Nikulas Lebajo’s ‘Milieu’

For his 21st solo exhibition, the artist takes us through his body of works to the vast and verdant milieu of natural beauty.

Nothing compares to nature’s splendid beauty, as these new works of Nikulas Lebajo about scenery depicts. The blooms and exquisite array of colors evoke a hopeful tomorrow after being totally cooped up during COVID-19 quarantine at home for many months now. As you reflect on things in the midst of uncertainties, you might be starting to forget what being in nature even feels like.

Through his paintings, we are journeying to the great outdoors, in the heart of a vast and verdant milieu of natural beauty. All masterpieces are meticulously rendered with dexterous fashion, well-thought-off color combinations, and a definite rendering of brush strokes for a fluid finish.

Some refreshing elements used by the artist for his new creations are the inclusion of oriental translucent floral and geometric patterns, a herd of bright-hued butterflies almost in unison of being released to the outside world – reflective of the isolation we all experience as we continue to combat the spread of the COVID-19. Our mobility has been restrained since the pandemic hit us. We could no longer spend more time outside in natural settings. His inspiration emanates from the surroundings he sees mostly in Tagaytay, Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas.

Nature has its own way of healing us. By merely looking at the artist’s body of works, we feel that we are experiencing an extraordinary form of healing.

“Milieu” is Lebajo’s 21st one-man show in a career spanning 32 years and counting. His new creations totally depart from his traditional built-in and repetitive figures that he has been known for. Nature as a subject matter is closer to his heart as he is a staunch environmentalist and supports the preservation of our natural environment.
