Philippines to Host MarketHub Asia 2027: A Milestone on Digital Tourism and Global Connectivity

Mactan, Cebu, Philippines — The Philippines is set to host MarketHub Asia 2027, an exclusive by-invitation-only global TravelTech and tourism marketplace. This marks the first time the prestigious international business-to-business conference will be held in the Philippines.

Slated for the first quarter of 2027, the 6th edition of MarketHub Asia will convene approximately 400 global client-partners, thought leaders, senior decision makers, and digital travel innovators from 16 international source markets, including the Middle East, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and Australia, among others.

“With the majority of global tourism transactions now taking place online, it is timely for the Philippines to take a more strategic and proactive approach in strengthening our digital visibility,” said Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco.

“By engaging the world’s leading digital distribution partners, we expand our global reach, improve ease of access, and create stronger pathways for inbound travel to the Philippines.”

HBX Group officially announces Mactan, Cebu, Philippines as the host destination of MarketHub Asia 2027. In photo (from left): David Amsellem, Chief Distribution Officer, HBX Group; Cleofe Albiso, Managing Director, Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR); Sharlene Batin, Assistant Secretary, Department of Tourism; Loleth So, Group Commercial Director, MHR; Asha Sumputh, CEO and Founder, Waterlily Project Ltd.; and Xabi Zabala, Chief Sourcing and Operations Officer, HBX Group.

“This milestone is significant for the Philippine hotel and tourism industry because its impact extends far beyond a single sector,” the Tourism Chief added. “Global events such as MarketHub create a ripple effect across the entire tourism value chain—from airlines and airports, to hotels, transport providers, food and beverage enterprises, tour operators, technology partners, and local communities. Hosting MarketHub 2027 reinforces the importance of working together as one tourism ecosystem to deliver inclusive and sustainable growth.”

Representing HBX Group, Xabi Zabala, Chief Sourcing and Operations Officer, and David Amsellem, Chief Distribution Officer, underscored the organization’s core strengths and mission. “At HBX Group, our focus has always been on building the digital foundations that allow travel to move efficiently across borders,” Xabi Zabala said. “Our strength lies in our global network, our advanced e-commerce infrastructure, and our ability to connect thousands of travel products and distributors through trusted, scalable platforms.”

“As we continue creating opportunities that connect markets and destinations at scale, the Philippines stands out as a market with so much for the world to discover,” David Amsellem added. “There is real depth and diversity here, supported by an ecosystem that is increasingly ready to engage globally. MarketHub Asia 2027 allows us to connect that potential to our worldwide network in a meaningful, structured, and sustainable way.”

The selection of the Philippines as host also affirms its steady advancement as a competitive Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) destination in Asia. Continued investments in convention infrastructure and event-ready facilities have strengthened the country’s capacity to stage high-level global events. At the same time, the Filipino culture of hospitality—characterized by warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail—adds a distinct human dimension that elevates every gathering into a meaningful and memorable experience.

Instrumental in bringing MarketHub Asia 2027 to the Philippines is Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, the country’s largest homegrown hotel operator, which will host the event within Megaworld’s Mactan Newtown, a master-planned township designed to support integrated business and leisure travel.

Delegates will be accommodated at Savoy Hotel Mactan and Mercure Mactan, with conference sessions to be held at Mactan Expo, Cebu’s newest large-scale convention and exhibition venue.

Mactan Expo has already demonstrated its capability to host world-class events, having recently served as a key venue for the ASEAN Tourism Forum held in January 2026—providing added assurance of the Philippines’ readiness to host high-level international gatherings.

As one of the more tangible outcomes of the ATF 2026, the three-day TRAVEX 2026 generated PHP 1.43 billion in sales at the Mactan Expo. The ATF meetings among Southeast Asian NTOs and dialogue partners also took place in Cebu City at the NUSTAR Convention Center, the largest venue outside Metro Manila, reinforcing Cebu’s growing reputation in the MICE sector.

Cleofe Albiso, Managing Director of Megaworld Hotels & Resorts and President of the Cebu MICE Alliance, expressed pride in supporting the initiative.

“More than a responsibility, hosting MarketHub Asia 2027 is a privilege and an opportunity to give global industry leaders a compelling reason to rediscover the Philippines,” Albiso said. “Our role is to help create an environment where meaningful conversations take place, partnerships are formed, and global leaders are inspired by the depth of experiences the country can offer.”

She noted that MarketHub has traditionally been staged in globally celebrated destinations. “MarketHub has been hosted in destinations known for setting benchmarks in travel and tourism. With the most recent edition successfully concluded in Bali, expectations are understandably high,” Albiso added. “The Philippines is prepared to deliver an experience that is both professionally executed and distinctly memorable.”

In the first quarter of 2027, Mactan Island in Cebu, Philippines will welcome approximately 400 global client-partners, senior decision-makers, and digital travel leaders from 16 international source markets for MarketHub Asia 2027.

As the Philippines prepares to host MarketHub Asia 2027, the event underscores the country’s strategic push to strengthen its position within an increasingly digital and interconnected global tourism marketplace.

The TravelTech and tourism conference is expected to expand livelihood opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by attracting both domestic and international tourism investments through business-to-business meeting opportunities, further increasing tourist spending on activities, experiences, food, and services.

Through this platform—anchored on data-driven connectivity, digital distribution, and business-to-business collaboration—the Philippines deepens engagement with international partners, expands its global reach, and advances its competitiveness in the evolving travel landscape.

MarketHub is HBX Group’s premier platform for advancing dialogue, collaboration, and innovation—bringing together the global players that power travel bookings through digital distribution, data-driven connectivity, and business-to-business e-commerce.

The Power and Beauty of Vocal Prowess in PPO CONCERT VII this March

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra continues its landmark 41st season with its seventh concert on March 13, 2026, 7:30 pm, at the Metropolitan Theater. Led by music director and principal conductor Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, the evening features British soprano Katerina Mina in a program that showcases the orchestra’s remarkable versatility and artistic excellence.

With the concert season featuring masterworks, world premieres and collaborations with top local and international artists, this upcoming concert, billed as CONCERT VII: OPERA blends classical repertoire with pieces that highlight the power and beauty of the vocal prowess.

Versatility in Italian, Swiss, German, and Filipino Notes

Featured works are Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino: Overture, and La forza del destino: Pace, pace mio Dio; Italian composer Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier – La Mamma Morta; Italian composer Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca: Vissi d’arte; Swiss composer Stephan Hodel’s Angel of Fire; and German composer Richard Wagner/Filipino composer Jeffrey Ching’s Ring Symphony.

A four-act opera, La forza del destino (translated as The Force of Destiny), premiered in 1862 in St. Petersburg. Based on a Spanish drama, it follows Leonora and Alvaro, whose forbidden love is destroyed by fate, resulting in accidental deaths, family revenge, and a tragic, dramatic climax.

La mamma morta is a famous soprano aria from Act 3 of Giordano’s 1896 verismo opera Andrea Chénier. Sung by the character Maddalena di Coigny to Gérard, the aria recounts how the lead character’s mother sacrificed her life to protect her child during the turmoils of the French Revolution.

Vissi d’arte is a famous soprano aria in Act II of Puccini’s Tosca. Blending dramatic, often tragic storylines with lush, melodic, and emotional music, the aria is sung by the titular character as she laments and questions why God has abandoned her despite her piety.

Ring Symphony is a large-scale orchestral work of Jeffrey Ching based on Richard Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung cycle.

Arias from Verdi, Giordano, Puccini, and Hodel

Soprano Katerina Mina will grace the stage for PPO Concert VII this March, performing masterpieces by Verdi, Giordano, Puccini, and Hodel. Among the highlights is Hodel’s “Angel of Fire,” a piece originally featured on Mina’s 2018 debut album. The work was composed specifically for Mina after she shared some of her poems with Hodel, which he then set to music. Notably, her 2018 album was recorded under the baton of Maestro Grzegorz Nowak and was even presented to King Charles of Britain.

Born in Cyprus and based in London, Mina is a prizewinning artist renowned for her powerful stage presence and wide-ranging repertoire, from Verdi and Puccini to Wagner and contemporary works. She recently starred in the world premiere of Three Women and has performed leading roles in classic operas, including Turandot, Tosca, Brünnhilde, and Isolde.

Mina’s vocal performances through the years drew raves from various critics, citing her “deeply passionate vocal sound,” having “added layers of depth and visualisation to the work that any singer coming after her will be hard put to replicate…”, with a “mature voice that has a given place in any Music Hall. Critics praise her as “one of those clear-as-a-bell soprano voices, displayed with great charm to the top of the register, and with generous volume.”

A versatile concert performer, Mina has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cyprus Symphony, and other orchestras across Europe, Japan, and Mexico. Mentored by British dramatic soprano Susan Bullock, Mina has received the Stockholm Culture Award in recognition of her contributions to opera.

The PPO concert tickets are priced at ₱3,000, ₱2,500, ₱2,000, and ₱1,500 and can be purchased at TicketWorld, with discounts for Senior Citizens, PWD, Government & Military Personnel, and Athletes. SM Hotels Joins the Veritable List of Winners at the 2025 World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards

SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) was conferred the “2025 World’s Leading Sustainable Circular Economy” at the prestigious World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards in Dubai for its ‘Plate for the Planet’ program.

The said awards aim at recognizing, celebrating, and sharing game-changer stories of both individuals and organizations that make an indelible impact and contribution in sustainable travel and tourism. All submissions were meticulously screened by Sustainable Business students at Nova Business School and reviewed by the Advisory Board.

SM Hotels wins the “2025 World’s Leading Sustainable Circular Economy” at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards. Photo shows (from left) SMHCC Vice President for Quality and Sustainability Leah S. Magallanes and SMHCC Executive Vice President Peggy E. Angeles.

‘Plate for the Planet’ seeks to expand healthy and environment-friendly dining options, directed towards reducing dining wastes and mitigating GHG emissions in the food service industry. “Through the program, SMHCC endeavors to halve per capita global food waste at both the consumer and production levels, while greening supply chains and maintaining the food waste per cover, below industry levels as part of our decarbonization plans,” said SMHCC Vice President for Quality and Sustainability Ms. Leah Magallanes.

The program is part of SMHCC’s Sustainable Diner Program where every item on the menu is carefully curated, featuring locally sourced and hotel harvested ingredients. This initiative is a testament of SMHCC’s commitment to circular economy in its operations. Food waste is managed through traditional composting of layering with bacteria and the more modern way of using a bio digester. “Compost is then used as fertilizer in our gardens and partner farms, while the harvested herbs, vegetables, and fruits are used by our chefs to prepare a delicious dish – a ‘Plate for the Planet’. As such, we have partnered up with SM Foundation farmers through their Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program for our composting and gardening efforts,” adds Ms. Magallanes.

In particular, ‘Plate for the Planet’ advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) on Responsible Consumption and Production, reinforcing the company’s thrust on global sustainability standards. This strategic direction is systematically implemented across all SMHCC properties, integrating responsible practices into daily hotel operations. Dedicated Sustainability Champions at each property ensure these initiatives are actively upheld, measured, and continuously strengthened.

This global recognition affirms SMHCC’s leadership in driving circular innovation within the hospitality industry, proving that sustainability and exceptional guest experiences can go hand in hand. As the company continues to elevate its environmental commitment across all properties, it remains steadfast in shaping a future where every stay and every plate contribute to a more sustainable world

Dusit Thani Kyoto, a refined urban sanctuary that blends Thai-inspired gracious hospitality with Japan’s deep-rooted culture of omotenashi – the wholehearted art of looking after guests – has earned two Four-Star Ratings in the 2026 Forbes Travel Guide Star Awards, recognizing both the hotel experience and its integrated wellness offering in the same evaluation cycle.

The hotel received a Four-Star Rating for the second consecutive year, following its initial recognition in 2025, while its wellness experience, Devarana Wellness, earned a Four-Star Rating for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the hotel’s continued evolution and commitment to refined, experience-led luxury.

Dusit Thani Kyoto Devarana Spa.

Opened in September 2023 as Dusit’s first luxury hotel in Japan, Dusit Thani Kyoto offers guests a serene urban retreat shaped by thoughtful design and careful detailing, where calm confidence, cultural sensitivity, and personalized service are underpinned by an approach that places well-being and sustainability at the heart of the guest journey.

Alongside its integrated wellness offering, which blends traditional Thai therapies with Japanese healing rituals, the same philosophy extends to the hotel’s culinary experiences. Here, seasonality, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange shape dining journeys such as the omakase experience at Kōyō, inspired by Kyoto’s micro-seasons, and the hotel’s signature Thai restaurant Ayatana, which subtly reflects Dusit’s culinary heritage.

These experiences are supported by a strong focus on mindful sourcing, including fresh herbs and vegetables from a collaboration with Ohara Farm and organic tea leaves from the hotel’s own tea farm in Wazuka, both of which guests can visit as part of immersive experiences in nature.

The Forbes Travel Guide recognition builds on a growing body of international acclaim for Dusit Thani Kyoto, including Michelin Key distinctions in 2025 and 2026, as well as a ranking among Japan’s Best City Hotels at the Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2025, reinforcing the hotel’s standing within Japan’s luxury hospitality landscape.

Makoto Yamashita, Cluster General Manager, Dusit Thani Kyoto and ASAI Kyoto Shijo.

“This latest recognition reflects the steady progress our team has made in delivering service that feels thoughtful and personal across both the hotel stay and our integrated well-being experience,” said Makoto Yamashita, Cluster General Manager, Dusit Thani Kyoto and ASAI Kyoto Shijo. “For us, modern luxury is not about excess. In Japan, beyond Dusit Thani Kyoto, Dusit also operates ASAI Kyoto Shijo, a vibrant lifestyle hotel located in the city’s Shijo-Karasuma area, close to the historic Nishiki Market. Dusit’s presence in the country is set to expand further with the upcoming opening of WE Hotel Lake Toya – Dusit Collection, which will mark the group’s first property in Japan under the luxury Dusit Collection brand and offer a design-led retreat centered on nature, wellness, and understated luxury overlooking Lake Toya in Hokkaido.

Word of Mouth: Ige Ramos Launches new book, ‘Bukambibig’

Guillermo “Ige” Ramos, author, book designer, and advocate of Filipino food, recently launched Bukambibig (“Word of Mouth”) at the Ortigas Foundation Library. The book is a collection of 14 essays chronicling Ramos’ culinary discoveries through research, personal experiences, and cultural exploration.

Bukambibig is the second installment in his Lasa at Republika series, following Dila at Bandila. In the book and during the launch, Ramos challenges the idea of “authenticity” in Filipino cuisine, emphasizing that food traditions are constantly evolving.

“Eat Filipino food not for the history, because we’re not sure what is authentic. Eat Filipino food not for the culture, because we are not exotic enough. Eat Filipino food because everything you know about it is wrong,” – Ige Ramos

He encouraged audiences to rethink preconceived notions and to support local food and produce.

Mama Sita’s supports Ramos’ efforts to deepen appreciation for Filipino cuisine, in line with the mission of Teresita “Mama Sita” Reyes to preserve and promote the country’s culinary heritage through storytelling initiatives like Mga Kuwentong Pagkain.

Published by Anvil Publishing, Bukambibig is available in select branches of National Bookstore.

Asian Cultural Council Philippines announces benefit auction set at Leon Gallery

León Gallery once again opens another art-filled year with its traditional annual partnership with The Asian Cultural Council to commemorate and celebrate the visionary artistry of the Filipino.

ACC Philippines Chairman Ernest L. Escaler remarked that León Gallery and the Asian Cultural Council have, for the past eleven years, “have stood side by side in a shared vision—to champion the arts as a force that transcends borders, sparks dialogue, and shapes cultural leadership.”

“This year’s benefit art auction is held on Valentine’s Day as an ode to love in its most enduring form: love for the arts, love for generosity, and love for helping others realize their creative potential,” Escaler said.

Meanwhile, Leon Gallery Director Jaime Ponce de Leon shared, “The spirit of collaboration and partnership runs deep in this year’s edition of the Asian Cultural Council Auction. This year, we are celebrating 11 years of our fruitful partnership with a foundation that has always remained committed to championing the virtuoso of the Filipino artist by allowing him to spread his creative wings on foreign shores.”

“Our major highlights for this year’s ACC auction underscore the remarkable collaborations between our esteemed Filipino artists,” added Ponce de Leon.

Paglaom Padayon is a monumental mural-sized painting created by the Sanggawa group, an artists’ collective that was composed by former Salingpusa group members and now influential forces in the contemporary art scene: Elmer Borlongan, Mark Justiniani, Joy Mallari, Karen Flores, and Federico Sievert. The title is a Cebuano phrase that translates to “move forward with hope” and is a modern-day homage to Botong Francisco’s iconic 1964 mural Filipino Struggles Through History. Paglaom Padayon encapsulates the Filipino people’s collective power, fueled by a shared vision and hope for the nation’s advancement.

Another collaborative mural-sized painting is Mauro Malang Santos’ collaboration with his two beloved sons, Soler and Steve. Painted in 2000, the new millennium, the colossal work marked Malang’s 72nd birthday and his four-decades in the art scene.

Patricio Gaston O’Farrell, the favorite student of the great Juan Luna, graces this auction with a copy of his mentor’s now-lost 1887 masterpiece, titled Portrait of Christ, depicting the weary Jesus as he is presented to Pontius Pilate for his trial. Portrait of Christ serves as a surviving memento of Luna’s lost work, which he painted four months after his marriage to Paz Pardo de Tavera in order to prove his religious piety to her wife.

Another work by O’Farrell, Sumbungan, depicts the betrayal of the Katipunan by a katipunero, Teodoro Patiño, who divulged the existence of the revolutionary group to Fr. Mariano Gil, then the parish priest of Tondo. The painting is one of O’Farrell’s last works, painted a year before he died in 1942. Both Portrait of Christ and Sumbungan came from the collection of Gaston O’Farrell’s daughter, Edith.

Félix Resurrección Hidalgo’s Bois de Boulogne immortalizes the esteemed ilustrado’s favorite urban refuge during his 17-year Parisian period, one that captured and witnessed the melancholies of his heart and soul. On the other hand, Fernando Amorsolo’s Site of U.P. Diliman, painted in 1947, captures the then-countryside expanse of what would become the future location of the country’s prestigious national university. When Amorsolo painted this work, he was serving as the director of the UP School of Fine Arts. Another important Amorsolo painting is the 1933 work Marikina, acquired by Alex Frieder, who persuaded President Manuel Quezon to create a safe haven for Jews fleeing the Holocaust in Europe. The result was the establishment of the Jewish Refugee Committee of the Philippine Islands in the late 1930s, which was responsible for saving the lives of more than a thousand Jews from Germany and Austria.

Anita Magsaysay-Ho_Barrio Scene.

Anita Magsaysay-Ho and her quaint Barrio Scene is one of her first paintings as a newlywed woman, marrying the Chinese magnate Robert Ho, and thus, one of her first works signed with the iconic “Anita Magsaysay-Ho.” It was acquired by Paul H. Woods, once the president of the influential American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines and also a former president of the Philippine subsidiary of the International Harvesters Company, an American manufacturer of agricultural equipment, machinery, and tractors.

Also an important work is Danilo Dalena’s America, which is a surviving work for an intended series, the Port Authority Series that would have embodied his satirical impressions of the United States he visited and witnessed in the 80s. SM Hotels’ SMX Convention Center Hauls Multiple Awards at the ASEAN Tourism Forum

SM Hotels and Conventions Corp.’s (SMHCC) SMX Convention Center cements its position as a top-of-mind brand in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry after earning two major regional distinctions at the recently concluded ASEAN Tourism Forum in Cebu, recognizing excellence in venue management and service standards.

ASEANTA Excellence Awards: Best ASEAN Convention Centre Award 2026 awarded to SMX Convention Center. ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards: ASEAN MICE Venue – Exhibition Venue Category awarded to SMX Manila and SMX Clark.

SMX Convention Center was named Best ASEAN Convention Centre at the ASEANTA Excellence Awards 2026, one of the region’s most respected platforms celebrating outstanding tourism and events destinations. This milestone marks the first time SMX Convention Center has received this prestigious honor, reinforcing its role as a premier MICE venue that drives business events, attracts international delegates, and contributes significantly to the growth and sustainability of the country’s tourism ecosystem.

Mr. Walid Wafik, Senior Vice President – Operations of SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation receives the Best ASEAN Convention Centre Award 2026 on stage with the rest of the SMX team at the 35th ASEANTA Excellence Awards.

Further solidifying its leadership in the exhibition sector, SMX Convention Center Manila and SMX Convention Center Clark were both recognized at the ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards, winning the ASEAN MICE Venue in the Exhibition Venue Category. In 2024, SMX Convention Center Manila stood out as the sole property to receive recognition, marking a significant achievement for the convention center brand. Building on this momentum, the 2026 awards further reaffirm SMX’s growing leadership in the industry, with both SMX Convention Center Manila and SMX Convention Center Clark earning accolades—reflecting the continued expansion of hospitality distinction across SMX venues and highlighting their collective impact on the country’s MICE and tourism landscape.

“Being recognized by ASEAN bodies not only validates the hard work of our teams, but also strengthens the SMX brand as a preferred venue for regional and international events. With the opening of new SMX properties in 2026, we continue to expand our reach and offer world-class venues driving the continued development and global competitiveness of the country’s MICE sector.” said Mr. Walid Wafik, Senior Vice President – Operations of SM Hotels and Conventions Corp.

SMX Convention Center Manila and SMX Convention Center Clark were both recognized at the ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards, winning the ASEAN MICE Venue in the Exhibition Venue Category.

As SMX Convention Center expands its footprint with new branches set to open within the year in Cebu, Cabanatuan, Sta. Rosa (Laguna), Sto. Tomas (Batangas), and Pasay, this strategic growth supports SMX’s long-term vision of bringing MICE infrastructure to more destinations, while continuing to elevate industry standards across the Philippines and the ASEAN region. With multiple award-winning venues, an expanding portfolio, and a strong commitment to service excellence, SMX Convention Center remains at the forefront of the MICE industry—driving business tourism growth and positioning the Philippines as a premier events destination in Southeast Asia.
