OPM Greats Team Up for Minis Island

Ebe Dancel, Barbie Almalbis, Mojofly, Razorback, and more join forces to raise funds for the education of the children in Minis Island.

This October, some of the biggest names in the local music scene will be banding together to aid one of the smallest communities in Sulu.

It will happen at “Musika’t Aklat,” a virtual concert spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Fort Bonifacio Global City (RCFBGC). Featuring the likes of Ebe Dancel, Barbie Almalbis, Mojofly, and Razorback, this project will attempt to financially aid Minis Island, a place located around 12 kilometers away from Jolo. Currently, the community has a lone school; it was built through the donations of the Rotary Club of Manila Premier. And now, Jan Emil Langomez, president of RCFBGC, aims to expand this project through the concert his club is organizing.

“We intend to build lodging facilities for faculty,” he said. “We also want to build a library and water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities for the islanders.”

Streamed live on Facebook from Makati’s Social House, “Musika’t Aklat” started on October 16. The first portion of the series was called “Solo Night” and featured performances from Dancel and Almalbis. Alongside them were other names like Sud Ballecer, Clara Benin, Waiian, and Tamara.

The second date will be on the 23rd and it is dubbed “Alternative Night.” It will feature Mojofly, Tanya Markova, Rouge, Bita, and the Botflies and Createurs.

MA bands Day 2

The final night is titled “Pinoy Rock Night” and it will happen on the 30th. It will feature Razorback, The Republicats, Shotgun Combo, Gin Rum and Truth, and Calebral. Tickets for each date are priced at 350 Php and they can be bought through Ticketmelon.

“While local authorities have been supportive, their resources nonetheless remain limited,” Langomez said. “This is where our club comes into partnership with the people to expand their existing infrastructure.”

Several months ago, RCFBGC planned for the concert to have an onsite equivalent. This, however, was scrapped due to the heightened restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019. Nevertheless, the club decided to push through with the virtual aspect of the series and they did so because of how important it is for the community it’s seeking to help. Joining RCFBGC in this noble endeavor are other Rotary clubs such as the Rotary Club of Makati Business District, Rotary Club of Makati Greenbelt, Rotary Club of San Nicolas Makati, and the Rotary Club of Makati Rockwell.

“The residents of the island have had a difficult history,” Langomez said. “This is our way of helping them get past that.”

Before the residents of Minis Island settled in the place they now call home, they lived in the nearby Tulayan Island. However, due to the violent clan wars and political rivalries that apparently characterize the place, they decided to transfer to Minis to live more peaceful lives. Not long after their arrival, however, they discovered that Minis was actually a hideout for members of the Abu Sayyaf. Soon enough, the Jihadist militant group began threatening and oppressing them.

In 2019 the Philippine Army, tipped off by the residents, arrived to drive the bandits away. A group of soldiers was then stationed there to keep the peace and during their stay, they realized that the children were lacking in basic education. Some cannot even spell their names.

In response, the soldiers took it upon themselves to teach the children. They used leaves native to the area as well as spare wood to build a makeshift shelter that served as a classroom. For a blackboard, they used a piece of wood damaged by bullets during their encounter with the Abu Sayyaf.

This, however, is no longer the case these days. Because of the efforts of other good Samaritans, the children now have a school. And if the plans of the RCFBGC succeed, they will have much more than that.

Love Wins in the New WeTV Original Series ‘BetCin’

Ano ba ang tamang timpla ng pag-ibig? That is the question at the center of the new WeTV Original series BetCin! The romantic comedy series starts streaming exclusively on WeTV on October 15 at 8:00 PM. New episodes drop every Friday.

Kylie Padilla and Andrea Torres play a social media celebrity couple in a seemingly perfect relationship, online that is. Behind the filtered posts, things are not so smooth sailing for Beth (Padilla) and Cindy (Torres).  Their differing priorities and needs begin pulling them apart, the gap widening the higher their number of followers, the Umamis, get.

As they figure out what’s next for them, “BetCin” has been selected as a finalist for “#RelationshipGoals”. The problem is, can they fake it until they make it all for the sake of a lot of likes and the large cash prize in the end. Beth and Cindy must find the right love recipe to convince their Umamis that they are the internet’s sweetest sweethearts.

When asked about what makes a relationship work, the two stars had these to say. “Trust and respect. Personally, ang pinaka important sa akin yung Trust kasi once na masira yun parang mahirap na bumalik sa dati.” Padilla said firmly. Andrea also shared her thoughts, “For me, respect. Kasi feeling ko kapag nirerespect niya ko there’s no room for me to doubt.” The latter also mentioned this is probably one of her most unforgettable projects yet. She continued, “It was an absolute pleasure and honor to be your Cindy.

Also joining the colorful cast of BetCin are Elora Españo, one of the country’s most sought-after independent actresses, and Pinoy Dream Academy alumna, Chai Fonacier, an award-winning actress who has appeared in TV shows and films.

BetCin is directed by Shugo Praico and story creator Fatrick Tabada co-wrote the eight-episode series with writer John Carlo Pacala. Over eight episodes, Praico balances out the drama that comes from a relationship on the rocks with punches of humor, adding to the relatability of the two central characters. “One of the brilliant elements of Fatrick Tabada’s original script for BETCIN, when we were developing it as a part of an anthology series years back, is its tone — a charming blend of wit and absurdist humor. When WeTV asked us to turn it into an 8-episode series, the genius JC Pacala and I decided to stick with that tone, push the comedy, and add poignancy into the mix, to tell the break-up story of an odd but lovable couple trapped in the zany situation they created. We wanted to give the audience a fresh take, a unique experience on this familiar kind of story.” The show is line-produced by Rein Entertainment Productions.

The release of the series is also timely, as there is a lot of conversation around inclusivity, bringing with it the opportunity to share these stories on a larger scale. “We feel that the time is right to put the spotlight on stories told from the lens of two women in a romantic relationship. This perspective is not often heard, and we wanted to give it the voice that it deserves,” explains WeTV Philippines country manager Georgette Tengco. “At the core of BetCin is a love story about two people navigating life and love as it plays out on social media. That’s something we can all relate to.

Watch the trailer of BetCin.

Get to know more about Beth and Cindy in a special interview on WeTV.

Happy 24 years Gloc-9!

Success is fickle-minded.

We have seen many one-hit wonders rise and fall out of the limelight since they can only do, well, only one hit. But to continually attain success is a sign of dedication and love for the craft. Such is what Aristotle Pollisco aka Gloc-9 has been doing for the past 24 years as he established his niche as a major influencer in the Philippine hip hop scene.

Gloc-9 rose from the ranks of hip hop wannabes in 1997 setting his roots from doing collaborations with other hip hop artists and doing underground album releases. It is no secret as to how hard he struggled and how much he sacrificed to claw his way out of anonymity—but as they say, “You can’t put a good man down.”

His remarkable climb to being one of the pillars of Philippine hip hop only proves the fact that hard work, dedication, and love of what you’re doing can lead to success. A story that reverberates as an inspiration to young aspiring artists.

With a career spanning almost a quarter of a century, Gloc-9 is more into making sure that the hip hop industry continues on into the next generation by opening the flood gates of opportunity to the many talented Filipino rappers using his social media clout as a platform for collaborations.

His recent “44 Challenge” generated thousands of responders that showcased how many talented Pinoy rappers are just hiding at the seams waiting for their chance to take center stage.

Gloc-9 is now paying it forward. He was that talented youngster waiting for his chance when a Man from Manila took notice and welcomed him into his house, gave him the needed push and guidance to succeed in the cutthroat world of show business. In like manner, Gloc-9 goes out of his way to help young talents, inspiring them to love their craft, and sharing the stage with them to showcase their talent.

Gloc-9 has nothing more to prove as an artist. His awards cabinet is already filled to the brim. Just recently, he was one of the recipients of the prestigious SUDI National Music Award bestowed by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts. Another affirmation of his impact in the industry he loves so much.

He is Aristotle Pollisco, Gloc-9, rapper, songwriter, the blacksmith of words, a true Filipino poet, an icon.

Congratulations and looking forward to many more productive years ahead!

Michael V’s staying power

“Proper timing is needed to become a good comedian,” said Michael.

Courtesy: GMA Network

Comedian-singer Michael V., also known as Bitoy is smiling ear to ear these days and there is one good reason why. He is grateful that their weekly gag show is still airing after more than two decades. Bubble Gang has become the longest-running gag show in the Philippines.

Michael related that he was introduced into the world of show business when he joined the rapping contest in Eat Bulaga many years back. Rap actually brought Bitoy to fame. It opened his doors to the movies and to television. His talent in comedy was tested through his previous stints in Tropang Trumpo, a former gag show on Channel 5.

Good Comedian

Proper timing is needed to become a good comedian, Michael said. “If it’s too early masasayang, if it’s too late hindi matatawa ang tao. Proper timing is needed to deliver the punchline plus, you need the right attitude after you deliver the line.”

How do you come up with your antics?

“I get my ideas from everyday life,” he shared. “Good sources are my community and surroundings. I observe people, I go around. I read books. I watch a lot of movies, TV shows, sitcoms, gag shows as much as I can, and other foreign shows. I watch cartoons a lot. Then, saka ko ini-implement sa foundation ko which is my environment. Na alam ko na pwede sa environment ko at magwo-work sa masa.”

Do you also watch yourself?

“I do, most of the time. I’m my worst critic, I would say. Every time I watch myself, doon ko nakikita ang sarili ko. Sometimes, I would say, ‘My timing was wrong. This line should have been delivered earlier or later. I should not have done this facial expression.’ Iniisip ko na lang palagi that there’s always the next time.”

How do you digest each character you portray?

“First, I have to read the script. So I would know the strength and weaknesses of the character. It would take around a week to have an idea of the character. Then another week para maging ako ang character.”

As a comedian, the oddest character he has done was portraying a lechon. The weirdest character was becoming a bird.  “So what I did was naglagay na lang ako ng tuka.”

Since he was a kid, it has been the dream of Bitoy to become a comedian someday. “’Yong movies ni Nino Muhlach at Dolphy hindi nakakalagpas sa akin,” he said. “But when I was four years old, I wanted to become a waiter. I was really fascinated with the bow tie. When I was able to watch Muhammad Ali on TV, I wanted to become a boxer. Pero that time pinagtatawanan ako kasi ang payat-payat ko. Later on, when I learned to draw, I wanted to become a painter. But then generic among kids to become a movie star someday.”

Michael V. related that his talent in cracking up jokes and making people laugh is inherent in him. No wonder, he remains to be at the top after all these years.

A sunshiny career for Sunshine Dizon

“Whatever I do, I always give my best,” she related from a previous interview, “because not everyone is given a chance to be in showbiz.”

With her recent transfer to Kapamilya Channel (after a 25-year stay with rival GMA-7), veteran actress Sunshine Dizon is determined to stay and excel further in show business. She is set to star in the upcoming teleserye Marry Me, Marry You alongside thespians Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez.

True to her name, Sunshine, in-person exudes a sunshiny disposition. She likewise, sounds very positive about her future. Having spent her early years in show business, Sunshine has acquired the look and attitude of a veteran. “Whatever I do, I always give my best,” she related from a previous interview, “because not everyone is given a chance to be in showbiz.”

An early entry in showbiz

Sunshine had an easy entry into show business because her mom Dorothy was a movie producer. As early as when she was three years old, her mom’s showbiz colleagues had convinced her to include Sunshine in the picture God’s Little Children, her first movie project. Her mom agreed for Sunshine to try her luck in showbiz.

Her mom didn’t go wrong because at a very young age Sunshine has made a mark in the industry. At 12, she bagged the much-coveted Best Child Actress Award from FAMAS. At 13, she became a favorite endorser in commercials. She is hopeful one day she might be able to achieve the status of her idols, Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, and her all-time favorite American actress, Jodie Foster.

Acting-wise, Sunshine shared that she has matured through time. “All the films and shows that I did were all learning experiences.” She is best remembered for her outstanding portrayals in past TV series Ika-6 na Utos, Magkaagaw, Encantadia, and many more to mention.

Fondest childhood memory

Her fondest childhood memory was her trip back to the country from the United States when she failed to bring home with her the giant stuffed toy bear she purchased. “The flight attendants didn’t permit me to carry it on the plane. I threw tantrums. I told them that I would call 911 for child abuse. When I remember that incident, I just realized how stubborn I had been,” recalled the 37-year-old actress.

In private, Sunshine is a homebody and a bookworm. “Magala ang mga mata ko,” she said. “I’m the kind of person who will think a hundred times before I do something. Kaya siguro madalas sumakit ang ulo ko.”

Supportive family

What she values most in life is her family. “Because not everyone can have a family like the one I have, they’re always there for me and they are very supportive of my showbiz career. In the intriguing world of show business, they keep me sane.”

Sunshine is the youngest in a brood of three. She is very close to her other siblings, Richard and Chowtie; and to her mom Dorothy and dad Isagani.

Now that she’s a parent herself, she makes sure to always spend quality time with her two children. It has been an open book about how her past marriage turned out, but despite the chaos and drama, she maintains a good relationship with her estranged husband Timothy Tan for the sake of their children.

Both in reel and real life, Sunshine continues to shine and sounds very optimistic about what the future holds her.
