HABI: The Philippine Textile Council is weaving the future

The 14th Likhang Habi Market Fair gathers the countryโ€™s best weavers and artisans, bringing traditions to the next generation.

ย

HABI: The Philippine Textile Council is gearing up for this yearโ€™s Likhang Habi Market Fair, happening at the Glorietta Activity Center from October 18 to 20, 2024.

This is the 14th time HABI is organizing the event, as part of its mission to preserve, promote, and enhance Philippine textiles through education, communication, and research, using public and private resources.

HABI was established in 2009. โ€œWe started it because we realized that there was no textile society in the Philippines,โ€ said HABI founder and chairman emeritus Maria Isabel โ€œMaribelโ€ Ongpin.ย โ€œThe preservation, development and modernization of our Philippine textiles, which are quite varied, quite unique and very colorful, from all over the archipelago.โ€

HABI organizers and exhibitors during the media launch at Discovery Primea Hotel in Makati.

Likhang Habi Market Fair was their first project and it has grown so much over the yearsโ€”from featuring 12 vendors to over a hundred in its recent editions. This yearโ€™s fair gathers weavers, artisans, designers and brands from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanaoโ€”Cordillera, Zamboanga, Ilocos, Socksargen, Negros, Bangsamoro and more.

HABI secretary Rambie Katrina Lim said, โ€œWe realized that many of the weavers and crafters are actually quite isolated, so they need a platform to grow and show their product and tell their story. The market fair is a chance for them to interact with a bigger market.โ€

There are many Likhang Habi Market Fair success storiesโ€”artisans who grow from the grassroots to greatness. The passionate women of HABI find joy in witnessing that growth.

โ€œWe have a lot of examples of that, like Carlo Eliserio and Raquel Eliserio. Now heโ€™s being invited to and attending international conventions and fairs as well. And he also has a place in a department store now, in Rustanโ€™s. Thereโ€™s a progression. We really invest and watch our vendors grow,โ€ said HABI president Mia Villanueva, who started her relationship with HABI as a vendorโ€”her bags and accessories brand MCV Designs participates in Likhang Habi Market Fair.

Adelaida Lim, HABI president emeritus said, โ€œWe have seen many weavers develop into competent entrepreneurs while improving their craft skills.โ€

But itโ€™s just one part of what they do.

Theyโ€™ve published four books on Philippine fabrics and produced three documentaries. They hold the annual Lourdes Montinola Pinฬƒa Weaving; and the Eloisa Hizon-Gomez Abaca Weaving competitions. They teach and give lectures, connect and collaborate with other organizations here and abroad, and educate about and advocate for Philippine textiles and the people behind them.

The people of HABI โ€œenvision a strong Philippine Textile Culture that is vibrant, diverse and very much a part of our modern presentโ€ and their work has helped turn that vision into reality.

Thanks to HABIโ€™s efforts, traditional textiles are no longer viewed as just material for native costumes, theyโ€™ve become part of daily life, โ€œas contemporary attire with a relevant place in current lifestyles,โ€ ย Adelaida said.

Another indicator of their success is the growing interest in weaving and Philippine textiles among young people. For a long time, there was concern that weaving was a dying art, that the next generation wasnโ€™t interested in continuing what those before them had started.

One young weaver, LoveLove Monon, granddaughter of Manlilikha ng Bayan Salinta Monon, is featured in HABIโ€™s โ€œThreaded Traditionsโ€ documentary โ€œMemoirs of a Textile: Inabal of the Bagobo-Tagabawa.โ€

Wanting to push for innovation, HABI also decided to create a category in their Pinฬƒa Weaving Competition for weavers under 30 years old. The yearโ€™s Likhang Habi Market Fair theme, โ€œEarth To Loom: Celebrating Natural Dyes in Philippine Textiles,โ€ is something that also speaks to the younger generation, a generation known for their concern about climate change and passion for sustainability.

Maybe itโ€™s the new generation who will make a difference. And HABI is here to help them make it happen.

Securing the way forward with AI-driven security solutions

Palo Alto Networks, the global cybersecurity leader, held its flagship event Ignite on Tour in the Philippines at the Grand Hyatt Manila. With the theme Cybersecurity for the AI Era, the event was attended by industry partners, customers, and cybersecurity experts to discuss the increasing impact of artificial intelligence on the cybersecurity landscape alongside evolving threat tactics in the Philippines.

ย State of Cybersecurity in the Philippines

As one of ASEANโ€™s fastest-growing digital economies, the Philippines faces significant vulnerability to evolving cyberthreats such as ransomware and AI-driven attacks. Palo Alto Networksโ€™ recent researchย revealed manufacturing as the most targeted industry for ransomware attacks in ASEAN, primarily due to limited system visibility and inadequate network monitoring. This trend resonates with Filipino organizations using operations technology systems, where 76.5%ย experienced attacks in the past year โ€“ based on Palo Alto Networksโ€™ State of OT Security report. Additionally, 70.6% of these organizations are concerned with AI-enabled attacks.

In his keynote address, Steven Scheurmann, Regional Vice President of ASEAN at Palo Alto Networks,ย touched on the rise of AI and its impact on business transformation. He shared, โ€œ2023 is a breakthrough year for AI and it is transforming the enterprise. However, adversaries are also exploiting the power of AI to accelerate, scale and innovate its attacks. With its high Internet penetration rate and use of multi-devices, enterprises in the Philippines are highly susceptible to attacks. To overcome this, Filipino organizations need to build on the strengths of AI to be more secure and provide better visibility and automation into its security processes.โ€

With the rise of AI-powered threats, Palo Alto Networks has introduced Precision AIโ„ข, which incorporates machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) with generative AI (GenAI) for real-time applications, to defend against AI-supported threat tactics. Precision AI is integrated across Palo Alto Networksโ€™ platforms Strataโ„ข, Prismaยฎ, and Cortexยฎ to provide enhanced capabilities for organizations.

DSWD Partners with Palo Alto Networks for AI-Powered Cybersecurity

ย In a briefing with local press members, Assistant Secretary Julius Gorospe, CIO of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), who was also present at the event today, elaborated on how DSWD is safeguarding its digital infrastructure with AI-powered solutions as part of its Digital Transformation (DX) initiative.

DSWD and Palo Alto Networks

DSWD faced security challenges with fragmented cybersecurity measures, server outages leading to operational disruption, and absence of comprehensive incident response playbooks. These issues expanded the attack surface for DSWD, having limited visibility in assessing suspicious network activities and increasing the risk of data breaches due to slower incident response times and inadequate planning.

Partnering with Palo Alto Networks, DSWD leveraged its Unit 42 Incident Response (IR) services to evolve its cybersecurity posture and proactively prevent future threats. The organization also leveraged Palo Alto Networksโ€™ AI-driven solutions like Cortex XSIAM and Cortex XDR to enhance protection and efficiency, and empower its security operations to effectively combat threats.

Counter AI Attacks with AI Defence

The role of AI in cyberattacks and defense is expected to grow even further. Threat actors will continue to refine their AI-driven attack techniques, demanding constant innovation in cybersecurity strategies. To stay ahead of AI-driven threats, organizations should prioritize the following recommendations:

  • Invest in AI-powered cybersecurity solutions:Organizations should allocate resources to implement AI-powered defense systems that can adapt to evolving threats in real time.
  • Collaborate and share threat intelligence: Sharing threat intelligence with industry peers and security communities can enhance collective defense against AI-driven attacks.
  • Foster a culture of cybersecurity awareness: Educating employees about the risks and best practices related to AI-driven cyberattacks can strengthen the organizationโ€™s overall security posture.
  • Stay updated with evolving AI technologies: Organizations should remain informed about emerging AI technologies and their potential applications in both offensive and defensive cybersecurity efforts.

โ€˜Mothers are Motheringโ€™ event spotlights allyship with glam and drag on IDAHOBIT Day

TELUS International Philippines (TIP), a leading AI-fueled customer experience and business process solutions provider, showcased the transformative power of allyship to promote inclusion during its โ€œMothers are Mothering!โ€ glam-up session and discussion. This event celebrated both International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and Motherโ€™s Day, aligning with the companyโ€™s year-round diversity, equality, and inclusivity (DE&I) efforts

Spectrum, TELUS Internationalโ€™s resource group for LGBTQIA+ and other team members and their allies was created to encourage bringing your true self to work every day. With chapters in the Philippines, Central America, and the U.S., Spectrum members participated in activities including a virtual drag competition featuring TELUS International Philippines team member drag queens, which raised funds for the LoveYourself Foundation; hosted sexual orientation, gender identity and expression sessions; gender sensitivity workshops; and celebrated World AIDS Day by hosting virtual HIV 101 sessions and offering on-site free HIV testing and counseling.

โ€œMy journey with allyship began with recognizing the importance of actively supporting and standing up for the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Itโ€™s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected,โ€ shared Warren Tait, TELUS International Global Vice President of Brand, Culture, and Facilities.

TELUS International Philippines invited Drag Race Philippines Season 2 finalist M1ss Jade So, along with her biological mother, Margie Alino, and her drag daughter, Rocky Star, to talk about the importance of allyship in all kinds of relationships. Warren touched on the influence of allyship in his leadership and the workplace culture with Bogs Orial, Executive Assistant to TELUS Internationalโ€™s Global Vice President for Facilities, Brand, and Culture, and APAC CFO.

The โ€˜Mothers are Mothering!โ€™ event showcases electrifying performances from TIPโ€™s dynamic drag queens, Debby Zorriah and Marcova Monroe.

Spectrum of leadership: inclusivity and empathy

ย โ€œCultivating allies can be beyond our friends and family. The key ingredient Iโ€™ve learned and experienced at TELUS International Philippines is the opennessย of the LGBTQIA+ team members to inform everyone, especially us in the leadership team ,โ€ said Warren. โ€œThrough sustained and open collaboration and communication with our LGBTQIA+ community, led by our resource group Spectrum Philippines, weโ€™ve been able to develop empathy, understanding, and allyship in the organization which goes beyond IDAHOBIT and Pride Month. Itโ€™s an ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion that we are deeply invested in.โ€

These insights are consistent with the results of the 2023 Pulsecheck Survey, an annual internal survey assessing team member engagement. It highlighted that programs around inclusivity are constantly being improved, creating a safer and healthier workplace to further team membersโ€™ careers and personal growth. Equal and abundant opportunities are made available to them with the full support of their leaders.

Anne Muรฑoz, the Country Vice-President of TELUS International Philippines, explore the significance of proactive allyship.

Fostering allyship

ย Onย  a personal level, the allyship between drag queen M1ss Jade So and her biological mother, Margie, was strong and evident as they shared their stories of support. M1ss Jade opened up about her struggles growing up as a transwoman, highlighting her momโ€™s consistent support and encouragement. โ€œMy mother is the real queen here! She has been my ride-or-die since day one. And I thank my lucky stars for her โ€˜cause she loves me unconditionally and encourages me to be my true self, whether thatโ€™s fighting for me to go to prom in a gown or helping me prepare my stunning drag looks,โ€ she expressed.

With IDAHOBIT closely celebrated with Motherโ€™s Day, the event took on an even deeper significance for Jadeโ€™s mother. She recounted her experience supporting a transgender daughter in a society where misconceptions about transgender identity persist. Her story ย highlighted the importance of unconditional love and acceptance in creating an environment where individuals can embrace their true identities.

In addition to celebrating diversity and advocating for allyship, the event showcased TELUS International Philippinesโ€™ enduring commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive workplace environment for its team members.
