PPO’s Concert III: Fantasy Explores Depths of Human Emotions

Violinist Diomedes Saraza Jr. took music lovers on a journey of imagination with the third installment of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO)’s 40th concert season, held last December 6, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater.

With his 1972 French violin by Eugene Guinot and Rene Morel (given by Standard Insurance), Saraza Jr. captivated audience with his exceptional skill and artistry on the violin as he effortlessly met the virtuosic demands of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto op.47, D minor.

One of the most challenging in the repertoire in the classic music scene, Sibelius concerto premiered in 1904, with violin teacher Victor Novàček as soloist. With lukewarm reception during its premiere, Sibelius rewrote the concerto in 1905, with Berlin concertmaster Karl Halir playing the revised piece.

Music history has revealed that the concerto was initially created for violinist Willy Burmester, who was then the concertmaster in Helsingfors. After Sibelius passed him over during its two premieres, Burmester never touched the work for the rest of his life.

For the PPO Concert III, Saraza performed with the PPO and took the audiences on a profound journey through the emotional spectrum of life, under the baton of acclaimed music director and principal conductor Maestro Grzegorz Nowak.

Currently the PPO’s guest concertmaster and artist-in-residence, Saraza received both his undergraduate and master’s degrees in music from The Juilliard School as a full tuition scholar. He studied under the tutelage of Juilliard’s Dean Emeritus-violinist Stephen Clapp, American violinist-pedagogue Lewis Kaplan, and Taiwanese-American violinist Joseph Lin (the first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet from 2011 to 2018).

He also finished his master’s in musical arts from Yale University, under Prof. Hyo Kang. During his time in Yale, Saraza was awarded the Brodus Erle Prize 2016 for best violinist of the school year and the Alumni Association Prize 2017 for important community initiatives that he led.

Since winning the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in the Philippines in 2002 at age 12, Saraza has been performing and giving solo recitals both in the Philippines and abroad. He has won international competitions, including New York’s Friday-Woodmere Young Artist Competition and Associated Music Teacher’s League Competition.

He has performed solo internationally with the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, among others, as well as locally with the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and the PPO. He has collaborated as soloist with prominent conductors, namely Darrell Ang, Olivier Ochanine, David Bernard, Gerard Salonga, Yoshikazu Fukumura, Joshua Kangmin Tan, and Haoran Li.

Saraza served as concertmaster of MSO and Yale Philharmonia, as well as an associate and assistant concertmaster of The Juilliard Orchestra and Juilliard Lab Orchestra. He was also an educator at St. Scholastica’s College Manila and the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra.

Saraza has finished his USA recital tour and album recording with Music Foundation founder and Steinway artist Victor Asuncion.

Completing the program for the Concert III: Fantasy, the PPO will perform Gioachino Rossini’s William Tell Overture and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5, op. 64, E minor.

Premiered in Paris on August 3, 1829, the William Tell Overture is part of Gioachino Rossini’s opera Guillaume Tell, which was adapted from Friedrich Schiller’s 1804 drama inspired by the legendary 14th-century Swiss patriot William Tell. In pop culture, this piece is best known for its thrilling final three minutes, which became iconic as the theme music for The Lone Ranger, the masked avenger of the Wild West.

Meanwhile, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64, is often interpreted as a reflection of the composer’s personal struggles and doubts. First performed in 1888, with Tchaikovsky conducting, the symphony is known for its sweeping melodies, dramatic contrasts, and rich orchestration. Over the years, this masterpiece has remained a favorite in concert halls.

Food can bind families together

Evelyn Wise, the hands-on owner of Tia Belle’s, truly believes that food can bind families together, just like how her restaurant is bound to her heart.  “Every time I am in the kitchen, cooking and concocting sauces, I feel like dancing  — dancing with my wok,” she says. Cooking has become both her solace and passion, a privilege she enjoys as people appreciate her food. She has a diverse palate, as her cooking styles reflect the years she lived in Europe before she put up a Filipino-style restaurant in our country. For her, cooking can change the world, one plate at a time.

Ms. Evelyn Wise (a.k.a Tia Belle’s)

True to her word, Tia Belle’s reflects Evelyn’s life values. Her restaurant prioritizes its customers before anything else and seeks to uphold hospitality in all ways. “We ensure we provide an optimal dining experience for our customers by making sure that their dining experience is our responsibility the minute they step into our restaurant,” she elaborates.

The restaurant itself also bears a testament to how wonderful Filipino culture can be – adorned with a homey ambiance, it is surely the place to be during the holidays. It gives you a sense of belongingness in a bigger community – just like Evelyn intended. “We want to give our customers an authentic and genuine glimpse of the Philippines by honoring and delving into the Filipino culture and traditions through our services, atmosphere, art, and food,” says Evelyn.

This Christmas season, Tia Belle’s doors are always welcome for people who want a genuine Filipino experience of the holidays, complete with stellar service, delectable dishes, and good company. The holidays will never be boring for your heart and stomach whenever you’re at Tia Belle’s. To deo or not to deo at night? Global beauty brand Dove on the new skincare debate

While this isn’t news for the skincare savvy, the newest skincare essential might come as a surprise for most. It’s not for the face, it’s not for the body, and no, it’s not the serum we’re used to or have probably heard about.

It’s actually a deodorant.

Ready to call it a night? Your skin isn’t–as a matter of fact, it never is. This is why nighttime skincare routines exist.

Global beauty brand Dove released its first-ever Night Repair Deo Serum, the newest addition to its Dove Radiant + Care Deodorant line. Formulated with trusted skincare ingredients such as niacinamide and hyaluronic acid for radiant underarms, coming in two formats: The dry serum and the roll-on. This once again expands Dove’s wide range of skincare innovations.

The Deo Debate

Since the new product launch, there have been as many raised brows than raised arms.

One question by beauty queen Megan Young in a now-viral TikTok (“do you, and should you, have an underarm care routine at night?”) launched a thousand questions. Other social media personalities such as Marj Maroket, Hannah Pangilinan, and Angelina Cruz also joined in on kickstarting the conversation–enthusiasts tried to make sense of it, doubters frowned and tried to make a case against it, but notably, it got everyone thinking.

Typically used at the start of the day, if not midday, deos are often associated with protecting one from sweat and odor before kickstarting the day. So why put deo on at night, right as you’re about to sleep, when you have nowhere else to be but in the comfort of your bed?

Unilever Dove Deo’s Philippines Business Manager Bea Joson sheds light into what others might have been in the dark about. The skin actually absorbs skincare ingredients better at night, which introduces a strong case for the use of deo during the evening: A deodorant infused with skincare-ingredients becomes as essential as any other nighttime skincare essentials.

“The skin acts to protect during the day, but it repairs and renews at night,” said Joson. “Dove’s newest deodorant serum is designed for nighttime use. Because the skin loses more moisture at night, triggering inflammation and itching, there is a need and a great benefit to apply hydrating ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid at night.”

Putting focus on one of the key ingredients, the brand expounds on how Hyaluronic Acid boosts moisturization to repair the skin barrier at night,  making it a good partner for what our skin is already capable of doing naturally, and ultimately, revealing more radiant underarms.

What Dreams Are Made Of

Dove’s new night serum for your underarms contains 3% niacinamide, its highest concentration of niacinamide in a Dove deodorant yet, boosting the journey to achieving radiant underarms.

It is also infused with hyaluronic acid, which provides moisturization to repair your skin barrier as you sleep, revealing more radiant underarm skin in the morning.

Mix it all together, and you get 40% more radiant underarms in just one month.

“Dove has always worked to be at the helm of skincare innovation that speaks to the direct need of the everyday woman,” shared Joson. “In this case, it’s taking advantage of what our body does for us–the work it renders overtime–even when we’re fast asleep. It’s arguably an untapped need to find the right product with the right ingredients to make the most out of this repair time, and with Dove’s decades-long history of leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding the best in skincare, this new innovation is the next step towards a more radiant tomorrow for Dove girls all over.”

All this in mind, we’d like to think that the score has been settled. There is great merit to adding deodorant to our nighttime skincare routines–which in turn also completes our day-to-night routine with Dove’s Radiant + Care range–and the global beauty brand says all it takes is to “#DreamWithDove”

And with this, the challenge presents itself: As you prepare to rest, put Dove to work.

Project Inclusion Network and JPMorganChase hosts year-end gathering to celebrate inclusion and diversity

Project Inclusion Network (PIN) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPMC) paves the way for disability-inclusion in the country through the advancement of policies. Together, they hold a year-end gathering in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) on December 3, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center Aura, entitled ‘Empowered Summit: Making a Difference with 1%.’

Empowered Summit supports this annual celebration through meaningful dialogues and a showcase of success stories. The afternoon panel discussion focuses on Republic Act No. 10524, the law mandating government agencies to reserve 1% of their workforce for persons with disabilities, while encouraging private corporations to follow suit. This session features disability-inclusion experts from various sectors, including Mr. Randy Calseña from the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), Ms. Carmen Zubiaga of the Women with Disabilities Leap to Women Social and Economic Program (WOWLEAP Inc.), Ms. Linartes Viloria of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and others, to explore how workplaces can achieve the 1% inclusion mandate.

Manish Shah, Managing Director of JPMorgan Chase, and the Disability-Inclusion Champions of JPMorgan Chase, lead the way on disability-inclusion initiatives together with Project Inclusion Network and the Philippine Business and Disability Network.

As a culmination of the event, a thanksgiving dinner is shared by PIN partners to celebrate a great year for the advocacy. Alongside this, PIN’s media campaign entitled “May 1% Ka Ba?”, sponsored by the Austrian Embassy, is officially launched. This campaign seeks to raise awareness about the 1% inclusion mandate by showcasing the stories of self-advocates currently working in different organizations that practice inclusive employment.

Stories from Aileen Gay Sibal, a Deaf self-advocate; Lou Mallari, Rayne Saul Hugo, and Michael Ladrillo, who are persons with orthopedic disabilities; and Benito Manangkil, a person with an intellectual disability, welcome us into their world, which allows diversity to thrive in supportive environments. They represent their employers, Teleperformance and Citihub, which have achieved around 5% and almost 100% of the inclusion mandate, respectively. Both companies are members of the Philippine Business and Disability Network (PBDN), a local platform for collaboration and support that encourages recruitment and retention within the private sector.

Multi-sectoral consultation and dialogues are priority for the Project Inclusion Network as it paves the way for collaboration and policy-driven advocacies together with JPMorgan Chase.

Lastly, we will learn about the lived experiences of Ariel Nuestro, who has cerebral palsy resulting in mobility challenges, and Christian Delos Santos, who has an orthopedic disability. As representatives of the City Government of Mandaluyong, they highlight the importance of government-led initiatives in empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunities within public service.

Stephanie Zubiri hosted the event.
