Under the refreshed leadership with Landco Lifestyle Ventures (LLV), John Hay Hotels ushers in a new era of warmth, community, and holiday magic: symbolized by this year’s Grand Christmas Tree Lighting recently held at the Garden Wing and Forest Wing, respectively, a celebration of hope, renewal, and togetherness.

Landco President and CEO Erickson Y. Manzano at the John Hay Hotels Christmas Tree Lighting.

Manzano.

A Symbol of Hope and Renewal: The Grand Tree Lighting

The season’s highlight is the Grand Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 21, illuminating the highlands with warmth and wonder. More than a dazzling spectacle, this year’s lighting symbolizes John Hay Hotels’ renewed vision under LLV, a commitment to revitalizing heritage destinations, uplifting local communities, and crafting meaningful experiences for generations to come.

John Hay Hotels Holiday Wonderland

This year’s festivities span across John Hay Hotels’ two storied wings: the Garden Wing (formerly The Manor), the Forest Wing (formerly The Forest Lodge) and John Hay Convention Center, harmonized under one magical holiday experience that blends highland charm, festive fantasy, and heartfelt traditions.

At the Garden Wing: A Magical Cirque Christmas

Guests can immerse themselves in a dreamlike holiday escape at the Garden Wing, from mesmerizing light shows and whimsical cirque performances to enchanting evenings that transform the highlands into a winter fantasy.

Cozy bonfires invite warm conversations, while outdoor movie nights and curated food booths offer comforting flavors perfect for the season. Carnival attractions bring childlike joy to every corner, with daily circus booths, a classic merry-go-round, and themed performances adding a touch of playfulness and magic. Whether with family, a special someone, or a group of friends, every moment at The Garden Wing feels like a scene from a Christmas story brought to life.

At the Forest Wing, the Christmas Carnival Spectacle

Revelers are invited to step into a world of whimsy and festive delight, running daily from 11 AM to 10 PM. The holiday spirit comes alive through a vibrant lineup of activities, including holiday harmonies and acoustic nights, cheerful encounters with Santa’s elves and moments with Santa, and cherished traditions such as Simbang Gabi, Misa de Gallo, and Misa de Año Nuevo.

Guests can also unwind during sunset chill-out sessions at the Helipad Summit Garden, enjoy the Christmas Eve Cocktail Party, explore the Christmas Day Carnival Market with exciting giveaways, feast at the New Year’s Eve Dinner and join the lively Countdown, and welcome the new year with the festive Parade of the Three Kings.

Inspired by the Cordillera’s beloved Dap-ayan, where stories are shared and community thrives, the Dap-ayan Spirits is a signature holiday cocktail crafted with Sagada Gin, Tapuy, and a hint of Etag for that smoky, soulful mountain character. More than a drink, it’s a festive toast to heritage, warmth, and togetherness. Enjoy Dap-ayan Spirits exclusively at St. Patrick’s Bar at the Forest Wing.

Holiday Market

The Christmas spirit comes alive with a vibrant holiday market that brings together the heart and soul of the Cordillera. Local artisans, producers, and craftsmen showcase their rich heritage through woven textiles, woodcarvings, hand-beaded jewelry, and farm-fresh delicacies. Guests can also discover the bounty of the highlands, from freshly harvested strawberries and crisp vegetables to succulent fruits and homemade jams, all sourced directly from local farmers.

This curated pop-up market transforms the Garden and Forest Wing into a cozy marketplace, a place to wander, connect with the community, and bring home a little piece of the Cordilleras. It’s more than shopping; it’s a celebration of culture, craftsmanship, and the flavors of the season.

28th French Film Festival Launches New Era of French–Philippine Co-Productions

The 28th French Film Festival marks a historic milestone in Philippine and French cinema as it unveils the inaugural French–Philippine Co-Production Conference, a two-day industry platform designed to catalyze new partnerships, investments, and joint film projects between the two countries.

The two-day event was recently held at SMX Aura, BGC, Taguig City. ,The conference serves as the first major initiative following the signing of the France–Philippines Film Co-Production Agreement during the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 14, 2025, by Gaëtan Bruel, President of the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée (CNC), and Jose Javier “Joey” Reyes, Chairman of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

Strengthening Bilateral Creative Ties

French-Philippine film cooperation has long been a dynamic component of bilateral relations, with Filipino filmmakers increasingly gaining prominence at international festivals and participating in prestigious workshops such as La Fabrique organized by the Institut Français in Cannes and the Cinéfondation of the Cannes Film Festival. Over the years, Filipino productions have benefitted from French producer support and grants including Fonds Sud Cinéma and the Aide au Cinéma du Monde, enabling numerous projects to reach global audiences.

A Landmark Agreement Signed in Cannes

The signing of the co-production agreement now formalizes and expands these opportunities, allowing Filipino producers and directors to access French funding mechanisms, grants, tax incentives, talent networks, and distribution channels, strengthening both creative and commercial pathways. French Ambassador Marie Fontanel delivered the opening remarks, noting that this marks a new era for French–Filipino cinema. FDCP Chairman Jose Javier Reyes and DFA Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Maria Andrelita S. Austria also gave special messages emphasizing that the collaboration enriches cultural ties while supporting creative industries and economic growth.

Spotlight on Award-Winning Filipino Works

The sessions highlighted acclaimed works such as Brillante Mendoza’s Serbis and Kinatay, which earned the Best Director award in Cannes in 2010, Avid Liongoren’s Saving Sally, and projects produced by Bianca Balbuena including Above the Clouds with Pepe Diokno and Filipiniana with Rafael Mendoza. The roundtable also featured industry insights from line producer Martin Arnaldo on De Sang et d’Argent.

French Support Systems and Producer Partnerships

This was followed by a comprehensive presentation of the French Cinema Support System and the implementation framework of the co-production agreement with the Philippines, delivered by Michel Plazanet, Deputy Director for International Affairs at CNC. The afternoon sessions continued with a discussion on applying the agreement in practice, featuring perspectives from the production of Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah, and concluded with a French Producers’ Panel that introduced the companies, filmographies, and future projects of Franck Priot, Angele de Lorme, Natacha Devilliers, Francois Belot, and Xenia Maingot, setting the stage for active development collaboration.

Pitching, Panels, and Premiere of Elsewhere at Night with French Actress Garance Marillier

The second day of the conference centered on project development activities, beginning with one-on-one pitch-dating sessions between French producers and Filipino filmmakers. The program continued with a panel discussion and projection of Elsewhere at Night, a Filipino–Canadian co-production featuring French actress Garance Marillier alongside Filipino cast members Sue Prado, Kyrie Allison, Enchong Dee, and producer Wilfredo Manalang.

French Actress Garance Marillier, one of the most powerful young voices of French feminist cinema is the guest of honor of the 28th French Film Festival. She also graced the Producers Conference for the collaboration of French and Philippine film productions at SM Cinema, SM Aura.

From Cannes to Manila: Call My Manager Takes the Spotlight

Another highly anticipated session is Call My Manager, the Filipino adaptation of the hit French series Dix Pour Cent (Call My Agent). The casting of the Philippine version includes actor Edu Manzano, actress and singer Judy Ann Santos, and a panel discussion ensued with director and producer Erik Matti.

Red Carpet Finale and Gala Screening with Renowned French Actress Garance Marillier

The conference will conclude with a closing ceremony followed by a red carpet reception and gala screening of Dix Pour Cent x Call My Manager in the presence of distinguished guests featuring French actress Garance Marillier and director Brillante Mendoza, celebrating the strengthened cultural and professional bridge between the two film industries.

Creative Economy Impact

Beyond cultural exchange, the co-production agreement is expected to generate significant economic impact, with increased foreign investment in Philippine film production, job creation in creative and technical sectors, enhanced international distribution opportunities for Filipino content, and strengthened positioning of the Philippines as a competitive production hub in Asia. The platform also fosters cross-border knowledge transfer and talent mobility, supporting the growth of the broader creative economy.

Presented by Leading Cultural Institutions

The Co-Production Conference is presented by the Embassy of France to the Philippines and Micronesia and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, in cooperation with the Directors’ Guild of the Philippines, Inc.

A Review of ‘Bar Boys: The Musical’

Where law meets heart – the musical tells us that “Justice is not just a profession; it is a calling shaped by empathy, integrity, and humanity.”

“Bar Boys: The Musical” is a stage adaptation of Kip Oebanda’s 2017 film of the same name. It was produced and staged by Barefoot Theatre Collaborative. The musical had its previous run in 2024. This revolves around a group of four friends who are aspiring lawyers in a law school. They have different personalities, but they share the same goal of changing the justice system in the Philippines.

The musical play presented a more flavorful take than the original film. It brings an in-depth portrayal of the four male protagonists — Erik Vicencio (Benedix Ramos), Chris Abueva (Alex Diaz), Torran Garcia (Jerom Canlas), and Josh Zuñiga (Omar Uddin) leveled up with upgraded characterization. Ramos and his emotional interpretation of Erik did not gain control over his powerful vocal ability, making his performance flawless throughout the show. His outburst at the Bar Exam scene with the song “Lakompake” showcases his rap ability and amazing madness on stage, justifying the character’s fury and grief over his father’s death.

Diaz effectively played Chris as the most outwardly confident among the leads. His natural charismatic and well-spoken portrayal fits him for the role since his fluency in English helps. Uddin’s Josh made the narrative more real. He justified his role as someone with strong idealism. His presence in the storyline balances the tone of the show, showing the perspective of a man providing contrast to the trajectories of the other three characters.

Canlas, however, originated Torran as a closeted character in the show, which is not similar to what Rocco Nacino presented on the film. This makes the musical LGBT-friendly, as though he represents Torran’s arc that involves admitting his feelings and identity to her mother. Torran’s chemistry with the character of Victor Cruz (Gio Gahol) thrilled the audience on how their scenes gave flavor to the show. Gahol handled the role with dignity and depth, breaking the cliched “gay rope” pitfalls. His relationship with Torran is not made overly sexualized but emotionally resonant.

Law school, being represented in the show, pushes each character to the brink — but their friendships keep them grounded. The musical shows that success is empty if it costs you the people who hold you together.

The song “May Singil Ang Pangarap,” which is one of the central thematic numbers, captures the emotional and social cost of pursuing the dream of becoming a successful lawyer. It serves as a musical thesis for the struggles the characters in the show endure, and it works on multiple layers, whether individual, relational, or systemic. It highlights the universal painful truth of every person’s dream demands something in return like money, relationships, and even one’s sense of self.

Shiela Francisco, meanwhile, who played Justice Hernandez, added that motherly effect to the character originated by Odette Khan in the film. She embodied a morally grounded and dramatically rich character. Francisco did not change how Khan’s dramatis persona is perceived by the audience based on the picture. She boosted Hernandez in the musical as the bridge between generations. Her character ties together with the weight of tradition with the youthful hopes of change. Her delivery of “Dear Future Lawyers” song number innately shows how well-trained she is for being a veteran in the theatre arts.

Other cast members include: Juliene Mendoza and Lorenz Martinez (alternating as Paping), Nor Domingo (as Atty. Maurice Carlson), Gimbey Dela Cruz (as Boss Mama), Natasha Cabrera (as Chris’ mother/female professor/judge), and Carlon Motabato (as male professor/law student’s father).

The covers for the main cast include Ian Pangilinan (Chris), Shaun Ocrisma (Victor), Jude Hinumdum (Erik), Chino Veguillas (Paping/Atty. Carlson), and Naths Everett (Justice Hernandez/Boss Mama/Female Professors & others). While the covers are already given, the show also has Ace Polias as the male swing, and Aecy Abne as the female swing.

With Ade Valenzona and Mijon Cortez returning as part of the ensemble, they are joined by Sheena Belarmino, Dippy Arceo, Pappel, Denize Castillo, Keith Sumbi, Ammin Acha-ur, Gelo Lantaco, Daniel Wesley, Elian Dominguez, Curp Adriano, Robe Zamora Dagcuta, Joshua Rico, and Leo Lapitan.

The show is not perfect, but indeed inspirational to all people, regardless if the spectators are law students or not. Some scenes are not rooted in Oebanda’s film. Chris’ father in the film is not depicted as a politician and is not estranged by Chris. Erik’s mother is not really dead in the film too. These changes applied in the show indicated as a theatrical amplification or reinterpretation for dramatic effect.  These insertions by the playwright make the plot more developed and relatable to suit the needs of the stage musical. The  set design is on-point and necessary for all scenes to create realistic storytelling. The musical was apparently written with invectives clearly spoken, mentions of sex, and other mature themes involved, which can be considered PG-13.

In addition, the musical does not only bring in discussions about the aforementioned queer legal-right issues, it also involves the reality—reference to the outside world issues such as the flood control/ghost projects of the government, shades for corrupt politicians built on featured characters, and other several political controversies. This resonates the country’s current situation—calling for justice against injustices. In spite of these contributing conflicts presented in the performance, Bar Boys: The Musical tells us that “Justice is not just a profession; it is a calling shaped by empathy, integrity, and humanity.” It is reiterated to all human beings who want to change a negative society, most especially those aspiring lawyers who aimed to change the country’s spoiled system. It communicates to people to stand firm whatever challenges will come. You may never be ready, but always be prepared.

“Bar Boys: The Musical” was spearheaded by Pat Valera (book and lyrics), Myke Salomon (music), Jomelle Era (choreography), and Pat Valera and Mikko Angeles (direction).

JSAP National Conference 2025 Set to Spotlight Journalism’s Role in Advancing the SDGs

Mark your calendars as the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines (JSAP) National Conference 2025 gathers the country’s brightest young journalists, scholars, and media practitioners for a landmark event dedicated to exploring journalism’s role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Happening on December 9, 2025, at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Bulwagang Balagtas, this year’s conference carries the theme: “Journalism for a Sustainable Future: Reporting the SDGs, Uncovering the Challenges.”

The conference offers a full day of reflection, exchange, and inspiration, highlighting how journalism can drive accountability, awareness, and meaningful action toward sustainable development. Student journalists, educators, and communication professionals nationwide are set to participate in plenary sessions, research presentations, and discussions on the nation’s most urgent issues.

Exceptional Keynote and Plenary Speakers

JSAP 2025 will feature a distinguished roster of speakers addressing critical issues in journalism and sustainable development. This year’s event will be gracefully led by keynote speaker Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Dave Gomez, who will set the tone for discussions on the media’s role in nation-building and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As for the plenary speakers, Dr. Roland Tolentino, fictionist, cultural critic, and former UP CMC Dean; Ms. Joyce Pañares, managing editor of the Manila Standard and UPCMC Glory Awardee; Mr. Jiggy Manicad, award-winning broadcast journalist and documentarist; and Ms. Pia Ranada, Rappler senior reporter, McLuhan Fellow, and investigative journalist.

Collectively, their discussions will traverse the SDGs, investigative journalism, corruption, climate and health challenges, disaster communication, and global influence operations. Through their combined expertise, JSAP 2025 aims to empower young journalists to report with integrity, depth, and a renewed commitment to sustainable and responsible storytelling.

Parallel Sessions: Student Research Presentations

This year’s conference features student-researchers from across the country presenting groundbreaking studies on Philippine journalism’s current landscape from disinformation and ideological battles to environmental crises and geopolitical tensions.

Bringing together student-researchers from across the nation as they spotlight timely, forward-looking studies on the evolving landscape of Philippine journalism — from community engagement and environmental accountability to journalist safety, media literacy, and ethics — all aimed at shaping sustainable, resilient, and future-ready newsrooms.

The conference will also feature parallel sessions exploring diverse aspects of journalism. Parallel Session A – Democracy, Conflict, and Disinformation examines the frames and ideologies shaping Philippine journalism, including territorial sovereignty and global influence operations in political and humanitarian crises. Parallel Session B – Community, Environment, and Ethical Practice highlights efforts toward sustainable and safe newsrooms. Parallel Session C – Digital Disruptions and the Future of News focuses on AI, social media algorithms, virality, and audience trust.

Featured Organizations: Photographers’ Center of the Philippines (PCP) and PressOne.Ph

The Photographers’ Center of the Philippines (PCP) takes an important role in shaping young visual journalists through its special breakout session—Parallel Session on Photo Essays, with the theme “Visualizing the SDGs: Perspectives of Student Journalists in Photo Essays”. This special session features AC Dimatatac, photojournalist, lecturer, and visual storyteller. She will lead an in-depth discussion on how photo essays can champion SDG issues, strengthen community storytelling, and challenge visual narratives in the age of misinformation. Dimatatac will also share techniques on ethical documentation, human-centered storytelling, and the impact of photojournalism in shaping public consciousness.

In partnership with PressOne.PH, another key breakout session will tackle the growing threat of digital manipulation and foreign influence operations—Parallel session on Digital Investigation. With the theme “Battles Beyond the Sea: Investigating Influence Operations and Digital Warfare in the Philippines”, the session will be headed by Nikko A. Balbedina III, John Hurt Allauigan, and Leigh Jenessen San Diego.

This session will decode the unseen battles taking place in the digital sphere—how influence networks are engineered, how narratives are weaponized, and how journalists guard the truth with courage and clarity. The discussion emphasizes the urgent role of young journalists in countering digital deception and safeguarding democratic discourse.

A National Gathering of Impactful Journalism

The JSAP National Conference 2025 reinvites the community of journalists, storytellers, and media scholars to reflect on the past, engage with the present, and envision a sustainable future. Participants can expect a day of insightful discussions, compelling research, and powerful calls to action—redefining what it means to report for impact, relevance, and transformation.

See you on December 9 at the PUP Bulwagang Balagtas!

Together, we shape a sustainable, inclusive, and accountable future for Philippine journalism.
