For these three women sellers, E-Commerce meant empowerment

More women in e-commerce continue to excel in the industry and are stepping out of their comfort zone to pursue their dreams and transform their lives. On March 8, the world will celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and this year’s campaign theme, #BreakTheBias, promotes gender equality and a community that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusivity.

In celebration of IWD, three local female Shopee sellers share how they overcame the challenges they faced and how they’re breaking barriers. They hope that their stories may serve as an inspiration to other aspiring women entrepreneurs venturing into the world of e-commerce.

Embracing the Shift to Online Selling

Setting up an online business requires a lot of focus and can be intimidating. Shine de Luna was pregnant when she started selling online, and eventually decided to focus on her online business when she gave birth so that she can spend more time taking care of her child. She knew it was risky and faced many difficulties when she first set up her online shop.

The same goes for Anjelica Tullao, who started with zero ratings and zero items sold. “Establishing the customer’s trust was my main obstacle. For them to consider buying from my shop, they need to trust me and that my products are of high quality,” she said.

Emerald Sin, on the other hand, was already selling her pre-loved clothes in college to finance her studies. She invested in a brick-and-mortar store located around the University Belt and shifted online to cater to her clients who were going home to their provinces.

Rising Above the Challenges One Step at a Time

Despite the hardships faced, Shine, Emerald, and Anjelica rose above the challenges, determined to succeed no matter what. For Shine, not only was she able to provide for her family, but she also became a channel of blessing to the few workers she employed to get her business running. “I am grateful to my team for helping me through it all. It was risky, but it was worth it because I can also help others during this difficult time.” It was also through online selling that she was able to help achieve her parent’s lifetime dream of owning their own house.

Both Emerald and Anjelica focused on how to market their products effectively. Emerald branched out and became a direct manufacturer, hiring local seamstresses to produce high-quality fashion products, while Anjelica maximized the in-app features of Shopee to improve customer trust and retention.

Supporting Women in E-commerce

This International Women’s Day, Shine, Emerald, and Anjelica encourage other women to step up, break stereotypes, and reach for their dreams. “I’m encouraging those who are hesitant, to take a leap of faith. I believe that we can do so much more. Don’t let the circumstances stop you from being successful and from helping others. A successful journey always starts with someone determined to overcome anything life throws at us,” said Emerald.

Shine, on the other hand, is proud to be both a mother and a successful entrepreneur. “I’m very happy because I was able to fulfill my parent’s dream of having our own house, and this was made possible by being an online seller.” She also adds that women should pursue their dreams and work hard towards it. “Don’t just expect things from your partner or parents. I feel fulfilled as a mother and daughter since I can provide my family what they need thanks to my online business.”

Anjelica also pushes aspiring female entrepreneurs to grab the opportunity. “Find your own purpose, challenge yourself, and pursue your goals. Being a successful woman in business means being your authentic self and showing up, day after day, to get to work your dreams.”

Smart Hacks To Help You Manage Your Money

With all the household responsibilities, daily expenses, and, of course, shopping budols, saving money can be a challenging task — but it doesn’t have to be.  If you incorporate these simple and easy tips into your lifestyle,  you’ll see that small adjustment will add up and make a big impact on your finances.

Here are some practical hacks to help you get started:

Know your spending habits and choose the right platform for your needs.

For starters, understand your transactions and list down the things you usually spend money on such as groceries, utilities, and payments. Once you have those laid out, choose a financial platform that can complement your spending habits.

More Filipinos are finding ways to go digital with their errands these days, and e-wallets have been very useful when it comes to both online and offline transactions. When choosing an e-wallet, use one that affords you many benefits. ShopeePay, Shopee’s all-in-one e-wallet, has got you covered in terms of features and perks with no additional transaction charges.   With ShopeePay, users can conveniently send money, buy load, pay bills, and scan to pay at stores nationwide. Activate and verify your ShopeePay account now to experience its countless features and services.

No transfer fees, more savings

Online transfers are quick and easy and have become the norm, but some platforms charge fees that add to your expenses. Avoid paying transfer fees when you send money and make the most out of ShopeePay’s free and real-time transfers for a hassle-free experience. This feature allows you to withdraw funds from your ShopeePay wallet to your bank account, or send money to your friends and family’s ShopeePay wallet or bank account. When sending money to any Shopee user, you can even personalize your transfers with themed virtual cards, fit for any occasion. “Here’s a gift for my favorite person” and “Dropping by to say I appreciate you!” are just some of the virtual cards you can use to make your transfers extra special! Whichever way you use this feature, transfers made with ShopeePay are free, instant, and available 24/7.

Transfer fees eat up a portion of your expenses which can be savings or used for necessities. When on a budget, it’s important to see what expenses are avoidable to help you save more. With ShopeePay, there’s no need to worry about any added fees when you need to transfer money. Plus, no need to stand in line at the bank for your cash transfers, so you get to save both time and money!

Take advantage of discounts and cashback promos when paying utilities.

Every month, we have expenses for water, electricity, load, internet, and more that we need to pay regularly. With these bills going up to thousands of pesos, it’s best to take advantage of whatever promos we can to lessen our expenses.

When you pay your bills online with ShopeePay, you can get up to 10% off on load across all networks and up to 25% cashback on your monthly bills from over 60 billers from partners such as Meralco, Maynilad, PLDT, Globe, Smart, Converge, and more.

Go cashless when going out to stick to your budget and score deals.

Another great tip for sticking to your budget is to only cash in your e-wallet with the amount you’ve set aside for expenses. Especially when going out to run errands, this lets you stay focused only on the things you need to purchase or pay for. To help you with this, ShopeePay offers free cash-ins via InstaPay, where you can get up to ₱25 cashback on your InstaPay fee.

When shopping for essentials or favorite finds, make sure to check out discounted deals exclusively for ShopeePay. Browse the Shopee app daily to avail of ₱1 Deals on essentials and food via ShopeePay Near Me, and redeem your vouchers when you scan-to-pay with ShopeePay at partner merchants nationwide.

Strong Support Ecosystem for MSMEs Online Business

As society becomes more digitalized, e-commerce plays a significant role in helping groom and grow entrepreneurs who can meet the needs of consumers. More people in the region are coming online, and this number is expected to reach around 380 million by 2026[1]. In order to help brands and MSMEs establish and strengthen their online presence, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, focuses on developing a strong support ecosystem that makes it simple for them to launch and grow their online business.

This includes enhanced marketing tools, knowledge sharing, and upskilling, as well as sustained guidance from Shopee, to help business owners tap into various markets, increase their monthly average sales, and achieve notable e-commerce growth as a whole.

Shopee Seller Education

Shopee provides the necessary support and seminars to equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the e-commerce knowledge they need to succeed. Just this year, Shopee launched its first Shopee University Summit where industry leaders, successful online sellers, and top brands shared their expertise to help sellers understand the basics of e-commerce and how they can maximize the potential of e-commerce and succeed in growing their business online. The second summit also proved to be a success with 35,000 online viewers. During the summit, participants learned about developing the correct business branding, product photography skills, and leveraging Shopee tools and social media platforms to promote their businesses.

Shopee sellers can also access Shopee’s Seller Education Hub (https://seller.shopee.ph/edu/home) where they can take helpful e-commerce courses, participate in informative webinars, and read articles about shop management, product listings, operation improvements, and other business matters.

All-Around Support from Relationship Managers

In addition to marketing tools readily available for use within the app, Shopee also provides MSMEs with constant guidance on how they can improve and grow their business through highly-trained relationship managers (RMs). To fully support a seller’s growth, RMs push for excellent service and tend to the seller’s inquiries, and sometimes going out of their way to cater to the seller’s e-commerce needs.

Kriszel of M A R E Clothing said that their relationship manager helped them greatly, even encouraging them to join big campaigns to grow their business more. “Our relationship manager was very helpful all throughout our Shopee journey. During big campaigns, we were given ample exposure to in-app features like Shopee Feed. Last 10.10, we earned more than 2,000 followers thanks to Shopee’s feature Feed Freebies. We are very grateful for the guidance we received and it is a big factor in our shop’s success.”

Campaigns that Meet Consumer Demand

In addition, Shopee also supports its sellers through big campaigns as local MSMEs stand to benefit from the increased traffic to supercharge their business growth and scale their online presence. Throughout the region, sellers who participated at the recent 9.9 Super Shopping Day recorded 8X more orders compared to an average day, and this coming  11.11 – 12.12 Big Christmas Sale, Shopee continues to provide sellers with marketing tools to further drive sales. The 11.11 – 12.12 Big Christmas Sale is happening until December 12, 2021, and serves as an opportunity for sellers to provide consumers with promos that include ₱1 deals, free shipping with no minimum spend, and 10% off daily vouchers.

Digital Payment Options with ShopeePay

As digital payments become more integrated into the daily lives of consumers, ShopeePay serves as a multi-functional tool for all their payment needs while providing rewards and safe transactions. Through Shopee’s year-end campaigns like the 11.11-12.12 Big Christmas Sale, ShopeePay will continue to drive greater adoption of digital payments amongst shoppers and merchants, bringing ShopeePay users greater convenience and value while helping businesses access more opportunities in the digital economy.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “To grow in e-commerce, brands and businesses need to be committed to their journey and here at Shopee, we ensure that we are here to guide and support them all throughout. This is why we designed our ecosystem to be end to end: onboarding, training, and scaling their business to meet the demands of their customers. The needs of our stakeholders are ever-changing, and this is why we need to keep evolving.”

Developing Young Tech Talents is Crucial to Support the Growth of E-Commerce

E-commerce continues to play a significantly important role in the Philippine market and is estimated to be worth US$12 billion by 2025.[1] As more consumers turn to e-commerce, and as more businesses capitalize on the potential of the emerging digital economy, there is also a rising demand for qualified tech talents. According to Linkedin, tech roles make up the majority of “emerging jobs” in the region, with robotics engineer, cyber security specialist, and javascript developer roles making the job trend list.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, prepares and nurtures students and professionals for the digital landscape through its various talent development initiatives. One of these is the Shopee Apprentice Program which is an internship program designed to develop young tech talents into leaders through high-impact projects, specialized learning and development training, and mentorships led by Shopee leaders.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “As the demand for tech roles rises, Shopee will continue to train and equip the next generation of leaders through initiatives like the Shopee Apprentice Program. We will ramp up our efforts to provide proper mentorship and a well-rounded work experience for individuals joining our internship program.”

These Participants of the Shopee Apprentice Program highlight how they gained significant professional and personal growth to jumpstart their careers in e-commerce.

For Kyla, the Shopee Apprentice Program was an enriching experience. With a specialization in data science and analytics and equipped with advanced coding skills, she created end-to-end training portals during her stint with the Shopee Business Intelligence Team. “Even though the entire program was held virtually, Shopee translated their work culture online which is a great factor in my whole experience as an apprentice. I learned a lot from my mentors and also improved my skills in terms of presentation, time management, and communication. The program encouraged me to step up and be more confident to drive better results with what I do. I am glad a lot of people supported me throughout my whole Shopee journey,” Kyla shared.

Lance, another Shopee Apprentice Program participant, said that his experience was eye-opening, improved his problem-solving skills, and helped him understand the industry better. He worked with the People Team and displayed exemplary standing not only when it comes to his studies but also with his work at Shopee. “With Shopee, I learned how to look at a multifaceted problem, break it down into its constituent parts, and build it back together to form a comprehensive, results-driven strategy. With this mindset, I was able to drive concrete impact by implementing workable solutions that will help drive the business forward.”

After finishing the program, Kyla highly recommends other individuals check out the program for growth and new learnings. “For those who want a career in e-commerce and tech, the Shopee Apprentice Program can definitely equip you with the necessary skills through their mentorships, training, and projects. You can definitely drive your own growth as well as bring value and positive impact to Shopee through this internship. If you are up for a challenge to do meaningful work, the Shopee Apprentice Program might just be for you,” Kyla shared.
