Muhi: ’PUP as Southeast Asia’s Top Polytechnic University’

President Manuel M. Muhi, the 13th President of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), has affirmed his commitment to propel the University to excellence, aiming to establish the university as the top polytechnic institution in Southeast Asia.

In his address following his reappointment for a second term, President Muhi articulated his vision for PUP, pledging to fortify the university’s academic programs, modernize facilities, and cultivate a culture of excellence at par with global standards.

“Sa loob ng mga nakaraang taon, naging karangalan ko ang paglingkuran ang Sintang Paaralan, at ngayong pumapasok na tayo sa ikalawang termino, may kaakibat na bigat ‘pag sinasabi ‘yung pangalawang termino – nais kong ipahayag ang ating pangako na patuloy na magsisilbi at magtutulak ng mga reporma upang mapalakas pa ang ating pamantasan,” President Muhi stated.

During Muhi’s first term, PUP was able to secure its spot for the third time as Jobstreet’s most preferred graduates by employers. QS Stars, a globally-recognized rating system that provides rating to universities and institutions, hailed PUP as second best State University in the Philippines.

Muhi, who has been serving as PUP’s president since 2020, acknowledged the difficulties faced during his first term, particularly navigating the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Hindi ho naging madali ang ating unang termino na magkakasama. Bukod sa kinaharap natin ang COVID-19, ay kinailangan nating dumaan sa accreditation, application ng COPC, licensure examinations, CAEPUP, enrollment at iba pa, pero hindi nyo ho ako binigo,” he stated in his speech.

President Muhi outlined key priorities for his second term, focusing on enhancing academic programs, upgrading facilities, and promoting innovation and inclusivity.

“Magfofocus tayo sa mga student-centered programs – palalakasin natin ang enrollment-to-employment program na sisiguruhin na ang bawat estudyante ay magkakaroon ng industry-ready skills. Palalawakin natin ang access ng ating Education On Wheels program para mas maraming estudyante pa ang makapagtapos ng pag-aaral ng walang pinoproblemang babaunin sa araw-araw,” President Muhi stated.

President Muhi rallied the PUP community to join him in his vision for the university’s future, “Uunahan ko na ho kayo, hindi ho magiging madali ang ating ikalawang termino. Marami ho tayong kailangan gawin at gustong gawin para makapagbigay ng kalidad na edukasyon sa mas marami pang kabataang Pilipino. Sa tulong ng bawat isa, kayang-kaya nating marating ang mas mataas pang antas ng tagumpay. Patuloy nating isulong ang dangal ng Sintang Paaralan. Kasama ko ho ba kayo sa layuning ito?” he added, encouraging the PUP community to stand ready to face the challenges ahead and work towards providing quality education to more Filipino youth.

A simple celebration followed his address bringing together faculty members, administrators, students, and distinguished guests.

PUP makes it to the QS World University Rankings 2024

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) makes it to the top 16 universities in the Philippines according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings in Asia for 2024. This recognition reflects PUP’s commitment to providing quality and high-impact education at par with global standards.

University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi expresses his heartfelt appreciation to those who contributed to this remarkable achievement, “Nagpapasalamat ako sa mga tumulong at nagpursige para maabot natin ang karangalan na ito na makapasok sa QS World University Rankings in Asia for 2024. Bihira po ang makapasok dito sa prestigious (QS) World University Rankings. Asahan po ninyo na we will continue to work hard and adhere to international quality education standards para sa mga estudyante at sa bayan.”

This is the first time PUP entered the world rankings alongside the University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu, Far Eastern University (FEU), and Mindanao State University (MSU). Among the 16 universities included in the list, PUP is at top 7, securing a global rank within #551-600.

Early this year, PUP received a Three-Star rating from the QS Stars Rating System, recognizing its potential in achieving international education standards, conducting complex research activities, and implementing innovative pedagogical teaching. The University’s strengths and areas of expertise include excellent in employability and online learning; very good in teaching, academic development, and inclusiveness; and good in social responsibility. The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (BSND) program received a specialist criteria rating.

The QS World University Rankings feature 1,500 institutions across 104 countries. Its 20th edition implemented the largest methodological enhancement in introducing these three new metrics: sustainability, employment outcomes, and the International Research Network.

This recognition is beneficial to the institution because it can provide valuable information to students, increase visibility and reputation, and promote competition and innovation. The QSWorld University Rankings can help the university improve its performance and provide better service to students and communities.

Creating a positive learning environment

Teachers are often seen as a source of inspiration, courage, and hope when it comes to students’ education. But it is often forgotten that parents also play a critical role in the holistic development of a child’s schooling.

In the second part of the “Exploring Parental Engagement Practice in the School” session of the 4th Professional Development Series for Teachers on Parental Engagement, it discussed how both teachers and parents need to work hand-in-hand in identifying the areas for growth, as well as the strengths they need to reinforce in their students.

The webinar was presented by Globe, through its Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) program, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP).

Through the session, the different types of parents were discussed by the educators. If you are a parent, you may even see yourself in the list:

  • Kabute Parent – if you’re this kind of parent, you know that you are sometimes present or absent… just like mushrooms
  • Nega Star Parent – dubbed as “nega” for negative, this one always has alibis and thinks that things aren’t easy as they may seem
  • Bibong Parent – if we have the “nega star,” this one is the opposite. This type is always “positive” and always available
  • Business-minded Parent – it’s the one who always sees opportunities in things and circumstances
  • Lutang Parent – parenting is indeed not an easy task especially if you have a lot of things on your plate so it is understandable that there is this type who always says, “Ay ano nga po ‘yun, Ma’am?” or “Ay nand’yan po pala kayo, Ma’am, ano nga po ang sinasabi niyo?”

Parents experience numerous challenges when it comes to balancing their household priorities, jobs, and volunteering time for their children’s schooling.  A big factor is a time, which could often limit one’s attention and energy in being more involved in their child’s schooling.

That said, it becomes a concern for educators to face parents, most especially if they are experiencing concerns with household expenditures, are overprotective and controlling of their children, exposure to unsafe communities, and lack of awareness of current school systems.

Keeping these challenges in mind, participating teachers were taught how to address the barriers through the 3Cs: Communicate, Collaborate, Create and ENGAGE the parents: E-licit parent’s concerns, N-ever judge, G-ain their trust, A-ctive communication, G-rowth Mindset, and E-mpower.

“The collaboration we have with DepEd helps catalyze the learning community to imbibe technology and new methods of learning to keep abreast of the times,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

She added, “We are glad to share knowledge and widen the perspective of our educators through this program, as we help them establish a better working relationship with parents for their student’s well-being and learning — especially now, as we adjust to a blended learning environment.”

Being a strong advocate of 21st-century learning, Globe has lined up a modified training series under its Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) program that covers digital literacy, parental support on digital learning, responsible online behavior, effective 21st-century approaches to early language literacy, and psychological first aid.

Those interested can access the third and fourth session on Parental Engagement: Building a Strong Culture of Parent-School Partnership on DepEd NEAP’s official page.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 4, which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. Empowering the whole learning ecosystem with GoLearn

Globe is one in appreciating the work of educators and acknowledging the crucial role they play in developing globally-minded students and molding the nation’s future.

Spearheaded by Metrobank Foundation, Inc. and the Department of Education (DepEd), National Teachers’ Month (NTM) was celebrated from September 5 to October 5. With the unyielding support of Globe, NTM recognizes these modern-day classroom heroes and heroines across the country through the “My Teacher, My Hero” campaign.

Globe understands the challenges educators face during the pandemic and moved to help them by launching the GoLearn platform designed for everyone who aspires to enrich their education. GoLearn promotes continuous learning and bridges the digital gaps in the education landscape via access to connectivity, learning platforms, and solutions.

“It is our commitment in Globe to work with the whole education sector to bring forth everyone’s aspiration for better education, ensuring that learning never stops for all, wherever they are, regardless of their status. This is the heart of GoLearn—Globe’s unified initiative to bring together products, programs, services, and solutions that will empower the whole learning ecosystem,” said KD Dizon, Globe Head of Small, Medium Business Group.

GoLearn leverages support from different groups inside Globe, such as Globe Business, which provides students from low-income households with access to new normal education through the enhanced Phinma Education data plan.

Globe Business aids institutions with digital transformation to augment teachers’ teaching abilities and support the learning competencies of students. This is made possible through its E-Skwela Webinars and Online Training Program, which enlightens the education sector on digitalization’s benefits towards the continuous growth of quality education.

In connection with the month-long celebration, Globe also launched Forefront: The 2021 National Conference on Digital Learning. The event, aimed to reimagine education for a better tomorrow through transformative online pedagogies, featured tech leaders who gave their insights and knowledge on various topics and subjects to help educators and participants be informed with the latest on online learning. 20 papers, submitted by inspirational educators coming from all over the country, were likewise presented.

Globe is also leading efforts to create a safer online environment with programs that promote cybersecurity and safety, responsible digital citizenship, and mental wellness.

This includes the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP), which features modules that seek to raise students’ knowledge of digital citizenship and cybersafety by taking a critical look at their online behavior and helping them develop insights into the influences of the online world and their choices.

There are over 1.9 million students that were given access to the program across 17 regions. 115,000 teachers nationwide have gone through the modules and 4,000 schools have implemented the program.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has also incorporated the Digital Thumbprint Program into the K to 12 curriculum. By integrating Digital Citizenship and Responsibility, the DTP modules will be further developed for inclusion in the values formation subject. This way, all students nationwide will benefit from the lessons on digital citizenship and learn about the responsibilities that come with being online.

Globe has also been a long-time partner of DepEd on numerous education initiatives such as the Global Filipino Teachers (GFT), a modified series of teacher training.   Topics conveyed via GFT webinars include digital literacy, parental support on digital learning, responsible online behavior, effective 21st-century approaches to early language literacy, and mental wellness.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 4 for Quality Education. Globe is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs.

Developing Young Tech Talents is Crucial to Support the Growth of E-Commerce

E-commerce continues to play a significantly important role in the Philippine market and is estimated to be worth US$12 billion by 2025.[1] As more consumers turn to e-commerce, and as more businesses capitalize on the potential of the emerging digital economy, there is also a rising demand for qualified tech talents. According to Linkedin, tech roles make up the majority of “emerging jobs” in the region, with robotics engineer, cyber security specialist, and javascript developer roles making the job trend list.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, prepares and nurtures students and professionals for the digital landscape through its various talent development initiatives. One of these is the Shopee Apprentice Program which is an internship program designed to develop young tech talents into leaders through high-impact projects, specialized learning and development training, and mentorships led by Shopee leaders.

With a specialization in data science and analytics and equipped with advanced coding skills, she created end-to-end training portals during her stint with the Shopee Business Intelligence Team. “Even though the entire program was held virtually, Shopee translated their work culture online which is a great factor in my whole experience as an apprentice. I learned a lot from my mentors and also improved my skills in terms of presentation, time management, and communication. The program encouraged me to step up and be more confident to drive better results with what I do. I am glad a lot of people supported me throughout my whole Shopee journey,” Kyla shared.

Lance, another Shopee Apprentice Program participant, said that his experience was eye-opening, improved his problem-solving skills, and helped him understand the industry better. He worked with the People Team and displayed exemplary standing not only when it comes to his studies but also with his work at Shopee. “With Shopee, I learned how to look at a multifaceted problem, break it down into its constituent parts, and build it back together to form a comprehensive, results-driven strategy. With this mindset, I was able to drive concrete impact by implementing workable solutions that will help drive the business forward.”

After finishing the program, Kyla highly recommends other individuals check out the program for growth and new learnings. “For those who want a career in e-commerce and tech, the Shopee Apprentice Program can definitely equip you with the necessary skills through their mentorships, training, and projects. Healthy working relationships promote good work-life balance

Increased productivity while achieving common goals, trust and respect among co-workers, furthering one’s career with strong support in the workplace, development of long-lasting relationships, and, more importantly, a healthy work-life balance are positive results of having a good relationship with co-workers.

These were emphasized in the topic of the 10th edition of the Department of Education’s and Globe’s TAYO NAMAN! (Tulong, Alaga, Yakap at Oras para sa mga Tagapagtaguyod ng Edukasyon)14-part webinar series hosted by DepEd School Division of Cagayan.

Raymond A. Magpantay, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA), Inc. and ambassador to the Philippines for the non-profit No Bully based in San Francisco in the U.S., led the discussions about “Connecting and Building Healthy Relationships with Co-Workers.”

He shared with educators and parents who attended the webinar the different types of conflicts in the workplace, barriers in establishing good associations, how to manage conflicts, and techniques to establish and ensure healthy relationships.

“Filipinos value closeness and relationships with their family, friends, and co-workers. This is why we need to establish boundaries, assert ourselves and learn to self-regulate our emotions and reactions in different situations so we can really develop and sustain meaningful relationships at work and at home. Once we achieve this, we will be able to harness the power of learning from one another and the virtues of being humble and open,” Magpantay said.

Managing boundaries is the key to ensure that we do not leverage relationships unfairly or create an environment of favoritism. The seminar also emphasized the need to treat each team member with equal care, consideration, and respect. Whenever possible, it is important to include other people in work projects to further diversify our knowledge and perspectives. Importantly, we must be able to say NO even to our work friends to develop a culture of trust in respect.

“The pandemic has derailed many social activities and physical connection with friends, colleagues at work, and in some cases, even with family members. We are one with the DepEd and our teachers to help relearn, repair, and rebuild these relationships that are very important to our mental and emotional well-being. Through this initiative, we hope to reach more educators, parents, and students who feel burdened by isolation. Hindi po kayo nag-iisa. Sama-sama po tayo,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications and Chief Sustainability Officer.

DepEd’s TAYO Naman! is an online Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) program for all education advocates, including teachers, non-teaching personnel, and parents. It is spearheaded by DepEd’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Service (DRRMS) and Bureau of Human Resource and Organizational Development (BHROD) Employee Welfare Division in partnership with Globe’s Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) Series on Psychosocial Support Services, the Philippine Mental Health Association, Inc., MAGIS Creative Spaces, and Unilab Foundation.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 3 on providing good health and well-being and UN SDG No. 4 for quality education. Globe is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs.
