’t increase value. For example, it’s better to have one million paying users than having 10 million non-paying users,” Flores adds. That’s why over time, apps have updates that encourage the increased app usage.

Guo also recommends taking the time to build a community around your app, “Building a nurturing community that not just helps drum up hype for the app but also follows up with responsive support for customers, helping with customer retention and eventually ratings.”

Hack it out with AppsUP 2021

Another common growth hacking strategy is forging partnerships.

“Establishing channel partnerships is one key step in making this (growth) happen, and a partnership with such platforms as the HUAWEI AppGallery becomes vital to product success,” Flores said.

Since its launch in 2018, AppGallery now has over 550 million active users globally. And though it’s relatively new to the market, it’s much easier for apps to be noticed in a less saturated platform.

Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) is constantly introducing new features such as AI, AR, and analytics in their open capabilities—HMS Core kits to help developers create better user experiences.

“Understanding these tools and their capabilities will be useful for production planning—developers can either create new apps that push the potential of these features or use these features to enhance what they already have in current apps,” Guo said.

HMS’ launch of AppsUP 2021 is a perfect opportunity for developers to take advantage of the HMS Core kits and earn a path to the third-largest mobile ecosystem.

AppsUP 2021 is open to all mobile app developers and app owners, whether they be students, professionals, or startups. Developers must be based in the APAC region and the submitted apps must be developed or integrated with at least one HMS Core kit and published to AppGallery to be eligible.

Don’t miss this opportunity to launch your app to millions of screens across the globe and win from the $200,000 APAC prize pool.
