Fall in Love with Sabang: Palawan’s Best-Kept Secret For Dream Weddings

Raise your hand if you’re dreaming of saying “I do” with the sea breeze teasing your hair and the music of waves in the background. These days couples are choosing the adventure of a destination wedding over a traditional hometown wedding.

What makes destination weddings so special? They’re usually smaller, giving the couple and selected guests a chance to create lasting memories beyond just the wedding day. Some couples choose a destination that reflects their interests, making the wedding a multi-day event with curated activities and tours. And then of course, there’s the potential to save a little money, because of a smaller guest list.

Scouting for the most idyllic, romantic locations

In the Philippines couples are spoiled by the number of beautiful beach destinations they can choose for a wedding. Michelle Solomo Valdez, architect of some of the most memorable wedding celebrations in Palawan through her own company MS Events Management, is a specialist in scouting for the most idyllic, romantic locations such as San Vicente, El Nido and Coron. According to her, the next big thing in destination weddings is a little pocket of unspoilt paradise a short distance from Puerto Princesa City – Sabang Beach.

Events Planner Michelle Valdez loves Sabang for weddings – with Four Points making it magical.

Michelle pointed out that Sabang Beach’s raw natural beauty and feeling of exclusivity make it ideal for intimate weddings. It’s less commercialized than other beaches,  and its untouched shore with dramatic mountain backdrops make a beautiful setting for photos. The Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as fun activities like a mangrove tour, ziplining, nature trekking, visiting the Sabang Waterfall, or island hopping to the private Isla Rita will ensure a wedding that will be talked about for years by anyone who attends.

Wedding parties have several options to book into for their stay on Sabang Beach. The most premium is the Four Points by Sheraton Palawan, Puerto Princesa. Michelle mentions that the hotel’s beachfront, with its stunning sunset view and wide open space make it a favorite for ceremonies. Other popular scenic spots include the Sabang Mangrove Paddle Tour photoshoot area, and dramatic visuals from viewpoints overlooking the limestone cliffs.

Four Points Palawan is located in idyllic Sabang Beach.

Aside from its breathtaking natural wonders, Palawan has a rich cultural heritage and traditions. Couples can incorporate some of these in their plans. Michelle has executed weddings that showcased indigenous Cuyonon musical traditions; she likes to use native elements such as woven banig accents or shell-based souvenirs. Aside from fresh seafood, she suggests adding local delicacies like lato (sea grapes) or  the “fear-factor” tamilok (woodworm) to the menu for a unique touch.

A rare combination of modern luxury and natural beauty

The Four Points by Sheraton Palawan, Puerto Princesa is one of Michelle’s top choices for a wedding venue. “It offers a rare combination of modern luxury and natural beauty,” she shared. “Couples truly appreciate the blend of comfort and an authentic tropical island feel.”

Value for money wedding packages

The hotel has wedding packages that offer value for money and can ease a couple’s anxiety about organizing a destination wedding. Their wedding venues include the beachfront for a maximum of 100 guests, the Lawn and Gazebo that can accommodate up to 150 guests, and the Ballroom which has a capacity of 300 guests and boasts of a hi-tech built-in LED wall.

For a limited period, discounts from Php10,000 to Php30,000 are being offered on their Balayong Intimate Package, Pawikan Wedding Package (good for 50 persons), and Pearl Wedding Package (good for 100 persons).  The Pearl Wedding Package is the hotel’s premium offering. It includes 2-nights stay in a Suite room for the bride, an overnight stay in a Deluxe Pool View room for the groom, the choice of an indoor or outdoor ceremony and reception, a basic lights and sound system, the use of the LED wall, among others. The couple can choose between a Filipino or an International buffet menu. The hotel adds a 2-layered wedding cake, one round of the signature tarragon iced tea, and a bottle of champagne to use for toasting. Cocktail hour is included in the package as well, with a mobile bar set-up, a 1-hour open bar set-up for non-alcoholic beverages, coffee and tea, plus some hors d’ oeuvres. And there’s more! The hotel has also included a complimentary one hour signature couple’s massage, and the use of the hotel grounds for an engagement or pre-wedding photoshoot.

There’s also a honeymoon package worth Php45,000++ that includes 2 nights accommodation in a Suite Room, buffet breakfast for 2 at Evolution, a welcome drink, a four-course dinner for 2 plus a bottle of prosecco and a romantic outdoor dinner set-up, hotel credits worth Php5,000, 20% off on spa services, and late check-out (subject to availability).

Couples who are qualified BDO credit card holders have the opportunity to avail of a Celebrate Now, Pay Later promotion and pay wedding expenses on installment. The promotion allows couples with a minimum spend of P500,000 on a wedding package to pay with 0% interest on a 3 months term. It has add-ons such as 20% off on the best available room rates, and 10% off on in-room dining and spa services with a minimum spend. The offer lasts until December 15, 2025.

A dedicated events team

The Four Points by Sheraton Palawan, Puerto Princesa has a dedicated events team. “They’re professional, responsive, and hospitality-driven,” Michelle shares. “They understand the unique needs of wedding guests and work collaboratively with our planning team. It’s the kind of support that allows couples to enjoy a stress-free, beautiful wedding day.”

With a team that is willing to go the extra mile from customizing menus to making special requests possible, and provides efficient and heartfelt service, it’s no wonder that the Four Points by Sheraton Palawan, Puerto Princesa is a top choice for couples and wedding organizers. Guests can be sure that any challenges that suddenly appear will be handled.

For couples planning a destination wedding in Palawan, choosing the Four Points by Sheraton Palawan is the first and easiest step. Their wedding packages, promotional offers, and capable team reassure couples that the key components of putting a destination wedding together are already in place. After that, it’s just a matter of enjoying and making beautiful memories of the most important day of their lives.

CCP’s National Theatre Live explores mortality and morality in tragic drama classics Hamlet and A Streetcar Named Desire

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), through its groundbreaking program CCP National Theatre Live, traverses the complex human mind in classics “Hamlet” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” this July.

Shot live from the National Theatres in London, Hamlet returns to the Philippine shore this July 29, 6:00 p.m., at Glorietta 4 Cinema 4 in Makati City, while A Streetcar Named Desire will premiere at the Ayala Malls Vertis North & Ayala Malls Central Bloc, Cebu on the same date and time.

The downward spiral of a vengeful son

Watch Prince Hamlet’s slow descent to madness after his father’s ghosts reveal the truth about his own death. Academy Award-winning actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) plays the titular character in William Shakespeare’s most famous play.

Directed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, this version of Hamlet seems to dissect the Prince of Denmark and his darkening world with political precision and psychological insight. The staging of the Shakespearean tragedy has been hailed for its acting and visual modern setting, emphasizing the continuing relevance of the classic play in today’s generation.

This world-renowned Elizabethan classic explores the complexity of the human psyche and the consequences of love, revenge and grief. For its broadcast debut in 2015, Hamlet broke all records and became the fastest-selling event in London theater history. Tickets were sold out before rehearsals at the theater even began.

What desire does to the mind

Gillian Anderson (Sex Education), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), and Ben Foster (Lone Survivor) lead the cast in Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece: A Streetcar Named Desire.

A Streetcar Named Desire

In this play, as Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace. But her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski.

From visionary director Benedict Andrews, this acclaimed production was filmed live during a sold-out run at the Young Vic Theatre in 2014.

Published in 1947, during the aftermath of the Second World War, this masterpiece revolves around the taboo themes of class tensions, female sexuality, homosexuality, and male domination – all of which simultaneously coexisted with the social dilemmas of the time.

A Streetcar Named Desire had its first staging on December 3, 1947, with the performance ending with a short, surprised silence before a thunder of applause that lasted 30 minutes.

Bringing London’s bests to the Philippine screens

Committed to the preservation and promotion of the arts, CCP’s National Theatre Live, in partnership with National Theatre Live London and Ayala Malls Cinemas, aims to make world-class theatre performances more accessible to Filipinos and ingrain a deeper appreciation for the performing arts.

Since its launch in June 2009, National Theatre Live broadcasts the best of British theater live from the London stage to cinemas around the world. NTL films their plays in front of live theater audiences, but optimized for the big screen and made accessible to theater fans outside of the United Kingdom.

Regular ticket prices are PHP300 in Makati and Cebu, and PHP350 in Vertis North, with special ticket price for students at PHP150 upon presentation of valid ID. Visit the cinema ticket booth or book online via www.sureseats.com.

To get the latest updates on CCP’s National Theatre Live and other events, follow the official CCP social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Visit the CCP website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) for more news.

Art, Advocacy, and a Vision Reborn: Unveiling Ioni Mendoza’s First Solo Exhibit

Ioni Mendoza is preparing to debut her first solo show, “Seeing Colors of Hope,” on August 9 at Life ‘n Arts Gallery in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. But this exhibit is more than a personal achievement — it’s a tribute to second chances, and a powerful reminder of how art can give voice to purpose.

As she approaches her 50th birthday, artist and entrepreneur Ioni Mendoza is stepping into a long-awaited milestone with heart, hope, and bold brushstrokes.

After more than a decade of painting and years of joining group exhibitions, Ioni is preparing to debut her first solo show, “Seeing Colors of Hope,” on August 9 at Life ‘n Arts Gallery in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. But this exhibit is more than a personal achievement — it’s a tribute to second chances, and a powerful reminder of how art can give voice to purpose.

“I’ve been looking forward to this moment for so long,” Ioni shares. “It’s a personal milestone, and I wanted it to be more than just a showcase. I wanted it to mean something.”

That meaning comes from a deeply personal experience: Ioni is a corneal transplant recipient. For years, she lived with poor eyesight, quietly navigating a world blurred by physical limits. Until one person’s selfless act—the gift of corneal donation—allowed her to see clearly again. That moment changed everything. And now, through her first solo exhibit, she’s telling that story with color, compassion, and courage.

With “Seeing Colors of Hope,” Ioni is using her platform to raise awareness about corneal donation, an issue that often goes unnoticed but has the power to change lives. A portion of the exhibit’s proceeds will be donated to a foundation supporting patients who need financial assistance for transplants. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

“It’s a cause close to my heart because I’ve lived through it,” she says. “I want people to see what’s possible when someone chooses to give the gift of sight.”

Her collection features works created across the span of her artistic journey. Many of them painted this year specifically for this exhibit. A blend of Eastern and Western influences defines her style, with techniques drawn from impressionism and traditional Chinese Shui Mo painting. She works with watercolor, acrylic, and ink on rice paper and canvas, combining vibrant colors and fluid textures that reflect movement, emotion, and life’s transience.

Having started painting seriously in 2010, Ioni took time off from art for several years before returning with renewed purpose. The pieces in this exhibit, she says, are a testament to that creative comeback.

“You just do your work,” she says. “Even if you stop for a while, you come back to it. One piece at a time, until you find you have something worth sharing.”

Her dual life as an artist and the owner of a consulting firm speaks to her belief in the “portfolio life” that you can pursue creativity and business, passion and practicality, all at once. The same discipline and courage she applies in business, she brings to her art.

But what ties it all together is Ioni’s desire to inspire — not just visually, but meaningfully.

“As a woman in the art world, I want to show others, especially those with limitations or fears, that you can still pursue your dreams. You can leave something beautiful behind,” she says.

That’s why “Seeing Colors of Hope” isn’t just an exhibit. It’s also an invitation to reflect.

As Ioni prepares to welcome guests to this milestone event, she is filled with gratitude for her supportive family, the friends and mentors who helped bring her vision to life, and the challenges that made her stronger.

“Pursuing your passion has no age limit,” she says. “If your heart is in it, and you believe in what you’re doing, just go for it.”

Through the exhibit, Ioni also hopes to inspire a deeper commitment to organ donation.

She encourages guests and readers alike to help restore the vision of someone living with corneal blindness by pledging to donate their cornea and eye tissue after death. “Almost anyone can be a donor—young or old, with or without glasses, even those who are blind—as long as the cornea is healthy and free from disease or injury,” she says. It’s a quiet but powerful way to give hope, long after we’re gone.

Ioni Mendoza’s first solo exhibit, “Seeing Colors of Hope,” opens on Saturday, August 9, 3:00 PM at Life ‘n Arts Gallery, Solenad 3, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Entrance is free.

SMHCC’s Park Inn Property in Davao Recognized as the First DOT-Accredited Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Establishment in the Davao Region

SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) announces Park Inn by Radisson Davao’s recent recognition by the Department of Tourism (DOT) as the first Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Establishment in the Davao Region. This milestone underscores the hotel’s strong commitment to inclusive hospitality and culturally sensitive service.

This distinction is granted to DOT-accredited properties that meet clearly defined standards—ranging from religious considerations to dietary accommodations.

These measures include providing prayer mats, installing Qibla direction markers—which indicate the direction of prayer and ensure Muslims are united in facing the same point during worship, placing Qur’ans in guest rooms, and offering flexible meal options upon request, such as strictly no-pork or other Muslim-friendly alternatives. The hotel also maintains a dedicated non-pork station at its daily breakfast buffet and ensures that team members are trained in culturally respectful service.

Muslim team members within the kitchen and food & beverage service teams further strengthen this commitment. Their presence fosters greater cultural awareness and attentiveness to guest needs, often providing an added level of reassurance to Muslim diners. Guests can also interact with servers in familiar dialects, creating a friendlier, more welcoming environment that enhances the overall comfort of their stay.

The official certificate was awarded by DOT Region XI Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan to the hotel, with General Manager Sven Toune, Director of Sales and Marketing Liza Gamo, and Front Office Muslim representative Razul Gregorio receiving it on behalf of the team.

Park Inn by Radisson Davao’s Executive Sous Chef – Chef Vance Bolivar during the Halal Friendly Culinary Olympics last June 20 at the SMX Convention Center Davao.

Further demonstrating its advocacy for inclusive hospitality, Park Inn by Radisson Davao also took part in the Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo 2025, which was held at SMX Davao, another SMHCC-owned property, last June 18-20, 2025 as one of the patron sponsors and exhibitors.

The event concluded with the Halal Friendly Culinary Olympics, where the hotel’s Executive Sous Chef, Chef Vance Bolivar, showcased his creative rendition of Tiyula Itum through the Tiyula Itum Steak Medallion—a modern interpretation of the traditional Tausug dish. Typically served as a soup, Chef Vance reimagined it as a deconstructed plate by searing a tender cut of beef tenderloin and finishing it with a rich, dark sauce made from charred coconut and spices. The dish highlighted authentic flavors while demonstrating refined culinary techniques and elegant presentation.

Tiyula Itum Steak Medallion by Chef Vance Bolivar.

Chef Vance drew inspiration from Chef Aira, a member of his culinary team who is Tausug, infusing the dish with authentic cultural roots. The entry earned 2nd place, underscoring the team’s culinary creativity, cultural respect, and growing expertise in Muslim-friendly food preparation.

The Department of Tourism Region XI commended the hotel for setting a standard in the local hospitality industry and for its pivotal role in making the Davao region a more accessible destination for travelers.

Ultimately, this recognition reaffirms Park Inn by Radisson Davao’s position as one of the trailblazers in inclusive hospitality, inspiring other establishments to follow suit. After all, building a more welcoming and culturally considerate tourism landscape is not just good practice—it is good hospitality.

Reflect and Reconnect with the ‘Of Art and Wine’ Series: ‘The Light That Never Goes Out’ Exhibit at Conrad Manila

The hotel opens its latest art collection that explores spiritual journeys through color, texture and light.

Conrad Manila unveils the 36th edition of its highly acclaimed ‘Of Art and Wine’ Series titled “The Light That Never Goes Out”, featuring the works of abstract expressionist Coeli Manese. Presented in collaboration with Space Alt, the exhibit runs from July 15 to September 13, 2025, and invites guests to pause, reflect, and reconnect through a vibrant display of color, texture, and emotion.

“Coeli’s abstract works align beautifully with Conrad Manila’s design philosophy – bold, intuitive, and layered with meaning. Her ability to translate inner emotion into visual form invites thoughtful connection, something we believe our guests deeply value,” shares Fabio Berto, general manager of Conrad Manila. “Through The Light That Never Goes Out, we continue our mission to showcase contemporary Filipino talent in a setting that inspires both introspection and conversation.”

This solo exhibition unfolds across three themes: Eternal Light, symbolizing an enduring presence beyond what is visible; Inner Illumination, reflecting the quiet force of insight and personal transformation; and Resilient Hope, portraying faith’s quiet triumph over adversity. Coeli Manese’s nuanced use of mixed media and color deepens this narrative, with each hue emotional and symbolic resonance – Payne’s grey for wisdom and growth, turquoise for healing and renewal, and burnt sienna for humility and devotion. Through this palette, her works become more than visual expressions, they are contemplative spaces for grace, reflection, and renewal.

“The artworks in this collection are a deeply personal reflection of my journey through faith, resilience, and creative awakening,” says Coeli Manese. “Each piece is born from moments of quiet introspection, guided by the enduring presence of divine love and light. Through symbolic colors and layered textures, I hope to evoke a sense of peace and spiritual connection. May this collection illuminate your own path and stir within you the same hope and wonder that inspired its creation.”

Coeli Manese at Gallery C with her “I Choose You” painting.

The ceremonial ribbon cutting which marked the official opening of the exhibit was led by Elizabeth Sy, President of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation; Peggy Angeles, Executive Vice President of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation; Brigido Simon Jr., Guest of honor; Lucky Ou, Conrad Manila’s Director of Operations, and featured artist Coeli Manese.

“The Light That Never Goes Out” will take its viewers to a contemplative journey starting July 15 to September 13, 2025, at Gallery C, located on the third level of Conrad Manila. Through a series of mixed media works, Coeli Manese invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the spiritual currents that guide us.

With the theme “Paths & Bridges: Leading the Way and Building Continuity,” this year’s Virtus Awards serve as both tribute and challenge: honoring the trailblazers who have defined Philippine hospitality while challenging today’s leaders to build new bridges of knowledge, mentorship, and innovation toward a future shaped by younger professionals.

“It’s a vision that aligns with HSMA’s core educational pillar and the industry’s broader goals of travel recovery, tourism growth, wellness, and sustainable leadership development,” said Loleth So, HSMA president.

The official launch coincided with HSMA’s General Membership Meeting at Fairmont Makati, featuring keynote speaker Therese “Gang” Badoy Capati, president of Rock Ed Philippines and trauma therapist. Her presentation, “Rock the Talk,” addressed the vital need for effective communication across multi-generational teams in today’s rapidly evolving hospitality landscape.

HSMA Board of Directors at the Virtus Awards Launch July 15.

“Gang Capati shared compelling insights on bridging the generational divide within our teams,” says Rose Libongco, Virtus Awards chair. “This responds directly to the industry’s call for more coherent and collaborative teamwork. We encourage leaders to bring their teams, the new generation must understand the journey that brought us here, just as we must understand the paths they are forging.”

The Virtus X-factor: Going beyond performance

As in previous years, the 11th Virtus Awards continues to seek individuals and teams who go beyond delivering results in order to influence genuine change. The coveted X-factor encompasses not only exceptional performance but also the courage to innovate, the ability to mentor, and the vision to lead with empathy and foresight. “Whether reviving destinations, building new markets, or creating campaigns that restore traveler confidence, Virtus XI honors those who redefine industry standards and elevate the bar for excellence,” adds Ms. Margarita Munsayac, HSMA chair.

This year’s edition introduces enhanced judging criteria that reflect post-pandemic travel realities, an expanded network of industry partners, and a platform for sharing stories of resilience and innovation. These updates position Virtus XI as potentially the most meaningful and impactful edition in the program’s history. There will still be three solo awards:  Outstanding Sales and Marketing Associate, Outstanding Sales and Marketing Manager, and Outstanding Sales and Marketing Leader.  The sole group category is the Institutional Award for Most Outstanding Marketing Campaign of the Year.

Properties and hotel groups that have taken home multiple Virtus Awards include The Bellevue Hotels and Resorts, Chroma Hospitality Group, Crimson Hotel Filinvest City, Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, and Conrad Manila.

Last year, the Virtus Award for Outstanding Sales and Marketing Associate was given to Belmont Hotel Manila eCommerce executive Mika Paula Bustillo and The Ascott Limited assistant manager for Content & Graphics Christian Paulo Morales. Midas Hotel and Casino senior sales manager for Rooms Ma. Fe Pulga received the Virtus Award for Outstanding Sales and Marketing Manager, and the honor of Outstanding Sales and Marketing Leader was bestowed upon Erwin Fidel Doña III, Director of Marketing and Communications at Novotel and Ibis Styles Manila Araneta City.

Megaworld Hotels & Resorts won the Institutional Award for Most Outstanding Marketing Campaign of the Year, for its “The Sampaguita” campaign.

Cultivating tomorrow’s leaders today

Beyond its role as an awards platform, Virtus has evolved into a movement for excellence and mentorship. Through strategic educational initiatives, including this year’s keynote and ongoing thought leadership programs, HSMA encourages member properties to develop the next generation of marketers who are digitally savvy, emotionally intelligent, and culturally sensitive.

“We are intentional about building continuity,” emphasizes Ms Libongco, HSMA Virtus Awards Chair. “This year’s program isn’t just about celebrating today’s stars, it’s about illuminating the path for tomorrow’s leaders and ensuring our industry’s knowledge and values transfer seamlessly across generations.”

HSMA Expands its ranks with new members

The HSMA also proudly welcomed its newly inducted members this year, further strengthening its network of tourism and hospitality professionals across the country. They are the following: (1) Tag Hotels & Resorts  – represented by Mayette Sagales-Delfin, Director of Sales and Marketing; (2) Via Appia Tagaytay  – represented by Dr. Richard dela Rosa, Chairman; (3) Sol Y Viento – represented by Shanen Sultaire Nogus, Director of Sales and Marketing;  (4) Rancho Bernardo Luxury Villas – represented by Corinna Reyes, Director of Sales and Marketing; (5) Alpha Suites – represented by Elgie Bryan R.
