Pure Bayanihan targets 1 Million livelihoods to help end poverty

How a non-profit organization embodies โ€˜bayanihanโ€™ one sustainable livelihood at a time.

ย

Pure Bayanihan, a US-registered 501(c)3 nonprofit with a goal of creating one million livelihoods for people living in poverty, is proud to announce the official launch of its nationwide initiative aimed at alleviating poverty in the Philippines through sustainable livelihood programs. With a current poverty rate of 15.5%, down from 18.1% in 2021, the nation still faces significant challenges, with over 17.5 million people living below the poverty line. Limited access to quality education and stable employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas, has hindered many Filipinos from achieving economic stability.

Typhoon Kristine, along with past natural calamities, highlights the Philippinesโ€™ vulnerability due to its location in the typhoon belt and the Pacific Ring of Fireโ€”this reality has fostered a strong sense of community and resilience among Filipinos. Inspired by this spirit, Pure Bayanihan made it their mission to ย tackle systemic barriers faced by communities by promoting skills development, entrepreneurial opportunities, and broader access to essential livelihood support. At the heart of its mission lies the Filipino spirit of โ€œBayanihanโ€โ€”a powerful ethos of collaboration and unity that drives community-driven solutions such as community pantries, donation drives, and disaster relief efforts to support and rebuild affected communities.

โ€œThe fact is that some Filipinos are just one storm away from having nothing; they might also be one hand up away from getting out of nothing. Filipinos, with a little help, could make a big recovery from hardships and lift themselves up.โ€ said Barry Harrigan, Chairman of Pure Bayanihan. โ€œSo, our effort has really been about perfecting the ways in which we could give them a hand up and put them on a good track, and thatโ€™s really what Pure Bayanihan is all about.โ€

Pure Bayanihan has made a significant impact since its founding, positively affecting 50 communities, 1,898 families, and 9,490 individuals across the Philippines. One of its standout programs empowers widows and single mothers through skills training, helping them establish small businesses and achieve financial independence.

The organization is also addressing pressing social and environmental issues. In Baseco, Manila, theyโ€™re turning waste into valuable products, combating both poverty and pollution. Meanwhile, in Iloilo, theyโ€™re supporting Kangkong farmers, boosting their income and contributing to regional food security.

Building on these successes, Pure Bayanihan plans to expand its reach further in the coming years. The organization is actively seeking partnerships with local governments, corporations, and international organizations to maximize its positive impact.

To further its mission, Pure Bayanihan has partnered with PRecious Communications Philippines, an award-winning multi-market integrated communications agency, to enhance outreach efforts.

Upcoming initiatives include traditional hilot healing skills training for indigenous communities in Tanay, Rizal; sugarcane juicing equipment for farmers in Ilocos Sur; and a washing machine vending business program for stay-at-home mothers in Navotas City. ย To support initiatives like these, you can get involved with Pure Bayanihanโ€™s advocacies by visiting www.purebayanihan.org. With all administrative costs covered by their founders and sustaining supporters, 100% of the support they receive goes directly to the fight against poverty, making a meaningful impact in the lives of those in need.

Help alleviate hunger: GlobeOne App now accepts Rewards points donations for Project PEARLS

In celebration of Project PEARLSโ€™ 14th anniversary, Globe and TM customers can now help combat hunger in the country and give disadvantaged children a better life by donating their Rewards points to the organization through the GlobeOne app.

Project PEARLS, a partner of Globeโ€™s hunger alleviation program, The Hapag Movement, has been tirelessly working since 2010 to provide education, empowerment, nutrition, and healthcare to communities in need across Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zambales.

As it enters another year of service, Project PEARLS is expanding its fundraising efforts to reach more supporters and make an even greater impact.

โ€œWe are happy to partner with Globe in offering this convenient yet impactful way for its customers to contribute to our cause,โ€ said Melissa Villa, Project PEARLS Founder and Executive Director. โ€œEvery donation, no matter how small, helps us provide nutritious meals, education, and healthcare to children and families in need.โ€

Globe and TM customers can donate as little as one Rewards point to Project PEARLS, making it easier than ever for individuals to support the organizationโ€™s vital work. This initiative aligns perfectly with the Hapag Movementโ€™s goal of leveraging technology and partnerships to drive collective action for sustainable development.

โ€œWe extend our heartfelt congratulations to Project PEARLS on its 14th anniversary of making a profound difference in communities across the Philippines,โ€ said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe. โ€œTo mark this milestone, we are excited to empower more people to join the fight against hunger by offering our customers the opportunity to donate their Rewards points to Project PEARLS via the GlobeOne app.โ€

In addition to the new GlobeOne app donation channel, Project PEARLS is commemorating its anniversary with other exciting initiatives.

Project PEARLS has launched a virtual charity auction, offering supporters the chance to bid on exclusive items such as a Taylor Swift-signed acoustic guitar, framed NBA jerseys autographed by basketball legends Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Steph Curry, a trip to Tuscany, and more. While primarily targeting US-based supporters, these prizes can be shipped worldwide, expanding the reach of Project PEARLSโ€™ fundraising efforts.

The anniversary celebrations will culminate in a gala event at the end of the month, bringing together some of Project PEARLSโ€™ biggest partners, including Globe and Canva. This event will highlight the organizationโ€™s achievements and reinforce its commitment to creating lasting change in communities across the Philippines.

Globeโ€™s collaboration with Project PEARLS started earlier this year. The organization became an international partner of the Hapag Movement, enabling US-based individuals and corporations to contribute to the cause through the dedicated platform at https://givebutter.com/c/globe_projectpearls/. This alliance has opened up new avenues for global engagement, particularly among the 4 million Filipino-Americans in the United States.

The Hapag Movement, launched in 2022, has already made significant strides in addressing hunger in the Philippines. To date, it has provided food packs to over 95,000 Filipinos and produced 2,662 livelihood training graduates, with 2,361 of them successfully starting their own small businesses.

Despite these efforts, the need for continued support remains crucial. In June 2024, 17.6% of Filipino families reported experiencing involuntary hunger or had nothing to eat at least once, according to the latest Social Weather Stations survey. This is an increase from 14.2% in March 2024.

Hapag Movement and Project PEARLS call on the public to support its various fundraising activities as every contribution helps the organization move closer to its vision of a world where no child goes hungry.

To learn more about how to make a lasting difference in the lives of those most in need, visit Project PEARLS/Hapag Movement website.
