Heritage and Legacy: Cuartel de Santo Domingo Marks 20th and 25th Year Milestones

From September 24 to 26, 2025, a series of events will honor both the 20th anniversary of the Cuartel’s declaration as a National Historical Landmark, and the 25th founding anniversary of the KCSD as a nonprofit organization.

Heritage, history, and community spirit will take center stage this September as the Cuartel de Santo Domingo and the Kilusan Cuartel de Santo Domingo Inc. (KCSD) commemorate two major milestones with a three-day cultural celebration.

From September 24 to 26, 2025, a series of events will honor both the 20th anniversary of the Cuartel’s declaration as a National Historical Landmark, and the 25th founding anniversary of the KCSD as a nonprofit organization.

“This dual celebration reflects not just the passage of time, but our shared commitment to preserve the rich heritage of Santo Domingo,” said Gemalin Batino, Chairperson of KCSD. “Cultural heritage gives us a sense of community and identity, pride and dignity anchored on a shared past.”

Honoring the Past, Envisioning the Future

The festivities will kick off on Day 1 at the Cuartel’s Admin Building with a Heritage Conference and Launching Ceremonies, featuring keynote messages, performances, and the unveiling of the new Santa Rosa Heritage Magazine. An exhibit titled ‘First of First’—a tribute to Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas—will also be launched alongside KCSD Inc.’s new official website.

“It’s about more than preserving a structure,” Batino noted. “It’s about keeping the stories alive, and making sure that younger generations know why this place matters.”

Day 2: History in Action

On the second day, September 25, the Cuartel grounds will host ‘Acts and Portrayals’ — dramatized vignettes showcasing the Cuartel’s rich legacy. Highlights include:
– The history of Cuartel de Santo Domingo
– Sugar milling and trapiche production in the area
– Agricultural life through heirloom products and friar-led initiatives

These acts aim to educate the public and rekindle appreciation for local traditions and the rural economy that shaped Santa Rosa’s past.

Day 3: A Night of Culture and Community

The final day will conclude with a grand Gala Night: Baile & Concierto at Paseo Premier Hotel. Guests will enjoy dance performances, acknowledgments, and an open floor for community dancing, all while enjoying cocktail snacks.

“This is a celebration not only of where we have been, but where we are going,” Batino said. “We want to highlight our legacy and renew our mission for the future.”

Board of Directors, supporters, and cultural workers of Kilusan Cuartel de Santo Domingo Inc. (KCSD).

By blending historical commemoration with cultural outreach, the event reminds attendees of the Cuartel’s enduring value. The multi-day program invites local residents and visiting dignitaries alike to reflect on Laguna’s past—and inspire commitment to its future.

KCSD’s dual milestone is a testament to years of advocacy, preservation, and community-building. Through exhibitions, living performances, and celebrations, Cuartel de Santo Domingo is not just remembered—it is renewed.

Please direct inquiries to KCSD Inc. or their email at kilusancuarteldesantodomingo@gmail.com.

A Site of Historic Importance

The Cuartel de Santo Domingo is a 19th-century Spanish military barracks, originally built to house the Guardia Civil. Over time, it served multiple roles—from a colonial outpost to a police academy, and even as a detention facility under the PNP. In 2005, it was officially declared a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

Today, the Cuartel stands as one of the few remaining examples of Spanish colonial military architecture in the country. Its thick adobe walls and strategic location continue to inspire historical awareness and preservation efforts.

KCSD, established in 2000, has since grown into a cornerstone of local heritage advocacy. Through educational programs, cultural exhibits, and ongoing restoration projects, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to promote shared patrimony.

“The responsibility to preserve and conserve our heritage for posterity is ours,” Batino emphasized.

With this triple-day affair, the community of Santa Rosa reaffirms its commitment to honor the past, engage the present, and preserve the legacy for future generations.

Seeing Colors of Hope: Ioni Mendoza’s First Solo Exhibit Opens to a Heartfelt Welcome

The walls of Life N’ Arts Gallery came alive with vibrant hues, heartfelt stories, and a shared mission. “Seeing Colors of Hope” is the much-anticipated first solo exhibition of artist and entrepreneur Ioni Mendoza.

More than just an artistic milestone, the event was a celebration of resilience, gratitude, and giving back. Surrounded by family, friends, fellow artists, art enthusiasts, and the team from the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines led by their President Dr. Ivo John Dualan, Ioni welcomed guests into a deeply personal journey. The exhibit was shaped by her own experience of vision loss, treatment, and ultimately, the gift of sight through a corneal transplant.

“I was born with a condition that impaired my vision and came with many insecurities,” Ioni shared. “After years of treatments, I was blessed to receive a corneal transplant from a generous donor through the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines, under the care of the late Dr. Cosme Naval.”

Through her exhibit and every masterpiece, Ioni willingly dedicates part of the proceeds to the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines — an organization that works tirelessly to educate, process donations, advance research, and ensure the best outcomes for both donors and recipients.

An Immersive and Interactive Experience

One of the exhibit’s installations was the interactive canvas, where visitors were invited to share messages of encouragement, hope, and strength. Colorful sticky notes, paper flowers, and origami cranes quickly filled the board. Each one gives a colorful echo of the exhibit’s theme.

Seeing Colors of Hope Exhibit 2025.

Some wrote words like faith, strength, and keep going, while others left heartfelt congratulations and personal reflections. This collective display became an art piece in itself, a living testament to how creativity and community can intertwine.

Colors that Give Back

The exhibit draws inspiration from beauty close to home, much like Monet’s garden in Giverny. Each piece radiates warmth and movement, offering a visual reminder that hope can be found in the everyday.

Through this exhibit, hope extends beyond the canvas. Ioni’s commitment ensures that art lovers can also be part of a cause that restores the gift of sight to others.

Almost anyone can be a corneal donor — young or old, with or without glasses, even those who are blind — as long as the cornea is healthy and free from disease or injury. By pledging to donate your cornea and eye tissue after death, you could one day help restore the vision of someone living with corneal blindness.

Exhibit Extended

For those who missed opening day, “Seeing Colors of Hope” will continue to run at Life N’ Arts Gallery until September 9, 2025. Don’t miss the opportunities to experience the work, leave your message on the interactive wall, and support a cause that changes lives.

SMHCC Tela Tales Initiative Goes Nationwide with a Davao Launch

Following the thread of its Luzon and Visayas legs, SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation’s Tela Tales continues to weave sustainability in its properties one region at a time. Coinciding with the Kadayawan Festival, Tela Tales was officially launched in Davao City, in partnership with its hotel property, Park Inn by Radisson Davao.

Commemorating the occasion were SMHCC Vice President for Quality and Sustainability Ms. Leah Magallanes, Davao City Councilors Hon. Tek Ocampo and Hon. Myrna Ortiz; Department of Trade and Industry Regional Director Romeo L. Castañaga; and Department of Tourism Region XI Assistant Regional Director Judy Colaljo.

REPAMANA designer Dars Juson, featuring his creations for SMHCC and Park Inn by Radisson Davao’s joint sustainability project, Tela Tales.

As a fashionably meaningful and purposeful sustainability project, Tela Tales transforms condemned hotel linens into meaningful fashion, functional pieces, creating a circular economy that bridges hospitality and local communities,” said Ms. Magallanes. Given that hotel linens are one of the top wastes produced by hotels and resorts, this initiative aims to create products that are highly marketable that resonate with target audiences.

Tela Tales has already made waves in other SMHCC properties such as Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo, Bacolod, and North Edsa; Pico Sands Hotel; Taal Vista Hotel; and SMX Manila. Now, it finds a home in Davao. To bring this vision to life, SMHCC and the hotel partnered with Davao-born designer Dars Juson, who studied in the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. He is making his name in the capital City of the Philippines as the co-founder of Manila-based label REPAMANA. Known for transforming discarded textiles into striking fashion, Dars’ philosophy perfectly aligns with the Tela Tales mission.

Kadayawan grazing table featuring ingredients from partners – Malagos Farmhouse and Hijo Farms, along with Davao’s abundant fruits – mangosteen, pineapple, rambutan, jackfruit.

The beneficiary of this effort is Think Outside the Trash, a women-led community group supported by Councilor Tek Ocampo. Under Dars’ mentorship, the women underwent training to create the debut Tela Tales collection—each piece a symbol of empowerment, sustainability, and craftsmanship.

For the first collection, Dars designed a vanity kit, tote bag, and bucket hats, which will be available for purchase at the hotel lobby. The items feature both plain and dyed designs, using the traditional Japanese shibori technique. This method involves binding, folding, twisting, and clamping fabric before dyeing—a process that Dars also taught to the women of Think Outside the Trash.

During the launch, Ms. Magallanes gave a brief presentation on the concept behind Tela Tales, along with other sustainable initiatives implemented by SMHCC as part of its goal to reach Net Zero by 2040. A panel discussion featuring Ms. Magallanes, designer Dars Juson, Councilor Tek Ocampo, and General Manager Sven Toune followed, fostering an open and engaging conversation.

Solaire Resort Entertainment City, the Philippines’ first integrated resort, is known for offering a seamless blend of luxury, entertainment, and Filipino hospitality. With over 800 rooms and suites boasting panoramic views of the Manila Bay or the city skyline, the resort is a haven of comfort and sophistication. Hyun Bin described his stay as serene and memorable, highlighting the elegant accommodations and attention to detail that made it easy for him to relax and recharge. “The hotel is very beautiful,” he noted. “One thing that really stood out to me is the incredible view from my room—especially during sunset. It’s truly breathtaking… The bed is so soft and comfortable, and the whole room feels very calm and private—perfect for recharging after a busy schedule.”

But beyond the luxurious amenities, it was the people who left the deepest impression on him. “What makes the experience even more special is the warm hospitality—especially from the staff at Solaire Resort —who go above and beyond to make me feel at ease. Their kindness and attentiveness truly make me feel at home here.”

Hyun Bin also shared his excitement about sampling Filipino food, particularly the iconic adobo—a dish that had been highly recommended by his Korean friends who previously visited the country. “It was very delicious—rich, flavorful, and definitely something I’d like to try again,” he said. “I’m looking forward to tasting more of the local dishes while I’m here.”

Aside from his stay, the actor also took time to meet lucky raffle-winning fans at a special fan event—many of whom have followed his career for years. “It’s very touching. Meeting my fans here in person and feeling their energy, their smiles, and hearing their cheers—it’s truly overwhelming, in a good way,” he said. “Their support, even from so far away, has always meant so much to me.”

Cyber Crisis Unfolding: PH Ransomware Cases Double, as Reported by Viettel Cyber Security

In today’s hyper-connected digital economy, a single breach can bring an entire business to a halt. The first half of 2025 has exposed just how vulnerable Philippine enterprises are, with 9 ransomware attacks already matching the total for all of 2024.

The country saw 3.7 million stolen credentials and 88 major breach incidents in just six months, with finance and e-commerce platforms falling to phishing scams and healthcare systems under siege via IoT devices as attacks grow more sophisticated and harder to detect.

Viettel Cyber Security, a trusted partner for global enterprises, highlights these growing threats in its 2025 Mid-Year Cyber Threat Landscape Report. Key findings are as follows:

  • AI and deepfakes are fueling hyper-personalized automated phishing attacks.
  • Deepfake voice and video are bypassing traditional verification systems.
  • Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS)makes advanced attacks accessible to low-skill hackers.
  • Fileless malware runs in memory and evades most antivirus defenses.
  • Poorly secured IoT and blockchain platforms are opening new attack vectors.

Several sectors were hit especially hard in early 2025, with education leading at 18.2% as large databases and limited cybersecurity funding make schools easy targets. Government portals followed at 13.6%, often exploited to test new attack methods, while the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector accounted for 6.8% of incidents, facing relentless credential theft and AI-driven phishing. Healthcare, e-commerce, media, and manufacturing were also heavily targeted due to their vast stores of sensitive data.

Serving as a roadmap for Filipino businesses to strengthen defenses in a volatile digital economy, PH businesses should start:

  • Implementing data leak monitoring and adopting Zero Trust models
  • Backing up critical systems to guard against ransomware
  • Enforcing Third-Party Risk Management to secure supply chains
  • Building a strong internal security culture

At the same time, Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are exploiting undiscovered software flaws to break into networks. Cybercriminal groups from Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe are expanding attacks through RaaS platforms, while blockchain tools are being used to hide their tracks.

Viettel Threat Intelligence (VCS-TI) offers expert guidance and early warning systems to help enterprises stay ahead of threats. Download the full report to access deeper insights and actionable strategies.
